Sarah Palin to launch “Rogue TV”

posted at 6:01 pm on March 14, 2014 by Allahpundit

“Think of it as a video version of her Facebook page,” says a source who spoke to Capital NY. I’m intrigued by the new platform she’s going to use:

The channel will be available through Tapp, the digital video service founded by former CNN chief Jon Klein and former NBC Universal entertainment executive Jeff Gaspin. Subscriptions will cost $10 per month…

Palin’s channel will feature video commentaries from the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, discussing current events and political issues…

That said, Rogue is also expected to feature footage of Palin and her family in Alaska, much as the 2010 TLC reality series, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” did. (TLC’s parent company, Discovery Communications, is an investor in Tapp.)

It will also have advice and guidance from Palin, such as tips for parents and recipes. There are also tentative plans to have subscribers engage in regular video chats with Palin.

Here’s the Tapp website, although you’ll learn more by watching the clip below than by clicking the link. They’re lining up celebrities to partner with, but not just any celebrities; they want people known for having “super-fans” who hang on their every word, as one of the founders puts it. If you’re going to launch an expensive professional video platform and charge 10 bucks a month for each channel (more than Netflix and Hulu, do note), you need to be very sure upfront that there’s a loyal consumer base of thousands out there who’ll pay to watch. Tapp’s offering a virtual TV studio out of the box; in return, they want celebrities who can offer a devoted audience out of the box. That’s why they approached Palin. And that’s why you’re not going to see “The John McCain Channel” anytime soon.

My question is, how much of each channel’s content will be shot professionally, in studios and/or with pro equipment, and how much will be shot by the celeb himself on cell-phone video a la YouTube? Probably there’ll be a mix — a video version of a Facebook page will presumably include some less formal “posts” — but the two guys who founded the site are former bigwigs at NBC and CNN, so there will assuredly be professional quality to some of it. Maybe even all of it, depending on what they have in mind. That’s why I say it sounds intriguing.

Either way, as amateur cameras get better and video becomes cheaper to produce, eventually every celebrity will have their own professional-looking channel somewhere online, just like nearly all of them have Twitter accounts now. Palin’s ahead of the curve.

Palin’s channel will feature video commentaries from the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, discussing current events and political issues…

This could be good. At first I thought this was just going to be a non-political thing where she shared recipes and inspirational advice.

I hope she does entertaining, political advocacy-type videos similar to what Malkin did when HotAir was new and hot.

22044 on March 14, 2014 at 6:17 PM

Has anybody heard from Palin on this rumor?

She may actually do this, but I’m getting more of the vibe of folks using her name to get some press- she’s the “type of personality we would want?”

Reminds me of some of those appearances, speeches etc. where people would “announce” Palin was coming, then she’d announce no, she wasn’t…

She might do this. But it’s early to speculate on whether this would be a good thing, what her motivation may be, etc. before someone in her camp confirms it.

Just my take.

cs89 on March 14, 2014 at 6:18 PM

What many people, especially Governor Palin’s critics, doesn’t realize is that Palin is the first 21st-centuy American politician. She is breaking ground and setting the precedent for how politicians will run in the future.

Let’s recap:

- Palin resigns from office, goes into refuge to Facebook and Twitter. Gets mocked by the ruling-class and elites. Result? All politicians have Facebook platforms and sends out Tweets.

- Palin has her daughter do “Dancing with the Stars,” thus making the Palin family more humanized and in-step with average folks.

- Palin does her reality show on TLC.

- Now she has her own private video channel.

With the TV channel, she completely bypasses the state-controlled media and renders them irrelevant. She’s in control of all her appearances, and there’s no leftist media to edit it or take her speeches out of context.

Brian in Titletown on March 14, 2014 at 6:18 PM

She is not going to run for any office.

1. that would expose her to campaign opposition research and exposure
2. She’s making too much money drop everything and allow chance to step in.

Will doing Rogue TV prevent her from running in 2016? It’s up to her, but it never stopped Huckabee, and she’s a far better caliber of candidate.

You’re welcome!

As for this Rogue TV idea…if (and I say if, because as others have pointed out, Sarah herself has not made an announcement regarding this thing) she does go through with this, I am having a bit of trouble seeing any downsides to this. To those who think she might be “preaching to the choir,” consider this: Rush Limbaugh rarely, and I mean RARELY, makes television appearances; and yet, his message still manages to get out. Sarah still has her Facebook page, where she can post snippets of her programs or quotes if necessary to keep the facts straight.

And she can have whoever she wants on the show, and ask them the questions she thinks should be asked. Imagine her putting Paul Ryan on the spot re: amnesty.

The more I think about this, the more stoked I get. I sure hope she does it.

KingGold on March 14, 2014 at 6:43 PM

And I’m sure it’s a legitimate consideration to raise. The difference is, Sarah is a different breed of cat. She has, for starters, massive name recognition. Her book sales (especially for her first book) were through the roof. Her live appearances draw huge crowds. Ten bucks a month is not too much to pop for something like this.

You’re entitled to your opinion, of course, but Reagan was an actor whose start in politics began while he was a spokesman for General Electric.

Didn’t Andrew Breitbart say that politics is downstream from culture? This is an opportunity to spread conservatism to a larger audience. Things are never static…Palin may grown in appeal, and have a huge audience by late 2015. After having been exposed to her on a regular basis, people may have made up their minds more favorably toward her, particularly low info voters who have never really been exposed to the real Sarah. This could be a platform for a run in 2016.

Or it could crash and burn, like KingGold says. It’s a risk, but I think it’s worth it, just to get conservative ideas more exposure. It’s like Rush Limbaugh’s “Rush Revere” book series. It’s a light piercing the darkness.
