Democrat McCaskill: I’d say it’s pretty irresponsible of us to ignore our $17 trillion debt

posted at 8:41 pm on March 19, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

Le sigh. Granted, there are a lot of things — actually, most of the things — in this short monologue of Sen. McCaskill’s with which I take issue. That Europe is still struggling because they chose “austerity,” while the United States’ relatively (relatively!) good unemployment rate is because we chose stimulus? Er… no. Much of Europe is and will continue to struggle because they went through years and years of building up gigantically unsustainable welfare states, pension systems, and total deficits and they are still operating under high taxes, prohibitive regulations, and financial rules that the plague of the euro only exacerbates. That ObamaCare is helping to slow the pace of healthcare cost increases? Yeah, no — healthcare costs were slowing down well before ObamaCare, and all signs point to healthcare costs picking back up again in the next few years. That we have increased our deficit by “a lot”? …Whoop de doo.

But the general sentiment here — that our deficits and national debt are a really, really serious and urgent problem and that we really shouldn’t be blithely glossing over that fact — is one to which I really wish the rest of the Democratic caucus would more thoroughly own up. Instead of, you know, whaling on Republicans for supposedly hating poor, hungry children at even the smallest suggestion of a budget cut, and attacking Republicans’ irresponsibility at every debt-ceiling juncture.

I do believe a $17 trillion debt is irresponsible. I do believe that. … It’s not like I am such a fiscal hawk that I don’t see that there are needs out there that we need to address. Supporting extending unemployment insurance, all of those things. … I don’t think we can keep our eye completely off that ball. So, some of the people who think, well, you know, deficits don’t matter, and debt doesn’t matter. We have cut our deficit by a lot, and that’s great, but I don’t think it’s responsible to go back to the old way, ’cause you know what the old way was? We said yes to everybody. You know, we want to be loved. That’s why we run for office. … We have ourselves doing things that federal government was never intended to do. I mean, we weren’t supposed to be behind municipal firetrucks in the federal government. We’re doing that now. That’s not the way our Constitution was designed. We weren’t supposed to have the federal government paying for education. We are not doing a lot of that. … I do think we have to be careful about making the federal government the answer for everything, because it’s going to put us in a position where we’re not a first-tier nation anymore if we get swallowed up by the debt.

‘Austerity’ in Europe means jacking up taxes, and increasing spending a little less than the most profligate want.

The kindest thing that can be said about McCaskill is that she is a stupid liar.

M240H on March 19, 2014 at 8:54 PM

Like nearly all career politicians, the only time you’ll hear ANYTHING resembling fiscal responsibility from a DimocRat (or from the GOPe for that matter) is leading up to an election.

The rest of the time, they’re ONLY interested in running up the debt. That’s all they care about.

If people aren’t smart enough to see through her lies, and don’t know this by now, given the Dim’s ridiculous display of gluttonous spending the last 5 years, we are truly doomed.

Meople on March 19, 2014 at 8:54 PM

I mean, we weren’t supposed to be behind municipal firetrucks in the federal government. We’re doing that now. That’s not the way our Constitution was designed. We weren’t supposed to have the federal government paying for education.

Not healthcare, either. Idiot. If insurance companies could sell their products across state lines, we’d be doing a lot better with really affordable healthcare, and the Fed wouldn’t have to get in the way, where they shouldn’t be. The Constitution enumerates the powers of the Federal govt.; everything else belongs to the states. Including healthcare, education, and welfare … to name a few.

McCaskill is not up fro re-election until 2018.

McCaskill(D) defeated Todd Akin (R) in 2012 54.7% to 39.2%, so we got stuck with her for another 6 year term.

Let’s hope our country makes better decisions in the 2014 elections!

Democrats took control of the House and Senate on 1/3/2007, and have held majority control (2+ of the House, Senate, and Presidency) ever since.

Look at what has happened to the national debt since Democrats took majority control on 1/3/2007:

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/debt/search?startMonth=01&startDay=03&startYear=2007&endMonth=03&endDay=19&endYear=2014

Total Public Debt Outstanding is up 102% (Total Debt has MORE THAN DOUBLED since Democrats took majority control).

Debt Held by the Public is up 156% (debt held by the public is now more than 2.5 times what it was when Democrats took majority control).

Of course, that all sounds nice of her to say, but when it comes time to vote, she’ll be voting to give more “free” stuff away.

The ONLY reason why McCaskill is still a senator is because Todd Aiken was an idiot and stepped in it. Until he made his gaffe, she was losing by double digits.

Yes, Todd Aikin made a gaffe and lost the election.

But the real reason we are stuck with Sen. McCaskill is because there are so many Low Information Voters who think being able to abort babies is the most important issue in their little world. More important than having a strong economy or a strong foreign policy.

Until these Low Information Voters wake up, we are going to keep electing morons to “represent us”.

wren on March 19, 2014 at 9:27 PM

We have cut our deficit by a lot

It is a MYTH that Democrat majorities have cut the deficit.

The deficit now is MULTIPLE times what it was when the Democrats took majority control!

What was the deficit (as a % of GDP) that Harry Reid and his peers (including then-Senators Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Claire McCaskill, etc. and then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi) inherited when they took majority control of both houses on 1/3/2007?

1.1% of GDP.

What was the Fiscal Year deficit (as a % of GDP) in the first Pelosi-Reid Fiscal Year (FY 2008)?

3.1% of GDP.
(Pelosi & Reid nearly tripled the deficit in their first Fiscal Year.)

