Video: Juan Williams, Raffi Williams on diversity of thought

posted at 1:16 pm on March 29, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Daily Caller founder Tucker Carlson hosted an interesting tête-à-tête this morning on Fox between a staunch conservative and a well-known liberal on the lack of tolerance for diversity of thought demonstrated again this week, this time by a senior editor for Ebony Magazine. The two squared off — or actually supported one another as son and father, respectively and respectfully. RNC deputy press secretary Raffi Williams joined his father Juan Williams to blast the pervasive notions that ideology has to be linked to ethnicity, and Juan urged everyone to open their minds to new ideas rather than dismiss people out of hand:

It’s not just in minority communities where the conversation needs to open up, and not just on ethnicity where identity politics and closed-mindedness prevail. Juan mentions Condoleezza Rice and the cancellation of her speech at Rutgers. So far, the University of Minnesota is resisting a similar call to cancel a speech by Rice because of her work in the Bush administration — but that’s not stopping the calls to close UM’s doors to her:

Student and faculty activists are joining forces to pressure the University of Minnesota to rescind a speaking invitation to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is scheduled to deliver an April 17 lecture at Northrop Auditorium.

Rice, who also was national security adviser under President George W. Bush, was invited months ago to deliver a speech on civil rights as part of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ “Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series.”

But the University Senate has scheduled a vote next week on a resolution urging the school to disinvite Rice because of her role in the wartime policies of the Bush administration.

Another of the critics’ objections: her speaking fee of $150,000.

Andrea Cournoyer, a spokeswoman for the Humphrey School, rejected the notion of disinviting anyone. “Rescinding any kind of invitation would be inconsistent with our goal of promoting discussion and dialogue,” she said. The Humphrey School, in announcing the lecture, described Rice as “one of the most influential and powerful people in the world.”

Every speaker of this caliber runs six figures, so that’s a bit of a red herring. The issue is that the students and faculty don’t want to hear heterodox views on foreign policy and politics. Why not just stage a parallel event on the campus — and the UM campus in the Twin Cities is one of the largest in the country — as a counterpoint to Rice’s appearance? That way students and faculty can choose which speech to attend and make up their own minds about Rice’s views.  That would be true choice, free speech, and tolerance.

Kudos to the Humphrey Center, which consistently invites speakers from many different political viewpoints to speak and discuss issues. Let’s hope that cooler heads and broader minds prevail.

Just to be clear: this misses the point. The point is that these laws are clearly designed to reduce Democratic turnout.

How?

For whatever reason, key Democratic constituencies are less likely to have documentation,

How is that possible? Supposedly voter ID “disenfranchises” poor minorities and the elderly. However, you need ID you receive any state or federal benefit which undoubtedly poor people receive.

and Republicans recognize this and are using that fact to try to discourage otherwise legitimate voters from voting. Denying this insults our intelligence and forces us to question yours.

Claiming voter ID suppresses votes when everyone needs an ID to do anything these days is ridiculous. You look like a fool.

Why, for example, the attacks on early voting? On Sunday voting? Why did Florida erect significant legal barriers to the kind of registration drives mounted in college towns and minority neighborhoods?

urban elitist on March 29, 2014 at 6:16 PM

What democrats want is same day registration and voting … without ID. Give me a break. Voting is no harder than going down to the local Social Security office like I did the other day where everyone had to show ID just to get in. Stop treating minorities as if they can’t handle anything and need white liberals to hold their hand and guide them through life’s little challenges.

vlad martel on March 29, 2014 at 6:27 PM

Actually, “of course” is meant to underscore that you have neglected repeatedly to support your central point, that there was voter intimidation. it’s a reminder that you need to get around to that to be taken seriously.

“Clearly” is a signal that the I ifnd your denial of what is so patently obvious — why do you think this craze has swept repub, ican statehouses in the face of absolutley no evidence of significant voter fraud? — suggests that you are either intellectually dishonest or just not bright.

“Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R) said that the voter ID law passed by the legislature would help deliver the state for Mitt Romney in November.

“Pro-Second Amendment? The Castle Doctrine, it’s done. First pro-life legislation – abortion facility regulations – in 22 years, done. Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done,” Turzai said at this weekend’s Republican State Committee meeting , according to PoliticsPA.com.”

urban effetist on March 29, 2014 at 6:28 PM

Please define “significant”.

Is it a number? A percentage?

And remember before answering that Democrats have in the past stolen elections using “insignificant” vote/voter fraud. In those cases, they did not need “significant” numbers of stolen or fraudulent votes to win. The closeness of the Florida 2000 Presidential election (53 votes?) proves that, as does the relatively small margin of “victory” for Democrat Al Franken’s stolen victory in MN.

And another thing: was the Democrat vote/voter fraud in Texas and Chicago in the 1960 Presidential election “significant”?

