On cue: Obama administration extends healthcare deadline for people who started enrolling before March 31st everyone

posted at 9:31 pm on March 25, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

We all knew this one was coming, right? Administration officials can stand around and talk about how the March 31st deadline is the real deal until they’re blue in the face, but you know they’ve been watching the pace at which Healthcare.gov signups have been trickling in like hawks — and while they’ve been conspicuously backing away from their erstwhile goal of 7 million enrollments in the opening phase, this would seem to suggest that the pace still isn’t running as quickly as they’d like it to be. From the Washington Post:

The Obama administration has decided to give extra time to Americans who say that they are unable to enroll in health-care plans through the federal insurance marketplace by the March 31 deadline.

Federal officials confirmed Tuesday evening that all consumers who have begun to apply for coverage on HealthCare.gov, but who do not finish by Monday, will have until about mid-April to ask for an extension.

Under the new rules, people will be able to qualify for an extension by checking a blue box on HealthCare.gov to indicate that they tried to enroll before the deadline. This method will rely on an honor system; the government will not try to determine whether the person is telling the truth. …

Administration officials said the accommodation is an attempt to prepare for a possible surge of people trying to sign up in the final days before the deadline. Such a flood could leave some people unable to get through the system.

An “honor system.” Glorious.

I think their aim is to keep just enough senate seats to prevent overriding a presidential veto, then start blaming the republicans for not “fixing healthcare” and then begin arguing for single payer since it can’t be “fixed” due to those darned Republicans.

Doc Holliday on March 25, 2014 at 10:22 PM

I believe that there aren’t enough seats in play to end up with the number of votes needed to override Zero’s veto. And then we have to consider that the GOP isn’t all that cohesive, although, if things get really bad maybe a number of Donks will finally see the light and cross over. Yeah, right.

Until of course they decide to declare you lied. I once got stuck paying $75k to the government because I was accused of lying to a fed, even though not one shred of evidence was given to support the accusation. The mere accusation itself was enough to warrant the 75k penalty.

The majority of Americans have once again soundly REJECTED this Socialist ‘Big Government’ destructive, intrusive Health Care Law…to the point where the administration had no option but to admit that Obamacare can NOT survive due to not enough people for it to do so NOT signing up.

They had no option but to violate the Constitution one big last time, modifying the law once more by by-passing Congress AGAIN to do so,keeping enrollment open in hopes that more Americans will sign up.

Like every failure or crime throughout his administration over time, there is no accountability…and Constitutional violations are as easy for Obama to do as gettting up in the morning.

love2rumba on March 26, 2014 at 8:24 AM

Avik Roy @ Forbes
Unlike some of the clearly illegal extensions and delays that the White House has put forth, this one appears to be legal; the text of the Affordable Care Act doesn’t specify how long the open enrollment period should be, leaving that task to the regulators at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Maybe if KS and our fearless leader, the Master of Disaster, keep extending the deadline for enrollment, our liberal fascist government will find enough dead people and convicts to get this program funded.

Every delay should be followed by the House passing a bill authorizing the delay by repealing Obamacare. I know they have already tried repealing Obycare some 40+ times but these should have been specific.

The only reason for the arbitrary deadlines anyway was for tax revenues.

Getting to some magic “enrollment” number is pointless. Obamacare is perpetually in need of new young enrollees as the present enrollees age. Also they must make up for those who stop payment (which should be interesting since most 28 year olds i know will most likely lose jobs, move, get bored and just stop paying) Are we to have a perpetual campaign to get people to enroll? This is just basically stupid.

For all the hundreds of millions spent on dishonest anti-obamacare advertising, still the only thing that has slowed the cbo projected signups was the unforced error of the website not working for the first month.

Think about that. Hundreds of millions spent on obamacare attack ads, and they haven’t done a thing to slow the projected signups. Pretty stunning, really.

Of course, the fact that the right is actually spending all this money trying to scare people out of buying medical insurance is digustingly immoral in its own right. The fact that every single one of these scare ads has been exposed as a blatant lie raises that immorality to a mindblowing level.

Spending hundreds of millions of dollars lying to people to scare them into putting their lives at risk. Hell is too good for these people.

If you’d put the 17 million, and growing, spent on advertising for something that should sell itself, if it were so good, you could treat a lot of the people who didn’t, and still don’t, have healthcare. Alas, obama’care’ is NOT about healthcare.

Right, it’s working exactly as designed… millions of people were booted off their insurance, as planned.

Tons of people put on Medicaid, to cost money, as planned.

Fewer now paying for insurance than before it was implemented, as planned, and fewer young people than the insurance company require in the mix as planned.

Next year we’ll see huge premium increase as planned with tens of millions still uninsured as planned.

It’s ALL going as planned. It’ll cost a ton more than the original estimate, boost premiums significantly, and drain taxpayer dollars… all as planned.