What was the deficit (as a % of GDP) in the second Pelosi-Reid Fiscal Year (FY 2009)?

9.8% of GDP.
(Pelosi & Reid more than tripled the deficit in their second Fiscal Year!)

Data Source:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/budget/fy2015/assets/hist01z2.xls

The baseline for deficit comparison should not be 1/20/2009 (when Barack Obama became President), the baseline for deficit comparison should be 1/3/2007 (when the Democrats, including Barack Obama, took majority control of the House, Senate, and overall budgeting and appropriations process.)

1/3/2007-1/20/2009:
Barack H. Obama was part of the MAJORITY.
George W. Bush was part of the MINORITY.

Don’t let Democrats and the MSM get away with blaming the MINORITY for the actions of the MAJORITY 1/3/2007-1/20/2009!

Democrats are majority responsible for the skyrocketing deficits of FY 2008 & 2009, increasing the deficit nearly 800% in just two years, and even cutting that in half since then is still well more than TRIPLE the deficit they inherited!

ITguy on March 19, 2014 at 9:27 PM

Funny how Senator McCaskill wasn’t concerned with our national debt when she voted for the nearly $1 trillion stimulus plan. I recall writing her office prior to her vote asking her to consider who would have to pay for all this debt: her grandchildren and ours. Her staff replied with one of those gratuitous emails thanking me for my concern… Now that the dominoes are beginning to fall, she is trying to position herself to avoid responsibility for her actions.

Having it laid out as human sacrifice (plain, simple, pagan, human sacrifice) is new to me. I’ve understood it as brutal and exclusive — only a Muslim is a properly human, human being, and killing others is therefore not akin to murder; ref. Nazis and Pariahs and some slavery systems –

But this is a different light. It strips the whole veneer of war and war crime away, and the veneer of that false religious parity between the “big three monotheistic religions,” and all that’s left on the table are people that might just as easily be praying to Molech or a volcano.

This is a pretty tough one, RWM. :) I’m glad you posted it.

Poor Sen. MacCaskill, standing alone in the well of the Senate to filibuster increases to the National Debt time and time again, a lonely figure valiantly fighting….

What’s that?

You mean she hasn’t fought against the ever increasing debt?

Why it is almost as if she is flat out lying and expecting people to buy a lie told to their faces as she is part and parcel of the ignoring of the increasing National Debt and has done NOTHING to stop it. And she, a Senator, in the most august body of collegial groupies led by Chief Ferret Reid. I’m sure she could have gotten an extra, special exemption to go to the well of the Senate and filibuster increasing National Debt limits and use the power of her office to stop them. Sad, all that power and she can’t be bothered to actually use it to good ends.

ajacksonian on March 20, 2014 at 6:37 AM

Dems are responsible for the $17T

Repubs are responsible for the $17T

Those who miss Bush also miss the government bailing out banks and car companies with our tax dollars (and our future tax dollars), the government taking over education (No Child Left Behind), inviting more illegals in by his talk of amnesty (requiring more of our tax dollars to fight the problem of intruders across our borders), spending hundreds of billions on a war we couldn’t win (or weren’t resolved to win).

And the chief Republican in a Republican-dominated House pushes through a clean debt ceiling increase!!!

Is Obama bad? You bet. Are the Dems bad? You bet.
Are the Repubs any better? You bet they aren’t!

Guys, guys, guysssssss…

Sigh.

The debt was bad when Bush was in office, especially in 2007 and 2008, when we gained control of congress and ran it up ourselves. Man, that was sooooo bad and sooooo Bush’s fault. (Also, when we all voted for TARP, that was Bush’s fault, but not bad beyond that, at that point…only later.) Then, Barack the Magnificent took office, and debt no longer mattered. Why? The evil Bush was gone! So we ran up a big tab and laughed at everyone who said it was a problem. But, see, it’s gonna be a huge problem again because Republicans are about to win back the Senate, and we need a way over the next couple years not only to complain about the debt, but also to oppose Republican efforts to reduce spending. That way, we can make Hillary look like the fiscal hawk when the gods of politics make her POTUS in 2016!

brentspolemics on March 20, 2014 at 9:15 AM

Democrat McCaskill: I’d say it’s pretty irresponsible of us to ignore our $17 trillion debt

Is it possible to impose the death penalty on people like that who voted for every cent of it?

cajunpatriot on March 20, 2014 at 9:31 AM

The second I saw it was Claire McCaskill, I knew to expect this quote to be completely misleading. We did a stimulus, passed an expensive and confusing new entitlement, and raised taxes a little. The Europeans increased spending a little, kept all welfare systems in place, and raised taxes a lot. Huge difference.

So, based on this clip, Sen. McCaskill thinks it’s “irresponsible” to ignore the $17T-and-growing debt, and “fiscal hawk” she is, her prescriptions to get our economy growing again and start working on the debt are to increase the minimum wage, close loopholes, and “doing other PROGRAMS that are supporting the middle class.”

She sucks, but this is a brilliant strategy. Democrats like her are selling socialism-lite by making it look like severe fiscal restraint.

The Bringer on March 20, 2014 at 9:38 AM

If she wants to be loved she should lose some weight and have an affair, and leave us out of her world. Seriously, is she now of a mind that we shouldn’t expect the govt to take care of everything and everyone from cradle to grave. Too bad she isn’t a few billion in debt herself so she would know how the rest of we the people feel about being sunk at 17T. She needs to stop talking cuz my head is spinning.
