Yes, Democrat, there are happy transracial adoptive families in Alabama

posted at 9:21 pm on April 14, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Mixed-race adoptive families were the subject of public mocking at the hands of a Democratic lawmaker in Alabama last month. In an episode reminiscent of MSNBC’s infamous guffaw over the Romneys’ adopted, black grandson state Rep. Alvin Holmes questioned the existence of such families during a discussion of abortion policy.

State representative Alvin Holmes (D) Montgomery, said Republican lawmakers would support abortion if their daughters became pregnant by black men. Holmes later said he would offer $100,000 cash to anyone who could show “a whole bunch of whites” have adopted black children in Alabama.

Even Jezebel grudgingly allows this might not be the best tack for abortion rights activists to take.

One group, Faces of Families of Alabama, took Holmes’ challenge and tried to introduce him to some of the children he thinks his fellow citizens are too hateful to love. The Owings family echoed some of the issues for which MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry emotionally apologized after she and her guests joked about Kieran Romney:

Today at the state house, white parents who adopted mixed race or minority children said it’s time for Holmes to ‘pay up.’

Beverly Owings is an adoptive mother of a 13-year-old bi-racial daughter. “I would like for him to ‘man up.’ He’s made the statement. He needs to put his money where is mouth is.”…

Owing’s husband Jeromy, says his family has worked hard to break down racial barriers.

“After we work on it and work on it to have an elected official that can come in and make those comments and tear down everything that we’ve worked hard for. It puts a question in their minds of ‘Do I belong?’ ‘Where do I belong?”

The right thing for Holmes to do would be to apologize and pony up the $100,000 (or at least a portion of it) for a reputable adoption agency or charity serving adoptive families. The Blaze reported Holmes was invited to the rally but didn’t attend. But that’s not what Holmes did. Because he’s an upstanding liberal committed to tolerance and racial healing, he did this:

Alvin Holmes is sticking by some controversial comments he made during the legislative session.

“The majority of white people in the state of Alabama are against adopting black children and the majority of white people in the state of Alabama are against their daughters having babies by black men and I stand by that comment,” he says…

“The majority of white people in my opinion in the state of Alabama do not want their daughters having black babies,” he says. “They know it’s true. I know it’s true. And they’re not going to say, yes Alvin Holmes is right.”…

“I know it’s embarrassing to them,” he says. “When they go out and say, well it doesn’t matter to me and then most of them catch they daughter having a black baby, they’d have a conniption fit.”

Click here if you’d like to watch Holmes (D-amnhe’srude) stick to his insensitive guns:

Holmes grew up in a different Alabama than today’s. That’s bound to affect his perception of the state, understandably. But there’s no excuse for remaining willfully blind to the many good people who are, in one of the most intimate ways possible, building bridges between races. How is a group of happy families of different races on the steps of the Alabama state house a reason for repeated ridicule, not celebration? And, why do these families, which represent some of the best about our country, repeatedly become the collateral damage of liberals who attacking conservatives? It’s a nasty impulse they should examine before lecturing the rest of us about race.

Apparently Holmes is determined to remain an embarrassment to this state no matter what.

I read that the day it happened and it honestly choked me up anyone could say something like that.
one issue foster parents/potential adopters deal with is state services pushing for race based adoption, IOW black person to black family, etc.
the actual welfare of the kid seems to pale (per those idiots) in comparison to playing damned race games.
enough to make you cry :(

Liberals are obsessed with race. Conservatives don’t pay much attention to it.

crankyoldlady on April 14, 2014 at 9:35 PM

So is he saying there are alot of blacks that want white babies? pretty sure there isn’t because at the end of the day you want kids that look like you do. Doesn’t mean that if waiting for 5 years for a white kid and maybe 1 year for a black kid a white parent won’t take the black child. Just means most parents regardless of color want kids that look like them.

Yeah. Too bad that’s a true statement. Why else would one become a member of the party of subjugation and death? Even poor Brat Stupak was an evil piece of sh!t. He simply rolled the dice and lost. In fact, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that he’s making considerably more money now.

That braying jackass is a disgusting embarrassment to the state of Alabama. We don’t need him or his ilk. He’s a loudmouth joke.

Alabama State Rep. Alvin Holmes, D-Montgomery, has been in the news a lot lately for his bigoted comments on everything from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to interracial adoption, but nothing can compare to what Holmes said on the radio last week when presented with the opportunity to clarify his position on marriage.

“Now, I’m for interracial marriage,” Holmes said after a long diatribe claiming most white Alabamians are not. “I’m for same-sex marriage. I’m the one that introduced the bill to have same-sex marriage. I don’t care who marry who. If a man meet a little mule and he wanna get married to the little mule, as long as he and the little mule get along all right, that’s fine with me. It doesn’t bother me any kind of way.”

Jomama on April 14, 2014 at 9:51 PM

dkmonroe on April 14, 2014 at 9:48 PM

Yep, but he keeps getting reelected. Two reasons–his district is full of LIV’s, and he’s like the village idiot–people kinda feel sorry for him, and figure keeping him where he is is the best way to know where he is and what he’s doing.

Oh, and we call ourselves Alabamians. With the -ians ending. Just ’cause.

