Open thread: Are you ready for the ObamaCare victory lap?

posted at 3:41 pm on April 1, 2014 by Allahpundit

4:15 p.m. ET all across the dial. I’m looking forward to this the way I am to dental work, or to a new season of “The Walking Dead.” Our media, of course, is more excited. Here’s what landed in my inbox a few hours ago, fresh off the news that the White House has kinda sorta reached seven million sign-ups.

a

There’s no suspense about O’s announcement. Pelosi revealed earlier this afternoon that they have in fact reached seven million according to whatever definition of “enrollment” HHS is using right now. As you’ll see below, Carney was even more specific at today’s briefing, reminding us yet again that the White House is fully capable of producing up-to-the-minute data about enrollment when it’s in their political interest to do so. The big reason to watch O’s presser is to see if they saved any tidbits for him: If in fact the risk pool has improved and now consists of ~40 percent or so of young adults, or if they have to reason believe that a majority of new enrollees were previously uninsured, that’s news that Obama himself might want to break. Otherwise, this is just his way of using the bully pulpit to make things a bit easier for Democratic incumbents. Voters will spend the next seven months hearing from Republicans how the law is a trainwreck in progress. This is Obama’s big chance to reassure fencesitters that, with the enrollment target now reached, HHS is “on track” for good things. All is proceeding as hath been prophesied by our central planners/seers.

I think Phil Klein’s right as usual. The takeaway from today isn’t the precise number but rather the fact that a lot of people are now dependent upon this law, which makes the task of repeal a heavier lift than it seemed at New Year’s.

When Obama made his now-infamous promise that if people liked their health care plans they could keep them, he did so because he understood that any significant changes to the health care system would cause disruptions, so he needed to reassure Americans that their plans wouldn’t be affected by what he was proposing. It was a clear lie, but one that was rooted in an understanding of political realities.

If Republicans had taken over the White House last year and pursued the repeal of Obamacare, they could have done so at a time when the law’s beneficiaries were mostly theoretical. Now, however, Republicans will be facing the same problem Obama did. Only more so, because they’ve invested so much in the idea that nobody can lose coverage as a result of health care legislative changes.

The launch phase of the law was a test to see if Democrats could get the public to more or less accept the new system as a replacement for the old one by participating in it en masse. That phase is now over. Here’s the new phase:

Of course they wouldn’t. No wonder the White House tech team is popping the champagne today. Here’s Carney taking a little victory lap of his own, and naturally jabbing at Boehner and the Republicans in doing so.

APRIL FOOL!

crankyoldlady on April 1, 2014 at 3:44 PM

As intended. Like SS and other programs, the goal was to get enough people on the gov tit so to say, for then it would be impossible to repeal the law. The only way it will go away is if it falls onto itself…. which is going to happen.

So, a couple phantom sources from the White House say the enrollment is 7 million, and nobody questions that?

That’s like Danica Patrick saying she won the race just because some dude on her pit crew says so.

Is Obama credible ? Can you trust what he says ?

Its not he number, its the total lack of credibility on the ACA that is in question, as for 7 million …….. show me the money, or better yet, ask the insurance companies what the enrollment count actualy is.

“Enrollment” is such a big word, how come the White House cannot say it, define it, and get the insurance companies to confirm it ?

JayTee on April 1, 2014 at 3:49 PM

Congratulations – You were able to kick several million people off of insurance that they liked, and then with threats of fines and penalties force them to sign up for what you want. What a success.

which makes the task of repeal a heavier lift than it seemed at New Year’s.

Really, why would it be such a heavy lift to make 4-5 million people change from ObysmalCare back to some private insurer? The damage to those 4-5 million could not be any worse (by a long shot) than the displacement of 15-20 million or more caused by ObysmalCare thus far.

forest on April 1, 2014 at 3:53 PM

Pelosi revealed earlier this afternoon that they have in fact reached seven million according to whatever definition of “enrollment” HHS is using right now.

Did you really say this AP? Pelosi is the “go to” for confirmation of factual issues? Sorry, but “Pelosi” and “fact” don’t belong in the same zip code, let alone sentence.

tdarrington on April 1, 2014 at 3:56 PM

Why would these sign-ups be dependent on Obamacare? Do you not think any of them are paying a lot more for a lot less? Would a certain percentage of these people want to go back to the older coverage? The CEO of Cleveland Clinic said that 75% of Americans on OCare are paying higher premiums. Doesn’t matter how many signed up, if most are paying more.

ReaganWasRight on April 1, 2014 at 3:56 PM

So, a couple phantom sources from the White House say the enrollment is 7 million, and nobody questions that?

