Gallup: Joblessness now top priority for Americans

posted at 8:01 am on February 18, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The Obama administration keeps bragging about the falling topline unemployment rate, but their audience has not been convinced of an improvement. According to Gallup’s latest survey on priorities for Americans, joblessness has now become the top issue — exceeding the economy and even dissatisfaction with Congress and government:

Americans have a new No. 1 problem. Nearly one in four Americans mention jobs and unemployment as the most important problem facing the country, up from 16% in January. The government and politicians had topped the list since the government shutdown in October.

Prior to last fall, either jobs or the economy had led the “most important problem” list going back to February 2008, and these two have regained their top spots in the Feb. 6-9 poll.

Healthcare continues to rank among the top problems, with 15% naming it, unchanged from January. Mentions of the federal debt/budget deficit are stable at 8%, despite Congress’ increasing the debt ceiling in February.

Although Barack Obama often “pivots” to the economy, usually when his approval numbers start to fall, the White House has not sustained any economic policy except that which they implemented at the beginning of the Obama presidency. The stimulus turned five years old yesterday, and unemployment is still at the top of this list, followed by the economy — and combined they account for 43% of the responses. That tells us a lot more about the “success” of the stimulus than the jobless rate, which has become unmoored from its historical track thanks to a sharp decline in the workforce participation rate.

Instead, the White House has spent the last few months talking about “income inequality” and immigration. Those priorities account for 12% of the electorate, if one takes the 3% for both “lack of money” and “poverty” and combine it with the 6% for “immigration/illegal aliens.” Even health care only gets 15%, roughly the same percentage of Americans who were uninsured for any reason in 2009.

Obama may want to talk about immigration and income inequality, but most Americans want to talk about getting back to work and having a growth economy. Republicans had better pay attention to voters rather than get caught up in Obama’s non-sequiturs.

Speaking of the jobless rate, John Crudele made headlines last year when he accused the Census Bureau of tampering with its numbers just before the 2012 election. Yesterday, Crudele elaborated on the point, and says his sources indicate the problem was broader than his first report indicated, and may involve the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well (via Jeff Dunetz):

In late August 2011, a manila envelope containing evidence of falsified data was sent to Keith Hall, who was then in charge of the BLS. “The Philadelphia Regional office [of Census] … engaged in a cover-up after it was reported that members of its staff falsified data in an effort to meet goals,” said the anonymous letter, a copy of which I have in front of me.

The letter identified the two supervisors who arranged the cover-up.

“In an effort to satisfy the sponsor [the BLS] … the numbers were literally made up,” said the tipster.

The BLS never acted on the letter. And that’s ironic because Hall, who was pushed out of the Labor Department in 2012, had been skeptical of the truthfulness of the BLS’s jobless numbers.

I interviewed Hall last July for this column, and he said at the time that the unemployment rate was “misleadingly low.” However, back then Hall — who is now at George Mason University — was attributing the misrepresentation to statistical anomalies in the way the unemployment rate is calculated and not outright fraud.

I asked Hall Monday if he remembers receiving an envelope containing evidence that data was being falsified. He didn’t. “I would have remembered that,” he said.

Did the envelope get lost in the mail? The tipster had a tracer on it through the Postal Service. Did someone else read the note, which, admittedly, was a little confusing, and choose to ignore it?

Crudele notes that the House Oversight Committee has opened an investigation into the falsification allegations, as has the Inspector General at Commerce, which has responsibility for Census (BLS is in Labor, and Census conducts surveys for them). He also believes that the US Attorney in Philadelphia may be conducting a preliminary review of the case, too. We’ll see if anything comes of this, but even the numbers we have show a population with a serious and chronic joblessness problem, despite the topline jobless rate of 6.6%.

Well it is for my family as my spouse is still looking for a job. He was also denied unemployment benefits without explanation so we are a little nervous at this point. When the economy sucks few employers are willing to hire analysts and project managers. Few companies are even pushing new projects or expanding.

