FL-13 special election: Jolly wins!

posted at 8:51 pm on March 11, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

The results are in on the toss-up special election in an extra-swingy district widely characterized as a referendum on the popularity of ObamaCare as well as a bellwether for this November’s midterms, and… Boom.

Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink on Tuesday in a Tampa-area House district where President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul got its first test ahead of November’s midterm elections and Democrats and Republicans spent millions of dollars auditioning national strategies for the rest of the year.

With almost 100 percent of the vote counted, Jolly had 48.5 percent of the vote to Sink’s 46.7 percent. Libertarian Lucas Overby had 4.8 percent.

Sink conceded shortly before 8 p.m.

The implications of the dueling messages for the midterm elections inspired both parties to call in star advocates like President Bill Clinton and former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, in addition to blanketing the district with ads, calls and mailings. More than $11 million has been spent on the race, according to the Sunlight Foundation, a nonprofit group that tracks government information.

Those are some pretty crazy cash monies for a special election, with Sink’s campaign doing the lion’s share of the spending. I don’t want to overanalyze the implications here too hard for the midterm races dotted all over the country, and it did turn out to be a tight race, but… Democrats cannot be feeling good about this. They were really gunning for a victory here to help feed the pre-midterm national narrative that, Hey, ObamaCare’s not so terribly unpopular after all!, not to mention test out some more of their war-on-women-mongering. Sink was pretty stalwart about her general support for ObamaCare (“we can’t go back to letting insurance companies doing whatever they want; instead of repealing the law, we need to keep what’s right and fix what’s wrong”), and this does not seem to bode well for them.

Wait… what?

Is this something to be excited about?

Will this Jolly guy fight for limited government and conservative principles, or will he just be a rubber stamp for the Boehner/Cantor/McConnell agenda?

If he isn’t going to be a conservative, I am not going to chalk this up as a win

CoffeeLover on March 11, 2014 at 9:00 PM

Lots of things to keep in mind here. Jolly apparently was a flawed candidate who ran a lackluster campaign (GOP still incapable of running a decent campaign i guess). There was also a 3rd party spoiler and the Dems spents tons of money. And yet the Republican STILL won. Bad signs for the Dems..

In FL13, if best GOP does is win a close race in a seat they’ve held for 58yrs it doesn’t bode well for making ACA a signature issue.

— Brad Woodhouse (@woodhouseb) March 11, 2014

Obama won the district in both 2008 and 2012. In the gubernatorial race, Sink beat Scott in the district.

Now, back to the Spox of the DNC, Brad Woodhouse, and his regular agitprogramming.

Public Policy Polling surveys conducted last year suggest most Floridians support a path to legal citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Heberlein is part of a pro-immigration reform coalition that will target voters likely to support reform and try to turn them out on March 11

I hope they spend a fortune on promoting amnesty this election cycle.

David Jolly, Republican: “I think all of us are in favor of diversity, legal immigration,” he said at a forum. “The concern is, with illegal immigration, the cost of resources that are being expended on those who have broken the law.” Jolly added he would not support Sen. Marco Rubio’s immigration reform bill and wants to enforce the current laws, including holding accountable businesses that employ undocumented workers.

Is Jolly telling the truth or is he going to be one of Boehner’s bootlickers now?

In the 2010 “Governors” race, Sink cheated in the debate and got caught red handed. In spite of this fact, a few days later she out performed every Democrat on the ballot by at least 10 points, maybe 14 points[most of the state down ballots elections like agriculture won by nearly 15 points].

And in a congressional race with a “libertarian” in it she losses by 2 points, under performing the polls by a ton. I thought we had no chance in this race because women love their little Sink. This is a great sign for 2014. Make no mistake.

BuckeyeSam on March 11, 2014 at 9:17 PM

Will Obamacare be repealed or won’t it? Will Congress fund it or won’t it? Will the web site be fixed or not? Blah, blah, blah. We the people just need to do what we need to do and Democrats be damned. Resist. Refuse. Revolt. EXEMPT OURSELVES! We did not comply with Prohibition and we simply should not comply with Obamacare. For religious reasons. For privacy reasons. For the cause of liberty and freedom and in protest of the idea that the federal government (under one party rule, no less), can force private citizens to purchase anything with our own money. Are we citizens or subjects? Mice or (wo)men? Just say NO to socialism and to the corrupt, unionized, far left IRS: the gestapo of America’s political class. Afraid of arrest? not to worry! After all, the federal government ignores millions of illegals who are breaking U.S. immigration law every day. Our Founders pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. All we have to do is just say no to a scheme we all know is un-American and a violation of our most basic founding fundamentals of privacy, self reliance, limited government and individual freedom.
How To Opt Out Of Obamacare. Know your options and become savvy self-pay patients. Join a health care sharing ministry. These are voluntary, charitable membership organizations that agree to share medical bills among the membership. They function similar to insurance, and are probably the best alternative to conventional health insurance. There are four of them, at least that I know of. Three are open only to practicing Christians (Samaritan Ministries, Christian Healthcare Ministries, and Christian Care Ministry) while a fourth, Liberty HealthShare, is open to anyone who agrees with their ethical commitment to religious liberty. They operate entirely outside of Obamacare’s regulations, and typically offer benefits for about half the cost of similar health insurance. Members are also exempt from having to pay the tax for being uninsured. From the article by Sean Parnell http://thefederalist. com/2013/12/04/opt-obamacare/#.Up9MwGKiM_o.email

Sink went after Jolly for serving as a lobbyist for a group that wants to privatize Social Security,

But only this weekend, I was watching some hack Dem strategist lauding Obama for doubling the Dow Jones Industrial Average since taking office.

In other words, Dems think a rising stock market is awesome. They just don’t want regular folks benefiting from that rising market.

Just a sampling of headlines from the past week:

Slate: Welcome to Obamacare’s Ground Zero
MSNBC: FL special election tests midterm strategies for both parties
TIME: Florida Special Previews Democrats’ 2014 Play for Women
NYT: Florida Election a Crash Course for Midterm Races
HuffPo: Dems, GOP test fall strategy in Florida House race
CNN: National parties test their pitches in Florida’s 13th District special
PBS: Parties look to Florida special election for clues to November
Kaiser Healtchare: Florida Could Be Bellwether State For Obamacare Election Strategies

Of course, they’ll all be changing their tunes now that the icky Republican has won.

A lot of Democrat denial going on tonight. Anything to avoid the fact that Obamacare was the big issue in this campaign, and it cost the Democrats an Obama district.

I’m thinking it out like this.

It’s a long time til November!
It was a must win for the Donks.
Bunch of Noobs weren’t members for the last HumpBot.
It was enough to make Wasserman Schultz uncharacteristically rationalize about … well …

It’s a long time til November!

There are quite a few Republicans from more conservative districts that quickly became a reliable vote for the liberal establishment.
