Ambassador Power: Daniel Pearl decapitation part of a “cycle of violence,” or something

posted at 10:41 am on February 24, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Er … this is so inexplicable that it almost defies analysis. Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, went to an interview with Mubarak Ali Gilani at a restaurant in Karachi, Pakistan, but was kidnapped on the way. He was brutally murdered and decapitated by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man behind the 9/11 terrorist plot. The video of the murder was sent out immediately as a demand to free all of the detainees at Gitmo, whom KSM would shortly join.

Late last night, for no particular reason — Pearl was murdered on February 1, 2002 — US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power sent out this tweet, which I’ve screen-capped rather than embedded in case it gets deleted:

power-tweetWhat “cycles of violence” does Power mean?  Did the Wall Street Journal declare war on Pakistan? Was Pearl planting roadside bombs in Karachi? Do interviews that allow terrorists to present their agenda count as “violence” that adds to these “cycles of violence” to which Power refers? And what is meant by “individual accountability” in this case? KSM has been in Gitmo for more than a decade, and thanks to this administration’s actions has yet to answer for his crimes in the military-commission system that Congress has repeatedly authorized. If they want to pursue “individual accountability,” then they could quit trying to move KSM to federal court and get his trial under way.

Twitchy has a couple of good round-ups on social-media reaction, but we need to see some media reaction.  The White House should be pressed to explain this. This looks like a desperate attempt to draw some moral equivalency between Pearl and his butchers, and between terrorism and anything that opposes it. If this is the quality of American diplomacy, then we need a bigger housecleaning than just getting rid of the incompetent bundler-bunglers we’ve seen at recent Senate confirmation hearings. This is just appalling.

Update: My friend John Hinderaker pondered the meaning of the tweet:

I saw this on Twitter late last night and pondered it for a while. What is it supposed to mean? I have no clue. Power refers to “individual accountability.” If by that she means tracking down and killing the people who slit Daniel Pearl’s throat, I am with her all the way. But somehow, I don’t think that is the accountability she has in mind.

Well, we’ve already done that. Pakistan hung one of the perpetrators, and we have the mastermind in Gitmo. But John is merely warming up:

What cycles of violence is Daniel Pearl’s murder a “reminder” of? Is Power suggesting that Pearl’s murder was carried out in retaliation against prior killings of al Qaeda terrorists by Wall Street Journal reporters? I don’t think so…but what “cycles of violence” she associates with Pearl’s beheading at the hands of terrorists, I can’t imagine. …

I think Samantha Power–who among fans of the Obama administration is considered a deep thinker!–suffers from the muddle-headedness that typifies most liberals. She can’t face the truth, which is that radical Muslims are an existential threat to civilization and freedom, with whom we can never be reconciled. So in lieu of truth, she emits platitudes about “cycles of violence” and so on. The sad reality is that her boss, Barack Obama, who has appointed her to a series of high-profile foreign policy positions, has just as incoherent a view of the world as she does.

Exactly.

Update: Walkback:

Daniel Pearl did do great and courageous work at the WSJ, but let’s remember why he was in Karachi – he was following up leads about links between shoe-bomber Richard Reid and al-Qaeda.  He wasn’t satisfied with just “individual accountability,” but wanted to expose the reach of the terrorist network responsible for the terrorist attempt. Even Power’s walkback is nonsense on stilts.

Samantha Power Dives Deep…Into Incoherence
http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2014/02/samantha-power-dives-deep-into-incoherence.php
Then there is “reconciliation.” Reconciliation between whom and whom? Al Qaeda and the families of people murdered by al Qaeda? Has anyone seen any sign of a longing for “reconciliation” among Muslim terrorists?

And finally we have the “cycles of violence” that need to be “broken.” What cycles of violence is Daniel Pearl’s murder a “reminder” of? Is Power suggesting that Pearl’s murder was carried out in retaliation against prior killings of al Qaeda terrorists by Wall Street Journal reporters? I don’t think so…but what “cycles of violence” she associates with Pearl’s beheading at the hands of terrorists, I can’t imagine.

Your proof to substantiate these as fact as opposed to your opinions are lacking.

She eviscerated Clinton on Rwanda.

Here’s the link to her September 2001 article in The Atlantic, Bystander’s to Genocide – perhaps you can provide some quotes where she ‘eviscerates’ Bill Clinton. In the section “A Continuum of Guilt” she doesn’t seem to come close to ‘evisceration’ – but employs a common tactic of moral equivalency by comparing Clinton’s Administration’s policies to George W. Bush’s when it comes to ‘genocide’.

She is not motivated by politics.

On what basis is that statement made? Projection? Wishful thinking? She’s been a foreign policy adviser to Barack Obama since at least 2005 – and a loyal supporter of Barack Obama and shares his ideological viewpoints.

Oh, and those ‘wild accusations’ have been substantiated by her own words / quotes via links. It’s clear what your motivation is.

