Krauthammer: The admin that thinks climate change is our biggest security threat is shocked that Russia is interested in territory

posted at 8:41 pm on March 3, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

As Ed noted in reiterating even the Washington Post‘s incredulity this morning, whatever foreign-policy la-la-land President Obama and his advisers are living in isn’t anywhere close to one in which other leaders like Russia and China are currently acting out their aggression. The Obama administration might be over American exceptionalism as a leading force in the world, but that doesn’t mean that other countries are going to follow suit and just graciously bow out of the game.

Remember the speech he gave at the U.N. when he started his administration? He said no nation can or should dominate another. I mean, there’s not a 12-year-old in the world who believes that. And he said the alignment of nations rooted in the cleavages of the long ago Cold War make no sense in this interconnected world. As our Secretary of State said today, or yesterday, after all this, this is a 19th century action in a 21st century world. As if what he means his actions where governments pursue expansion, territory domination, no longer exist in this century, as if that hasn’t been a constant in all of human history since Hannibal. They imagine the world as a new interconnected world where climate change is the biggest threat and they are shocked that the Russians actually are interested in territory.

Ukraine is now claiming that there are 16,000 troops deployed in the Crimea region as of Monday afternoon. So, there’s that.

Obama is anti-colonial. When he said that no country should have power over another, that exactly it right there. He doesn’t think any country should be more powerful than another, especially the US. This is why Putin doesn’t give a damn what Obama says.

Part of reassurance is intellectual. Like Palin, he’s a rookie, but in his 19 months on the national stage he has achieved fluency in areas in which he has no experience. In the foreign policy debate with McCain, as in his July news conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Obama held his own — fluid, familiar, and therefore plausibly presidential.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. famously said of Franklin Roosevelt that he had a “second-class intellect, but a first-class temperament.” Obama has shown that he is a man of limited experience, questionable convictions, deeply troubling associations (Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, Tony Rezko) and an alarming lack of self-definition — do you really know who he is and what he believes? Nonetheless, he’s got both a first-class intellect and a first-class temperament. That will likely be enough to make him president.

– Charles Krauthammer

Let’s see if we can have a reasoned discussion about end-of-life counseling. We might start by asking Sarah Palin to leave the room. I’ve got nothing against her. She’s a remarkable political talent. But there are no “death panels” in the Democratic health care bills, and to say that there are is to debase the debate.

Russia & China have been playing Obama’s ass like a fiddle and they just handed it to him…..

China has been buying Treasury’s with no intention of ever getting paid back.

They lulled Obama, the democrats and RINO’s into a false sense of security.

What do we have to show for it?

Lazy asses on welfare and an impotent military. Well played China, well played.

Putin will now work on getting Europe under his sphere.

I would say we are looking at a situation that is far worse than 1939.

Hitler will be a piker compared to Putin.

And Putin has his buddies in the Middle East to raise hell as well…..

If Obama was not such an idiot, I would say he was in on the whole deal.

redguy on March 3, 2014 at 9:14 PM

The Russians are only behaving this way because they fear our nation, just as the Chinese are also building up their military out of fear of our country. President Obama realizes we must completely dismantle our war machines in order to eliminate the world’s fears of the USA. The president has learned through Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Syria that the absence of the US military is the only thing that leads to a true peace.

Once President Obama completely eliminates the American military the US will no longer be a nation that troubles the world. …and the President’s dream of a transformed America will finally become a reality.

All of this SMART Power and having these super smart people in control sure is twisting the world into war. There is a reason that people that think they are smart are the easiest to fool and Obama and his merry band of idiots think they are very, very smart.

“A rift appeared to be opening up on Monday night between the US and Europe on how to punish Vladimir Putin for his occupation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, with European capitals resisting Washington’s push towards tough sanctions.

With the Americans, supported by parts of eastern Europe and Sweden, pushing for punitive measures against Moscow, EU foreign ministers divided into hawks and doves, preferring instead to pursue mediation and monitoring of the situation in Ukraine and to resist a strong sanctions package against Russia.

On the ground in Crimea, Russian forces continued to tightentheir stranglehold, intimidating and surrounding Ukrainian marines in an attempt to force them to surrender without shots being fired. There were further ominous developments in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian crowds forced their way into a number of government buildings.

Barack Obama said the White House was “examining a whole series of steps – economic, diplomatic – that will isolate Russia and will have a negative impact on Russia’s economy and status in the world”.

He added that the US state department was reviewing its entire portfolio of trade and co-operation with Moscow, including preparing a raft of possible measures targeting senior government and military officials implicated in the invasion of the Ukrainian peninsula. Obama said the condemnation from other countries aimed at Russia “indicates the degree to which Russia’s on the wrong side of history on this”.

