Sharyl Attkisson resigns from CBS, partly due to “liberal bias”

posted at 3:21 pm on March 10, 2014 by Allahpundit

First Liz Wahl quits RT over Crimea, now this. It’s been a bad week for state TV.

Coincidentally, Alisyn Camerota announced today that she’s leaving Fox News after 16 years, leaving a vacancy in the 1 p.m. hour. (Seriously, though, I think that’s a coincidence.)

Attkisson, who has been with CBS News for two decades, had grown frustrated with what she saw as the network’s liberal bias, an outsized influence by the network’s corporate partners and a lack of dedication to investigative reporting, several sources said. She increasingly felt like her work was no longer supported and that it was a struggle to get her packages on television.

At the same time, Attkisson’s own reporting on the Obama administration, which some staffers characterized as agenda-driven, had led network executives to doubt the impartiality of her reporting. She iscurrently at work on a book — tentatively titled “Stonewalled: One Reporter’s Fight for Truth in Obama’s Washington” — which addresses the challenges of reporting critically on the Obama administration…

But Attkisson had become a polarizing figure at the network, sources there said. While some championed her relentless dedication to investigations — ranging from defective Firestone Tires to the Fast and Furious gunwalking scandal — others saw evidence of a political agenda, particularly against President Obama. (The bulk of Attkisson’s work since 2009 has focused on the failures or perceived failures of the Obama administration, including the administration’s failed green energy investments and the attack in Benghazi, though she has reported on several Republican failures as well.)

Fast & Furious, Benghazi, Solyndra, the ObamaCare rollout — she’s spent the last five years digging into all of them. In a different world, she would have been promoted to “60 Minutes”; as it is, per Politico, she spent months negotiating an early end to her contract with CBS. The bit above about her being frustrated with liberal bias rings true, too. She’s been complaining about that, albeit in more oblique terms, for a long time now.

With the possible exception of Tapper, she’s the most respected major-network reporter working today among conservatives. It’s a fait accompli that her book will make a splash on the right. What then? Fox is the obvious choice, but if CNN decides to double down on hard news, maybe they’ll go after her. They’re planning to fill Piers Morgan’s 9 p.m. time slot at the end of the month with a rotating group of interim hosts, Tapper included. If a newsier hour is well received, maybe they’ll bring in more reporters like Attkisson — although Anderson Cooper’s show is already sorta hard news and he hasn’t ousted O’Reilly at 8. Maybe it’s time to be truly bold: “Sensible Reasonableness” at 9 p.m. with your co-hosts David Frum and Michael Smerconish. Take that, Megyn and Rachel.

By the way, did we ever find out who was behind that suspicious activity with her home computers? Attkisson had a suspicion about it last summer, but unless I missed something, that’s the last we heard.

This is really a shame, because I think it’s important to have as many honest and fair reporters at as many different broadcasters and papers as possible. If every conservative reporter or moderate/liberal-but-fair reporter ends up on Fox News, that’s actually a bad thing.

Fox News is great and everything, but I think people like Atkinsson and Tapper have been doing yeoman’s work for honest journalism in a sphere increasingly filled with leftist groupthink and outright partisan hackery.

The answer to that isn’t to go anchors aweigh and live in isolation with Fox News and the partisan hackery that we happen to agree with, it’s to encourage more robust real journalism at all media outlets.

Not sure if you are calling FOX ‘partisan hackery’ but there are several studies that suggest they are in fact less partisan than one would think based on the slime that their competitors spread.

In fact, there was another recent study that showed that Fox does a great job in having guests on to talk about issues from different perspectives.

This whole “respect for Jake Tapper” thing…I don’t get it. He’s as big a hack as the next MSM Obama propagandist. He is EXTREMELY close to Axelrod. Whatever Tapper puts out has Axelrod’s stamp on it

beedubya on March 10, 2014 at 5:27 PM

Because he’s one of the few who will occasionally find that nut or hit the stopped clock whereas no one else will even remotely go there.

Having someone of his stature even sniff around the edges of the Obama Regime is remarkable enough that it makes him noticeable.

Now whether he deserves the respect he’s given by the right? IMHO not really. He stops short and has given cover to Obama (the one that sticks in my mind the most is the man who Romney featured in his “you didn’t build that” slam ads – Tapper did a search and find on the man’s history and blogged it – in a direct attempt to negate Romney’s rebuttal).

Fun fact: Tapper’s wife is a recruiter for Planned Parenthood.

Second fun fact: I read in a Newsbuster’s article that Tapper stated he doesn’t vote for presidents due to being independent.

Take those as you will.

Almost agreed…but not quite. Tapper will, on occasion, pretend not to be what he so obviously is — a D.C. liberal. On occasion.

But the only reason he is ever mentioned in the same breath as journalism is because Chris Wallace is at Fox News, and is therefore disqualified from consideration for compliments of any kind.

If there was a Republican in the White House, she would be a Pulitzer Prize winner and the most celebrated journalist in America.

TarheelBen on March 10, 2014 at 6:57 PM

It’s hard not to attack Obama failures if you’re true to old-fashioned journalism standards, as there have been so many failures, and damn few successes.

Another Drew on March 10, 2014 at 7:01 PM

It’s so sadthat the major networksview real journalism as agenda driven just because there is a Democratin the White House. She has been doing great work-better than Fox, which doesn’t do that much actual investigative reporting.

