Video: Juan Williams, Raffi Williams on diversity of thought

posted at 1:16 pm on March 29, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Daily Caller founder Tucker Carlson hosted an interesting tête-à-tête this morning on Fox between a staunch conservative and a well-known liberal on the lack of tolerance for diversity of thought demonstrated again this week, this time by a senior editor for Ebony Magazine. The two squared off — or actually supported one another as son and father, respectively and respectfully. RNC deputy press secretary Raffi Williams joined his father Juan Williams to blast the pervasive notions that ideology has to be linked to ethnicity, and Juan urged everyone to open their minds to new ideas rather than dismiss people out of hand:

It’s not just in minority communities where the conversation needs to open up, and not just on ethnicity where identity politics and closed-mindedness prevail. Juan mentions Condoleezza Rice and the cancellation of her speech at Rutgers. So far, the University of Minnesota is resisting a similar call to cancel a speech by Rice because of her work in the Bush administration — but that’s not stopping the calls to close UM’s doors to her:

Student and faculty activists are joining forces to pressure the University of Minnesota to rescind a speaking invitation to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is scheduled to deliver an April 17 lecture at Northrop Auditorium.

Rice, who also was national security adviser under President George W. Bush, was invited months ago to deliver a speech on civil rights as part of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs’ “Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series.”

But the University Senate has scheduled a vote next week on a resolution urging the school to disinvite Rice because of her role in the wartime policies of the Bush administration.

Another of the critics’ objections: her speaking fee of $150,000.

Andrea Cournoyer, a spokeswoman for the Humphrey School, rejected the notion of disinviting anyone. “Rescinding any kind of invitation would be inconsistent with our goal of promoting discussion and dialogue,” she said. The Humphrey School, in announcing the lecture, described Rice as “one of the most influential and powerful people in the world.”

Every speaker of this caliber runs six figures, so that’s a bit of a red herring. The issue is that the students and faculty don’t want to hear heterodox views on foreign policy and politics. Why not just stage a parallel event on the campus — and the UM campus in the Twin Cities is one of the largest in the country — as a counterpoint to Rice’s appearance? That way students and faculty can choose which speech to attend and make up their own minds about Rice’s views.  That would be true choice, free speech, and tolerance.

Kudos to the Humphrey Center, which consistently invites speakers from many different political viewpoints to speak and discuss issues. Let’s hope that cooler heads and broader minds prevail.

“Significant”. Neat.

Hey, remember when you believed extremely small numbers were significant?

So you’re saying 30,000 gun deaths and injuries is not significant? Your math adds a new dimension to your usual pedantry.

So now you get your chance to establish an actual position, urban elitist. Are thousandths of one percent something to be concerned with or not?

Did a 300 mile turn around today to work on the shed, but had to come back to take care of the pets. Up at 0400 tomorrow and will have another 300 mile turn around to finish the work. Good thing is that I will have brought back the three skis.

Every leftist puts diversity in a box defined by them. They don’t actually want to spend time with anyone different from them, especially the poor.

If you are having problems believing that laws that prevent blacks from voting on Sunday after church (something we have always been doing) is anti minority, then i don’t know what else to tell you.

If you are having problems believing that when local republican politicians tweet pictures depicting the first black president as an ape can be considered anti minority, then i dont know what else to tell you.

If you are having problems believing that when a party continuously categorizes blacks as “takers” and sites bogus statistics that claim 35% of blacks are welfare queens, then i don’t know what else to tell you.

Bottom line is this, liberals like me will always be against your anti middle class policies. Your concern should be why conservative blacks and hispanics are against your party as well. And if your answer is most of them are takers and race hustlers, then i wish your party the best of luck

i_am_liberal on March 29, 2014 at 6:47 PM

Oh, bullshit!

White or black, you’re an idiot, a tool and a liar.

Hell. I don’t even believe you’re black. Probably some punk-ass white college boy making up stories.

Pelosi, most of the progressive minority on the Supreme Court…Nothing against old white guys — I’m becoming one myself at a too-rapid clip. But I’m happy to join a club with a more diverse membership.

urban effetist on March 29, 2014 at 6:37 PM

What about Old White Women in your Party?

Dianne Feinstein = 80

Barbara Boxer = 73

Nancy Pelosi = 73

And Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren will both be almost 70 shortly.

You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets $200,000 per speech.

Former Bill Clinton SOS Maddy Albright still gets $100,000 per speech

So that puts Condi in the average range.

I have read three columns of posts here and the two leftists have YET to explain why their Democratic party does not allow Diversity of thought. They claim on and on how the GOP is racist and they are not. Yet the evidence here shows how the leftists cannot tolerate diversity on opinion and they call even people of color horrible names just because of their opinion. I never call these people “Liberal” because they are not, they only have Liberal leanings when it comes to voting and abortion. Just call them leftists that only believe in one opinion. Just ask them about religious liberty and they will freak out, I have yet seen one leftist tolerate Christianity post here or anywhere else on the conservative sites. They really freak out just hearing the name “Jesus Christ”, and when they do they fight to close that name off and welcome mohamaned with open arms.

