DeBlasio faces three lawsuits for trying to shut down charter schools

posted at 10:01 pm on March 10, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

To mark the beginning of his tenure, liberal and labor union tool Mayor Bill DeBlasio started by waging war on low-income charter-school students:

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is blocking the opening or expansion of multiple charter schools that were approved last year.

Included were three Eva Moskowitz-run Success Academy schools, approved by former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, were to operate within existing public school buildings beginning in the fall.

The de Blasio administration, however, conducted a review that resulted in the charter schools being rolled back.

He’s faced backlash for these decisions, and now he’ll face lawsuits:

Mayor de Blasio is getting hit on Monday with three new lawsuits by charter-school supporters, his traditional enemies — just as his pals who despise the popular institutions are threatening him with legal action for offering a compromise.

The Success Academy, a charter-school network run by his nemesis Eva Moskowitz, is filing a federal civil-rights lawsuit to overturn his decision to disallow its Central Harlem middle school from sharing space with a public school.

Opening a second front, Success officials are going to Albany to file papers with state Education Commissioner John King to try to reverse City Hall’s decision to keep two new Success Academy elementary schools from opening.

One is scheduled for shared space at Murry Bergtraum HS downtown and the other at August Martin HS in Queens.

All three co-locations had been approved last year by then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

For the children, of course, in the deBlasio administration:

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña says charter- school students she booted from city-owned space in Harlem “are on their own” and can always go back to regular public schools.

I love DeBlasio!

This man is going to destroy the wealth of a bunch of rich democrats!

Not to mention open up a chance for the GOP, if they had any intelligence at all, to push “education emancipation”. That is right, “education emancipation,” should be the battle cry of the GOP to help win some poor and minority voters.

Democrats want to keep poor minority students in educational bondage by forcing them to remain in awful public schools that keep them stupid and intellectually enslaved.

Fight fire with fire…we need slogans that inspire people to fight back against the man.

What seems to be going on is that, when I “preview”, sometimes the system picks it up as a “submit” before I hit the button — but nothing happens: the comment doesn’t appear.

My auto-reload is disabled, so awhile later I pop the “allow” button, and my comment then shows up. (I wait a bit in case it’s still in the queue.)

Don’t know if that is your problem or not.

Could be related to the time-traveling glitch.

Sterling Holobyte on March 11, 2014 at 12:46 AM

All the more reason to end government run public schools.

Iblis on March 10, 2014 at 11:09 PM

In the good old days (when we walked to school 7 miles through the snow uphill both ways), it made sense for the community to organize and fund schools. In Texas, these were called “Independent School Districts”, because they were supposedly not part of the government; I guess in some places, schools were organized through the township or county government.

IIRC (and I’m just going on memory, not research right here), States got involved so that there were some “standards” for curriculum and quality; also to capture economies of scale in vetting and purchasing textbooks (i.e., having an entity big enough to lobby the publishers).

Federal laws stemming from the Civil Rights Act and other “equalizing” legislation put the Feds’ fingers in the pie, and although some good was accomplished, once the bulk of the reforms were finished, the DOE had to find other things to do to justify itself (all regulations and departments and bureaus should have a sunset law and a “mission completed” benchmark in the establishing legislation).

Now, with the internet, cheap publishing, video courses, etc., there is no reason to have anything other than private schools, although I would allow for subsidies to the truly poor so that class divisions don’t become entrenched (which they are moving back to now, because the quality of education at public schools is so miserable).

And yeah, NYers, 80% of you didn’t vote, you’ve got no right to complain about 17% who voted for Kaiser Wilhelm.

Iblis on March 10, 2014 at 11:09 PM

trapeze on March 11, 2014 at 2:11 AM

This may very well be the opening the Rs need to start making significant inroads in the black community. At the moment, it’s just NYC schools that are in the headlines. But we all know the larger issue of the absolute failure of our public schools is nationwide. The Republicans need to pound this issue senseless and show the black community how badly they’ve been sold-out by the Ds.

But, they are the Stupid Party after all. They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

nukemhill on March 11, 2014 at 7:23 AM

One thing that the left always overachieves at is destruction (because after all it’s easier to destroy than create). Just as Obama has wrought a generation’s worth of destruction on the country in a mere 5 years, DeBlasio will manage to do the same to New York City in less than 5 years.

ConstantineXI on March 11, 2014 at 7:44 AM

I don’t get it, he stated this is who he is, at least he was honest and forthright.

The people voted for him, they supported him, and he did not deceive them…this is who he is.

So they have no right to whine about it, the got exactly who they voted for.

Sorry, but you can’t have it both ways…a liberal dictator, and conservative values.

regmgr on March 11, 2014 at 9:30 AM

The report is that these charter schools are highly successful and kids going there have test scores #1 in the state. Great liberal idea is to keep all the kids at the same level of dumbness by making them all go to public schools. Way to go Oblaisio!

Herb on March 11, 2014 at 9:40 AM

The Success Academy, a charter-school network run by his nemesis Eva Moskowitz, is filing a federal civil-rights lawsuit to overturn his decision to disallow its Central Harlem middle school from sharing space with a public school.

Libs know you can shop for the “right” or “best” federal judge, one who will hear your story. Witness here the internal division among progressives between keeping the downtrodden in their place versus racking up the union dues. Hmmm…lives of minority children or money for politics?

And the media sees nothing, hears nothings, knows nothing…

School choice is Democrat kryptonite!

DublOh7 on March 11, 2014 at 10:18 AM

This guy is the only person who could make President Obama look like a moderate. Amazing. How can anyone who has just been elected by an amazing majority then turn around and poke the largest support group he has in the collective eye? Is his Progressive Liberal Socialist ideology so entrenched that he thinks he has been made dictator of New York City and can do as he will? Certainly he can for a time, but the real leaders know that the trick to leading is to stay far enough ahead so that the mob cannot catch you, but not so far ahead that you cannot sense when they are going to turn, so that you can also turn and continue to appear to be the leader. Clearly this guy has no sense of this…

I feel sorry for New Yorkers…even if they did bring this on themselves.

TKPedersen42 on March 11, 2014 at 12:04 PM

Why do Democrats oppose programs that actually work?

I know Democrats support Common Core, a program designed to keep kids stupid and produce ignorant adults dependent on government handots and back Unions who fight for pedophile teachers so they can’t be hired and collect checks from home. Closing down Charter schools that produce smarter kids than anything their common-core-based public schools.

DeBlasio needs to be ‘re-called’.

easyt65 on March 11, 2014 at 12:31 PM

Well, the Progressive, Liberal Democrats pride themselves on being the protectors and helpers of the downtrodden. What would be their future if those “downtrodden” were sucessful and no longer needed help? They need those in need to remain being in need.

TKPedersen42 on March 11, 2014 at 12:39 PM

It would be racist to let minority children leave the failing public school system and go to a private institution where they might actually get the chance to learn something other than liberal doctrines about how they are never going to succeed because of being downtrodden and stepped on by ‘the man’.

After all, if they were to become educated in a way that allowed them to become successful in school, go to college, get a job, get promoted, manage the business, start their own business, then they could become wealthy, and then they might become Republicans. And EVIL!

So the Democrats are working hard to make sure that does not happen.