The president is expected to use his executive authority to bypass Congress to quickly target senior Russian officials. But Washington is clearly aware it may struggle to rally support for punitive measures from Europe.

“The most important thing is for us – the United States – to make sure that we don’t go off without the European community,” the majority leader in the Senate, Democrat Harry Reid, told Politico. “Their interests are really paramount if we are going to do sanctions of some kind. We have to have them on board with us.”

But at an emergency meeting in Brussels the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy and Spain resisted calls for trade sanctions, instead limiting discussion to freezing long-running talks with Russia on visa liberalisation that would have made it easier for Russians to visit Europe.

Washington is also threatening to kick Russia out of the G8 group of leading economies, but Berlin opposes that.

Britain’s attempts to ensure any EU action against Russia over Ukraine would exempt the City of London were embarrassingly revealed when a secret government document detailing the plan was photographed in Downing Street. The document said Britain should “not support, for now, trade sanctions … or close London’s financial centre to Russians”.

Like other EU countries, and especially Germany, which obtains almost 40% of its gas and oil from Russia, the UK is reluctant to adopt measures that could damage its still fragile economic recovery.

In any event, further discussion of EU sanctions are likely to have to wait until an emergency leaders summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Rather than stronger sanctions Berlin is pushing the idea of a “contact group”, under the auspices of the democracy watchdog the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, to go to Ukraine and monitor the grievances of both sides following the Russian seizure of Crimea, achieving its aims without a shot being fired. But no decision was taken on an OSCE “factfinding mission”.

As the Russians consolidated their hold on Crimea and the US administration conceded the peninsula was under complete Russian control, there were contradictory reports of an ultimatum to remaining Ukrainian forces to surrender their weapons by early on Tuesday .

Senior Russian government figures insisted they wanted to avoid a war in Ukraine, but also demanded a new and “more inclusive” government in Kiev and that the policies of the country would have to take account of Russian interests….”

Charles Krauthammer: Vladimir Putin’s Ukraine gambit

February 28, 2014 12:00 am
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER | The Washington Post
*******************************************

The response? The EU dithers and President Barack Obama slumbers.

After silence during the first three months of Ukraine’s struggle for freedom, Obama said last week that in his view Ukraine is no “Cold War chessboard.” Unfortunately, that is what it is for Putin.

Obama wants stability, The New York Times reports, quoting internal sources.

He sees Ukraine as merely a crisis to be managed rather than an opportunity to alter the autocratic trajectory of the region, allow Ukrainians to join their destiny to the West and block Russian neo-imperialism. Sure, Obama is sympathetic to democracy, but only if it comes organically, from internal developments, and is not imposed by outside intervention but develops on its own.

But Ukraine is never on its own. American neutrality doesn’t allow an authentic Ukrainian polity to emerge. It leaves Ukraine naked to Russian pressure.

What Obama doesn’t understand is that American inaction creates a vacuum.

Putin occupies vacuums. In Ukraine, he keeps flaunting his leverage.

He’s withdrawn the multibillion-dollar aid package with which he had pulled the now-deposed Ukrainian president away from the EU. He mobilized Russian forces bordering Ukraine. His health officials are even questioning the safety of Ukrainian food exports. The message to Kiev: We can shut down your agricultural exports today, your natural gas supplies tomorrow.

Obama’s Pick Adds Foreign Expertise to Ticket

By ADAM NAGOURNEY and JEFF ZELENY
Published: August 23, 2008
***************************

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama introduced Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. as his running mate on Saturday at a boisterous rally in Springfield, Ill.,

a choice that strengthens the Democratic ticket’s credentials on foreign policy

and provides Mr. Obama a combative partner as he heads into the fight with Senator John McCain.

In Mr. Biden, Mr. Obama selected a six-term senator from Delaware best known for his expertise on foreign affairs

— Mr. Biden spent last weekend in Georgia as that nation engaged in a tense confrontation with Russia —

but also for his skills at political combat.

Mr. Obama passed over other candidates who might have brought him a state or reinforced the message of change that has been central to his candidacy.

At the rally outside the Old State Capitol where Mr. Obama announced his candidacy 19 months ago, he described Mr. Biden as a man ready to be president. And he offered a passionate and politically instructive introduction of Mr. Biden: the portrait of a running mate who filled in what many Democrats have described as the political shortcomings of Mr. Obama.

He presented Mr. Biden as the product of a Catholic, blue-collar home in Pennsylvania who had endured personal tragedy in the death of his wife and daughter and his own brush with death, a man who could relate to the culture of the Senate or of working-class voters.

“I can tell you that Joe Biden gets it,” said Mr. Obama, of Illinois.

