Brandeis withdraws honorary degree offer to Ayaan Hirsi Ali

posted at 10:01 am on April 9, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Brandeis University originally invited Ayaan Hirsi Ali to receive an honorary degree at its spring commencement, and created a storm of controversy on its campus. It has now withdrawn that offer, and may have created a storm of controversy outside of its campus as well. The former Dutch parliamentarian has long spoken out against the excesses of Islam, from her own painful personal experience to the radicalism that fuels terrorism and war. Apparently, Brandeis just figured this out, which raises a number of questions:

The university said in a statement posted online that the decision had been made after a discussion between Ali and university President Frederick Lawrence.

“She is a compelling public figure and advocate for women’s rights, and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls throughout the world,” said the university’s statement. “That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.”

Ali, a member of the Dutch Parliament from 2003 to 2006, has been quoted as making comments critical of Islam. That includes a 2007 interview with Reason Magazine in which she said of the religion, “Once it’s defeated, it can mutate into something peaceful. It’s very difficult to even talk about peace now. They’re not interested in peace. I think that we are at war with Islam. And there’s no middle ground in wars.”

Ali was raised in a strict Muslim family, but after surviving a civil war, genital mutilation, beatings and an arranged marriage, she renounced the faith in her 30s. She has not commented publicly on the issue of the honorary degree.

In 2007, Ali helped establish the AHA Foundation, which works to protect and defend the rights of women in the West from oppression justified by religion and culture, according to its website. The foundation also strives to protect basic rights and freedoms of women and girls. This includes control of their own bodies, access to an education and the ability to work outside the home and control their own income, the website says.

So, first question: What did Brandeis intend when it offered Ali the degree in the first place? After all, her mission has been pretty clear over the last decade or so. There does not appear to be an alternate line of activism or scholarship taken up by Ali in the intervening time, so presumably Brandeis intended to honor her work in this field. Second question: What changed?

That brings us to the third question. Did no one at Brandeis bother to Google Ali before offering her the degree? Her speeches don’t pull punches about her perspectives on Islam and its practices. It’s a little late in 2014 for President Lawrence to be shocked, shocked at “certain of her past statements” in relation to the work that they apparently wanted to honor.

To answer the second question — because so far, questions one and three don’t lend themselves to answers other than incompetence – what changed is that the faculty erupted in outrage when it saw Ali on the list. Out of 350 faculty, “more than 85″ signed a petition demanding her removal from the honors list. The petition was started by the Muslim Students Association, which should have been easily foreseen by Brandeis in the first place. If popular opposition was enough to cancel the offer, then Brandeis shouldn’t have made it in the first place. Now, they look both incompetent and pusillanimous.

With that said, a couple of points should be noted. When Notre Dame invited abortion-supporting Barack Obama to speak at their commencement and presented him with an honorary degree, Catholics — including myself — heavily criticized them for doing so. At the time, I objected to the degree, which gave a tacit imprimatur to Obama’s abortion stand, while many others wanted the appearance canceled as well. Mary Ann Glendon refused to attend the ceremony and accept her Laetare award. Notre Dame’s Catholic students erupted in outrage too, but that didn’t keep Notre Dame from offering Obama their platform and their honorary degree. No one is entitled to an honorary degree or a commencement-speech platform, and when a university offers that to one who arguably promotes the antithesis of its mission, criticism is well justified.

The question here, of course, is whether that’s true with Brandeis and Ali. For some reason, Brandeis thought it didn’t and then thought it did. Brandeis did offer to host Ali to speak at the university:

Commencement is about celebrating and honoring our extraordinary students and their accomplishments, and we are committed to providing an atmosphere that allows our community’s focus to be squarely on our students. In the spirit of free expression that has defined Brandeis University throughout its history, Ms. Hirsi Ali is welcome to join us on campus in the future to engage in a dialogue about these important issues.

I’d agree that commencement should focus on the students, rather than on the guests. That’s an argument for not making these offers in the first place, not offering and then withdrawing them when the heat gets turned up. If Brandeis wants to make amends, they should dispense with this ambiguous offer and actively work to schedule an appearance so that she can make her case directly to the Brandeis community.

It’s time for us to be honest about Islam. It’s the only way we are ever going to be successful in combating terrorism. Those committing acts of terror aren’t radical Muslims. They are simply Muslims. They are doing what Islam teaches. Islam is not a “religion of peace,” it is a religion of violence, persecution, and subjugation. Yes, there are some peaceful Muslims in the United States. But THEY are the radicals. They are the ones who are not being true to Islam. The jihadists who want to fly planes into our buildings are the norm, not the exception.

But somehow we think that spying on our citizen’s e-mail, rather than admitting who our enemy is and dealing with them appropriately, is going to solve our problems…

I have always though “honorary degrees” were just another brick in the pedigree process liberals use to fluff up their tribe. Not surprising that the university who counts Aafia Siddiqui as an alum would rescind its offer to Ali.