And say, Mr. Holmes, how many kids of any tint have YOU adopted?

Doc Holliday on April 14, 2014 at 9:58 PM

The cutest little girl that my girlfriend nannied a few years back, is a black girl who was adopted by a wonderful gay-male couple in Chicago, now living in Kansas. We still keep in touch.

Wonder what this jack-butt in Ala. would have to say about them, and would he say it to my face?

jjones on April 14, 2014 at 10:13 PM

Leave it to a liberal to manufacture a racial tie-in to a debate on life.

Is Mr. Holmes claiming that
a) Black children are not as adoptable as white children, and
b) As a consequence of this, they therefore deserve death?

Wow. Now we know where all the Southern racists went in the Democratic Party — they’re still there, but under deep cover. But every once in a while, one has to surface to take a breath.

God Bless the ladies who decided to let their children live and enrich the lives of their families and show the world how a big fool was actually elected by others.

Cindy Munford on April 14, 2014 at 10:33 PM

That’s one.

Ironic considering the high rate of abortions among blacks.

CW on April 14, 2014 at 10:55 PM

This dude needs to STFU and write a check. I see bi-racial children all over the place in my Alabama city.

A couple at my church, with red hair, pale white skin and freckles adopted a gorgeous black baby girl.

Another white couple at my church fostered a black baby from birth. The baby was adopted by a family member in another state and the foster mom, at her own expense, traveled with the baby to his new adoptive home and stayed for a week to help get him settled in. They are still in touch with the adoptive family as “auntie/uncle” therefore being part of a black family.

I fostered a black child and was treated with respect and kindness by his family while he was in my temporary care.

It has nothing to do with race…it has everything to do with love.

kringeesmom on April 14, 2014 at 10:55 PM

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2014/01/31/msnbc-flap-new-evidence-on-the-political-views-of-mixed-race-adopted-and-step-families/

Not surprisingly, there is no statistically significant left-right political differences in the proportion of adopted or step-families that are in mixed race households. Indeed, among families with step-children or adopted children, 11 percent of conservatives were living in mixed race households compared to 10 percent of liberals living in mixed-race households.

Democrats think that a 1% advantage is only significant under certain conditions. I’m sure that 1% would be quite significant if the roles were reversed.

Says quite a bit about suppositions.

lineholder on April 15, 2014 at 12:25 AM

I’m sure all Democrats across the country are denouncing this guy, asking for an apology or resignation, and MSNBC is hour long round tables on the idiocy of these statements, right? I mean, a Republican’s comment about the possibility of pregnancy under stress during a rape received that much scrutiny not long ago even though it didn’t deny rape or condoned it or treat it as as a myth.

In these video clips, why do the newscasters not have Southern accents? All the Alabamians do. Now there’s a mystery, huh? Doesn’t it bother the locals that the newscasters don’t sound like them? And what’s wrong with the newscasters having a southern accent? Do they beat it out of them in broadcast journalism school, or what?

And oh yeah, Alvin Holmes is an idiot. I would say a functional idiot, but I’m pretty sure he’s not functional. Ever heard him pontificate on the beers available in Alabama? “It drank pretty good, don’t it?”

In most broadcast work, ANY accent is “beaten” out of you. The more geographically neutral you sound, the better. I once considered getting into voice-over work and talked it over with a colleague of mine who’s made buckets of money talking for a living. His first piece of advice: hire a voice coach to get rid of your accent.

I was like: “What accent??”

If you think, for one moment, that a parent adopts a particular child because it is more convenient, you are very wrong. Do you really think that someone ‘settles’ when doing an adoption? Do you not realize that this is a life time commitment? You are joining your life with the life of that child. And in the first years, it is a whole life commitment. You don’t do this unless you know in your heart that you will love that child just as much as any children you have that share your DNA.

What is Holmes’ reaction to the fact that adoption agencies were (and are) frequently not allowing cross-race adoptions?

ss396 on April 15, 2014 at 12:22 PM

A racist pr*ck like Alvin Holmes should NOT get a free pass simply because he has some black ancestry. Society, on the whole, should treat him precisely the same way that they treat northern Idaho skinheads, KKK members, and Nazis. He should be ostracized, shunned, and more than anything, ignored. NO ONE should enable him by giving him a forum or an opportunity to spread his vile hatred. This is a Biblical principle that goes back more than 20 centuries to the Levitical law that was handed down to Moses. People that continue to say and do things that bring God’s wrath down on the people (and believe me, there are PLENTY of Democratic policies that are going to do exactly that) and people who refuse to repent must be cut-off from society. Traditional Christian church discipline, as outlined by the Apostle Paul in his letters, reaffirms this policy. Perpetual offenders, like Alvin Holmes, should be vomited out of our society. The last place he should be is in the Alabama statehouse. Trust me, the voters of Alabama do NOT want to be standing in close proximity to this man when God’s judgment finally falls.

CyberCipher on April 15, 2014 at 12:33 PM

Naturally Rep. Holmes would make hateful statements like that. To say otherwise is to admit that maybe black people aren’t victims anymore, and if that’s so, where would race-baiting politicians like Rep. Holmes be?