“He’s that unique public servant who is at home in a bar in Cedar Rapids and the corridors of the Capitol; in the V.F.W. hall in Concord,

and at the center of an international crisis.

“That’s because he is still that scrappy kid from Scranton who beat the odds — the dedicated family man and committed Catholic who knows every conductor on that Amtrak train to Wilmington.”

The choice of Mr. Biden was perhaps the most critical decision Mr. Obama has made as the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee.

It suggested a concern by Mr. Obama’s advisers that his recent overseas trip might not have done enough to address persistent voter concerns about his level of experience, especially on national security.

Mr. Obama announced his selection when the conflict between Russia and Georgia

has provided Republicans an opportunity to reinject foreign policy into an election that has increasingly focused on the economy,

and as Mr. McCain, the presumed Republican nominee, has been proving himself a scrappier opponent than many Democrats had assumed he would be.

How could he not be, having been weened in the manger of the first grand experiment in socialism?

We are being governed by a socialist Chauncey Gardner, who appointed an incompetent egotistical narcissist, liar, and fool as his top international, negotiator — AKA SoS Lurch. And then there is his National Security Adviser, about whom the kindest thing one could say is she was completely fooled by the people who told her a YouTube video caused a spontaneous riot that resulted in the assassination of an Ambassador, a fellow diplomat, and two ex-Special Forces Operators.

Charles should never be forgiven this:

With him (Obama) we get a president with the political intelligence of a Bill Clinton harnessed to the steely self-discipline of a Vladimir Putin. (I say this admiringly.) With these qualities, Obama will now bestride the political stage as largely as did Reagan.

Good lord.

Krauthammer ISN’T stupid, so why does he say such utterly stupid drivel? How can guys like him be so blind?

http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_03_04/Russias-G8-partners-not-discussing-boycott-of-summit-in-Sochi-Italian-FM-8445/

Russia’s partners in the Group of Eight (Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, the United States, France, and Japan) are not discussing a boycott of the G8 summit in Sochi in June, Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said after an urgent meeting of the EU foreign ministers on Ukraine held on Monday, March 3.

The communique adopted unanimously after a long discussion and released by the White House does not call for boycotting the summit but calls for suspending the G7 countries’ participation in the preparatory meetings, she said.

So…they are just temporarily unfriending Putin, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still friends?

In D.C. they don’t need any guns, they just stab you in the back. And wallet.

Cindy Munford on March 3, 2014 at 9:52 PM

Erika, you’re asking the administration to beef up military spending again, since to make diplomacy credible you must have a robust military, which means less spending on social spending.

Obama won’t do it, ever. He probably cannot do that without risking a revolt from the Democrat caucus in Congress.

You’re also asking the President to assume a more active leadership role in alliances all around the world. But he is on the record saying America should just be one equal among many and should not be a dominating country going forward.

He won’t do it, ever. These are his core beliefs, I think, if he has any core foreign policy beliefs. It’ll never happen.

There were two elections and this guy won them both. This is what the people voted for. You reap what you sow, and voters who put the President into office are getting what they voted for.

Because all the DC elites see life from the same prism. Of Dr. Ks big prognostocations since Obama, he has been relentlessly unwilling to accept that the world does not revolve around DC. He was wrong about Obama – he is successful because he is black and fulfills one of the high truths of modern media, diversity is the greatest. Any white politician of either party would have never been even close to re-elected.

Charles was wrong about the Tea Party and he was wrong on Palin’s death panels comment – she, the state university system grad was correct in her assessment.

Dr. K is obviously a smart guy, but I’m not sure he is immune to any of the probleme-s of the DC set.

US military is ready for some action!

Gay, Lesbian Troops Perform in Drag at Fundraiser

“We didn’t think there was much of a desire for an event like this on the island but it has actually blown up,” said Navy Lt. Marissa Greene, co-chapter leader of OutServe Okinawa.

Greene said she had hoped to sell about 75 tickets to fund some future support activities for the group, which was formed last summer and still “starting from scratch.” The event was approved as a “variety show” by Kadena’s 18th Wing through the same process as other on-base fundraisers.

But an initial 200 tickets were plucked up almost immediately, so they issued another 200.

“We ended up selling 400 tickets in 10 days,” she said.

And so are the Russians

Russia Seizes Border Posts in Crimea, Says Ukraine

Ukraine’s State Border Service said Russian forces were also massing armored military vehicles on its side of a narrow sea crossing separating the region from Russia, increasing pressure on Ukrainian forces still in the region.

The movement suggested that Russia was planning to stay in Crimea for the long haul. Ukraine’s newly appointed prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, said there was little chance of resolving the standoff in the short term. But he added there was no evidence that Russian forces have tried to push out of Crimea into mainland Ukraine and that he doesn’t believe they plan to do so.
