Brave Sir Robin ran away (leaving his pregnant girlfriend to get mugged)

posted at 9:21 am on March 4, 2014 by Jazz Shaw

From time to time we highlight some news items here about responsible gun owners who thwart crime by way of exercising their God given Second Amendment rights, but that really only tells one half of the story. Unfortunately, there are other tales out there across America – sadly, far too many to keep track of – where people react differently and things don’t go as well. This is one of those stories, and since I first saw it on Twitter it’s really gotten under my skin.

This event involves a couple in Annapolis, Maryland who were leaving their residence on some very important business. The girl was in the final weeks of pregnancy and had gone into labor. Her “boyfriend” went out with her to head to the hospital. That’s when things took a turn for the worse.

The couple was confronted by three men with guns as they left an apartment on Copeland Street early Sunday. When the woman’s boyfriend fled, police spokeswoman Cpl. Amy Miguez says, the suspects tried to get the woman to let them into an apartment, but she didn’t have a key.

That’s when two of the men took off in the woman’s car, Miguez says.

Because this took place in Maryland, the couple was unarmed. (Let’s face it… if you find anyone not wearing a police or military uniform in Annapolis who has a gun, odds are probably better than 99% that they’re a criminal.) So I can sympathize to a certain extent how alarmed they must have felt when confronted by three armed thugs. But the bothersome elements of this story don’t end with the bad guys or the lack of concealed carry permits in the state. Let’s revisit one phrase from the story.

When the woman’s boyfriend fled…

You ran away? While your girlfriend was standing there in labor facing down three armed hoodlums? This shoots right past the idea of whether or not you might have wanted to marry the girl after getting her in a family way (that’s a question for another day, but props for at least volunteering to go to the hospital), but having done so, how did you leave her there on the sidewalk while you bolted down the street? Yes, your safety was in danger, but for some people there comes a point in life where a man is put to a galvanizing test, and this was your moment.

Another phrase stands out.

the suspects tried to get the woman to let them into an apartment, but she didn’t have a key…

You not only abandoned her in the face of imminent violence, but you took the keys, too? She couldn’t even get back into your home. And once the car was stolen, she was essentially left on the sidewalk, wracked with labor pains. How does one wake up in the morning after delivering such a performance in a crisis and even look in the mirror?

I wish there was some overarching, positive message or lesson to take away from all this. Sadly, there is not. The good news is that the police later arrested two of the muggers and the woman made it to a local hospital. No word is available on the location or status of the “boyfriend.”

He he.. Sorry, I am well and truly taken by a man I know would die rather than leaving me in labor to face down three thugs. And he is wonderfully Alpha.

This was another black on black crime according to the comments I read in the Baltimore Sun. It took place in a housing project.

Copeland St. isn’t so much a housing project as it is a rundown street just out of the downtown area. It features prominently in much of the crime reporting in The Capital

I don’t get the point of this commentary. The only thing that matters is no one was killed or even hurt. If they got into the apartment, maybe they get killed. If the man stayed he might have been shot. It ended well. That’s all that matters. I find it impossible to second guess what happened, only knowing the story third hand.

When you hit submit, did the page refresh and instead of taking you back to the bottom of the page, leave you at the top. If yes, the mill has it. When this happens in the future go back one page in your browser and your comment will still be there in the comment box. Reword it if you think there may be something the mill picked out. The mill here at HA is strange. For example, type in salt water with no space.

They don’t tend to run away…

ladyingray on March 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

I tend to agree on the drawing-down-on-3-guys-with-their-piece-already-out scenario. However, a Yellow level of awareness (or Red, given that they evidently live in a ghetto) might have allowed you to get your piece into action before the actual confrontation – causing the bad guys to walk away. But, at least if you’re carrying, you have the option. (And I know that Bishop and Lucy were not saying otherwise.)

It ended well. That’s all that matters.

LashRambo on March 4, 2014 at 9:35 AM

No, that’s not all that matters.

