House Intelligence chair: Putin’s playing chess while Obama’s playing marbles

posted at 6:31 pm on March 2, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

An apt analogy if ever there was one. Remember that one time Obama straight-up taunted Mitt Romney for a foreign policy supposedly harkening back to the 1980s and for chiding Obama’s nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia? Man, what a doofus Romney was! Via RCP:

Well, I think Putin is playing chess, and I think we’re playing marbles. And I don’t think it’s even close. If you look at the nuclear negotiations, we got our fannies handed to us. They took tactical nukes out of the equation. Huge mistake, especially for our allies in the Baltics. When you move down the list in Syria, the Russians got everything that they needed, they believe they needed in Syria. And so they’ve been running circles around us, and I think it’s really the naive position on the National Security Council and the president’s advisors that if we just keep giving things to Russia, they’ll finally wake up and say, boy, the United States isn’t all that bad. That is completely missing the motivations of why Russia does what Russia does. And, again, they have an interest in expanding their buffer zones by influence — I don’t think by Russian occupation — but by influence in cases like the Crimea, I think Moldova next, and other places that it’s in their interest to continue to push out that buffer zone. And, by the way, the big one that started this was the absolute retreat on our missile defense system in Poland and Czechoslovakia. It caused huge problems for our allies and emboldened the Russians, and it really has been a downhill slide.

Obama is anti-colonial. He doesn’t think any country should be more powerful than another, especially not the US. His reduction of the Armed Forced to pre-WWII levels, the buying of oil from Brazil and not issuing licenses in the US, the delegation of foreign policy decisions to the UN or other world organizations, the dismantling of the nuclear arsenal, etc. shows this quite clearly. Ron Paul could not have done a better job.

Edward Lucas:
“Out of our own self-interest we promised to protect Ukraine.

Now we have failed the country – and I fear we will suffer for it.

Putin’s attempt to recreate the Soviet empire threatens not only Ukraine, but the peace of Europe. Our supine reaction is suicidally risky.

Britain, the US and Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 – a deal in which Ukraine gave up its ex-Soviet nuclear weapons, thus ensuring they would not be stolen or misused.

In return the three outside powers promised that Ukraine would not be subject to aggression or economic coercion and that its borders would be inviolable.

Ukraine had no need for doomsday weapons and gave them up gladly.

Memories of the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986 were still raw.

Boris Yeltsin’s Russia was friendly in those days.

Nobody had heard of a quiet bureaucrat in St Petersburg called Vladimir Putin with close links to the city’s organised crime groups. Nobody knew that he would one day rule Russia.

Even in 1994, Ukrainians wanted to be safe not sorry.

Soviet rule had been nightmarish: millions perished in the artificial famine of the 1930s.

After the war, Stalin crushed resistance with brutal repressions.

So Ukraine sought solemn assurances that in exchange for abandoning nuclear weapons, the country’s borders would be inviolable.

Imagine if the Ukrainian negotiators could have seen the news of the past few days.

The Budapest Memorandum has been flagrantly breached by Russia.

First by a series of targeted and crippling trade sanctions against Ukraine to prevent it signing a deal with the European Union, which is backed by a clear majority of the population.

Second, by backing the regime’s crackdown in the capital Kiev. And then with the occupation of Crimea.

The Russians broke their word – but so did we. Britain has spinelessly funked even mild measures such as visa bans and asset freezes to punish the Kremlin for its behavior.

Would the Ukrainian government of the day have blithely given up their nuclear weapons in exchange for our solemn assurances had they known Russia would attack and we would do nothing?

Of course not. Mr Putin has learned that aggression goes unpunished. Which country will he menace next?”

THE PROGRESSIVE’S 8-STEP GUIDE TO FOREIGN POLICY VIA STRONG DIPLOMACY:

1. Announce that the country’s behavior is unacceptable.

2. Should they continue behaving unacceptably, we tell them that their unacceptable behavior cannot be allowed to continue.