CurtZHP on April 1, 2014 at 3:45 PM

No, and it’s the reason Obama’s numbers aren’t in the 20s. He can basically say anything he wants and he’s never called on it. Oh sure, once in a blue moon, a left-wing rag will give him 4 Pinocchios or award him with the “Lie of the Year”, but there’s never any follow-up to that. And the reason I know is because if there was, he’d been hammered today over this 7 million figure and the fact that he’s offered no data whatsoever to back it up. We literally know nothing about the makeup of that 7 million which by itself should cause every American to question its validity.

Doughboy on April 1, 2014 at 3:57 PM

tommer74 on April 1, 2014 at 3:49 PM

What does it say about the plan when, even with the threat of fines and an IRS that has now become a political weapon, people still aren’t flocking to the site to sign up. The only reason most of the 7 million did was fear. Fear of having no insurance (a fear drilled into them by the leftist media), and fear of government retribution.

CurtZHP on April 1, 2014 at 3:57 PM

which makes the task of repeal a heavier lift than it seemed at New Year’s.

It will be much harder after the insurance cos are nationalized in a single payer system

tdarrington on April 1, 2014 at 3:57 PM

I can’t take it. This regime and the media want us to believe that the only problems with this so-called law are the website and the number of sign-ups. Oh, there might be a few “tics” to smooth out, like Debbie Blabbermouth Schultz said. It’s truly disgusting to watch what’s happening to this country.

TarheelBen on April 1, 2014 at 3:58 PM

I’m sure the media will be just as excited to report the number of people that have actually paid if it ever gets released and will undoubtedly be a few million short of 7 million.

supernova on April 1, 2014 at 3:59 PM

It was a clear lie, but one that was rooted in an understanding of political realities.

No. It was rooted in the fact taht Barky is an 84 IQ pathological liar who doesn’t give a damn about anything, other than his drive to harm America and Americans.

“Political reality” had nothing to do with the criminal act that was the forced passage of BarkyCare and then the later treasonous knifing of America by Benedict Roberts and his SCOTASS. Barky didn’t care about health insurance or health care or anything. He just wanted to force a big anti-American POS down our throats or break our institutions while trying.

As to repeal possibilities changing in any way … LOL. Repeal is no more difficult now than it ever was. If the rat-faced back-stabbing Vichy GOP had done its job in 2011 and repealed it then (they had handfuls of CRs and debt limits and “must pass” legislation to attach it to) then we would have all been spared and the US probably would still be alive. But … the GOP turned on the Tea Party as their first move, didn’t do jack about BarkyCare, gave Barky and his dem junta everything they wanted … and now we are all captive subjects of the American Socialist Superstate.

As to the 7 million faux number … who cares how many people signed up through exchanges? I don’t care. It has nothing to do with the fact taht BarkyCare is un-American, un-Constitutional, was criminally passed, has been criminally modified over and over and is the most ridiculous, insane POS legislation there has ever been, here. I don’t care if 100 million people signed up for it. It is still an intellectual offense and it needs to be repealed while everyone who voted for it or supported it in any way need to pay for their treasonous actions, before they eventually go to hell, where they belong. And, yes, it was treason to force it us.

I’ve said before, will say it again – boil the frog slowly, yer in; stop smackin’ idjits with a hammer after years of doing so, “Whut’s up?” Lie, cheat, steal, cook the numbers, scream ‘racist’, divide the People, organize disorganization, marginalize the Constitution, propagandize, indoctrinate kids, revise history, ignore reality, kill God and babies, make morality ‘relative’, equivocate all religions/cultures, demonize traditions, corrupt elections and whole peoples, destroy free speech and the capacity of individual effort to succeed, create the mantra of ‘self esteem’ exclusive of individual accomplishment, feminize males, create the ‘rights’ of sexual deviancy – I could go on, but my head just exploded. Bottom line: We’ve been doomed for quite some time.

Mission Accomplished!

Sven on April 1, 2014 at 4:03 PM

So what? Why is this an important milestone? It doesn’t change the fact that it has been an unnecessary disaster.

To gloat about 7 million sign ups in no way mitigates the countless negative impacts felt by many tens of millions more. It in no way changes the fact that disrupting the health care market for 300 million Americans to benefit 6-7 million is a high price to pay. 6 million BTW is only 2% of the population.

HOW can this be considered a success?

This number is meaningless and irrelevant.

Here it comes.

I expect one by one, for Republicans to start dropping like flies and touting the “We can’t repeal now, the only thing we can do now is fix/tweak it” and no longer attempting to fight or repeal this law.

It’s coming. They will start falling in line. The question is will the folding come from the blue state Republicans, or the leadership?

Its Fun With Numbers starring Barack Hussein Obama and The Juiceboxer Sextet.

Remember that we don’t know who has paid, who signed up to avoid taxes and won’t pay and then there is the demographics of doom ahead.

