Braley camp: He knew he was being recorded when he disparaged Iowa farmers and Grassley

posted at 9:21 am on April 1, 2014 by Guy Benson

Many of us assumed this recording was made surreptitiously.  It must have been. There’s no way a statewide office-seeker from Iowa would knowingly demean farmers and a beloved state political figure on tape, right?  Wrong, says the Braley campaign, via the Des Moines Register:

Braley’s campaign strategists say the candidate knew he was being videotaped at the private fundraiser when he made the remark that has the political world buzzing, describing Chuck Grassley as “a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school.” They think the GOP is seriously overhyping the videotape, and that it will backfire. “I think they’re overplaying it like they overplayed Obamacare,” Jeff Link, a senior adviser for Braley’s campaign, told The Des Moines Register. “When most voters hear ‘Obamacare,’ they essentially tune it out because it’s become the proxy for negativity.”

And what do Iowans think of the man most associated with Obamacare — the other issue Republicans are “overplaying”?  From Quinnipiac’s March 2014 poll, taken before Braley’s comments went viral:

Although Team Braley shrugs off their man’s foot-in-mouth mistake in this article, their sloppy and panicked response tells a different story. Oops:

The Braley campaign misspelled a couple of basic Iowa-farm-related words –detasseling and baling – in its press release defending the U.S. Senate candidate’s street cred with farms and farmers. A sharp-eyed Des Moines Register editor noticed that the news release said: “Bruce grew up in rural Iowa and worked on Iowa farms, detassling corn and bailing hay.”

He’s one of you, Iowans. Oops, redux:

So he meant to say what he said, misspelled key farming terms in a defensive press release, then apparently just Googled “farm photo” and tossed it up online with zero due diligence. Solid rapid response, Braley campaign. Longtime observers of Iowa politics think this controversy will leave a mark, with CNN labeling Braley’s campaign “an epic mess:”

As we await Braley’s next flub, I’ll reiterate a question I asked last week. The Iowa Democrat warned his trial lawyer buddies in the clip that if Republicans take over the Senate next year, a non-lawyer (and a farmer, no less — yuck!) would be in line to chair the Senate Judiciary Committee. The horror.  Ah, but next in line for the chairmanship on the Democratic side is Sen. Dianne Feinstein…who never went to law school either. Is she also unqualified, Bruce? I’ll leave you with a 2009 clip that reminds us that Bruce is a real stickler for fancy credentials:

Massive hypocrisy and hubris when this tool’s campaign accuses the ‘pubs of ‘negative campaigning’. Guess whut. They’ll repeat it long and often enough that plenty of low intelligence, er, info voters will fall for it.

Braley’s campaign strategists say the candidate knew he was being videotaped at the private fundraiser when he made the remark

Nonsense. Remark aside, Braley was speaking beside a full bar set up. No politician being videotaped is going to do so standing next to a display of booze.

The arrogance is stunning.

Braley and Wendy Davis in Texas are running Red State campaigns that the Democrats have run for years on the coasts — use an urban coalition of the elites who are bi-coastal wanna-bes and the urban poor to lock up control of state government (and U.S. Senate seats), and you can tell farmers or anyone else outside of those areas just to pound sand.

New York’s had that divide for years with the Upstate-vs.-Downstate split, and California’s developed it in the past 35 years, with the Coastal cities emasculating the political power of the inland region. It’s probably still a little too early for the same tactics to work so brazenly in Iowa, let alone with Davis in Texas, but that’s the future blueprint the Democrats hope to use to makeover the middle of the country in the same image as their ‘successes’ on both coasts.

Wow, this douche is pretty snooty for a guy who went to Iowa State and the University of Iowa. Where, apparently, spelling doesn’t matter.

Happy Nomad on April 1, 2014 at 9:51 AM

Braley is my Congressman, sorry to say.

He is this clueless and tone deaf. He got some publicity earlier for complaining about not having towels in the House gym at the same time veterans were having to break through barricades to see the WWII memorial.

In the “Braley badgers witness” clip, at around 50 seconds, he asks if the Congressional hearing witness has a Masters in Public Policy.

One of the Republicans competing to face Braley for the US Senate race is Joni Ernst. She recently received some attention for her first TV ad about growing up castrating pigs.

Joni Ernst has a Masters Degree in Public Administration.

Oh, he knew he was being recorded. Well, that’s diferent. He’s a special kind of stupid in this day and age where social media can blast this out to the world in a matter of minutes. This cycle seems to be about Democrats imploding in a historic fashion, so I hope it continues.

I’ll put my money on Joni Ernst. Ought to be fun to watch.

As tasteless and upsetting as his opponents’ “castrating pigs” comment was, this one will prove more damaging.

I’m sorry, but I refuse to believe that the GOP is anywhere near this lucky…

JohnGalt23 on April 1, 2014 at 10:47 AM

Braley looks like he should be running a furniture store that will soon be having the inevitable up-to 70% off liquidation sale. And a local TV spot declaring “There’s no better time than now to buy a sofa from my daddy.” And don’t forget to quote some scripture at the end.

This happened at a Texas trial lawyers fundraiser. TX trial lawyers are the main group footing the bill for the effort to turn TX blue.

If this flub causes Iowa to be less blue, the irony will sweet, rich and chewy.

Happy Nomad on April 1, 2014 at 9:57 AM

The bold part provides your answer. Not only did you not know Braley is that guy -the overwhelming majority of his constituents don’t know it either. The press does it’s level best to make sure Democrat gaffes get thrown down the memory hole as quickly as possible. Oh, sure, they do report them -but they don’t harp on them for days, and they never, ever bring them up weeks and months and years later.

Sometimes though a gaffe is so big that it can’t fit down the memory hole, no matter what the press does. Braley’s gaffe seems to be one of them. I don’t know if it’s big enough to cost him the election, but it’s going to be a drag on him for sure.

djm1992 on April 1, 2014 at 11:12 AM

I detasseled–detasselled?–corn in high school (Illinois, not Iowa) but I think we can forgive some Ivy League intern for not knowing how to spell the term. “Bale” vs “bail” is a more obnoxious misspelling, though.

segesta on April 1, 2014 at 12:03 PM

This guy is really stupid and if he wins he could replace my senator Patty Murray as the most ignorant senator in the senate. She is also ignorant of Eastern Washington and she thinks Idaho starts at the crest of the Cascade Mountains.

garydt on April 1, 2014 at 12:07 PM

Bruce Braley doesn’t seem to grasp the concepts of diversity and inclusiveness.

J_Crater on April 1, 2014 at 12:13 PM

Of course he knew. How in the world can you be an adult candidate in this day and age and not know you’re going to be recorded everywhere you go on a cell phone, iPad, iPod, secret spy watch or a plain old tape recorder?? I guess he’s just a garden variety arrogant scumbag.

ImmigrantsWife on April 1, 2014 at 12:33 PM

OK, so I’m not a farmer – “detasseling and baling” sounds like Bill Clinton on Spring Break.