Like starve and freeze to death in this endless time of global warming. Where we live the winter generally hovers around the low 30s and dips into the 20s and teens for a couple of week in Jan. This year I’m not sure it has gotten out of the 20s and we wake up to single digit temps every morning since mid Nov. I experience -16 for the first time in my life and more below zero temps this year than I remember in all my previous years. It’s freaking cold out there and we are getting more snow today. I remember always wondering if we would have a white Xmas and this year I’m wondering if we will ever see the ground again.

One thing I cannot get my fellow Libs to understand is that labour costs are the number one cost to most companies. Raise my costs (could be taxes, labour costs, materials cost) and I have three options (1) raise prices (yea right in this market) (2) reduce MY income (not if at all possible as I assume 100% of the risk) or (3) reduce costs which includes labour costs.

The only cost I can control in any significant way is through reducing labour costs. Due to the ACA, this is what I am having to do as my monthy health care preimums are now $30,625 for 49 employees. That has doubled since 2007. When my employees ask for a raise I have to take into account this increase. Or I reduce staff and spread the workload around.

Hey Libby, invest your own capital and run a company and hire some folks, then get back to me on the other issues. It ain’t easy down here in the trenches. Under President George W. Bush and a Republican Congress, the Employment-Population Ratio never dropped below 62.0%, even in the aftermath of the Dot Com Bust and the 9/11 attacks.

The 2003 Bush Tax Cuts (which lowered tax rates for all who pay taxes) turned the economy around and led to significantly higher employment and revenues. Rates went down, revenues went up… FY 2007 revenues were 44% larger than FY 2003 revenues.

The last month of a Republican House, Republican Senate, and Republican President, December 2006, the Employment-Population Ratio was 63.4%.

THAT is what Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the rest of their Congressional Democrat peers inherited when they took control of Congress on 1/3/2007.

Democrats inherited a GOOD economy on 1/3/2007, abruptly halted the recovery by introducing and passing a bill to raise the minimum wage three times in three years, then drove the economy into a ditch in FY 2008 & 2009, largely due to their refusal to heed Republican warnings of problems at Fannie & Freddie (Dems accused Republicans of racism… a “political lynching of Franklin Raines”, and insisted that there were not any “safety and soundness issues” at Fannie & Freddie).

Democrat majorities inherited a good economy, drove it into the ditch, and have left the economy in the ditch for FY 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014…

The Employment-Population Ratio, which never dropped below 62.0% under Bush with a GOP House & Senate, and which was 63.4% in December 2006, has now been below 59% for 53 consecutive months.

From Jan 1995 to Dec 2006, Republican majorities averaged 63.3% employment over those 144 consecutive months, and ended slightly above average at 63.4%.

If Democrats had simply maintained the employment level they inherited from the outgoing Republican majority, we would have had 63.4% employment over the last 85 months.

I’ve run the numbers, looking at both the Employment-Population Ratio and Civilian Noninstitutional Population, and found that in their slightly more than 7 years of majority control, Democrats have been responsible for a loss of over 60 Million “job years” and counting!

HonestLib on February 18, 2014 at 8:51 AM

Indeed.

It is a FACT that each of the last three times that Democrat majorities raised the minimum wage (7/2007, 7/2008, 7/2009) the Employment-Population Ratio went down.

Democrats speak of “giving America a raise”, but the reality is that raising the minimum wage to $10.10/hr would give many Americans a Pink Slip.

lynncgb on February 18, 2014 at 10:01 AM

Don’t ask me as I need the same type of help!

Main problem I see when talking with the type of Liberal you describe is that they lack “common sense” and for a lack of words a real life “baseline” to judge results. To sprinkle a little more thought on that first sentence, most Liberals do not understand how to manage risk without a safety net. Thus, they try to eliminate risk and not manage it; which leads to top down collective group think. Don’t get me wrong, the folks I am talking about are very very bright and well meaning.

To me what is common sense? That is when experience runs head long into book knowledge and something of value has been learned. Sad to say, but the last 40 years I have seen my Liberal cohorts real life experiences become very narrow. I am not talking about blue collar Democrat voters, what little there is anymore. For example, they can tell you all day long how to build a village, but give them a speed square they just stare at you with a blank look. Thus, their decision making tends to based on feelings “book knowledge” and not hard won experience. Put it another way, their gantt chart would have all kinds of critical paths, but they would be the wrong paths. They would need the common sense folks to fix the mess as they run to the next project. Don’t get me wrong, they are good at a lot of things, but not those things based in my definition of common sense. My liberal cohorts don’t appreciate my blue collar experience, oh they like it when I build them a deck or fence or such, but those are services they purchase.