Weird that none of this was part of what they claimed the original plan was, but it’s all as planned.

everdiso on March 26, 2014 at 11:16 AM

More correctly, it is about health insurance. Healthcare was available to everyone. Medicare, medicaid, insured and uninsured americans AND Illegals all received “healthcare” in the past. Not everyone got gold-plated super-premium healthcare, but free clinics and myriad other programs covered a lot. Yes, there are plenty of hardship cases, but if you haven’t noticed by now, life is unfair. Lots of people have fundraisers in their communities for people who have trouble paying some of their medical bills and lots of doctors and hospitals write off unpaid bills.

There is no “control” gained by those who can now afford insurance (through the sweat of someone else’s labor) because the challenge of getting healthcare is now about access to it. Free health insurance is sure great if you can find a doctor left in your area!

Not sure to whom you are directing your comment here. You do understand the system was intended to fail straight out of the gate in order to promote a Single Payer system, correct?

Ah yes, the internet braggadocio of “living off your own efforts”. Every poster here is apparently an ubertough alpha male cowboy who created his own business from scratch. At least when they’re behind the anonymity of a keyboard. You guys are adorable.

The ‘next level’ above and beyond being “behind the anonymity of a keyboard” is as ugly as it gets.

You’re not advocating for that, are you ?

Not one second thought considering and appreciating that you happened to be born under the greatest government the world has ever seen, with what was the greatest social and economic infrastructure that ever was, which provided you with the security, health, education, opportunity, and customer base to get where you are today.

I’m just waiting for the government to take over distribution of WATER! I just paid $540 to have a pipe that had frozen and burst in my wall replaced. Isn’t having water a right guaranteed in the Constitution? I should not have to pay a plumber that kind of money for repairs of my plumbing. Now I also have a big hole to repair. Those damn corporate overlords are getting rich off of me!

Yep, Trayvon Martin and Rachel Jeantel created the world we live in today. It was all just a bunch of Obama welfare addicts who built the United States into the great power that it is.

A bunch of loud angry spoiled children with zero comprehension or appreciation of the silver spoon that every american is born with, running around acting tough, hiding behind guns, and hating on your government – with no knowledge or understanding of how it feels to actually live in a place where there is no effective government, where your life is under constant threat and there are few opportunities for escape.

You are like a bunch of bratty suburban teenage bullies complaining about your parents.

Sad, but funny, too.

So if we DO appreciate the benefits of being born in America and we HAVE made the most of our opportunities we should be glad to have the government confiscate the fruits of our labor to use for its own purposes?

Guess what- I already pay taxes and volunteer and I RECYCLE!

2L8 on March 26, 2014 at 12:10 PM

Oh here we go – this is where the nutters convince themselves that saying “stupid black child” is not racist, and then blame all their problems on the evil media.

everdiso on March 26, 2014 at 11:58 AM

LMAO.

You and your fellow racists screamed and screamed and screamed that Barack Obama’s skin color made him a super-genius and that anyone who criticized him for any reason was a racist.

Turns out Barack Obama is a stupid black child. That’s no surprise; conservatives, not being blinded by skin color, recognized his incompetence, his ignorance, and his utter lack of any achievements whatsoever knew that from the start.

It was just racist liberals like yourself, everdiso, who ranted and cried that black skin made up for all Obama’s failings.

Furthermore, liar boy, we know that you only scream “racist” to get what you want. Indeed, your stupid black child Obama and the entire Congressional Racist Caucus screams that their having to pay taxes is racist.

Of course.

That is because the “question” is nothing but the delusion of a sick and perverted liberal racist who has already admitted he does nothing but lie for Obama.

Perhaps you can explain why your stupid black child lied to the American public.

Oh, that’s right — you’re so mentally deluded and deranged that you can’t even admit that Obama lied. Indeed, you support Obama lying so that you can get welfare. That shows how depraved and evil “progressives” like you are, that you support and endorse lying so that you can defraud others.

There would have at least been some truth to that.

Facts, my friend.

everdiso on March 26, 2014 at 12:15 PM

Lies.

One, we know the stupid black child and all of his supporters lie and repeatedly lie to push Obamacare.

Two, because Sebelius and the stupid black child Obama screamed and cried that they have no way of knowing how many people lost their insurance, how many people signed up, any type of quantifiable metric — which means it is impossible for them to know how many people are insured or uninsured in the first place.

You see, everdiso, we know that you are an incoherent and stupid racist who has to treat every word that comes out of the stupid black child’s lying mouth as gospel. That’s why you make a fool of yourself trying to quote a statistic that is based on data that your own stupid black child Obama and his Sebelius have insisted they cannot collect, report, or quantify.

Bmore, i actually do wish that the ACA was just a trojan horse for a single payer system. Unfortunately its not. Its simply a messy compromise, that was the best they could get passed to achieve the only important goal – getting more people insured.

Actually, that “junk insurance” had lower premiums, copays, and deductibles than the vast and overwhelming majority of Obamacare plans.

Which means it was better and more affordable coverage.

Looks like the stupid black child and his idiot everdiso screwed up again. But what would you expect from a stupid black child who was so ignorant of insurance that he lied about his own mother’s coverage?
