Video: Venezuela seized CNN equipment as crackdown continues

posted at 2:01 pm on February 19, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

With the eyes of the world on the brutal crackdown on dissent in Venezuela, the regime of Nicolas Maduro decided to try to take a few of those eyes out of action. CNN reporter Karl Penhaul found himself staring down the barrel of a nickel-plated pistol, as plainclothes police confiscated his crew’s camera and transmission equipment. That forced him and his crew to find someplace else as a reporting center, taking them out of the center of the conflict:

Today the Maduro regime will haul opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez to court to face murder and terrorism charges for his role in supposedly inciting the protests:

Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez is set to appear in court Wednesday, a day after he turned himself in to authorities amid anti-government demonstrations in the country.

Charges against him include murder, terrorism and arson in connection with the protests, according to his party, Popular Will.

Lopez denies the accusations, the party said in a statement calling for witnesses of the protests to send their own accounts of what happened to be used in his defense.

“The last thing he said to me was for me to not forget what he is going through,” his wife, Lilian Tintori de Lopez said in an interview with CNN en Español. “Not forget that he is arrested for things that he has asked for: the liberation of political prisoners, liberation of students, no more oppression, no more violence.” …

Venezuelan protesters are demanding better security, an end to scarcities and protected freedom of speech.

The arraignment of Lopez provides an answer to those demands. Lopez was taken to a military prison, as Maduro described him as an agent of fascism while Maduro-supporting militias fired on unarmed protesters from motorcycles and on foot. What kind of liberty involves seizing cameras at gunpoint from foreign journalists?

Schadenfreude on February 19, 2014 at 2:14 PM

To say this is Fascism is to imply that it isn’t Socialism.

Maduro and his unlamented predecessor describe(d) themselves as a Socialists, so why not take their word for it and call them Socialists – rather than apply the “Fascist” epithet that Socialists pretend means “right wing”?

Are they self-described Socialists until they whip out the water canon, then they suddenly qualify as Fascists?

When it comes to reporting what is going on in other places I alway turn on CNN. They are the only ones doing it and I’ve never seen anything but plain reporting from them. They would have to have some kind of approval from the government to operate there and they do sometimes avoid saying certain things to avoid being thrown out. They would have to do that if reporting from Detroit or someplace in this country. Either that or you don’t get information out at all.

Pharaoh has already illegally investigated FNC reporter James Rosen. And tried to kick them out of the White House press pool. And send in FCC “monitors” to threaten broadcast licenses.

I’m sure Pharaoh will just shut them down soon. Because he can do whatever he wants.

The said thing is lots of people are rolling their eyes at this because of the complete absence of reporting on it here in the States. This, more than Ukraine and Syria and Iran et al, is the international story that should worry Americans, not only because of proximity but because of the paralells between how Chavez ran and what he did once in office and how Obama ran and what he did once in office.

Plus, Venezuela used to be a relatively decent place. Now they have no toilet paper and plain clothes police are executing protesters in teh streets. But does our POTUS or Dept of State care? Nope – that their buddies down there.

Of course the First Amendment referring to freedom of the Press does not apply in other countries.

Now imagine, as some progressive thinkers suggest, if it was decided that since the Constitution was written by a bunch of dead, white guys, that we should now ignore it and rely on popular democracy to check government actions. The presumption is that there will still be a respect for the freedom of the press… sure, when it suits the powers that be, whoever they are.
