Ramirez on Attkisson’s departure

posted at 5:11 pm on March 14, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Via Twitchy, which notes that the “C” that Sharyl Attkisson carries out of CBS News stands for “credibility.” Most of us feel the same way, although Jan Crawford does good work as well. Michael Ramirez offers a clear vision of the circumstances of her departure:

ramirez-attkisson

Normally, one would expect a national news-media outlet to value reporters who fearlessly hold the powerful accountable, and not just in administrations run by Republicans. The long struggle for Attkisson at what once was the gold standard of television reporting reflects just how far CBS News has fallen, and how painfully obvious their agenda has become.

Attkisson tried to quit a year ago, but stayed after CBS brass promised to do better, Howard Kurtz reported yesterday:

But people familiar with the situation say that Attkisson actually attempted to resign one year ago, even starting to clean out her desk in the Washington bureau.

CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager talked her out of leaving last March, promising that some of the issues she had raised would be addressed.

Based on these assurances, Attkisson returned to work full time and dropped efforts to terminate her contract.

But the differences proved irreconcilable in an atmosphere that has also drawn complaints from some other reporters and producers. While Fager, a veteran newsman who is also executive producer of “60 Minutes,” commands considerable respect in the news division, there is concern among some of the rank and file about the difficulty of getting management to approve tough stories.

The C could have remained for craven, it appears.

Update: I can’t believe I forgot to link to Ramirez’ original. My apologies for the oversight; it’s corrected above.

Also, be sure to check out Ramirez’ terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives fascinating look at political history. Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here. And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

In my opinion the finest editorial cartoonist in the biz.

Ramirez is very good, but CBS hasn’t had any widespread credibility since Rathergate, and obviously had a severe leftist bias since forever.

sauldalinsky on March 14, 2014 at 5:19 PM

The first time I heard of Attkisson was when Rush mentioned a fair article coming from CBS news a few years ago. Obviously CBS couldn’t abide by THAT.

Will 60 minutes do a hit piece on her?

His work is here. Ed usually links to it I think. Looks like he saw this one on tweety. Below the cartoon on the page I linked is a previous button. Look back through a few. If you want full size click the image.

When does she start at Fox?

Except that Attkisson was the only reporter at the network who did see. Or has a clue.

In fact, “CBS” once stood for “Columbia Broadcasting System” but years ago simply became a logo with no meaning. So that “C” stands for nothing, but we already knew that.

CNN hired Jake Tapper.
So they’ve got their token non-liberal; she won’t end up there.

Priceless cartoon.

CBS is also known as See BS.

I’m really hoping CNN picks her up. She would greatly complement Jake Tapper.

itsnotaboutme on March 14, 2014 at 5:34 PM

To be fair, CNN fired Soledad O’Brien, Roland Martin, and now Piers Morgan. If they’re serious about regaining their centrist credibility, she would be an excellent hire. Don’t forget she went after the Bush administration just as forcefully as she has Obama. If I was a politician in power, I’d fear her.

CBS will never change backing the left. The only thing one can do is limit watching them.If they were looking at bankruptcy the democrats in congress would give them a bailout and they know it.

Sorry for the slow response. Had to take leave for a few. Yes, he comes up with the concept based on trending news items. Then creates the visual which best suits the concept. His work is grand. Generally works large for the originals, 30 x 40 inches and larger. He mixes various techniques to achieve his desired results. I dream of one day owning an original. It is in the works.

Well, “most of us” may feel that Attkisson does good work, but I don’t believe the same applies to Jan Crawford. She is a clownish liberal whose bias has been increasingly evident in her work.

I think it’s funny you young pups do not recall that

From 1990 to 1993, Attkisson was an anchor for CNN.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on March 15, 2014 at 12:10 AM

I permanently quit getting any of my news from CBS when the network let Dan Rather make the statement to the effect that even though they used manufactured information for 60 Minutes, he still stood by the story. They did not fire him, so I fired them.

‘News’ on CBS is at best ‘based on fact’, with some artistic license thrown in for dramatic effect. Like your typical TV movie docudrama, but you shouldn’t believe that the details you see presented are factual.

sauldalinsky on March 14, 2014 at 5:19 PM

Respectfully disagree. For those of us who served in Viet-Nam, both SeeBS and Walter Krapkite flushed any vestige of credibility into the cesspit with their anti-American Marxist propaganda by the mid-1960′s. In the 1990′s, former high-ranking military officers credited the American media and American anti-war protesters with being one of the major factors in a North Viet-Namese victory.
