Video: Obama meets Pope Francis, talks for 50 minutes; Update: Vatican says abortion, religious freedom issues raised; Update: Curious omission on income inequality

posted at 9:21 am on March 27, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

As expected, the first meeting between Pope Francis and President Barack Obama went as scripted — at least in public, and with one exception. A gift from Francis fell over, making a loud crash and frustrating Vatican officials that finally shrugged it off. The private meeting appeared to go well, with both men smiling as they exited the room and met the two delegations:

The private meeting between Pope Francis and Barack Obama lasted almost an hour:

The two were scheduled to meet for just half an hour, but their private discussion lasted 52 minutes. Obama seemed buoyed by the meeting as they emerged and the pope greeted a handful of Obama’s senior advisers. Obama’s Catholic secretary of state, John Kerry, pronounced himself “a great admirer of everything you’ve been doing, as a Catholic, for the church.”

The president and pope both appeared tense at the start of the audience, when they initially greeted one another, but then were all smiles by the end of the meeting and seemed to have found a rapport, though they spoke through interpreters.

They exchanged gifts, with the pope offering Obama two medallions and a copy of his apostolic exhortation “The Joy of the Gospel,” in which he denounced the global economic system that excludes the poor.

“You know, I actually will probably read this when I’m in the Oval Office, when I am deeply frustrated and I am sure it will give me strength and will calm me down,” Obama said.

Obama’s gift-giving skills have improved — or perhaps he’s hired more competent advisers in his Office of Protocol. No iPods of his speeches were given this time, but instead a gift with some thought put into it:

The president also presented the pope with a custom-made seed chest featuring a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds used in the White House Garden. The chest is made from American leather and wood from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“These, I think, are carrots,” Obama said, holding a pouch. “Each one has a different seed in it. The box is made from timber from the first cathedral to open in the United States in Baltimore.”

We’ll know more when we get the readout from the State Department and from the Vatican. The longer time usually means a pleasant conversation, although it could also mean that the debate on issues might have been more intense that usual, too. Neither side stands to gain from emphasizing negatives, so expect both to issue warm and congratulatory statements that emphasizes the agenda for each. The Pope will have to have raised the issues of abortion and the HHS contraception mandate to express solidarity with American bishops, while Obama will no doubt emphasize their commonality on poverty and income inequality.

The real story will come out later. Pay attention to reporters like John Thavis and John Allen at the Boston Globe for the fly-on-the-wall-once-removed perspectives down the road.

Update: The first readout of the meeting comes from the Vatican, which makes it sound as though Obama didn’t get much of a pass:

This morning, 27 March 2014, the Hon. Barack H. Obama, President of the United States of America, was received in audience by His Holiness Pope Francis, after which he met with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

During the cordial meetings, views were exchanged on some current international themes and it was hoped that, in areas of conflict, there would be respect for humanitarian and international law and a negotiated solution between the parties involved.

In the context of bilateral relations and cooperation between Church and State, there was a discussion on questions of particular relevance for the Church in that country, such as the exercise of the rights to religious freedom, life and conscientious objection, as well as the issue of immigration reform. Finally, the common commitment to the eradication of trafficking of human persons in the world was stated.

Interestingly, there is no mention of poverty and income inequality from the Vatican. That seems like a significant omission, especially considering Pope Francis’ focus in that area.

Update: Karl’s tweet sums it up for Obama:

They mean the The One ‘pontificated’ for 52 minutes, which seemed like an ‘eternity’ to the Pope. The One has promised the Pope a dvd of his ‘sermon’, accompanied by a personally signed, glossy photo of The One blessing all the Democrats present…

Yes, maybe the meeting went longer than planned because Obama was explaining how abortion is totally cool within the tenets of “my Muslim faith” (which, by the way, has a call to prayer which I consider the most beautiful sound on earth — not like those awful Catholic hymns).

I see the headline is not supported by the text. I was all ready to jump on the idea that they met for 52 minutes and Obama talked for 50 minutes of that. But, that’s not what the post says, at all. Dagnabit.

So, they tore out parts of the cathedral to make this box? That actually seems about right for 0bama’s bunch………

RandallinHerndon on March 27, 2014 at 9:45 AM

I wish the Pope didn’t look so….I don’t know…..cozy with Obama. Yeah, I know, he has to present a good front for diplomacy and all, but with this guy, of all people?? Couldn’t the Pope have shown a little public disapproval for a man that thinks it’s ok to put live babies in a room and let them die?

Obama’s comment about all the protocol is so typical too. Yes, Obama, the successor of Peter, who was chosen directly by Jesus Christ himself, will have some pomp and circumstance. We Catholics call it respect.