It’s tragic that the news media can’t see how partisan they have become, and that looking for answers and the truth can be labeled agenda driven.

Good grief. With this bunch, a reporter/journalist/host could say they thought Teh Won should have worn blue slacks instead of brown and be excoriated for being too critical of him. They could comment that he should have chosen low-fat ice cream instead of full-fat and be drummed out of the media biz. The point is, the lame-stream media is so in love with Teh Won that they will not tolerate ANY kind of dissent, no matter how soft it might be.

I hope she does well elsewhere.

Nice Scripture from Isaiah 59: very apropos to the times we are living in. However, you should have also posted the context in which it was made.

“In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice stands afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Yea, truth fails; and he that departs from evil makes himself a prey: and the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no judgment. And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore His arm brought salvation unto Him; and His righteousness, it sustained Him. For He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon His head; and He put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak. According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay, fury to His adversaries, recompence to His enemies; to the islands He will repay recompence. So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. As for Me, this is My covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and My words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.” Isaiah 59: 13-21

Personally, I would have posted the entire chapter, but for the short attention span of most modern readers, no offense intended. Nevertheless, it is important to know the reason “truth is fallen in the street”, and what the Lord intended to do about it.

If you were her and your computer had been, as she suspects, tampered with or hacked your boss or company should have been standing on their head. The fact that CBS and other reporters remained silent goes to show you they had more loyalty to Obama than they did their own journalist, no wonder she wanted to check out early. I suspect that’s what finally turned her, she probably could deal wit the bias, but her networks lack of loyalty to her was the last straw.

Similar quote to ariel’s above that keeps coming to my mind these last few days:
“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness….
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
And prudent in their own sight!” Isaiah 5:20-21

Cleombrotus on March 10, 2014 at 9:49 PM

I completely agree that sometimes some individual points may get lost when viewing the larger context. However, it is the context of the larger text that lends the individual text its meaning, thus making it altogether indispensable for understanding and applying the “spiritual dynamics” to be gleaned from the passage.

The Holy Scriptures are not a plaything to be casually bandied about. Remember who is the Author and proceed to handle with extreme caution. Always quote accurately and remember to source your quote, unless you want to run afoul of said Author.

Do the math.
Part of that time, she was investigating a Republican administration.
Which is okay.
Not sure what she was reporting about Clinton’s affairs of state.

But what difference, at this point, does that make?

AesopFan on March 10, 2014 at 11:13 PM

At the height of her F&F reporting, I sent her flowers at her office, with a big Thank You note for her reporting, got a nice thank you and “made my day” from her via twitter.

Courageous wife and mom. Hope she gets a VERY LARGE soap box to continue her work.

If you want to back her up, send a note or tweet or whatever.

fred5678 on March 10, 2014 at 11:35 PM

Of course the brass and other reporters at CBS don’t like her.

She fails to CONFORM. Ever notice how you can watch the news on any of the network channels without noticing any difference in the way stories are reported?

That’s because of the self imposed conformity of a large part of the news media.

In fact, if you look at any of the leftist complaints, about the tea party, 2nd Amendment supporters or anyone they don’t like, what they dislike is the failure to conform to what they expect.

The Holy Scriptures are not a plaything to be casually bandied about. Remember who is the Author and proceed to handle with extreme caution. Always quote accurately and remember to source your quote, unless you want to run afoul of said Author.

I assure you that I never casually post Scriptural references. I do, however, have a lot of respect for the intellects and attitudes of most of the posters here and allow for the possibility that I do not HAVE TO source my quotes when quoting Scripture but do so intending and hoping that they will make the logical inferences and draw the necessary conclusions to what I am posting.

In this particular case, the context was not directly relevant and would have seemed an unnecessary and perhaps inconsiderate intrusion into the topic at hand. However, the parallels can be instructive in order to make the connection from everyday reality to the spiritual dynamics constantly at work.

It was the consistency of those dynamics to what I observed in everyday life that convinced me the most, when first becoming a Christian, that what I had “stumbled upon” was, indeed, the correct interpretation of reality.

Cleombrotus on March 11, 2014 at 11:41 AM

I always expected all news organizations to be hard on the current administration, no matter which party was in control. After all, who else has the resources to spend and the time to look under each rock and fine out what the real truth and purposes are of what happens in Washington…or in any State Capitol or even each home town government. It is a shame that the owners’ of the newspapers and other media now impose their own political bias…and it makes me suspect that they also impose their “view” regarding any business that they favor for personal financial positions…something that, in highly respected media organizations, would once have been abhorred.

Maybe if she had uncovered some evidence of intentional wrongdoing in any of these scandals… she might have received more support from the network

BubbaHoTep on March 11, 2014 at 1:57 PM

I do not HAVE TO source my quotes when quoting Scripture but do so intending and hoping that they will make the logical inferences and draw the necessary conclusions to what I am posting.

Some may make the “logical inferences”, some might not. Perhaps you are assuming too much when it comes to the Scriptural literacy of those who post here. This goes to the heart of why we source our quotes from Scripture, because the Scriptures are constantly misquoted, quoted out of context and altogether bastardized in modern society. “Truth has fallen in the streets”, that is exactly why it is important to source the quote, so others can find the truth for themselves from the very mouth of God.