3. Should the unacceptable behavior continue anyway, then we tell them that we really mean what we said.

4. If they’re still behaving unacceptably, then we remind them that we really, REALLY do mean what we said, and that we’re not just saying that.

5. Should this result in only more unacceptable behavior, we tell them that this time, we’re serious.

6. If that doesn’t work (and it usually doesn’t, but we Progs pride ourselves on retaining faith in the inherent goodness of our fellow man and our own ability to make others see reason), then we inform them that we may have to consider scheduling an appointment to go to Geneva, where we will meet with fellow peace-loving Progs to discuss the possibility of approaching the U.N. with a request for permission to advise the offending country that we may have to impose sanctions.

7. If that doesn’t work, then with the help of our minions in the news media, we distract the masses from what’s going on with cute photo-ops like the creation of yet another White House initiative like My Brother’s Keeper, and speeches by the First Lady on the crisis of too many moms clogging the grocery aisles as they furrow their brows over nutrition labels and agonize over whether a product has too much or too little riboflavin.

8. If, by this time, the offending country’s unacceptable behavior has spread and can no longer be contained, go back to Step 1 and start over, and have faith that this time, we’ll get different results. -

What an idiot. I wish he’d explain how Putin’s chess game strategically led to the pro-Russian president forced out of the capital and into hiding in the east like a common criminal, while the ruling, interim government is controlled by pro-Western factions that favor closer alignment with the EU. This isn’t a Russian victory, but a deeply humiliating and embarrassing disaster in Russia’s back yard, an area that’s the political and cultural foundation of the Russian state.

Putin’s attempt to recreate the Soviet empire threatens not only Ukraine, but the peace of Europe. Our supine reaction is suicidally risky.

You clearly have little to no understanding of Russian intentions and motivations. If Putin had any intention of re-creating the old Soviet empire, why did he acquiesce to the Baltic states joining NATO? It’s not so simple.

If Putin had any intention of re-creating the old Soviet empire, why did he acquiesce to the Baltic states joining NATO? It’s not so simple.

bayam on March 2, 2014 at 7:45 PM

Because in 2004, with the seven Baltic states joined NATO, Putin was running for his second term as President. He won because of a growing Russian economy, despite the high casualties of his military campaign against Chechnya (which he declared ended only 2 years earlier) and its terrorist attacks on Moscow. His own party didn’t achieve dominance in Parliament until 2007.

In short, because he was still weak politically and sapped of strength militarily, and 2004 was not the time to reclaim the Baltic states. This is a man who knows how to bide his time.

Wonder if Putin would acquiesce to Ukraine joining NATO, oh, about now? Or any time while he remains in power. Ukraine’s time is up.

Has anyone asked Hagel if maybe his plan to gut the military is a bit premature?

3-Dimensional Marbles.

Ben Hur on March 2, 2014 at 8:13 PM

Well, I think Putin is playing chess, and I think we’re playing marbles. And I don’t think it’s even close.

Rogers isn’t wrong (this time) but he’s as bloody useless as Issa. Go back and watch Kelly gobsmack him during the interview about Benghazi when he essentially tried paint the attacks as sporadic and intermittent, despite eyewitness testimony to the contrary to HIS committee, as revealed by Rep. Nunes (especially around 3:55). Talk about a deer-in-the-headlight look…

Typo, or am I missing something …

I thought there were only three Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

We’ve come a long way since the rugged, independent American and now present this prancing, embarrassing fairy to the world as our leader. This pampered princess has set the world ablaze, but only frets that gheys aren’t getting their cake and “people of color” need a bigger piece of the taxpayer pie. As much as I despise this worm, he’s just a personification of what America has become.

I’m with wolly4321. I’m glad my dad, who spent WWII with OSS, defending the country that lovingly adopted him, isn’t alive to see this.

Why does no one ever mention Mike Rogers for 2016? I think he’s brighter than most of the dim bulbs up there.

Enlighten me, please. Thanks in advance.