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I find it impossible to second guess what happened, only knowing the story third hand.

LashRambo on March 4, 2014 at 9:35 AM

Yes, there might be more to it. But, as it reads, this is pretty egregious behavior from the “boyfriend”. I can’t see any way in which this guy isn’t a coward – and that’s possibly from before he walked out the door that day.

GWB on March 4, 2014 at 10:33 AM

Oh, I’m sure he has no problem whatsoever. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he raises a big stink (with an attorney by his side), bitching that nobody else helped his girlfriend while he was running away.

I wonder if Joe Biden will chime in and give advice how to fend off three armed thugs while in labor. Come to think of it, Joe probably still hasn’t quite grasped of the concept of where babies come from.

Once again it proves the gun grabbers correct that the best defense is to escape. It’s unfortunate that the woman was too stupid to do anything other then stand there. The only fault I can find with the man, and yes he was a real man in every sense of the word, is that he didn’t vomit prior to running away but that’s just a small quibble. As a woman I’m very disappointed that the woman didn’t at least claim she was having her period. Then again maybe she did and not all the details are known.

What if “the boyfriend” was armed too. Would the story be “boyfriend defends his girlfriend during attack” Or would the story be about the prevelance of guns and violence in the poorer sections of Annapolis? IMO, there is no way that the boyfriend comes off well in this story short of standing his ground.

My son, who is 6’ 6”, now handles that duty for me. He told me something about the pink tennis balls on my walker not being very intimidating or something.

HonestLib on March 4, 2014 at 10:48 AM

Yeah, I’d replace them with something a little more “attention getting.” Bobcat skulls, maybe. Rattlesnake heads?

A walker is an acceptable place to mount some ordnance.

When the woman’s boyfriend fled…

LOL, pregnant girlfriend is going to pulverize his scrawny liberal pansy a$$.

Midas on March 4, 2014 at 10:55 AM

What if “the boyfriend” was armed too. Would the story be “boyfriend defends his girlfriend during attack” Or would the story be about the prevelance of guns and violence in the poorer sections of Annapolis? IMO, there is no way that the boyfriend comes off well in this story short of standing his ground.

Happy Nomad on March 4, 2014 at 10:43 AM

The story would be how he defended his girlfriend and was then arrested for being a criminal (aka gun owner).

Midas on March 4, 2014 at 10:57 AM

It’s Maryland. The boyfriend would have been arrested for having a gun…

ladyingray on March 4, 2014 at 10:45 AM

Those arrested were from Maryland and DC. Given the “protections” in those states, I’m sure they were tracked down by gun registration records. ;0

At the very least, he could sling a pair of six-shooters across the handles.

LOL Mount a scope and a rifle on it. That should do the trick.

It is quite telling that the hard core progressives here dislike me more than conservatives.

HonestLib on March 4, 2014 at 11:02 AM

This smacks of Laci Peterson and Carol DeMaiti Stewart. Wouldn’t be surprised if the BF set this up and the “robbers” got cold feet about shooting a pregnant woman in the stomach.

Maddie on March 4, 2014 at 11:05 AM

I wish there was some overarching, positive message or lesson to take away from all this. Sadly, there is not.

By the man getting away, he was free to call the police. The woman was less likely to get hurt than the man once he left. Neither apparently were hurt. The bad guys were caught. That seems like several positive messages to me. That said, I would not leave my wife in that situation.

Here’s the difference in political philosophy..

Conservatives think their political opposites are naïve or stupid.

Liberals tend to think that their political opposites are evil.

You can compromise, work with, teach, debate, and generally argue with stupid, but if you feel someone is inherently evil, you completely discount them as fellow humans.

melle1228 on March 4, 2014 at 11:06 AM

The article mis-identifies the ex-boyfriend…

ha ha, no, no, I’m sure she stayed with him and thinks he’s a model citizen…

The Schaef on March 4, 2014 at 11:07 AM

I don’t blame him. He could’ve gotten hurt.
