Kansas Dems reportedly trying to recruit … Kathleen Sebelius for Senate

posted at 11:21 am on April 16, 2014 by Allahpundit

Really? With every Republican in the country set to run ObamaCare attack ads this fall, the Democratic Party’s going to double down in a perennially red state on the captain of the Healthcare.gov Titanic?

There’s got to be a hidden motive in pushing a story this bananas to the media. But what?

In her darkest hour last fall, Kathleen Sebelius suffered one of the deepest cuts from an old family friend who accused her of “gross incompetence” over the rollout of the Affordable Care Act and demanded that she resign as secretary of health and human services. Now she is weighing revenge.

Ms. Sebelius is considering entreaties from Democrats who want her to run against that old friend, Senator Pat Roberts, Republican of Kansas.

Several Democrats said this week that Ms. Sebelius had been mentioned with growing frequency as someone who could wage a serious challenge to Mr. Roberts, 77, who is running for a fourth term and is considered vulnerable. One person who spoke directly to Ms. Sebelius said that she was thinking about it, but added that it was too soon to say how seriously she was taking the idea…

But friends and Democrats who know her said that they seriously doubted she would follow through and mount a campaign, considering how personally difficult the past six or seven months had been.

Theory one: The left’s triumphalism about hitting seven million sign-ups, replete with treating Sebelius’s resignation as a measure of victory, has now logically metamorphosed into the insane belief that her ObamaCare record makes her a strong candidate, even in a state that hasn’t sent a Democrat to the Senate in 75 years. This is where reading Vox gets you, I guess.

Theory two: Sebelius’s friends feel sorry for her now that she’s politically toxic and planted this with the Times to boost her spirits. Her political career’s over and it hurts to admit that, so here’s a way of not admitting it just yet.

Theory three: She’s bitter about having been scapegoated for the O-Care rollout, especially in light of resignation postmortems claiming that Team Obama lost confidence in her months ago. Running for Senate is “revenge,” in other words — on the White House and Democrats, who were eager to shed her as dead weight.

Theory four: The Democratic bench in Kansas really is this thin. This is a state, remember, where Dems control slightly more than a quarter of the state House and just one-fifth of the state Senate. For all her flaws, Sebelius has unusually high name recognition there, partly because of her HHS platform and partly because of her years as governor. Meanwhile, on the right, Pat Roberts’s job approval is underwater and he and Milton Wolf are busy kneecapping each other in a bitter primary. Between GOP infighting and the fact that, at least nationally, more voters prefer the Democratic plan for health care than the Republican one, maybe Democrats figure that it’s worth rolling the dice on a big name, whatever her liabilities. If not for the O-Care debacle, she’d be a no-brainer as a Democratic recruit in Kansas; maybe, they think, the hometown crowd will have some sympathy for her and decide that it’s worth giving someone else a shot after more than 30 years of Roberts in Congress.

That’s the best I can do to rationalize this and I’m not remotely convinced. One more theory for the road. Sebelius as sacrificial lamb (again)?

They may be banking on the usual “spite vote for a Dem” from Kansas RINO’s that has elected the handful of Dems who’ve gotten state office there (including Cruella herself when she won the Gov. chair).

Maybe the simple answer is they really believe their own propaganda. They think she’s wonderful and did a terrific job with this successful program called Obamacare. Better than expected!

Oh how sad! The partisan whore has had a rough few months. You know who else has had a rough few months? Anybody attempting to sign up for Obamacare amid all the lies that this woman has spouted to Congress, the media, and the American public!

Had the Titanic successfully crossed the Atlantic, the name of its captain, Edward Smith, would have scarcely been noted. Had Obamacare’s launch been successful, this nasty human being would have retired into obscurity. As it is, there isn’t enough soap in the world to remove the stench on this woman’s reputation.

Sebelius comes to Kansas riding a tornado. Throw water at her and she’ll dissolve.

oscarwilde on April 16, 2014 at 11:50 AM

Theory #4.

Kansas Dems are completely and totally insane. Racist lying bigots who only play in the union hotbed of Wichita (and are losing there since their stupidity drove away thousands of union jobs), the south of Topeka, (a toxic combination of teat-sucking welfare cases and state government workers), Douglas County (Lawrence and KU, dumb college students and dumber professors who call for the murder of gun owners), and Johnson and Wyandotte Counties (Kansas City, KS welfare addicts and guilty white liberals who fled the messes they made elsewhere in the country).