PS…care to share with us what your background is? As in education, job training, that sort of thing?

Oh, and where you live would also be helpful. Are you in Pennsylvania, where O’bama increased his share of the high school dropout vote to 82% in 2012, while at the same time losing the college graduate vote?

Also tell us why your Democrat Party has abandoned college degree voters in favor of uneducated ones.

Juan Williams would make a fantastic night anchor for the Liberian Nightly News.

Make that dream come true.

Murphy9 on March 30, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Since 35% of us are on food stamps, perhaps you all are justified in calling us takers and welfare queens. Don’t worry though, we will surely change our ways and start voting for your party mmkay…

I have a relative who is a small business owner and a strong tea partier. Tea Party to the core when it comes to fiscal issues. Black like me and cannot stand Obama for anything. I asked him why he voted twice for Obama knowing he cannot stand any of his fiscal policies. Answer- The republicans are anti minority. I will rather vote for a politician who i can’t stand on the fiscal side than a politician who hates me for the color of my skin.

I talk to other blacks like me who tend to be very conservative fiscally on why they aren’t republicans and the answer is always the same. The republican party is filled with racists.

Now whether you believe me or not is the least of my problems. Just wanted to convey why i believe what i believe.

i_am_liberal on March 29, 2014 at 6:26 PM

You complain about stereotyping with the large number on public assistance, then you turn around with the highly stereotyped/bigoted comment about “The Republican Party is filled with racists”.

Percentage of mixed race families by political breakdown:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/volokh-conspiracy/wp/2014/01/31/msnbc-flap-new-evidence-on-the-political-views-of-mixed-race-adopted-and-step-families/

In case the link does not work, the difference is: nothing. (My own family is, BTW, one of those Republican mixed-race families.)

Part of the reason that I have been posting so vigorously on this thread is the fact that I despise bigotry. And the “Republicans are nothing but a bunch of racists” bit is straight-up political bigotry. I don’t like bigotry from any direction, it is just that I just see so much of it on the left. And the bigotry on the left is SOOO sanctimonious that it gets under my skin even more.

SubmarineDoc on March 30, 2014 at 1:09 AM

Irony alert: These statements were actually posted by the same bigot in the same post:

I’m not saying his (Herman Cain’s) support wasn’t real. I’m saying it was stupid.

and

How come Republicans won’t vote for black candidates?

urban elitist on March 29, 2014 at 6:02 PM

Do the names Rep Alan West (Lt Col, US Army, Ret), Mia Love, and Senator Tim Scott (who was for a time the ONLY African American Senator) ring any bells? All of them are beloved by the Tea Party. We are happy to vote for someone of African descent, we just won’t vote for an incompetent socialist – of ANY skin color.

I feel so sorry for these folks. In a generation, there won’t be any racism, and the victim class won’t know what to do with themselves. Maybe then they’ll get jobs?

John the Libertarian on March 30, 2014 at 2:53 AM

Getting back to semi-reality, could one of our Tolerant Democrats tell us why the Press was not allowed to accompany the First Lady to China?

If Laura Bush (who killed a high school classmate decades before she took the Bush surname according to her Low-IQ Democrat Detractors) had taken a similar trip and done the same thing, Zsa Zsa Huffington would have called for her to be marched out back and shot.

By the way – I did notice your concern for “vote suppression”. Democrats have a history of suppressing the vote of minorities that they don’t like – an incident that I have personal experience with. During the 2000 election campaign, I was on military temporary duty in Panama City, FL. I could not vote in my home state. Very conveniently for the administration, there was a service-wide shortage of the forms that were needed for requesting absentee ballots. No work-arounds (photocopied forms, etc) were allowed. (Fortunately, the vote that I was not able to cast would not have made a difference, because Gore lost in Virginia.)

One of the sleaziest moves that the Gore campaign did in the post-election period was their concerted effort to invalidate overseas/military absentee ballots, for trivial administrative errors.

A lot of military minority ballots were thrown out (or were never able to be cast in the first place – due to the “inexplicable” shortage of forms). The services are not just manned by white folks, you know….

The sheer FACT that more than two-thirds of states have laws on the books REQUIRING a person to have photo ID on their persons just to WALK DOWN THE STREET blows away ANY claim of supposed racism inherent in Voter ID laws.

What the libs are actually saying is that they feel Black people are simply too “simple” to know how to get – and use – a valid identification.

That is the sum total of ANY racism in Voter ID laws – and it comes from the Left, with their “keep ‘em dumb and voting for us” plantation.