Need to stop as I can’t say stuff in few words. In summary, when I talk with my elite Liberal cohorts I NEVER get into the weeds; I keep the conversation at the 30,000 foot level (so to speak). It also helps to let their talking down to me roll off my back. Ego is a big part of being a Liberal. Since I am a pilot and used to hanging out with them, I am used to big egos! To be honest, I gots me some of that ego stuff also.

Fenris on February 18, 2014 at 10:42 AM

Hey, I am not here to bash conservatives so I will be careful in my answer. In the 1980’s my living was selling tax shelters due to the favorable “at risk rules” and the ability to offset specific passive losses against ordinary income. The tax reform act of 1986 put me out of business in one day. My fault for not seeing it coming, but if I had to base my voting on which President’s party was in power I guess I would never vote for a Republican. From my business stand point they are all the same.

Nice dodge of your question, eh? Chuckle!!

Del Dolemonte on February 18, 2014 at 12:08 PM

It is simply about math. The nadir of unemployment during Obama’s Presidency came in December 2009–only 137,792,000 million people were working. The Obama folks use that number as their baseline for bragging about the “SIX MILLION” jobs created because, as of December 2013, 144,586,000 million are working. Only one little problem. More than 12 million people entered the labor market between Jan 2009 and Dec 2013. Just to keep pace with inflation the Obama stimulus program needed to generate at least 150,000 a month. If we had the same participation rate in December 2013 that existed in January 2009, the unemployment rate would be closer to 11%. That’s why people are not happy with the state of employment in America.

I wonder if all of those people who are asking that the focus be placed on reducing joblessness know this…

According to the WH, the ~$800B 2009 Stimulus Act was effectively free….

President Obama’s $763 billion stimulus was basically free, according to a White House report that said the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was so successful that it paid for itself.

“The Recovery Act had at most a minimal impact on the long-run debt — and the additional growth it produced likely further reduced or eliminated its cost,” the White House Council of Economic Advisers reported Monday, the fifth anniversary of the stimulus (original emphasis). “Traditional budget scoring indicates that, because the Recovery Act was temporary, its impact on the long-run fiscal situation was minimal, adding less than 0.1 percent of GDP to the 75-year fiscal gap. This calculation may overstate the true cost of the Recovery Act because the direct output gains it produced are sufficient to cover one-quarter of its projected cost.”

So what caused the debt to increase from about $10.2T on 1/20/09 to $17.3T today you economic whizzes?

Of course, this is also the same WH that spins similar falsehoods re jobs that ITGuy has highlighted

I wouldn’t call it a dodge, although you did mention only the President, while the Democrats controlled the House rather decisively. And they weren’t the pushovers the current Republican House is.

And I appreciate an actual answer rather than back and forth bashing, something you don’t often get our of the left wing.

But I guess I can’t feel too bad about a business entirely dependent on convoluted big government rules going out of business. In fact, it’s a good thing. For the greater good, as a lefty would say ;)

Murphy9 on February 18, 2014 at 3:29 PM

http://michellemalkin.com/2014/02/14/5-years-later-hows-that-wreckovery-working-out-for-ya/