I will leave it at that, because in the big scheme of things, was this really his idea.

I imagine that Pope Francis asked the first question of the President, and in typical Obama fashion, he ran the clock out on the answer.

Actually, no. Francis has asked all of us to cool it on the life, religious liberty, marriage, etc.

The Pope should have asked the Dog Eater at what point the seeds become alive after planting.

bimmcorp on March 27, 2014 at 10:11 AM

Of course there is no mention of income inequality.

It is dumb for Obama to equate his ideas on inequality to those of Francis. When Francis talks about a wealth gap he is talking about the gap between first world countries and the third world. He’s referring to absolute slums, the likes of which we have no concept of in this country. He is NOT talking about the “income gap” in the United States – because poor people in this country still live better than almost anyone on earth.

I would have to think that behind closed doors Francis would make that distinction to Obama.

It probably had more seeds than that in it…Native US seeds maybe a mix of veggies and flowers that are rotated in the WH gardens?

It’s a big improvement from the state gifts he gave his first time around.

Wood from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a nice touch.

The last time Obama met the Pope, Benedict XVI didn’t hesitate to bring up abortion in the US…Obama was probably pretty uncomfortable cause he promised to lower the numbers….

I guess we’ll see soon what they talked about.

Matthew 5:43-48 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Dear God, give us the strength to follow your example.

As to ‘income inequality,’ they covered it, all right. They discussed immigration reform. That should just about do it for most of working people.

Pope Francis = Universalist/Unitarian wet dream.

When the pope is extremely popular with the left, that should raise some major red flags.

I am reminded of our priests and bishops… Every single one of them is pro-life…

The vast majority, however, are pro-statist redistributionists first.

So, they tore out parts of the cathedral to make this box? That actually seems about right for 0bama’s bunch………

GWB on March 27, 2014 at 9:44 AM

No it was reclaimed wood from the Cathedral when they were doing renovations I believe. It was actually a very nice touch. And I actually liked the seed idea. Castel Gandolfo has a working farm and a garden so it is like planting something from the White House at Castel Gandolfo. It is nice symbolism about the relationship, etc.

And apparently everyone was on their best behavior. The Vatican even put up the American flag in the courtyard. But Obama had a ridiculous cheesy smile in the pictures I saw. He looked incredibly out of place.

Illinidiva on March 27, 2014 at 12:09 PM

The private meeting appeared to go well, with both men smiling as they exited the room…

Maybe they shared a couple of chuckles over the American right painting both of them as Marxists.
Rush Limbaugh has got to be petrified of what this meeting could bring.

obamas seeds have fallen on rocky ground. He is heartless for the innocent and he keeps the poor people right where he wants them, on the plantation and safely voting for any jackass with a D after their name. obama needs Jesus but would Obama bow to Jesus like he has bowed to others. He hasn’t yet for only look no further to his fruit. Does he serve God or himself when he does the things he does. He hates this country and many of us that reside under his rule. But he does not know who he will bow and beg one day and it will be too late. Off to the goat pen and maybe even a millstone will be waiting.

One could argue that the Catholic Church and our Federal government are very similar to Mafia. All three ask for “tribute” and give very little in return.

Yeah. Francis probably thinks lots of people exploiting the poor for profit legally are headed to Hell as well.

Roselle on March 27, 2014 at 10:58 AM

I don’t personally like Kerry, but perhaps we should do this thing where we judge the level of people’s Catholicism. I have many personal issues with the Catholic Church and have met many people who consider themselves pious Catholics who I don’t think were modelling Christian kindness or tolerance. Additionally, the social Gospel is just as important to the Church as sexual morality. Francis apparently did bring up immigration reform, so conservative Catholics who are against that are out of step with the Church’s teachings.

Illinidiva on March 27, 2014 at 12:20 PM

Obama is lucky the Pope didn’t have a nun come in and whack him across the knuckles with a ruler.

myiq2xu on March 27, 2014 at 12:31 PM

One could, but that would sound fairly ignorant.

Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) is the national office for Catholic Charities agencies nationwide. Catholic Charities USA’s members provide help and create hope for millions of people a year, regardless of their religious, social, or economic background. CCUSA provides leadership and support for the work of local agencies in their efforts to reduce poverty, support families, and empower communities.

Roy Rogers on March 27, 2014 at 12:23 PM

You are correct, I was probably too harsh on the Catholic Church, they do many wonderful things. My comment really relates to the fact they depend on the goodness of those who actually create economic activity, build things, produce goods and valuable services.
