Video: Detroit home invasion doesn’t go as planned

posted at 4:01 pm on February 20, 2014 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate, via the IJR and Reason, a case study in why Detroit PD Chief James Craig wants the locals to own guns.

Then again, I suppose if we banned the Second Amendment, these young punks wouldn’t have had a gun in the first place. Right?

An armed populace saves lives, and almost always at the expense of the bad guys. It is a God given right (NOT a gummint dispensation) guaranteed (so far) by the Constitution of self defense. The leftie idjit, I’m sure, would rather the mom be raped and killed, her children sold into slavery and all their stuff be dispensed to their thuggish pals than have another eeeeevil gun in the hands of the law abiding public. Hi-Point Carbine

A lot of gun snobs badmouth these rifles, but the people who own them tell a different story. They think these carbines are simple, reliable and cheap. They shoot several calibers of pistol ammo, so you can use the same ammo as your pistol. You can easily add accessories like a laser sight or flashlight, a big deal on today’s market. As you can see, they will still function when they are obviously not properly maintained.

They’re selling like hotcakes.

novaculus on February 20, 2014 at 4:45 PM

Man, but that is one ugly rifle.

Personally, I keep a Schmidt-Rubin 1889 under the bed for home defence — had to buy a longer bed to get the rifle to fit under it completely.

I’m not a gun snob but you get what you pay for. I’ve shot the Hi Point pistols and they are hit and miss, if it’s all you can afford then ok but a 12 gauge pump will go for same amount of money and they always work.

Bishop on February 20, 2014 at 4:50 PM

Let me ask this though: is there some tactical advantage to using a 9mm carbine? I always thought that if you’re going to use a pistol round, you might as well just use a handgun. I own an AR “pistol” (basically a carbine). If you were going to go for a carbine, why not go for an AR?

You’re a monster. Only a monster would want to see three home invaders prevail against a mom and her kids.

Over the weekend, three defensive gun uses made the local news in my city: a liquor store clerk killed a robber, a man used his .22 to save an elderly woman from a pit bull, and a man shot some burglars in his garage.

People like you root for the criminal. You are an enemy of all that’s decent.

Bishop on February 20, 2014 at 4:50 PM

I haven’t even examined a Hi-Point pistol closely, but I’ve heard mixed reviews. Seems if you shoot ammo they like they are good enough, though. I’ve talked to a handful of people who own the carbines, one female, and they all like them.

Let me ask this though: is there some tactical advantage to using a 9mm carbine? I always thought that if you’re going to use a pistol round, you might as well just use a handgun. I own an AR “pistol” (basically a carbine). If you were going to go for a carbine, why not go for an AR?

WhatSlushfund on February 20, 2014 at 4:51 PM

The longer barrel will give a and extra couple of hundred FPS velocity, so hits a bit harder and a bit longer effective range. Longer site radius (if using the stock sights) and shoulder stock mean a carbine is generally easier to shoot accurately than a pistol. The extra length can be a disadvantage indoors.

novaculus on February 20, 2014 at 5:08 PM

I’m confused. Why weren’t police there before the attempted break-in? Or at least in time to protect the mom and her kids? That is the liberal position, right? Call 911 and hide?

Oh, and I thought “thug” was unlawful speech. No?

BKeyser on February 20, 2014 at 5:08 PM

Flora Duh on February 20, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Flora Duh on February 20, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Nothing wrong with that revolver, if you can still handle the recoil.

You can’t let them get close enough to take it away from you.

There’s an old saw in CQB circles about the “21 foot rule”, the idea being that a threat can close a 21 foot gap before you can draw and fire a handgun, so you have to begin to draw before they get that close. Assuming you’re home and have the gun in hand, you must get off a shot, preferably at least two, before the threat can touch you.

novaculus on February 20, 2014 at 5:15 PM

WhatSlushfund on February 20, 2014 at 4:51 PM

Ya – I have a Draco AK “pistol” (7.62x39mm) – makes a REALLY big bang that you can feel within 30 feet and a big flame out of the barrel. Great if you want to put on a shock & awe show and maybe scare the he11 out of someone.
BUT – with no stock, those things are made to be fired from the hip – hard to hold up for long to look through the sights (so I put a barrel mounted laser on it), especially with a full 30 round mag in it – so if you actually need to hit someone, it’s not exactly the best home defense weapon.

dentarthurdent on February 20, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Flora Duh on February 20, 2014 at 5:09 PM

If you need a smaller handgun, I would still go with a revolver for a house gun. Check out the .32 Magnums and the .327 Magnums. Smaller gun, less recoil, and still plenty of energy delivered on target.

novaculus on February 20, 2014 at 5:21 PM

How about a S&W Model 60 – also a revolver, 5 shot instead of 6, also single/double action, can shoot .38 Special or .357 Magnum, and it’s 12 oz lighter than the Model 15 (about 2/3 the weight).
I have one of those, and it’s my favorite CCW.
Very easy to handle and smooth shooting gun.
I highly recommend them.

There’s also the even lighter weight Model 642 Lady Smith – .38 Special and +P only, 14.5 oz – so 1/3 the weight of your Model 15.