I have a relative who is a small business owner and a strong tea partier. Tea Party to the core when it comes to fiscal issues. Black like me and cannot stand Obama for anything. I asked him why he voted twice for Obama knowing he cannot stand any of his fiscal policies. Answer- The republicans are anti minority. I will rather vote for a politician who i can’t stand on the fiscal side than a politician who hates me for the color of my skin.

Lovely fiction. But in the real world, someone who was stupid enough to make those kind of decisions based on skin color rather than financial acumen would be bankrupt and then some.

The racist hatred of the black community impairs their ability to do business. Since the black community deems education “acting white” and idolizes laziness and welfare dependence, the black community continues to fail.

I talk to other blacks like me who tend to be very conservative fiscally on why they aren’t republicans and the answer is always the same. The republican party is filled with racists.

Of course. Because of your racist hatred for Republicans, you won’t better yourself or get jobs; you’ll just continue to vote for lower standards, less education, and more welfare, until you end up as feral animals.

You and your fellow “conservative blacks” are really stupid people. Furthermore, you’re all operating illegally, since you insist you have no voting ID whatsoever and therefore could not drive, collect welfare, hold a job, get any type of loan, or operate any type of business that required credit.

“Wouldn’t have been stopped by voter ID laws”?

How desperate can the little urban racist get?

One has to remember that the Obama Party endorsed and supported Melowese Richardson and everything she did. Obama supporters tried to block the investigation, Obama supporters tried to destroy evidence, and now Obama supporters like urban racist are shrieking that it’s not illegal to vote multiple times.

This shows you the psychosis of urban racist. The reason urban racist screams “suppression” is because urban racist believes that Obama supporters should be allowed to vote multiple times and illegally. This is the mental sickness of urban racist, who believes that it is so important to destroy conservatives and put leftist racists in power that laws must be broken.

The mental breakdown of urban racist is complete. Urban racist is now shown to be completely opposed to any rule of law, including its support of illegal and fraudulent voting and its endorsement of voter intimidation. The Obama Party urban racist represents is utterly lawless and will disobey the law at every opportunity to gain power.

http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/22436935/poll-worker-melowese-richardson-pleads-no-contest-to-voter-fraud

As for indictments…

This week, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced that he is pursuing illegal voting charges against three individuals indicted by a grand jury, one of whom is 54-year-old nun Marguerite Kloos.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Sister Kloos told investigators that she filled out an absentee ballot for another nun who died a month before last year’s presidential election. Kloos, who stepped down as Dean of the Division of Arts and Humanities at the College of Mount St. Joseph last week, faces a sentence of up to 18 months in prison if convicted.

A 75-year-old widower faces the same sentence. Russell Glassop is accused of filling out an absentee ballot for his wife, who died before the November election.

Plenty more stories where that one came from.

Since urban racist will not vote fairly or follow the laws fairly, then the Obama regime urban racist represents is illegitimate. It is in office in direct violation of our laws. The Florida 2000 fiasco underscores the success of the Republican strategy. Indiscriminately bounce blacks off the voter rolls and sew chaos in the polling places, and you can get 600 democrats to stay home and you can wine.

urban effetist on March 29, 2014 at 6:40 PM

Tell us again how much the NAACP and their partners “won” in their lawsuit against Florida. Hint: it was ZERO. They ended up with a $75,000 “donation” from FloridaChoice.

Which means that the NAACP and their partners could not credibly prove their allegations in a court of law.

Your real problem? Al Gore would never have needed to win Florida in the first place to become President in 2000. The only reason he needed to win the Sunshine State was because the voters of his own home state of Tennessee voted for his Republican opponent.

Those “bogus statistics” came from the Federal Government. Are they all Racists too?

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2014 at 6:56 PM

I remember that aftermath quite well in central Florida. They went over to Bethune-Cookman College, all black, and started interviewing every black youth they could. All claimed to have registered to vote but were denied. Bullshit.
Going into the boardwalk arcades for the better part of 20 years, I noticed one thing. For the entire day, the places operate efficiently. As soon as it gets dark out, the blacks come out. Suddenly, every black kid has ‘lost’ a quarter in one of the machines. Amazing how racist those machines are.
The same with the voting registration. They claim they registered. Yet can one produce a registration card? Nope. I have several expired ones. They mail those out fairly quickly once registered.

Lanceman on March 29, 2014 at 6:56 PM

If you are having problems believing that laws that prevent blacks from voting on Sunday after church (something we have always been doing) is anti minority, then i don’t know what else to tell you.

It’s because white people go to church more often than black people.

The basic problem is that black people, as stated by Melowese Richardson and endorsed by the Obama Party, believe in and support illegal voting and state that they have a right to vote multiple times to put their candidate into office.

Since black people cannot follow the law, there is no reason to facilitate their lawlessness.

If you are having problems believing that when local republican politicians tweet pictures depicting the first black president as an ape can be considered anti minority, then i dont know what else to tell you.

Because of the black community using the term “Chimpy Bush McHitler”.

Since you call a white President an ape, your shrieking only shows that you are racist hypocrites, nothing but pathetic scum and children who can’t be expected to act like decent civilized human being.

