Video: ABC uses Westboro Baptist protests to illustrate story about Brendan Eich

posted at 4:01 pm on April 4, 2014 by Allahpundit

A nice catch by Newsbusters. It’s bad enough that ABC would equate all opposition to gay marriage with the “GOD HATES FAGS” strain, but distinguishing the two is especially important in reporting on the Eich saga. The reason this is controversial is because, by all accounts, the guy wasn’t abusive towards gay employees. Mozilla’s chairwoman admits that he never behaved in a way that “was not in line with Mozilla’s values of inclusiveness.” The case against him remaining as CEO rests entirely on one political donation he made as a private citizen more than five years ago. If you’re illustrating that point with footage of angry Phelpsians screeching at a protest, you’re stacking the deck on viewer perceptions of Eich. ABC wouldn’t do that, would they?

Two tangential points this afternoon. One: Some conservatives on Twitter are asking Mozilla and OK Cupid (the dating site that protested Eich’s promotion by asking users to drop Firefox when accessing their site) to stop using Javascript too in the name of equality. Javascript was, after all, written by … Brendan Eich, back in the mid-90s when he worked for Netscape. Their response, I assume, will be that it benefits no one to drop Javascript now; Eich, after all, doesn’t get royalties or licensing fees from it (I think) so he’s not being enriched by their use of it. What if he was, though? Would they drop it then, or are grand gestures for equality in the offing only if they don’t interfere with business too much? The truth here, I think, is that this is more about Silicon Valley subculture than it is about going to the mat for gay rights. They’re happy to go on using Eich’s work; no doubt there are other projects at Mozilla he was spearheading that they’ll keep working on notwithstanding the taint of social conservatism. I’d even bet that Eich would still be welcome at the company, notwithstanding public knowledge about his Prop 8 donation, if he hadn’t been named CEO. Once he became the face of Mozilla, though, the board had to show the rest of the industry that they’d toe the line institutionally on progressive values. That’s the lesson from all this for social cons in tech. They’ll still hire you; just don’t expect any really big promotions.

Two: Why did Eich resign rather than force the board to oust him? I don’t understand that. I assume that, having worked so many years to make Mozilla successful, he simply couldn’t bear to let the uproar drag on and damage the company he’d built, so he quit. But by doing that rather than forcing the people around him to go on and burn him at the stake, he handed them a convenient defense to their critics:

See, Eich wasn’t pushed. He jumped. Mozilla’s all about tolerance and differing viewpoints ‘n stuff. Why, if anything, it’s Eich who caved to the mob by committing seppuku under pressure. He shouldn’t have made it this easy for them.

See, Eich wasn’t pushed. He jumped. Mozilla’s all about tolerance and differing viewpoints ‘n stuff. Why, if anything, it’s Eich who caved to the mob by committing seppuku under pressure. He shouldn’t have made it this easy for them.

Eich was apparently getting calls to resign from within the company…Mozilla’s blog post on this:

Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.

We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.

Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO. He’s made this decision for Mozilla and our community.

Mozilla believes both in equality and freedom of speech. Equality is necessary for meaningful speech. And you need free speech to fight for equality. Figuring out how to stand for both at the same time can be hard.

Our organizational culture reflects diversity and inclusiveness. We welcome contributions from everyone regardless of age, culture, ethnicity, gender, gender-identity, language, race, sexual orientation, geographical location and religious views. Mozilla supports equality for all.

We have employees with a wide diversity of views. Our culture of openness extends to encouraging staff and community to share their beliefs and opinions in public. This is meant to distinguish Mozilla from most organizations and hold us to a higher standard. But this time we failed to listen, to engage, and to be guided by our community.

While painful, the events of the last week show exactly why we need the web. So all of us can engage freely in the tough conversations we need to make the world better.

We need to put our focus back on protecting that Web. And doing so in a way that will make you proud to support Mozilla.

What’s next for Mozilla’s leadership is still being discussed. We want to be open about where we are in deciding the future of the organization and will have more information next week. However, our mission will always be to make the Web more open so that humanity is stronger, more inclusive and more just: that’s what it means to protect the open Web.

We will emerge from this with a renewed understanding and humility — our large, global, and diverse community is what makes Mozilla special, and what will help us fulfill our mission. We are stronger with you involved.

Thank you for sticking with us.

Mitchell Baker, Executive Chairwoman

Maybe I’m wrong, but the bolded text portion, to me, suggests there was some sort of pressure put on Eich to resign.

You have to really search hard to find it on the FoxNews site *around 4pm(HA time)*

See if you can find the Eich story without doing a text search. I couldn’t. It seems like such a huge event. One that will be talked about ,on both sides, as pivotal for years to come. It buried on the Drudge page as well. Why did the so called RW media (not HA – TY Ed and Allah) miss this?

