Sharyl Attkisson resigns from CBS, partly due to “liberal bias”

posted at 3:21 pm on March 10, 2014 by Allahpundit

First Liz Wahl quits RT over Crimea, now this. It’s been a bad week for state TV.

Coincidentally, Alisyn Camerota announced today that she’s leaving Fox News after 16 years, leaving a vacancy in the 1 p.m. hour. (Seriously, though, I think that’s a coincidence.)

Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network’s liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network’s corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her packages on television.

At the same time, Attkisson’s own reporting on the Obama administration, which some staffers characterized as agenda-driven, had led network executives to doubt the impartiality of her reporting. She iscurrently at work on a book — tentatively titled “Stonewalled: One Reporter’s Fight for Truth in Obama’s Washington” — which addresses the challenges of reporting critically on the Obama administration…

But Attkisson had become a polarizing figure at the network, sources there said. While some championed her relentless dedication to investigations — ranging from defective Firestone Tires to the Fast and Furious gunwalking scandal — others saw evidence of a political agenda, particularly against President Obama. (The bulk of Attkisson’s work since 2009 has focused on the failures or perceived failures of the Obama administration, including the administration’s failed green energy investments and the attack in Benghazi, though she has reported on several Republican failures as well.)

Fast & Furious, Benghazi, Solyndra, the ObamaCare rollout — she’s spent the last five years digging into all of them. In a different world, she would have been promoted to “60 Minutes”; as it is, per Politico, she spent months negotiating an early end to her contract with CBS. The bit above about her being frustrated with liberal bias rings true, too. She’s been complaining about that, albeit in more oblique terms, for a long time now.

With the possible exception of Tapper, she’s the most respected major-network reporter working today among conservatives. It’s a fait accompli that her book will make a splash on the right. What then? Fox is the obvious choice, but if CNN decides to double down on hard news, maybe they’ll go after her. They’re planning to fill Piers Morgan’s 9 p.m. time slot at the end of the month with a rotating group of interim hosts, Tapper included. If a newsier hour is well received, maybe they’ll bring in more reporters like Attkisson — although Anderson Cooper’s show is already sorta hard news and he hasn’t ousted O’Reilly at 8. Maybe it’s time to be truly bold: “Sensible Reasonableness” at 9 p.m. with your co-hosts David Frum and Michael Smerconish. Take that, Megyn and Rachel.

By the way, did we ever find out who was behind that suspicious activity with her home computers? Attkisson had a suspicion about it last summer, but unless I missed something, that’s the last we heard.

Yes! Been asking about that since she tantalizingly said she knew how did it, and then went silent. Either the Regime leg breakers got to her, or CBS threatened her with firing/law suits – or both. Either way, let’s hope she or her book confirms who it was and she remains safe.

I’m serious. I fear for her safety. We really have reached banana republic status.

She is a prime example of what a report should be like. If a republican was president now she would still have her job along with expectations of a Pulitzer Prize.

plutorocks on March 10, 2014 at 3:32 PM

Politico article was a hoot to read. They were trying very hard to straddle the line of being “objective”, but still getting in little digs about her being “agenda driven” and “doubting impartiality” along with “polarizing figure” from their usual “sources”.

Yeah, I know. People who insist on doing their jobs properly are a real buzzkill.

I do hope she stays away from CNN. The book should be interesting.

No, I’ll disagree here AP. I respect Attkisson far more than Tapper, particularly with her efforts across a slew of Obama Administration scandals. With Tapper, it just looks like he goes through the motions of being balanced at times.

As for CNN – the moronic Zucker already has passed on hard news and seems more like making the network a cross between his old NBC Today program and Comedy Channel’s Colbert / Daily Show in a slightly more serious manner. I also can’t see a serious reporter, leaving a network because she believes she is being prevented from reporting facts, would want to move to a network that counts Candy Crowley as one of their most ‘respected’.

Sounds like a brave journalist who’s speaking truth to power; except she was doing this while a Democrat was in the White House, so she’s a polarizing figure instead.

I hope she doesn’t go to Fox. There need to be people willing to challenge liberal policies in a broader selection of publications, and those publications should be embarrassed for their lack of diversity.

So now it’s considered “agenda-driven” to do investigative reporting on the administration? Right–only since Jan. 2009. If Bush had done half of what Obama has done, the MSM would be screaming impeachment.

The double standard is breathtaking.

juliesa on March 10, 2014 at 3:37 PM

True investigative reporters should have had field days with Obama ever since he came on the scene. Many of those who consider themselves conservative failed in their investigations also, having given up before finding a verifiable answer to many burning questions that are still unanswered.

iamsaved on March 10, 2014 at 3:39 PM

GarandFan on March 10, 2014 at 3:42 PM

Just a wee bit too hard on that fraud in the White House, and it’s “out the door baby” to an honest reporter doing her job.

I swear CBS along with the other major lamestream media outlets are such an aggravating joke. I wonder if they realize just how many viewers out there are laughing at, flipping off, or otherwise venting their displeasure at the oh-so-serious and concerned faces of Williams, Pelley, the ditz on ABC, and all the rest when their statist mugs come on the tube.