If you are having problems believing that when a party continuously categorizes blacks as “takers” and sites bogus statistics that claim 35% of blacks are welfare queens, then i don’t know what else to tell you.

Because we need only quote your worthless black leaders like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton who do nothing but push welfare and dependency and laziness.

Bottom line is this, liberals like me will always be against your anti middle class policies. Your concern should be why conservative blacks and hispanics are against your party as well. And if your answer is most of them are takers and race hustlers, then i wish your party the best of luck

i_am_liberal on March 29, 2014 at 6:47 PM

Conservative minorities are not, as examples like Raffi Williams, Dr. Ben Carson, Condi Rice, JC Watts, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Nikki Haley, Bobby Jindal, Mia Love and Tim Scott show.

These are the people who you and your so-called “conservative” friends demonize, call race traitors and oreos, attack and attempt to destroy in every way, and threaten their lives and families.

Therefore, we know full well you and your “friends” are not, nor have you ever been, conservative. You are lazy, worthless welfare mooches, racists who think others should pay your bills for you.

You are trash, boy.

Are we discussing the same 2000 General Election where – prior to the polls closing in the predominantly REPUBLICAN Florida Panhandle region – the major networks erroneously called Florida for Gore?

__________________________________________________________________

NBC was the first to jump the gun and declare that Al Gore would be the winner of Florida. They did this with 11 minutes still left on the clock, as voters were still on their way to the voting centers in the Western Panhandle (in the central time zone). As always on election night, the other networks frenetically jumped on-board as quickly as possible.

Within minutes the message was out – Florida was decided! Al Gore was the winner!Along with Florida, the networks also quickly declared that Gore would take Michigan and Pennsylvania, thus winning the “Trifecta” and sticking a dagger in the heart of Bush’s campaign. At this point there were still several hours left on the clock for voters in Western America. They were now being sent a very powerful message, that Gore was running away with the election.

Anyone who was standing in line by 7:00 pm would have been allowed to vote. But why would they even bother at this point? There was no longer any reason to vote for our next President. It was too late. The decision had been made. Gore won Florida and was going to be the next President of the United States. The networks said so.

The early projection might have cost Bush quite a lot of votes. The Florida “Panhandle” tends to vote 2 to 1 in favor of Republicans. There were at least 500,000 registered voters in these precincts. There are also many military personnel who vote on their way home from work.

Remember this?

“Al Gore wins the state of Florida and its 25 electoral votes. It gives him the first big-state momentum of the evening.” – Peter Jennings of ABC

I’m sorry, tell me again why blacks should have special voting privileges? You want county or city employees to work on Sunday just so you can vote after church? If voting on certain days is good for everyone else why shouldn’t it be good for blacks?

If you are having problems believing that when local republican politicians tweet pictures depicting the first black president as an ape can be considered anti minority, then i dont know what else to tell you.

Stop finding isolated instances of idiots. Show me the GOP policies that are racist and “anti-minority”.

If you are having problems believing that when a party continuously categorizes blacks as “takers” and sites bogus statistics that claim 35% of blacks are welfare queens, then i don’t know what else to tell you.

As a percentage there are more blacks receiving assistance than whites. However, there are more whites receiving it. There are plenty of white “welfare queens”. I don’t discriminate when it comes to stealing from the taxpayer. There are valid needs for help of course, but scamming the taxpayer isn’t one. The fraud and abuse is rampant.

Bottom line is this, liberals like me will always be against your anti middle class policies. Your concern should be why conservative blacks and hispanics are against your party as well. And if your answer is most of them are takers and race hustlers, then i wish your party the best of luck

I hate to say it but claiming that it’s a hardship on blacks, Hispanics or others to come up with ID’s for voting when they have to come up with them all the time for the simplest of things like cashing a check, buying a pack of cigarettes or a can of beer or whatever is basically racist!
Is it not the same concept that we are accused of?
If we claim that the various groups are inferior or incompetent for any reason are we not called racists? Than why is it different when liberals claim its a hardship for their various voter groups to come up with ID’s? That’s the same as calling them incompetent, not as smart as others who come up with ids easily or in essence liberals are being racist against their own voter groups!!

I want to know why black people are incapable of getting ID.

I hear this over and over from urban effete and her ilk. I can only conclude it must be a racial characteristic, because there are many more poor white folk than there are black folk, yet apparently poor whites have no difficulty obtaining proper ID. Even when poor whites have to take a bus to the DMV where the state issues them a free state ID, I guess blacks are somehow barred from doing the same.

I wish I knew who was preventing them- why won’t one of our lefties explain that?

Old people are another group that I’m told have problems, yet I have never met an old person (I probably qualify as old and I know quite a few OFs) who never held a job, never drove a car, never bought a house, never got credit, never went to school, never went in the military, never qualified for Medicare or got a Social Security check.

Of all demographic groups, us oldsters are probably the most documented bunch in America.

Yet urban tells me we can’t get a photo ID?