To be honest, at first I did not know much about her as folks like her do not frequent my blue/white collar sphere of influence. After some research I saw her as well educated, Irish like me, and lacking in real world political experience. Sometimes OTJ training is fine and I wanted to see how she performed. Underwhelming is the best I can give her and if I was her boss I would tell her to step up her game. I do not think she needs to be fired, but she does need some support.

From my father-in-law being head of public relations for a large government agency, I do have some working knowledge of her job requirement and she needs better communication skills. I assumed she has those skills and maybe this is a onetime miss-step. I hope so, as she ain’t a professor anymore teaching young adults, but is playing in shark infested waters where you A Game is a minimum requirement.

Don’t you want our guys to be their best all the time? I am old and I see no good in hiding problems. You identify, correlate, work up a solution, implement said solution, identify metrics for judging and goals for success, evaluate, and make changes. Never one to hide a problem.

RedNewEnglander on February 24, 2014 at 4:17 PM

Right now, most of the liberal v conservative debate occurring under this topic is a sideshow. Let’s stick with a valid central premise.

Power believes that there is a moral equivalency between the Islamic and Israeli actions and reactions in this conflict. That is a criminal shame. Israel repeatedly gives ground on issues, in the hope that someday it will mean peaceful coexistence in the region. And when attacked, they retaliate. But NOT IN KIND. Islam attacks Israel indiscriminately, killing civilians over military or government at about a 50:1 ratio. Israel responds by surgically targeting those who ordered such attacks, or appropriate militant terrorist leaders, striving for as little collateral damage as possible.

I don’t care if you don’t “support Israel”, though you should. I care that you honestly evaluate the facts.

Daniel Pearl was murdered because he was an easy target, and a Jewish American. Not because he was a spy, not because he had done anything wrong. He was murdered to terrorize.

For an American “diplomat” to claim that this heinous event should remind us to try and “reconcile” with those who will never stop hating the U.S. or Israel, is a failure of the highest order. Each “cycle of violence” (the statement itself is a massive untruth) is initiated by the Islamists, with no diplomatic or geopolitical objective other than advancing their worldview over any other, specifically that of the Jews. Israel responds because they have the natural right to do so, and they refuse to submit.

Ok, trolls and those who claim not to be trolls, debunk the above.

SweetSensationalist on February 24, 2014 at 12:10 PM

It does sound like she tries to say “both sides does it”, so maybe they are about to present some “peace deal” to terrorize Israel with.

Or she just cant contain all the stupid in her head and just had to let some of it out.

Okay, that’s the context; not “out of the blue”, maybe not even a set-up (although that’s been known to happen, e.g., Stephanopolous in the debates and Lerner on the IRS imbroglio); however, that doesn’t explain why she walked out into this particular minefield.
***

Postmodern gibberish defies interpretation by design.

RadClown on February 24, 2014 at 11:11 AM

True; and that may be all it was.
Substantively, however, we might have more to examine:

What “cycles of violence” does Power mean?

AFAICT, there’s some blaming of Daniel Pearl in the mode of liberals’ self-flagellation over “collective guilt”, we are all guilty, even Daniel Pearl is guilty for something, as part of the collective.

Reminds me of the protester interviews where you ask them what they’re protesting and they respond with nonsense, and not only can’t elaborate on what they said, or back it up with facts, but they have precious little idea what they’re talking about.

LashRambo on February 24, 2014 at 11:26 AM

Daniel Pearl never should have been Jewish and American?

What?

I still want to hear from Power how it ends the cycle of violence to attack and depose a dictator who previously disarmed to stop us from attacking and deposing him. Warning to other tyrants: don’t give up your bombs.

PattyJ on February 24, 2014 at 11:46 AM

Any commentary about ‘cycles of violence’ by this administration is code for “American brutality and repression began this totally predictable and excusable violent reaction to kill American(s).”
xNavigator on February 24, 2014 at 3:47 PM

Oh, you know the one. Where they kill all non-Muslims, and some non-Muslims don’t just meekly submit to being killed.

You can understand why that would provoke another round of violoce.

Unless you’re some kind of theocratic crusader or something.

There Goes the Neighborhood on February 24, 2014 at 12:59 PM

Power is as anti-Semitic as they come, what she means by cycle of violence, is the Jewish oppression of Palestinians and the Islamic retaliation for said fictional oppression.

oscarwilde on February 24, 2014 at 4:47 PM

According to liberals a “Cycle of Violence” is when anyone defends themselves against Islamofascism. If only we would just accept Allah then everything would be great. Hopefully we will one day see that it is our fault after all…

Micah68 on February 24, 2014 at 11:46 AM

oldennis on February 24, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Oh, it makes perfect sense. She’s expressing pride and gratitude to Daniel Pearl’s parents for not strapping on bandoliers and heading off to Karachi to hunt terrorists themselves.

