Funny or die: Obama pitches ObamaCare to Zach Galifianakis; Update: Goal achieved

posted at 11:21 am on March 11, 2014 by Allahpundit

A rare presidential foray into “cringe humor.” If it were anyone else I’d assume this was done under duress, knowing that young adults aren’t signing up on the exchanges at the rate needed for a healthy risk pool. He’s got just three weeks to grab their attention and get them interested before the enrollment deadline passes (unless it’s extended by kingly proclamation, of course). If mugging with Galifianakis for five minutes in a sure-to-be-viral vid boosts the number of twentysomethings who surf over to Healthcare.gov, oh well.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Still, I doubt anyone had to twist his arm. Spock-ish though he is, it must pain him that the cultural electricity of Hopenchange circa 2008 has shorted out as much as it has. No one respects him abroad anymore and his biggest moves domestically lately are sporadic ad hoc “tweaks” to undo O-Care rules that he himself signed into law. It’s only natural that a man going through hard times would want to recapture the excitement of youth. Here’s one way to bring a little currency back.

But there appears to be no place that Mr. Obama is unwilling to go in his search for young people, which the image makers of his predecessors have noticed.

“We have to worry about the dignity of the presidency,” said Mike McCurry, who served as Mr. Clinton’s press secretary in the 1990s. “There’s a limit to how much you can do.” Still, he said, “the shifts in the popular culture and the way people are entertained and get information almost mandate new strategies.”

Nicolle Wallace, who was Mr. Bush’s communications director, said she suspects there are some lines that even Mr. Pfeiffer and his current team will not cross.

“You can’t put a president on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians,’” she said, perhaps hopefully.

We’ll see about that.

Galifianakis is a natural choice for this role, by the way. He and the rest of the “Hangover” gang cut an impromptu campaign ad for Obama in 2012. Galifianakis himself has said of the left’s Emmanuel Goldstein, the Koch brothers, that “It’s not freedom what they are doing,” whatever that means. Sonny Bunch is disappointed that comedy in the age of Obama seems to have moved from challenging the powerful and telling uncomfortable truths to acting as emcee during a presidential insurance seminar, but don’t worry. Things will be back to normal once a Republican’s back in the White House.

As for the clip itself, let’s put it this way: It’s funnier than any of “The Hangover” movies. Make of that what you will.

Update: There is a method to this madness:

Yup, I’m out of touch. Who the he!! is Zach Galifianakis?!

He plays the creepy man-child character in {insert movie name here}.

In all honesty he must have a lot in common with our man-child President.

Bmore: in re your “problem” last night, here’s an exchange I had with WordPress today:

“He is not”

-2 for typo.

You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.

Was this a long enough interval?

What’s with WordPress lately??
They never had a problem with successive posts before.

Duplicate comment detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!

No, I added 4 sentences to the comment you originally objected to.
What kind of comparison program is WordPress running???

We have lots of commenters who quickly add to or expand on or correct prior posts; is WP going to start burping at all of those?

(It actually did post the “interval” exchange while I was writing the next installment, see thread above, but this is kind of confusing. Is anyone else having problems like this? Clearly a programming glitch in WP, maybe related to the time-travelling comments problem. Maybe in combo with some of the security software on my browser?)

Like lambs to the slaughter. Poor fools don’t even know what they’re signing up for.

He Who Some Call A Traitor on March 11, 2014 at 1:37 PM

It’s funny that Health Care Tara knows in real time that FunnyorDie is the number 1 source of referrals but we have to wait months to find out how many people have actually paid for insurance and will probably never learn how many of those people sho di sign up were previously uninsured.

Now, why is that?

MTF on March 11, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Ok, I thought that was funny. It won’t make a damn bit of difference as far as people signing up (myself included), but it was funny.

WhatSlushfund on March 11, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Lots and lots of people think this is funny, that’s fine. Yuk it up. I think it’s just another face palm for the presidency. The big question will be, how many young folks are going to head on over to the health care exchanges and sign up? They’ll laugh, and they’ll share it, and they’ll tweet it and then forget all about what the purpose of it was. If they even realized what it was in the first place.

scalleywag on March 11, 2014 at 1:43 PM

And it was bipartisan lame. It would be lame if Bush had done it, or Pelosi, or McConnel, or Reid, or especially McCain…lame, lame, lame.

scalleywag on March 11, 2014 at 1:50 PM

Remember, the polling that revealed voters’ complaints about Romney included variants on “yeah, he could fix the economy, but he isn’t very friendly” — which may strike us as a woefully inverted priority, but is a viewpoint that decides elections.

Marcus on March 11, 2014 at 2:16 PM

this was not only bad, not funny, but it was embarrassingly bad. Oh, well, he is not the leader of the free world any longer, so what the heck. And, who believes that there us a rush to sign up as a result of this disaster?

Techster64 on March 11, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Another reason why the world does not respect Obama….

He is supposed to be the leader of the most powerful nation in the free world…and he has lowered himself to be a ‘pitch-man’ on a b-grade ‘show’ to promote Obamacare – as if it were a brand of Shampoo rather than a LAW. Actually, he as pretty much lowered himself to BEGGING Americans to OBEY A LAW and sign up for Obamacare.

I can’t remember any LAW this unpopular before….I can’t remember the government having to spend this much to promote a LAW before…I can’t remember any President ever debasing himself to the point of begging Americans to obey a law before.

