Networks refused to give Obama evening airtime to announce ObamaCare enrollment milestone

posted at 2:41 pm on April 4, 2014 by Allahpundit

I’m surprised. They’re always reluctant to donate valuable primetime advertising air to the White House, but they’ll do it when the issue is pressing enough. This wasn’t? It would have been O’s big chance to undo some of the political damage to his party among casual voters before the midterm campaigns get rolling. You would think after they helped elect this guy twice that they wouldn’t now deny him a soapbox to crow that, by one and only one very dubious measure, his — and the left’s — big “achievement” is a success. Baffling.

Et tu, NBC?

White House officials sought valuable primetime air for a rare, impromptu Tuesday night address to tout the accomplishment of signing up more than 7 million people under the Affordable Care Act.

But network officials refused to make the kind of accommodation they did previously for the announcement that Osama Bin Laden had been killed, for instance, and Obama was left instead cutting into the much smaller audiences of Ellen and other daytime shows.

Three sources familiar with the request confirmed the White House asked for the primetime slot in their effort both to emphasize a bright moment following the challenging roll out and, more important, to try to reintroduce the country to a law that remains unpopular. One top White House official referred BuzzFeed to another top official for comment on the conversation with networks, but the second official did not respond to a request for comment.

Maybe it was a pure bottom-line calculation or maybe they concluded that, at this point in his presidency, a direct appeal from The One himself just isn’t going to move the needle much — especially on ObamaCare, where public sentiment has been static (with occasional exceptions) for ages. If they’re going to sacrifice some bucks for The Cause, they want some political bang in return. Which makes me wonder: Why didn’t the White House organize a televised concert or something on behalf of ObamaCare? That sounds ridiculous to you and me, but then having the president trade one-liners with Zach Galifianakis sounds ridiculous too and yet it allegedly helped boost traffic to Healthcare.gov. They’ve already used numerous celebrities as a shiny object to get the attention of twentysomethings over the last few months. There’s no shortage of them who’d volunteer to perform for His Majesty if asked, I’m sure — Katy Perry, for one, is famously a proud Obama fan — and the networks would have happily scheduled that in primetime. Why didn’t it happen? They could have had two or three hours of A-listers lined up with the Healthcare.gov web address and an 800 number onscreen the whole time. Red-staters would have hated every minute of it, but so what? The ObamaCare battle lines have already been drawn.

Exit question: It’s a fait accompli that former President Obama will end up making a cameo in a Galifianakis movie someday, isn’t it? Sigh.

Doubtful. Galifianakis doesn’t have much in the works anytime soon aside from a supporting role in a Michael Keaton flick. Obama will have to settle for his recent “cameo” in Schwarzenegger’s Sabotage.

1.) He burned their keisters back in September by requesting prime time space to deliver a speech about nothing;

2.) The networks may still orgasm about his ideology, but they can read polls — Obama’s not The Messiah anymore, and if they put him on, not only will they lose viewers and ad revenue for the show he replaces, but viewers who switch over the channels not carrying Obama’s speech may not switch back again the rest of the night.

The network may love the idea of Obamacare that costs other people money. But they’re not going to cost themselves money by giving him time to take a victory lap.

Given how the ratings of each successive American Idol: Barack HUSSEIN Obama Show went down from the previous episode I don’t blame the networks for canceling.

Why give up their prime time ratings and revenue just to allow President LameDuck dance in front of Styrofoam moving goalposts while spiking a football (and missing)?

Ironically not showing this in prime time might actually HELP Obama and the Democrats, because the less attention called to Obamacare the better.

Still though, this RARE act of Defiance WILL NOT GO UNPUNISHED (no one defies the god-king), I am sure. Expect a redoubled effort to get Obama Regime “FCC monitors” into broadcast stations.

This is such a small, small little man we have in the Oval Office. So he and his Dem cohorts are celebrating forcing people to accept substandard insurance and risking their health and their very lives. Its not like any of us have a good option now have we? Then what does this petty little man do but want to go on national tv and gloat about holding a gun to our heads? The ONLY reason the Obama media turned him down was because they needed the ad revenue and knew an Obama gloat fest would cut into their profits. See the Obama media aren’t always anti-capitalist. If their girl Killery gets elected they will let her be on tv every night.

I hate Obama. I hate Democrats. I hate the media. I hate Killery.

Dog whistle for Sharpy and Jaka$$n to start their shakedown and boycott routine ?

burrata on April 4, 2014 at 3:06 PM

I suspect the glow from Obama’s halo has been tarnished for them in regards to Obamacare. Everyone knows it is all crap numbers anyway. Come on, two weeks ago Carney wouldn’t or couldn’t give a single number when asked multiple times about how many enrollments they had at that time, and now they can give them to us down to the second decimal place?