On second thought, that makes NO sense.

stuiec on February 24, 2014 at 1:24 PM

I agree with stuiec.
* * *
This is the analysis that most impressed me:

Right now, most of the liberal v conservative debate occurring under this topic is a sideshow. Let’s stick with a valid central premise.

Power believes that there is a moral equivalency between the Islamic and Israeli actions and reactions in this conflict. That is a criminal shame. …

I certainly hope the lecture was more coherent than the tweet or clarifications. My first thought was that she was intoxicated at the time.

talkingpoints on February 24, 2014 at 6:30 PM

On Powers herself, and her statements, complete with walkbacks, here is some excellent commentary from one of our newly-enrolled long-time lurkers:

Very bush league and she never should have sent out such a muddled message. She is on the job 24/7/365 and should perform like a professional at all times. Her performance is unacceptable and she needs to step up her game. Don’t care how many books she has written and such…..she is in the big leagues.

HonestLib on February 24, 2014 at 12:08 PM

My insight to her job comes from my father-in-law who was head of public relations for a very large government agency. No matter the political affilition, her lack of abilty to send out a clear message is professional failure on the world stage. If she meant to say this with the blessings of the White House……!!!!

HonestLib on February 24, 2014 at 12:20 PM

HonestLib on February 24, 2014 at 3:26 PM

Then you’re not an honest liberal, because an honest liberal would have to admit that the liberals in federal office are lying about so many issues facing our country the White House has a gigantic wooden monument growing out of it toward space.

xNavigator on February 24, 2014 at 3:47 PM

Toward space? It tipped over Guam before poking the moon.

Hard to answer your statement “so many issues” but how about the lies President Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Susan Rice told about the stupid video? Four good Americans died and what did the do? They lied and I have been very vocal about that one. Seems like you are new also new as I jut started noticing your nic……Been lurking since 2007.

Logic problem with Ms. Powers even in context.
Dialogue will not help when dealing with religious fanatics, as they do not respond to reason.

There is no cycle of violence, there is only an attempt of Muslim fanatics to kill all who do not share their particular beliefs (including other Muslim sects).

Too many of today’s Leftists grew up being taught “history” in the public schools via the “writings” of one Howard Zinn. I’m no Spring Chicken myself, but even some in my generation were force-fed Zinn thru their public school years.

In fact, in my “later” public school years in the Blue City of New York and then the Blue State of Connecticut, we never saw one Howard Zinn text. Curious.

Zinn was a Jew, but he questioned Israel’s right to exist. Which is what many of your younger Leftist acquaintances believe like the Gospel.

Cycle of Violence? What does this mean? That before a group of muslims sawed Daniel Pearl’s head off, Daniel Pearl, and/or someone like him, had sawed some muslim’s head off? Will this depraved indifference Obama ambassador Powell say in her dying moment, if some saws her head off, “This is all part of a cycle of violence”? What a depraved and degenerate low life.

VorDaj on February 24, 2014 at 9:05 PM

I was part of a team that downloaded, translated, and edited that video for air on public TV. It was, by the murderers own words, a training and motivational video for other to do the same. The first, and so beheadings began to spread.

Original footage was so gruesome and cruel, it brought me to tears during the process. I’m sure she saw the original and read the transcript. How dare she lie like that!

Reprehensible regime.

They asked Daniel Pearl, “Was your Father a Jew?” “Was you Mother a Jew?” “Are you a Jew?” He answered yes to all 3 so they had no choice but to bring out the saw. Its classic progressive m.o.
Only they didn’t need to question them, it was clear to the leftists based on color. No choice but to get out the rope.
This p.o.s. is the cycle of violence.

Correction: @DanielPearlFNDN’s work is a reminder that individual accountability + reconciliation are required to break cycles of violence.

— Samantha Power (@AmbassadorPower) February 24, 2014

As I said last night, the men who murdered Daniel Pearl did so because “he was an American, and most of all, because he was a Jew.”

— Samantha Power (@AmbassadorPower) February 24, 2014

Daniel Pearl was murdered by an off-shoot organization in Pakistan of al Qaeda.

To bring al Qaeda to account we must make all of those inside the organization as well as all of its supporters accountable.

That is the only way to bring ‘individual accountability’ to bear. Once you do that you can be ‘reconciled’ by making sure that these individuals are dead as they are operating outside the rules of civilized warfare by the GC, and operate as spies and saboteurs by war definition under it. That is a piece of international law the US has signed on to. There is a court martial available for spies and saboteurs. The conviction has a summary sentence that cannot be appealed and is applied immediately.

That is how you bring ‘individual accountability’ to the organization and supporters of those who do such things. They become ‘reconciled’ with civilized humanity by then being absent from it in a permanent way. That is the international law under the GC. If you would like to apply the Pirate Codes to them, then please say so, Ambassador Power, it would be refreshing to have someone who actually understands international and national law say these things.

Too bad you aren’t able to do so. You are just another representative of ‘Smart Diplomacy’ which has failed wherever it has been tried like in Egypt, Libya, Syria, Ukraine…
