Live video: Nine dead in Kiev as riots erupt in Ukraine

posted at 2:01 pm on February 18, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Ukraine erupted in violence today as the Euromaidan protests turned deadly. Nine people were killed as demonstrators attack the ruling party’s headquarters. Dozens more were injured in the violence:

At least nine people died Tuesday in protests in Kiev, seven of them civilians and two police, authorities said.

The casualties occurred after protesters set fire to the headquarters of the ruling Party of Regions and as violence roiled the capital for the first time in more than two weeks.

The opposition confirmed five of the deaths — three near parliament and two near a metro station; the Interior Ministry said a policeman died in an ambulance en route to a hospital.

Earlier, an opposition member of Ukraine’s parliament told CNN that three protesters had died and seven others were seriously injured during protests Tuesday in Kiev.

Speaking from the protesters’ medical facility outside the parliament building, Olesya Orobets said ambulances had been barred from the area.

Live video is streaming here:

Police moved in on protest positions as night fell, in what they called an anti-terrorism operation:

Ukrainian police are storming the main anti-government protest camp in the capital, Kiev.

Loud explosions are taking place, fireworks are being thrown and water cannon have been deployed.

During the day, at least nine people were killed, including two policemen, as protesters and security forces clashed in the worst violence in weeks.

Protesters are refusing to leave Independence Square, saying that “Ukraine is behind us … Ukraine’s future is behind us.” The armed conflict could spread to other cities, as the opposition has seized government buildings elsewhere. For the moment, though, it appears the violence is contained to Kiev.

Update: This YouTube video uploaded today depicts Ukrainian protesters singing the national anthem while riot police throw fire bombs in Kiev, according to Maxim Eristavi, a broadcaster in Kiev:

That sounds like someone is trying to orchestrate an overthrow because 14-17 year olds don’t behave that way without direction.

sharrukin on February 18, 2014 at 5:36 PM

Look up prior thread on this, one of the “opposition groups” is a Nazi style organization in Western Ukraine, Lvov region mostly. And McCain was there what, last month?, to distribute funds.

So, yes, WE are orchestrating this BS and paying for it.

If thats true then its a very bad idea. The last thing we need is a civil war in the Ukraine. or Russian troops moving in to restore order. I am sure that idiot McCain has the same sort of illusions he had about Georgia.

Read latest here, directly from locals: http://www.from-ua.com/news/ea6a4942270a0.html

These “freedom loving” oppositioners are attacking each and every reporter there, beating them senseless and destroying equipment. OWS, anyone?

As one the locals commented at the bottom of the page, for over 2 months cops and military have been absorbing attacks by stones, baseball bats, Molotov cocktails, etc, without reacting. 8 cops dead (including 6 just today) and almost 200 seriously hurt.

Had same thing happened here in USA or Germany, they would have been dealt pretty harshly.

I find the statement on point and indicative of rather very biased reporting on the events in the West. And sadly, our tax dollars are paying for all of these deaths and destruction. “Freedom lovers” are now setting buildings on fire, cars, etc. Anything they can destroy before Berkut does the job. Berkut is actually equipped with AK-47s, this should also point out just how reasonable they are in trying to get the job done with the least lethality.

And should I point out the obvious and ask which language this local site is in? So much for Western polls.

The singing sounds too close to be the protesters. I’m thinking it’s more likely that the cops are the ones singing.

You tell me. There is NOTHING to gain there for us.

To nukemhill: No, that’s “freedom lovers” singing, Ukrainian anthems. I am surprised they haven’t started on “Alte Kameraden” yet.

Riddick,

Every time there is a post about what is going on in Ukraine, you bombard the comments with your anti-Ukraine, pro-Russian points of view. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, I have family in Kiev and I am getting first hand reports which don’t jive with your statements. Despite the fact that this started after the failed EU deal, this really has little to do with an east versus west push inside Ukraine. The fact is the majority of Ukrainians are fed up with the endemic level of corruption at every level of government (which has only worsened under the current regime).