What will all these people do when the insurance companies hike rates to cover all the sick people and lack of young people purchasing insurance? And what will they do when insurance companies decide to not continue offering health insurance?

We have smoke, mirrors, gaming numbers, lies, and the uncertain future. And with all Obama has done, any future President can just say that he or she isn’t going to bother enforcing ANY PART of the ACA… because Obama has set that precedent, as well. Obama has already created the way to kill it with his own duplicity… that is if it doesn’t implode later this year when insurers start telling what they will do NEXT YEAR right around election time. That will actually start to dribble out in AUG when businesses start to do their planning for next year.

This isn’t the locking in of an entitlement: it is the beginning of the end of the entitlement system, itself.

Only Nixon could go to China.

Only Obama can so destroy a program that it takes the entire system with it.

Ironically this fabricated number could be fatal to the Dems in the midterm elections. Obamacare has been unpopular for over 4 years. It’s not going to suddenly become popular overnight just because Obama and the Dems say it’s working out great(like they haven’t already been doing that since 2010?). But now a bunch of vulnerable incumbents like Landrieu will give into temptation and join in the victory lap which will only motivate Republicans and independent voters even more to give them the boot in November.

Is Barry going to mention that fact that 4 out of 5 (80%) of Obamacare sign-ups are “paying” for their O-Care policies with subsidy checks they receive from the U.S. Treasury?

AZCoyote on April 1, 2014 at 4:21 PM

As long as we’re just making up numbers, I’ve got some nice large ones to put on my bank account, and they would be just as legit as anything the administration says.

Sure … why not ? . . . : )

listens2glenn on April 1, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Obama walks out, only 3 minutes late. He can’t wait to brag about these phony numbers. Biden behind him with big sh!t-eating grin. These people are revolting.

The media cheers. “So this is how liberty dies – with thunderous applause.”

TarheelBen on April 1, 2014 at 4:21 PM

and naturally jabbing at Boehner and the Republicans in doing so.

You are equally scroomed by both parties. The R scumbags and scumhags enable the D-rats. May all burn in Hell/hell.

Schadenfreude on April 1, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Obama never fails to amaz me with his failure at well everything the numbers aren’t specific at all. So I call BS the guy could not run a lemonade stand…

sorrowen on April 1, 2014 at 4:23 PM

Do you think he’ll start on time, since he’s basically there to gloat? Or will he still keep the minions waiting?

CurtZHP on April 1, 2014 at 4:15 PM

It takes them some time to teach him to read what’s on the teleprompter.

Obama pants on fire: “Premiums have risen more slowly since the ACA passed than anytime in the past 50 years”

Dissed by the previous coyotes in heat.

Schadenfreude on April 1, 2014 at 4:24 PM

Obama says, “because of this law 8 million seniors saved money on medications.” Excuse me? What part of its implementation caused that to happen. Was it the massive cuts to medicare which went into effect? It’s incredible – this con man can say whatever the hell he wants, and few will challenge him.

TarheelBen on April 1, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Katie Pavlich @KatiePavlich
“This law has made our healthcare system a lot better” -Obama. Because doctors leaving, rationed care and expensive premiums are way better!

Flora Duh on April 1, 2014 at 4:25 PM

And here comes the sack o’ shite with his deranged sidekick to lie once again with aplomb and the absolute certainty no one will hold him accountable – no one.

I have to turn the sound down of course, otherwise I’d have to bubble-wrap the TV to prevent my fists from going through it.

StubbornGreenBurros on April 1, 2014 at 4:25 PM

But beneficiaries of what??? Millions of people have been forced off of the policies they liked and, more important, could actually afford and now they are paying much higher premiums, much higher co-pays, and much higher deductibles. So why should the middle class people forced into this mess be happy about it and want to continue it? And once the premiums really start to skyrocket because of the lack of young people in this system, you are really going to see a rebellion.

So I’m not getting why the administration is so happy? These people who have been royally screwed are not going away and, guess what? The VOTE too. The numbers are the numbers, and as long as people are paying more money for worse service and they keep losing the doctors they liked, they are not going to be pleased.

The only people making out in all this are the people on Medicaid, and good luck to all of them trying to find a doctor that will accept it. It’s great for the low information voters to have “insurance,” but if there are no or very, very, few doctors willing to accept it, then what good is it? They will begin to realize this too very quickly.

Libertyship46 on April 1, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Ok numbers are BS for BS gloating ego session Obama only cares about.

And there he goes with the bogus “if you’re a woman you can no longer be charged more just cuz you’re a woman” women use more healthcare!

Flora Duh on April 1, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Whatever the final #, any GOP health care proposal will now have to grapple with millions of Obamacare beneficiaries

All you who attacked Ted Cruz for wanting repeal now may now apologize.
