Video: Watch live Ft. Hood press conference at 10:15 PM EST

posted at 9:51 pm on April 2, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Four dead, including the shooter. Possible suspect: Spc. Ivan Lopez.

Earlier, doctors spoke about the victims in the hospital:

Dr. Harry Papaconstantinou told reporters the victims’ injuries included gunshots to their extremities, abdomens, chests and necks.

Others were being treated at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center on base.

“This was another sad day for central Texas,” said Dr. Glen Couchman, the hospital’s chief medical officer.

Update (Erika): Some bullet points from the presser, via Lt. Gen. Mark Milley:

-At around 4 P.M. a single shooter — whose name Milley declined to reveal, since next of kin had not yet been informed — began shooting in a medical brigade area.

-After killing 3 and wounding 16, the suspected shooter killed himself with his own gun, a .45-caliber handgun that was not registered with the base.

-The suspected shooter had “behavioral health and mental health” issues, according to Milley, and was in the midst of treatment for depression and anxiety but had not yet been diagnosed with PTSD.

-”There is no indication that this incident is related to terrorism although we are not ruling anything out,” Milley said.

This could be one reason.

To those who were offended at the chit chat prior to the start of the news conference (see thread topic and time stamps of the comments in question), please be assured that we are heartsick that something like this could happen again on our shores to our home-based military. Like people are wont to do prior to the start of a scheduled event, we chatted until the news conference started and then we gave the news conference our undivided attention.

Our hearts and prayers are with the wounded and slain troops. We pray for comfort God’s love will give the families who lost their loved ones today, for the full and speedy recovery of the troops who are in hospital and for guidance and wisdom to the doctors and nurses treating the hospitalized troops.

My condolences to the families of the innocents slain, words cannot express my grief.

My best wishes and hopes for a swift recovery to the injured and their families.

My ire to our government which abridges the rights of our citizens to lawfully keep and bear civil arms on US soil. We entrust our citizen soldiers with the finest and most lethal of arms we can provide, and no power on Earth has the right to demand that they go unarmed in a WAR WITHOUT A FRONT LINE and a WAR THAT RESPECTS NO BORDERS. While the killer is the actor, the blood is on the hands of our government for not entrusting our citizens who volunteer as soldiers to exercise their natural right to civil self-defense as CITIZENS.

The killer pulled the trigger.

Our government set up the targets. The blood is on the hands of those giving the orders that allowed this to happen and prevented our fellow citizens from being able to defend themselves. They are the ones who disarmed our citizen soldiers who volunteer to defend the Constitution. Their civil rights are violated with such orders.

Ivan Lopez had mental health issues and he was being treated for depression and anxiety, according to USA Today, and even though Lopez was receiving treatment he had not been officially diagnosed with post-traumatic stress. “He was undergoing a diagnosis process,” Lt. Lopez reportedly had a “self-diagnosed” brain injury after he served four months in Iraq in 2011. “He was not wounded in action,” Milley said.

Army confirmed Lopez not wounded overseas.

The shooter, who previously served in the Army National Guard in Puerto Rico, was assigned to the 13th Sustainment Brigade at Fort Hood, NBC News reported.

Update as of 11:59 p.m. EDT: The soldier who killed 3 people before turning a gun on himself was identified as Spc. Ivan Lopez, ABC News reported, citing law enforcement authorities, adding that an official did not identify Lopez at a news conference but said the shooter had arrived at Fort Hood in February from another base….”

Geez, the Preezy was heading off to a fund raiser when Benghazi hit the fan, and another fund raiser for Fort Hood part deux. I’m wondering though, did he give any shout outs at the fund raiser, before addressing the latest tragedy?
