Gun-control California legislator busted by FBI for arms trafficking

posted at 10:01 am on March 27, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The ironies in this case are just delicious. California state senator Leland Yee, along with fellow Democrats, pushed SB 374, which would have banned Californians from owning semi-automatic firearms of all types, a law which Governor Jerry Brown had to veto. According to the FBI, Yee needed a lot of money after his losing mayoral bid in San Francisco, and turned to another career — arms trafficking with organized crime. However, Yee ended up trying to cut his deal with a government informant — and now faces federal charges on both arms trafficking and corruption:

A California state senator who advocated gun control legislation asked for campaign donations in exchange for introducing an undercover FBI agent to an arms trafficker and told him how to get shoulder-fired automatic weapons and missiles from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines, according to court documents unsealed Wednesday.

The allegations against state Sen. Leland Yee were outlined in an FBI affidavit in support of a criminal complaint. The affidavit accuses Yee of conspiracy to deal firearms without a license and to illegally import firearms. He was arrested Wednesday and appeared later in federal court, where bail was set at $500,000. …

Yee is also accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and cash payments to provide introductions, help a client get a contract and influence legislation. He or members of his campaign staff accepted at least $42,800 in cash or campaign contributions from undercover FBI agents in exchange for carrying out the agents’ specific requests, the court documents allege.

Yee discussed helping the agent get weapons worth $500,000 to $2.5 million, including shoulder-fired automatic weapons and missiles, and took him through the entire process of acquiring them from a Muslim separatist group in the Philippines to bringing them to the United States, according to the affidavit by FBI Special Agent Emmanuel V. Pascua.

Just how much did Yee push gun control in California? He’s one of the gun-control lobby’s staunchest figures in the legislature, which has gun-rights advocates bitterly amused at Yee’s hypocrisy now:

The round-up by the FBI includes 25 other accused in the conspiracy, some with gangland ties:

The affidavit names Yee and 25 others, including Raymond Chow, a onetime gang leader with ties to San Francisco’s Chinatown known as “Shrimp Boy,” and Keith Jackson, Yee’s campaign aide. Jackson is accused of multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Chow and Yee were arrested Wednesday during a series of raids in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to court documents, Yee performed “official acts” in exchange for donations from undercover FBI agents, as he sought to dig himself out of a $70,000 debt incurred during a failed San Francisco mayoral bid.

Yee is also accused of accepting $10,000 in January 2013 from an undercover FBI agent in exchange for making a call to the California Department of Public Health in support of a contract was considering.

The agent who discussed arms with Yee presented himself as a member of Ghee Kung Tong, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s Chinatown that Chow reportedly headed. It was among the sites searched Wednesday.

The interesting twist on this, politically speaking, will be how Democrats in the California state senate handle Yee. So far, they have resisted calls to expel a Democratic member convicted of eight counts of corruption in attempting to preserve their supermajority and avoid having to work with Republicans on legislation. If they refuse to eject Yee — and they probably will — California Republicans will have a field day in the 2014 elections discussing Democratic corruption and power-greed. It’s not going to be an especially good year for Democrats anyway, and protecting Yee won’t improve matters.

As long as the progressive “feels” a certain way–then there is no reason to conflate their actions, with their positions. Liberalism is a position based upon emotions, not upon consistency nor rationality. The rational person would think that a guy who is politically for gun control would certainly also abide by that same position in other life contexts. Well, that simply ain’t the case now is it?

This case highlights a point that those on the national socialist left doesn’t want to acknowledge.

This it the myth that gun grabbers hate guns – THEY DON’T – they just hate that guns are in the hands of private citizens to which they disagree politically.

Make no mistake – they LOVE guns in their hands and those of their body guards and their militarized policed departments

They just don’t like them in the hand of those they deem to be unworthy of freedom.

Truth be told, they don’t really seem to care about guns in the hands of the private criminal element – because if they did, they would take steps to do something about it.

But it’s tough enforcing laws against the lawless, so they don’t bother.

And consider that were the gun grabbers to find a genie who could grant them one wish, it would not be instantly taking guns from Criminals. Because were that to happen, crime would be drastically reduced and all their bleating about ‘gun violence’ would evaporate because gun violence would also disappear.

No, they want the innocent to be deprived of their Commonsense Civil Right of Armed Self-Defense because defenseless people empower those on the national socialist left, and it’s a lot easier to implement Che Guevara’s ‘pedagogy of the wall’ when the people can’t shoot back.

Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested Wednesday on public corruption charges, with the FBI alleging he took tens of thousands of dollars in bribes – including $20,000 in cash delivered in a briefcase last month to the mayor’s office where he also solicited $1 million more.

Cannon was the longest-serving elected official in Charlotte, having joined the city council in 1993. He is the region’s highest-ranking official to be charged in a corruption case since former N.C. House speaker Jim Black of Matthews, also a Democrat, pleaded guilty in 2007.

No, it’s not been a good year for California Senate Democrats…and we’re only three months into the year. In addition to the reference to the convicted (voter fraud and perjury) Senator that they are resisting calls to expel, and the hypercritical and corrupt Yee, Democrat Senator Ron Calderon was indicted on fraud, bribery, and political corruption in February.

The Democrats in California’s Senate hold a 2 seat super-majority – which is critical as they need a super-majority to approve any additional taxes or increases on existing taxes. If they expel the convicted / indicted, they lose their super-majority. That is not palatable to them, so they are doing everything they can to avoid it.