There was an article in the Lexington KY newspaper yesterday touting the success of KYnect and the signups there. They gave exact numbers on how many people under 35 enrolled in health insurance plans and how many got Medicaid, by county. They had about eight different measured metrics with absolute numbers in that article, but they could only *estimate* the number of people who were previously un-insured, and they estimated about 2/3 previously were un-insured. B$.

I am calling B$ on any number from any Dem these days. Especially after the shenanigans with the BLS and cooking the unemployment numbers months before the election.

burrata on April 4, 2014 at 3:12 PM

I think its simply a matter of protecting the brand.

The backlash against ObamaCare has barely begun. People are still ‘exempt’ or riding a ‘waiver’. When the pain sets in, and it will, and the full impact of people’s anger with all things attached to ObamaCare really registers, the networks and the studios will want sufficient distance to protect their bottom lines from serious long term damage.

This might be the reason that gala ObamaCare-athon idea never came to fruition, too. While many of those celebrities would gladly hype Obama, the man,the president, perhaps some, or their management, has the sense to avoid ObamaCare and its collateral damage.

Walter Sobchak on April 4, 2014 at 3:28 PM

The networks are incredibly biased but not completely stupid. A move like this could have easily backfired on Obama because the main group buying the plans are those who had no choice after getting kicked off the plans they had. Like celebrating a TD pass after all the offensive lineman held, the receiver shoved the DB to the ground, and the QB was 10 yards past the line of scrimmage.

burrata on April 4, 2014 at 3:32 PM

I’m surprised they didn’t give it to him, but then again even they must realize it’s not at all newsworthy and worthy of a primetime address. Let’s kid ourselves for a second and take the enrollment numbers at face value…why is such a milestone deserving of a primetime address? Hell, why was it worthy of an afternoon one? To me, it’s akin to announcing how many cars were turned in during that Cash for Clunkers thing…even the media hasn’t stooped so low as to hand over their airtime for such propaganda…yet. (Instead, they just let their on-air personalities and so-called news divisions do that.)

I get this feeling that, deep down, the networks know that Obamacare is a real stinker. And as the stink spreads rapidly across the land, they don’t want to be tarnished with that stink (even though they were the ones who helped get it passed in the first place).

This is interesting, because it may be a sign that the networks are distancing themselves from Obamacare, so that when it really crashes and burns during the midterm elections, they don’t want to be associated with it. Too many people have been harmed by this bomb and the last thing the networks want is to be shown up for what they are, water boys carrying the ever heavier water for Obama.

Maybe the networks know what we already know, that this November is going to be a disaster for the Democrats and Obama and they don’t want to have anything to do with it. Hope so.

Honestly I think the media was doing a CYA as this would be pure political propaganda just before an election season and they could’ve opened themselves up to lawsuits for fair time under the FEC law.

That and/or they’re salivating over Republican money now that the funding is unlimited.

Balance of power has already shifted.

Not so baffling. It is called tough love. The speech he gave in the Rose Garden was awful, filled with lies about 7M enrollees and the statement that they were not out there trying to sell Obamacare (and he did use the term Obamacare during the speech- take that Nancy Pelosi). In other words that Obamacare sold itself and was a wildly popular government program.

The rat-eared wonder would not have done himself or the Dems any good with a prime-time speech.

Seriously? The 2012 elections had George Stephanopoulos throw an abortion question into a GOP primary debate about foreign policy at the behest of OFA. Candy “the hutt” Crowley put down her bucket of extra crispy long enough to wave a conveniently available transcript about the 9/12/12 Benghazi speech and back up the rat-eared wonder even though what Obama said was an outright lie.

The media isn’t worried about being called on political propaganda and they certainly aren’t worried about Obama’s FEC.

Happy Nomad on April 4, 2014 at 4:41 PM

The media refusing Obama his victory lap is either false or a sign they are trying to (dishonestly) gain some semblance of credibility. They’ve done nothing but blindly and I believe, purposely support an absolutely destructive agenda.

Replete with historic mendacity and corrupt processes that would have met generous scrutiny if the president had an “R” behind his name, it could not have happened without them. In fact, now that most American’s are finding out the truth our illustrious, lying media is becoming public enemy #1. People are waking up to realizing they let it happen. They are the American Vichy Collaborators and it didn’t end well for their 20th century predecessors.

I personally wish them a painful death. May their corporations crumble and with them, their destructive, despicable, dishonest propagandists. May they become ashes in the dust bin of history and a lesson for everyone who attempts that vocation in the future.

A truly “free” press cannot stand without honesty and truth. Without it, you’ve become collaborators in exterminating a nation. Good riddance, Neither me nor my family for generations will ever read or watch their tripe, or see it beyond the partisan exercise in prevarication it is.