If anyone wants some insight into what is really fueling this, read this op-ed from a Ukrainian journalist (yes I know it’s the New York Times but read it anyway – It is very moving and inspiring:

While anything is possible, I just see him as being a guy with a definite point of view. I have nothing to say that he’s either right or wrong, so I stay out of it. I read him ‘cuz I enjoy the perspective, but that’s all it is to me… one person’s point of view.

I too have people in Ukraine. The ethnic Russian Crimea. I am told that the civilian population in Crimea are preparing to protect any government buildings that the “demonstrators” want to try and take over in Sevastopol.

I read a comment on another site: “Putin says that he’ll have more flexibility after the Olympics.”

He sure will. My guess is Russian tanks will be asked by the Ukrainian president to enter Ukraine to help deal with those who wish to be allied with the west and real freedom.

My guess is Russian tanks will be asked by the Ukrainian president to enter Ukraine to help deal with those who wish to be allied with the west and real freedom.

In my opinion those Russian tanks you speak of would be met with flowers and cheers by much of the population in Crimea. They consider themselves to be Russian. Their language is Russian. Their culture is Russian.

Kaffa on February 18, 2014 at 7:50 PM

So let the east join with Russia and the rest of Ukraine can be free. In ten years we will see who made the right choice.

It is more complicated than that and both you and I know it. And, I am sure that some Ukrainian who are Russian would welcome Putin’s tanks and a crackdown on those who are Ukrainian who wish to be aligned with the west. The whole mess stinks and could break out into a civil war, even if Putin does not intervene with Russian tanks. I will pray for those who wish to be aligned to the west and real freedom.

Just like when Iran’s populace rose up to fight for their freedom, Obama has turned his back on innocents being abused, injured, and killed. If they want any help from this administration they should claim to be Al Qaeda or Muslim Brotherhood members…Obama would rush to their aid in a heartbeat!

You seem to be a newbie here and haven’t seen my posts for a few years now? On various subjects?

Interesting comment. You have obviously missed prior post where I stated I am a Jew and have no horse in this game. A refugee from USSR, a while ago, so what I post on Eastern Europe is WAY MORE ACCURATE than any of you hacks here can ever fathom. My posts here are based on A) actual, FACTUAL reports from the homeland posted on various local sites and B) living in the “freedom loving” Western Ukraine city of Lvov where I learned to here “kike” plenty and often from early age. And felt just how these “freedom lovers” were Nazis reincarnated. Do you guys know they welcomed Germans in WWII with open arms? And volunteered for police forces oppressing and exterminating locals? And then volunteered for prison guard duty in concentration camps?

Are you aware that entire Ukraine was SOLD, VOLUNTARILY, by Mazepa, to Russia in 17th century? And that Russia has expended MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS of LIVES to defend this land AS THEIR OWN since? So, tell me, whose land is it really?

These are the people you are defending now? Learn FACTUAL HISTORY before making simply stupid remarks and guesses about other posters.

As to someone here now quoting NY Times as “proof”, how convenient to quote Times, which has been nothing but liberal/communist in their views. If anything, that should actually be a clear indication on how things stand in Ukraine these days.

Also, shame that same NYT is not reporting that LE troops are only using “traumatic” gas guns firing rubber bullets while “freedom lovers” are using real guns. You guys call it an even fight? I am more than surprised LE forces taking this crap for so long and cannot really defend their lives. against live ammo.

This is what HA has evolved to? Using NYT as proof? When NYT only employs liberal hacks? Wow. How low have we gone.

Any reason you experts are not asking just why is it that these “freedom lovers” are attacking every blogger and journalist they find? One was killed just yesterday, a good number of others were beaten and equipment destroyed. Why would these “freedom lovers” NOT WANT their efforts for “freedom” documented and reported on? Ever think of that?

Do you guys do your own thinking or just like liberals tend to post someone’s BS?