Unfortunately, in CA, there are so many LIV and committed progressive fascists in LA and the Bay Area, they will not care if the people they elect are either stupid, corrupt, criminal, or all of that…as long as they promise them ‘free stuff’, ‘social justice’, ‘income equality’, and ‘higher wages’ from the government.

This rash of corruption will wake some up – but I don’t know if it will be enough to fundamentally change the direction of California.

Yes, that coincides with my earlier point – that those on the national socialist left see the issue of ‘people control’ as a way of disarming their political enemies.

This is easily illustrated if you ask a gun grabber proponent about the problem of guns in the possession of the government.

Those guns can also be:
1. Stolen by criminals
2. Used by the government to commit ‘gun violence’

But that doesn’t seem to be a concern with them – and the question will remain unanswered.

The Indictment Against Leland Yee Puts “The Wire’s” Clay Davis to Shame
If you thought the charges against Leland Yee would be bad, you had no idea. As in, he offered to set up an arms deal with Islamic rebels for $2 million in cash. As in, he has ties to a gangster named Shrimp Boy.
You can read the whole affidavit here, but it’s really, really long, so we’ve gone ahead and pulled out the highlights.

Yee told an FBI agent to give him a shopping list of guns

Yee could arrange from some serious firepower: “[The agent] asked about shoulder fired automatic weapons. Senator Yee responded by saying the automatic weapons are the equivalent to the “M16″ Automatic Service Weapon [...] [The agent] asked about the availability of shoulder fire missiles or rockets. Senator Yee responded ‘I told him about the rockets and things like that.’”

Yee masterminded a complex scheme to import illegal weapons

Yee had connection with Filipino rebel groups: “Keith Jackson advised that Senator Yee had an unidentified Filipino associate who was supplying ‘heavy’ weapons to rebel groups in the Philippines.”

Including Muslim terrorists: “According to Senator Yee, Mindanao was largely population by Muslim rebel groups who were fighting the federal government. Yee continued by saying the Muslim rebels had no problem ‘kidnapping individuals, killing individuals, and extorting them for ransom.”

This is akin to a family-values Republican being caught with his mistress. I wonder if the left will circle the wagons or push him out? Nah, just kidding. They’ll circle the wagons.

Occams Stubble on March 27, 2014 at 10:06 AM

Actually this is far worse. A family values proponent being an adulterer is rank hypocrisy. Yee is not only a hypocrite, but an alleged criminal.

I’d say it’s more akin to the family-values Republican being caught with a little boy. The mistress isn’t illegal, but shoulder fired missiles are.

Perfect example of tyrant scum.

This is why the Second Amendment STILL has value, meaning, and always will.

There will ALWAYS be those that attempt to use power, control, and influence over their perceived “subjects”. An armed citizenry will always have their say, unarmed citizens will be slaves.

Think I’ll take a drive to Yee’s district with a load of “Guns for Yee, but not for thee” t-shirts for sale. Might be able to drum up enough interest to sell 5 or 6, the guy’s district is San Francisco. If any of us thinks this will make any change in the way the people’s republic of Kalifornia does business in the legislature, we should read this:
http://www.sacbee.com/2014/02/27/6195891/senate-democrats-block-republican.html
There wasn’t a need to block his expulsion, Wright’s district is solidly blue, even a special election to replace an 8-time felon would have resulted in electing a lefty. They’ll block any expulsion of Yee, too, and he’s from San Francisco, what chance does anyone but a dyed in the wool socialist have of being elected there?

When It Rains, It Pours: Office of New York Democratic Assemblyman Raided By Feds In Corruption Probe…
Since he’s black I’m assuming it’s only a matter of time before he blames racism.

Via Times-Union:

The Democrat said FBI agents questioned him this morning at an Albany hotel where he was staying. He said they implied there would be indictments. The investigation appears to focus on Scarborough’s travel vouchers.

Plane ‘false alarm’ off Gran Canaria
Breaking news

Reports that an aircraft had crashed into the sea off Spain’s island of Gran Canaria are a “false alarm”, Spanish officials say.

Spanish media reported that a crash had occurred two miles off the island and that rescue services were heading to the scene.

But Spain’s airports association AENA said that a boat had been mistaken for a plane.

California Republicans will have a field day in the 2014 elections discussing Democratic corruption and power-greed.

You are so naive. This will not make a lick of difference to California “voters”. There is not a snowball’s chance in he!! that the overwhelming majority of California nutballs would ever pull the lever for a Republican. This is just another story on Hot Gas to get the out-of-California base riled up. Kalifornia is a lost cause.

NOMOBO on March 27, 2014 at 11:48 AM

Precisely the reason why the 2nd Amendment needs to be vigilantly defended and vigorously expanded….if the Government is going to conspire with criminals and organized crime to import dangerously powerful weapons that gangs will use on the citizenry of this nation then we need all the personal protection we can get.

Criminals don’t care about the law which is a tautological statement that only liberals can’t seem to understand. I stand with the NRA on this issue (even though I’m not a member) – the only thing that stops these dirtbags with guns is us good guys with guns….

Quite correct. As a native Californian, I wisely fled to Texas about 4 years back. There is not a chance in hell of me ever returning for any reason either.