Another thing: It’s especially shameful given that Brandeis University was founded as a Jewish-community sponsored institution. This is not to say that the university should only be open to or concerned about Jews, but one would think that such an institution would consider what suppression and fascism have brought to millions and not kowtow down to the demands of an Islamic supremacist organisation that was founded by Hamas members and sympathisers. Hamas’ own charter calls for the destruction of Israel and the requirement that Jews be driven into the sea.

Even more to the point, why is a historically Jewish institution knuckling under to the very people who state that killing Jews is an imperative of their “faith”?

Brandeis was founded in 1948 as a nonsectarian Jewish community-sponsored coeducational institution on the site of the former Middlesex University. The university is named for Louis Brandeis (1856–1941), the first Jewish Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

I am looking forward to the day when some university has to choose between CAIR and GLAAD. Although I cannot see how, since the only way GLAAD would object is if it’s an islamic speaker who is for burning gays at the stake–and usually they are quite quiet. I fail to remember any protests by GLAAD when Dinnerjacket spoke, for instance.

Vanceone on April 9, 2014 at 10:16 AM

When you were a child you asked “Why is the sky blue?”. As an adult you ask”Why do liberals ALWAYS side with Muslims?”. I know the answer on the sky question but not the one about liberals and Muslims. Do you suppose that they realize what would happen to most of them in an Islamic world? Can they be that obtuse to side with their philosophic opposite and actually defend them yet foment discord and boycotts against Israel which professes and lives the liberal lifestyle? Can a group of people be that stupid?

inspectorudy on April 9, 2014 at 10:17 AM

I wonder what the reaction would be if some Christian student group objected to having a Muslim speak at commencement.

This story pops up every year. Institution invites a speaker. Some radical group erupts in outrage. Institution reneges on invitation (which can’t be done in a graceful way).

Even if you don’t agree with everything they say or stand for, Condi Rice, Dr. Ben Carson, or Ayaan Hirsi Ali would all be outstanding commencement speakers. Is it too much for liberals to sit down, shut up, and be polite for a change?

The campaign for diversity of thought and inclusiveness will continue until everybody agrees.

So let me get this straight: a university founded by Jews lets a Muslim group stop a minority speaker from getting an honorary degree because they don’t like what she said? How many problems w/ this:

1 – First Amendment
2 – University – one truth – who’s afraid of the truth?
3 – Complainers: less than 25% (you know, fifth grade fractions/percentages: 85/350 = 24.8%) – what are they afraid of?
4 – She’s a minority?

Having dynamic speakers at commencement ceremonies is one of the most memorable and meaningful aspects of them. Youtube is littered with dynamic speakers from all different schools delivering entertaining and inspirational “send-offs” to the students. Ayaan Hirsi Ali would have been graceful, inspirational, thoughtful and very memorable. Brandeis is a disgrace and her rejection here is a huge loss for every student and faculty member who would have been in attendance for it. Because of the cowardice that Brandeis showed here all they have done is reward the leftists for acting like the close minded little fascists that they are. Shame on Brandeis. Shame on them.

You’ll find this from a piece that I wrote on Norway a few years ago interesting and, perhaps, enlightening:

A word of advice to my friends on the Left, the enemy of your enemy is not your friend. You might believe that making common cause with Islamists now will lead to your victory in the overthrow of capitalism and your installation of a Socialist welfare state and you may be right, but in the end, you will lose. There are more Islamists than there are of you. The Islamists are more vicious than you. They are also much worse than anything you imagine of the Right and about capitalism. Let’s just take one simple issue: Homosexuality.

The leftist Norwegian Labour government’s Ministry of Children, Equality, and Social Inclusion named Mahdi Hassan, a noted homophobe, as the 2009 Role Model of the Year. He looks like a very nice chap. Of course, Mein Kampf probably looked like a good book in Germany in the 1920s judging by the cover.

Hassan told the newspaper Arbeidets Rett that he wants a ban on homosexuality, based on the Qur’an. Does he support the death penalty for gays? That’s “up to each individual country to decide, but, in general, yes.”

Was he condemned? Needless to say, the homosexual community wasn’t thrilled, but other than that he was cheered with the Socialists applauding loudly.

“There is freedom of speech in Norway and in the Tynset Socialist Left Party we consider it unproblematic that Mahdi is opposed in principle to homosexuality. It is in accordance with his religion.”

- Stein Petter Løkken, leader of the Socialist Left Party in Hassan’s home kommune of Tynset.

Stein, Stalin had a name for you, “Useful Idiot.” You wear the dunce cap well.

A very good piece written from the Left…

Gay—or Left?

The author is sounding the alarm and telling the Left, especially the gay community, that the gig is up and it is time to make a decision when it comes to catering to Islam.

Which is the ONLY country in the Middle East that tolerates homosexuality?

Israel.

Who do the gay leftists support?

The Palestinians.

For example…

Spanish gay pride parade doesn’t want Israelis

Sources say pro-Palestinian groups led Madrid to cancel invitation extended to LGBT delegation

Bullies and cowards are quite often one and the same. Many in the LGBTQQI…ABC164Z0 community have no problem whatsoever in hounding out Eich from Mozilla, but what about some of Obama’s own Muslim advisers that have called for outrageous things to happen to Jews, gays, Christians, the West, etc? Exactly, but I am pretty convinced that they are deluding themselves if they believe they will prevail in the end. Ironically, the Left can thank the Soviets for ‘community organising’ and teaching the Muslim world how to agitate and harass the West.