They’re just propaganda figureheads, spreading their laundered and processed “news” while NOT mentioning SO many stories that frankly, don’t fit the narrative they’re trying to promulgate. They figure if they don’t mention certain newsworthy stories, they don’t exist. I’m so ashamed and disappointed in what mass media journalism has become. Fie on all of them!

BigWillieStyles on March 10, 2014 at 3:56 PM

So because most of her stories were critical of the current administration, CBS decides she has a liberal bias. Maybe I’m nuts, but I think most of an investigative reporter’s reporting should be critical of whoever is in charge – that’s the whole point, right? Why investigate those who have no power, and who really wants an investigative reporter doing nothing but fluff pieces. Well, obviously CBS does, but that’s just a sign of the crazy times we live in.

mbs on March 10, 2014 at 3:56 PM

At the same time, Attkisson’s own reporting on the Obama administration, which some staffers characterized as [non-leftist] agenda-driven, had led network executives to doubt the impartiality of her reporting.

I honestly have no problem with the media being critical and skeptical of Republican administrations. The problem is they will not do the same to a Democrat administration. That is where the bias is, and that’s not journalism. It’s cheerleading. It’s the nature of governance that most abuses of power, botched execution, and general corruption is going to come from the governing party. What Attkisson outrageously insisted on was being just as hard on Obama as the media was on Bush. She is, in other words, a reporter with principles.

MinnesotaSlinger on March 10, 2014 at 4:44 PM

The article indicated that since last April or May she had been negotiating an end to her CBS relationship. These things can be complex. In June of last year there was a break in of her computer (a federal crime btw). She has been completely absent from the “journalistic” scene since that break in. One might reasonably connect those dots which is why she went public with the break in story, but CBS went silent soon after. Note too that she will be publishing a book by an non-CBS affiliated publisher.

We applaud her ethics while working for the propaganda machine, but you can bet her buy out agreement will contain all sorts of restrictions on her ability to ‘tell the story’ about CBS and its Obama connection. Just sayin…..there may be a lot not said.

John Hinderaker at Power Line makes an excellent point:

Attkisson’s detractors at CBS say her work has been “agenda-driven,” which means that she has been critical of the Obama administration. She has also investigated Republicans and a variety of other issues in the course of winning five Emmy awards.

But here is a question: do you remember any journalist who produced stories critical of the Bush administration being criticized by media insiders as “agenda-driven?” No, neither do I.

She does great work when she is there…but my goodness she takes a lot of time off for just getting a new show.

cptacek on March 10, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Part of the deal when you are a new mom and have those kind of ratings…

right2bright on March 10, 2014 at 5:17 PM

I bet it really was tough for her getting stories on the air!

Her boss at CBS (David Rhodes) is the brother of Ben Rhodes, speechwriter for President Obama.

The world of the Governing Class is a small, inbred world, indeed.

SubmarineDoc on March 10, 2014 at 5:18 PM

BTW, Ben Rhodes is credited with coming up with the Benghazi cover-up story regarding the video…and CBS cheerfully bannered that story line.

Gee, why would an investigative reporter be often investigating the failures of the current administration?

Nope, gotta be a political agenda at work. No real investigative reporter would do all that investigating of the people in power!

What is this “CBS” thing of which you speak?

WhatSlushfund on March 10, 2014 at 3:36 PM

The televised edition of Pravda.

Sad to say, but a good investigative reporter has been silenced and no matter where she goes the message is clear where the MSM will stay politically. She may well end up at FNC and that would be great for her wallet, but FNC does not have the budget to expand their investigating reporting to match the MSM and/or CNN. FNC’s model is news entertainment. Digital can’t afford her or the budgets to be anything other than news commentary for the foreseeable future. Not sure if she could help Jeff Zucker and their ratings in the short-term. Just to be clear, Jeff Zucker is very smart….say what you want about him.

In the MSM, progressivism is the middle and everything else is extreme, thus she had to go. Don’t think that FNC, especially Bill O, does not see the future and will trend to being less conservative. To the left in media it is all power/agenda first…money second. To the right in media it is about the money first….and trying to be relevant second.

Guess a better question is….where can a honest investigative reporter go to do their work in a way that informs the common folks? I have no idea at this point in time. Guess she should cash it in and sell books or work at FNC. Who knows maybe she will take the high road and put country before career? I doubt it.

I like her and wish there were tons more like her…..but there is none currently in the MSM. Man, I am now depressed!!!!!

HonestLib on March 10, 2014 at 5:26 PM

This whole “respect for Jake Tapper” thing…I don’t get it. He’s as big a hack as the next MSM Obama propagandist. He is EXTREMELY close to Axelrod. Whatever Tapper puts out has Axelrod’s stamp on it

Fox News should hire her to replace BOR, he’s ready for retirement.

Mmmmmm…Sharyl Attkisson in a cheerleader uniform!

Paging lorien.

Oh look — an intellectual.

Alien on March 10, 2014 at 5:32 PM

Ideally, she would go somewhere besides Fox News. But there’s not a nickel’s worth of difference between the media outlets, and she would be just as stifled at NBC, ABC, or CNN.

So Fox is where she’s going to wind up. And a lot of this talk of her ‘political agenda’ is prep to dismiss her work wherever she goes from here.

She would be a great asset to Fox News. I think people who expect her to be conservative might be disappointed, but Greta van Susteren isn’t all that conservative, either, and still does a great job for Fox.