Sebelius’s whole political career is an example of why you should never trust RINOs and “moderate” Republicans. She never would have been governor except for an entire wing of the Kansas Republican Party with McLameitis that thought they would stick it to the social conservatives and side with the moonbats.

northdallasthirty on April 16, 2014 at 11:50 AM

The Dems can’t be this stupid. Delusional, yes. But not stupid(that’s the GOP’s thing). Running Sebelius for the Senate would force the Dems to talk about the one thing they don’t wanna discuss til November. And it would also allow Roberts or Wolf to demand answers from her on the real number of enrollees in Obamacare since she can’t campaign for months on a platform of “I don’t know, but trust me”.

The people of Kansas can’t be that bright as they elected Cruella as governor twice. 1970s Ohioans were far smarter. They jettisoned her old man, who also was far-left, after a single term.

Obama, Relosi, Reid, Sebelius, are America’s reward for murdering 50 million innocent babies. yea, it’s going to get a lot worse before it get’s better. And it isn’t going to get better as long as we continue to murder innocent babies.

Oh! I’m sure she’ll pull a Biden and dismiss all that burden and loss of freedom as “worth it” since Obamacare is such a smashing success.

Happy Nomad on April 16, 2014 at 12:24 PM

Too many people have been hurt by Obamacare. This isn’t theory anymore, too many people now have lost the insurance policies they liked, they are paying higher premiums, higher deductibles, higher co-pays, and are losing the doctors and hospitals they were told by Obama they could keep. Do you honestly think people are going to forget that after they’ve been hit this hard? They could run a John Kennedy and he would still lose in Kansas in 2014.

Libertyship46 on April 16, 2014 at 12:44 PM

Ding ding ding. No Democrat in Kansas has any chance at all, might as well throw out a big name that might bait the GOP into burning a few resources in that state.

As insurance commissioner and Governor of Kansas she was a fake pro-lifer … a pro-liar if you will. As stupid as her candidacy would be anyway, add in the outrage Kansans must feel about her lies and radical pro-abortion conversion.

Not a chance in hell.

There is a concerted effort to kick the Tea Party folks out of Topeka. The RINOs are joining the Dems to run against them.

Milton Wolf should capitalize on this. Pat Roberts was a personal friend to ol’ Kathy and only said she should resign after Wolf declared for Senate.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I live in Kansas, and I can guarantee that the right and the left will join hands and belt out, “We are the World” before that old seahag see’s public office here again. I shudder at the thought.

GarandFan on April 16, 2014 at 2:23 PM

As someone familiar with Kansas, I’d be surprised if she’d run.

This struck me as a ‘Look! Squirrel” distraction.

Senator Roberts is not without serious flaws, but Sibelius is so tainted by Tiller the Killer and the ACA debacle. Just don’t se it.

Rosey on April 16, 2014 at 2:27 PM

Please…. Let her run…. I’d be more than happy to give her a false sense of importance by encouraging her to run. The campaign ads write themselves.

2nd Ammendment Mother on April 16, 2014 at 2:55 PM

Yeah, just what America needs — another proven ultra-conserative, corrupt, incompetent, liberal F*@%-up in our Federal Government!

Democrats became a self-appointed oligarchy that rammed the ACA ‘EDICT’ down the throats of the majority of Americans that opposed it…illegally sued the DOJ to spy on the AP, to illegally spied on all Americans, used the IRS to target Obama’s personal political threats/enemies – now we are finding out that the IRS not only sought to deny them tax exempt status but now know they coordinated with the DOJ to vindictively furthwer punish them by looking into how they could JAIL them ‘for even daring to ask for tax exempt status to defy ‘the Great One”! And the LAST thing we need is the ‘Queen’ of the ACA P0S web site FUBAR Obama effort ‘elected’ and in Washington!

easyt65 on April 16, 2014 at 3:33 PM

Before she runs, or right after she announces her intent to run, charge her with 1) illegally influencing companies under her direction to donate money to use for Obamacare, & 2) Using non-tax-collected income to pay for a government program. According to the Constitution/Law, only U.S. Tax revenue can be used to fun a government program! Put her arse in JAIL!