It’s time to disabuse ourselves of the notion that the media is a distinct ,on the sidelines entity who just happens to favor or cheer for the left and their agenda. And that at some point, they will awaken and re-discover their noble, journalistic instincts and report with the guiding principles of truth and fairness.
.
The media (information AND entertainment) IS the main component of the left establishment.
.
It is overwhelmingly populated and dominated by leftists who believe their ‘journalisitic’ mission is to enlighten all to the joys of it-takes-a-village statism and state enforced social nihilism.
.
The mainstreamers are the same as the ones that run and work for Kos,Huffington, etc.

Observe how easily they move back and forth between their media jobs and Dem government and left organization political gigs.

Dr. Carlo Lombardi on April 4, 2014 at 4:34 PM

The media does this on purpose. Part of the reason they love covering Westboro is because they know the ignorant will assume that all Christians are like Westboro, hateful foaming at the mouth anger filled people who go out of their way incite hateful rhetoric against gays.

The media has built up this caricature. Are you a Christian? Do you believe marriage is between a man and a woman? Do you believe homosexuality is a sin? Then you are no different than Westboro. You are a hateful bigot who stands on street corners shouting that if you are gay, you are going to hell, and sit in a church with a hate filled pastor whose sermon every Sunday consists of how evil it is to be gay and how you are going to hell if you are gay.

When in reality, most Christians I know are anything but. Yes, we oppose gay marriage, yes, we believe homosexuality is a sin. But we are not hateful. We are not bigots. We are still kind, caring, and peaceful. Just because we have a certain set of beliefs and values about homosexuality, doesn’t make us angry, hateful, violent people that seek to oppress gay people.

I wish the media and gay lobby would understand that you can oppose gay marriage and believe homosexual acts are a sin, and at the same time, not be a bigot or hate mongerer.

Lots of luck with that change in thinking. The media and gay lobby sincerely thinks they are just like the freedom riders, activists, and protesters that brought about the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. As if being told that they can’t purchase a wedding cake is akin to being told they have to sit in the back of the bus or something.

On this anniversary of MLK’s assassination, it really is offensive that gays liken their place in society to that of blacks in 1955 Mississippi. If those involved in the Civil Rights Movement had focused on not being able to get a wedding cake, the Jim Crow laws would still be in place.

It’s a similar story with women’s treatment by the court system. It is well known that the court system is biased against males, especially where children are involved. Now ask yourself, how did it get this way? 90% of the lawmakers, judges, lawyers, you-name-it that made the system sexist against men…were men.

It’s amazing how badly the majority will consistently shoot themselves in their proverbial feet in favor of the minority in situations like this.

There’s no room left in this diverse, multi-cultural, freedom-loving country for you bible-thumping rednecks. Time for you to go!

Do you remember what bible-thumpers cling to? Their bibles and their guns.

Remember the gun part when you think its time for them to go. You might get a surprise as to who is actually leaving.

The Democrats created the WBC to create an atmosphere whereby you will be afraid to speak out against the worst kind of societal destruction lest you be associated with them.

It was a brilliant idea. You gotta hand it to the ‘rats that they have some very intelligent people at the top.

nullrouted on April 4, 2014 at 5:12 PM

Why is the comparison unfair? We all know that “traditional marriage supporter” is just a code word for “gay basher”. If it were up to conservatives, America would devolve back to the days of homosexuals being lynched from trees. I bet you all miss the days when gay men were forced to keep their love sharing confined to YMCAs and gas station bathrooms.

But, it’s a new day homophobes! We will not go quietly in the night. It’s pretty easy to see, he lays it on thick sometimes, but just consider this passage here:

I join with my homosexual brothers & sisters, as well as all other normal Americans with innate and normal desires for pedophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, paraphilia, fetishism, transvestism, sadism, masochism, exhibitionism, voyeurism, gender identity disorder, and dozens of other glorious and perfectly natural life preferences.

…and lol, as you should ;)

Really? Sarcasm only works if you can tell the difference; liberals have gone so insane that you really can’t.

What, they didn’t show the video of goosestepping Nazis? I suppose we should commend them for their restraint.

Socratease on April 4, 2014 at 5:24 PM

Why did Eich resign rather than force the board to oust him? I don’t understand that.

He never asked to be a symbol of the anti-SSM or pro-free-campaign-expenditure causes. This came down to relationships between individuals, and why cause an additional uproar if you just want the problem to go away? I’ve gotten the “you have to resign” ultimatum (when a start-up assigned me to a project that was doomed not to head anywhere, and didn’t). Generally it comes with some financial benefits, but the bigger benefit is no burnt bridges or further lowering of morale. If he wanted to be a martyr for free speech that would be one thing, but he probably just wanted to be able to have a career. This lets him do that.

Just remember, Phelps, like Alec Baldwin before him, was a DEMOCRAT!

Iblis on April 4, 2014 at 5:49 PM

The case against him remaining as CEO rests entirely on one political donation he made as a private citizen more than five years ago.

And this is what the left has become today.

The people who used to decry witch hunts now lead them.
