Charlie Rangel: The explosion today in Harlem is “our community’s 9/11″

posted at 2:01 pm on March 12, 2014 by Allahpundit

To paraphrase about a thousand different people on Twitter who heard this and shuddered: If you’re an American, especially an American from New York, “your” 9/11 was 9/11.

Still, a terrible tragedy. Two people are dead from the blast, more than a dozen are wounded, and many others are unaccounted for as I write this. Per the Times, the local power company got a report of a heavy gas odor near the building at 9:13 a.m. Crews were dispatched within two minutes, but not soon enough: The explosion occurred at around 9:30, before they got there. One resident said she smelled gas last night but that the smell gradually disappeared. Evidently it was building up somewhere in the building, waiting to catch a spark.

0n 09.11.01, 234 African-Americans, including 12 NYC firefighters, died at the WTC, the Pentagon, and on Flight 93.

09.11.01 was America’s, including the African-American community’s, 9/11.

While today’s explosion is certainly a tragedy, according to numbers gathered by the group Right of Way, almost 300 New Yorkers were killed in traffic incidents alone in 2013.

At least he didn’t say it is “our community’s Holocaust”.

Maybe he is not totally stupid. Or maybe he just overlooked that possible comparison. He compared the war in Iraq to the Holocaust in the past, but he took a lot of flack on that occasion, so I guess this time he thought he would try to offend a less clearly identifiable group of people. Americans.

What a moron.

It’s corrupt politicians like him that made Harlem what it is today. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out Rangel is the slum-lord who owns that building and hasn’t declared his rental income for it.

Good job on letting your neighbors die. What a burden a 1 minute phone call would have been to the gas company.

Same person would probably say “Well I heard someone screaming for help around 1:30am, but it stopped after about 20 seconds so I went back to bed”.

Wow.

A few weeks ago I casually mentioned to the meter reader that every once in a while when I went to get the mail, I caught a whiff of gas at the end of my driveway. I asked if this was normal? He said he would call it in. Within 15 minutes there was a crew out checking the lines, within 30 minutes the water company was out marking their lines and by 9 the next morning there was a crew out doing stuff. No more whiffs.

So thousands killed?

Now how many buildings were leveled that was the equivalent of the WTC buildings that went down? I’d say at least 20 or 30 ought to do it.

And a blast raising dust that can be seen from orbit. That would be part of it, no?

NYC shut down because of it, right? All the bridges and tunnels closed?

A massive crater, at least, covering a few square blocks?

Maybe Harlem is being swallowed by a giant sinkhole?

Heck, maybe it is caused by the nearby raising of R’lyeh? Now that would be worse than 9/11! With non-euclidian geometry taking over… oh, wait, this is Harlem we’re talking about… no one would notice the difference… sorry…

“Our community”

Having lived in NY during 9/11, I can say with total certainty that EVERYONE in the NYC/LI/CT/NJ area considered themselves part of the SAME community because the tragedy affected people throughout the Tri-State area. No town or “community” was exempt from the loss of life.

It goes without saying Rangel is an idiot.

Pelosi Schmelosi on March 12, 2014 at 3:28 PM

This explosion was far less serious in terms of loss of life, than the similar explosion of a building 200 yards from City Hall in 1970, also caused by a gas leak that killed a dozen people (this is not to be confused with the building explosion 10 months earlier that wasn’t caused by a gas leak, but by Bill Ayers and his merry band of bomb-makers).

sadatoni on March 12, 2014 at 3:18 PM

I’ll go one step further. Why in the hell does a building blowing up in NYC, while unfortunate, get treated differently than a building that blows up somewhere else? Why does lane closures on the GW bridge become a national “scandal” but a 100 car pile up in the Midwest gets barely a mention.

The media is focused on NYC and they view anything that happens in that miserable hell hole more important than a similar story elsewhere in the world. Two deaths and a score of injuries are bad but are not even close to other horrific accidents since 9/11/01.