And how much hard-earned tax dollars was spent to put this POS on?

easyt65 on March 11, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Galifianakis also said “I f@cking hate Republicans”, so there’s that as well.

strictnein on March 11, 2014 at 2:25 PM

According to the news, the Obama administration has put adds on Facebook and YouTube, as well. SERIOUSLY? Can you SMELL the DESPARATION coming from Obama and his administration?

1 in 10 of the 6 million uninsured people Obama/Democrats targeted and justified passing Obamacare for has even begun looking at Obamacare. 4 Million Americans have reportedly signed up for Obamacare – all who had insurance, who were promised they could keep their insurance, and who then lost it because Obama lied. A reported 6 Million who were insured have lost their insurance, DOUBLING the number of people who NOW don’t have insurance.

Hundreds of millions of tax payer dollars to build a web site and build an infrastructure for a program that doesn’t work, which has cost Americans both their jobs and insurance…a program the majority of Americans did / does not want! Hundreds of millions of dollars advertising and begging Americans to obey the law…Now Millions of dollars now MISSING, a result of the corruption within the un-supervised implementation of this disasterous bill…

All blame to be laid at the feet – now and for all time – of Obama and the Democrats who engaged in non-representative government by ignoring the majority will of the people to prove they were smarter and knew better than the citizens whose voices they are supposted to represent.

easyt65 on March 11, 2014 at 2:29 PM

But we continue to put money in their pockets, don’t we? For instance, it continually baffles me to no end that ANY honest conservative would have HBO. How many cons give their hard earned $$ back to these cretins so they can insult us and work against us?

We whine about the culture being taken over, but what are we doing about it? Are we starving the beast? Hell no. We line up to fund it. Are we creating our own content? A wee, but that will take a long time, of which the liberals were very patient. Now they have a celebrity president and we are silly enough to help them.

I do not find funny the President of the United States, the leader of the most powerful nation in the free world, debasing himself on some grade-b cable show to BEG Americans, the majority of which have opposed Obamacare from the start, to obey the law. I find it pathetic.

Do you ever see Putin, GBR’s PM, Germany’s Leader, etc on tv begging their people to obey one of their laws? Hardly.

I find it pathetic that this man – after completely lying to the citizens of this nation about the socialist program he KNEW would not work (it won’t cost a dime, it will pay for itself, it will reduce the deficit, you can keep your plan/doctor you like, Americans will NOT lose their jobs/plans…) – would appear on such a show to grovel and beg Americans to obey a law that has been forced into law.

I find it fiscally irresponsible that not only was this law shoved down the throats of the majority of Americans who did/do opposes it, not only did 6 million Americans LOSE their health care and millions lost their jobs as a result of this law…

NOW Obama/Democrats are seizing and spending hundreds of millions of our tax dllars to advertise, promote, and beg Americans he $crew@d to save his Un-Constituional law by obeying the law and signing up…and begging Americans not to punish Democrats, the only ones who voted for it, for engaging in NON-REPRESENTATIVE government by ramming an un-wanted piece of legislation down our throats… to NOT punish them for doing so by voting them out of office as they deserve later this year…

A good way is to get them through the author’s website – Mark Steyn sells his own books and last time I was there he was offering to sign them. No middleman cut and the author gets all the $$.

It’s really hard to keep on top of which company does what because ultimately everything is owned by a dozen companies anyways it seems, but at least with entertainment there’s a face to keep in mind.

The outrage here over this brilliant piece of marketing is as hilarious as it is expected.

What degrades the presidency is walking ibto doors and having shoes thrown at you, not holding your own with the trendiest entertainers of the day.

What comes across most clearly is obama’s comfort level in his own skin, his ability not to take himself too serioysly, which positively reeks of honesty and genuine-ness.

Such a stark contrast to all the republican poseurs who are so ibviously faking it every step if the way – trying to project images if themselves and beliefs that even they ibviously don’t believe in.

This fakery is obvious a mile away, and is why none of these republican candidates has a hope of swaying left leaning voters, and why even slow-on-the-uptake conservatives like yoursekves end up turning on and eating each one of them when their facade slips for an instant.

Christie had a whiff of genuine character about about him, but that was exposed pretty quickly. Cruz has a whiff of it too but there’s a good chance its still all just a selfserving schtick even for him. And his views are too crazy to be taken seriously anyways.

You guys really don’t get it – the ability of the prez to engage this way only increases the credibilty of his office in the eyes of the younger generataion or two who rightly regard most politicians as simple frauds.

Ah well, continue with the outrage.

There is a method to this madness:

If it’s true that Funny or Die is the largest source of referrals… that’s seriously funny. I mean it’s incredibly pathetic and funny, do they understand what they’re patting themselves on the back for? First off I gotta believe the bar at this point is incredibly low, I mean most of the people trying to get on were at the beginning – so at this point they get a couple dozen and it’s like “Huzzah!” and then second… exactly how much have they blown on trying to get enrollment up at this point?

Ukiah on March 11, 2014 at 6:42 PM

Shameless or not, this is part of the future, like it or not. Social media, internet shows, Twitter, it’s all the new way of communicating, whether it’s hard information or just for yucks.

And all the sniping about it is not going to change it or stop it. Conservatives are going to have to get on the information highway or else they are going to be left out in the cold.

This is no different than when the printing press was invented and politicians (and anyone with an opinion) produced pamphlets. And when politicians first went on the radio to reach the public. And those taking advantage of early television.

This is just the next paradigm shift in communicative technologies and as much as I hate to admit it, the left has done a smashing good job of taking first advantage of it.

We shouldn’t be making fun of it, we should be standing in line to embrace it.