Just like the French Revolution, they eventually end up consumed by the fire they started. The same thing happened in the USSR and other communist countries. The intellectuals and other ‘foot soldiers’ were prized…until the movement prevailed. Then, they were the first to be slaughtered. The leaders need the strength and voice of ‘many’ to obtain power, but ‘the many’ soon learn that the movement was never about ‘the people or the workers or whatever.’ It was about sheer determination by some to gain power over everyone else.

Because Islam aims to destroy Western civilization, as the left does. I could never figure out why the Jewish community are also overwhelmingly liberal when the fascist left are clearly anti-Semitic. Jimmy Carter is still mourning the loss of his good friend and soul mate Yasser Arafat

Ali is 100% correct about a war with Islam. ALL Muslims would rather see you dead than a non believer. Anyone who doubts it is an idiot or a fool.

Gee, and this wasn’t predictable.

“She is a compelling public figure and advocate for women’s rights, and we respect and appreciate her work to protect and defend the rights of women and girls throughout the world,” said the university’s statement. “That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.”

And what would those be, weasel? Self-deception? Self-loathing? Anti-Americanism? Don’t flatter yourself, Brandeis. You’re not unique. Those are the “core values” of 90% of academia.

The question is, why does the fascist left, which is quite atheistic and pro homosexual partner with radical Islamic extremists who execute gays?

rbj on April 9, 2014 at 10:04 AM

I sincerely wish one of our lib trolls would explain this. Seriously.

Deckard BR on April 9, 2014 at 11:46 AM

The petition was started by the Muslim Students Association

That alone is enough to warrant giving her an honorary degree.

GarandFan on April 9, 2014 at 11:49 AM

Way too much analysis. This is an American college administration. They’re 1. obtuse and 2. total cowards.

Some twit on a nominating committee saw that she was black, a woman and a Muslim and said, “great, she works.” It passed the first round. The offer was made. Then the Progressive sh*tstorm hit. Chistopher Hitchens, a sponsor of Hirsi Ali, noted at some of his talks that he would overhear little clutches of vexed Leftists cursing under the breath about Hirsi Ali, how they couldn’t figure out an easy way to demonize her. She had all the right badges of victimhood, but didn’t play a victim and loved America. Intolerable.

There are several obvious explanations. It’s just that they all make the lefties look either stupid or evil.

Fenris on April 9, 2014 at 11:51 AM

“That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.”

Also, important to note the implicit contempt for free speech here. She made “certain past statements” — in other words, she violated the rubrics of the orthodoxy.

Where are the feminazis?

Schadenfreude on April 9, 2014 at 11:54 AM

Ali was raised in a strict Muslim family, but after surviving a civil war, genital mutilation, beatings and an arranged marriage, she renounced the faith in her 30s.[my emphasis]

“This makes Muslim students feel very uneasy,” Joseph Lumbard, chairman of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies, said in an interview. “They feel unwelcome here.”

Old Islamic joke: the genital mutilations, beatings and arranged marriages will continue until Muslim students feel welcome.

Barnestormer on April 9, 2014 at 11:55 AM

Can a group of people be that stupid?

inspectorudy on April 9, 2014 at 10:17 AM

The question really is: why is it that such groups of people are ever *not* stupid?

Case in point: the recent group of Harvard students on a trip to Israel (sponsored by Jewish student organizations) who thought it would be a great idea to have a photo of themselves taken posing around Arafat’s tomb?

Did *no one* in the group stop and say “hey, this might not be the best idea in the world”?

Now we have a widely circulated photo that can be used to suggest that Harvard essentially endorses Arafat’s goals. This was not the intent of the students, but they should have seen it coming.

Hirsi Ali isn’t a woman to them. As in the title of her book, she’s an “Infidel.”

Muslims love women and feel everyone should own a few.

Goebbels and the Islamists appreciate every one of them, and they do take notes.

Hitler had his brownshirts executed, after he used them. He hated them the most.

…she renounced the faith in her 30s.

She’s an apostate, an unpopular status among the faithful.

Barnestormer on April 9, 2014 at 12:17 PM

The left is not pro-Islam just as they’re not pro-poor nor “pro-choice”.

They’re anti-family, anti-rich and anti-Christian.

Thus revoking her honorary degree because of Muslim complaints isn’t due to support of Muslim causes… But not victimizing Muslims further and making the college appear to align themselves with white, male, Protestant values.

Skywise on April 9, 2014 at 12:20 PM

“That said, we cannot overlook certain of her past statements that are inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.”

So what are the dhimmi Universitie’s ‘core values’? That they bow down to their Muslim masters or face ‘death to the infidel’?

They will eventually face ‘death to the infidel’ anyway.

The lady deserves to be honored for her fight against the barbarians.

Actually their hierarchy is

1) Ask infidel to convert to Islam
2) If no, then infidel must be subjucated and pay taxes.
3) If refusal, then kill.

Those barbarians with less patience go straight to 3.