On Feb. 17, 2009, President Obama promised the sun and the moon and the stars. That was the day, five years ago, when he signed the $800 billion “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.” President Modesty called it “the most sweeping economic recovery package in our history.” He promised “unprecedented transparency and accountability.” He claimed the spending would lift “two million Americans from poverty.” Ready for the reality smackdown?
The actual cost of the $800 billion pork-laden stimulus has ballooned to nearly $2 trillion. At the time of the law’s signing, the unemployment rate hovered near 8 percent. Obama’s egghead economists projected that the jobless rate would never rise above 8 percent and would plunge to 5 percent by December 2013. The actual jobless rate in January was 6.6 percent, with an abysmal labor force participation rate of 63 percent (a teeny uptick from December, but still at a four-decade low).
Five years after the Recovery Act, 10.2 million people are out of work. The number of able-bodied Americans who have simply given up looking for work or are “not in the labor force (but) who currently want a job” has exploded. By some estimates, a record 90 million-plus people are hopelessly sitting on the sidelines.
The unemployment rate for black Americans is 12.1 percent: nearly double the national rate. The Obama campaign excoriated President George W. Bush when it exceeded 10 percent under his watch. The black teen jobless rate is now a whopping record 38 percent. Some 50 million Americans remain below the poverty level. And 47 million are now on food stamps, a third more than when Obama first took office in the halcyon days of Hope and Change.
After $150 billion in stimulus and other spending on green energy boondoggles, what does the White House have to show for it? According to The Green Corruption Files blog, 32 Obama-backed environmental firms have gone bankrupt as of February 2014. These include crony-clogged Solyndra at a cost to taxpayers of $535 million; Beacon Power, $240 million; Abound Solar, $400 million-plus; Fisker Auto, $529 million; A123, $250 million; ECOtality, $100 million; and Ener1, $118.5 million. In addition, 22 other Obama green energy projects are now in dire financial trouble.
Unprecedented transparency? Section 1513 of the Recovery Act required the White House to submit a progress report every three months. Last year, blogger Doug Powers noted: “Under their own guidelines, the administration should have released 14 of these reports by now, but they’ve only submitted eight of them for public review.” Whatevs.
Obama promised an avalanche of “shovel-ready” jobs to build vital infrastructure before signing the Recovery Act. Instead, stimulus money went to wasteful makework and non-work, including: bridges to nowhere; a California project to photograph ants; a University of North Carolina computerized dance program; a privately owned martini bar and Brazilian steakhouse in Missouri; a bogus New Hampshire beauty school; and renovations to Vice President Joe Biden’s favorite Amtrak train station in Delaware. Somehow, stimulus “Sheriff” Biden overlooked the hundreds of millions in stimulus money steered to General Services Administrations junkets in Las Vegas and Hawaii, ghost congressional districts, dead people, and those ubiquitous stimulus propaganda road signs stamped with the shovel-ready logo.
In 2012, Ohio State University economics professor Bill Dupor reported that more than three-quarters of the jobs created or saved by the stimulus were government jobs. Dupor and another colleague also concluded that the massive wealth redistribution scheme “destroyed/forestalled roughly one million private sector jobs” by siphoning tax dollars “to offset state revenue shortfalls and Medicaid increases rather than boost private sector employment.”
In 2011, at a rare meeting of his Jobs and Competitiveness Council, Obama turned his shovel-ready vow into a punchline: “Shovel-ready was not as, uh, shovel-ready as we expected,” he cracked with a sheepish grin. The dog-and-pony Jobs Council, led by GE’s Jeffrey Immelt, giggled and cackled at Obama’s snark.
More forgotten insult to grievous injury: the telling moment when New York Times columnist David Brooks giggled on Jim Lehrer’s PBS show that Obama had told him off the record in 2009 that the shovel-ready promise was a crock, but that he sat on the truth until the Times’ Peter Baker reported the admission more than a year later in October 2010. The transcript:
JIM LEHRER: Off the record? So, then you can’t talk about it.
(LAUGHTER)
DAVID BROOKS: Yes, because Peter Baker is a better (reporter) than I am, because I couldn’t get him to go on the record with that thing.
(LAUGHTER)
JIM LEHRER: He said this to you a year ago?
DAVID BROOKS: It was obvious. I mean, you are trying to build a stimulus package. And when they were trying to build it, believe me, they would have loved to have filled it with infrastructure jobs. But the projects just didn’t exist.
While the lapdogs of the Fourth Estate snicker along with the White House about their lies and cover-up, the Wreckovery Act wreckage continues to pile up. And now the White House wants more money to burn for Porkulus Redux.
Retiring Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., was right when he warned five years ago that the “morally reprehensible” stimulus represented “the worst act of generational theft in our nation’s history.” It’s no joke. It’s a $2 trillion travesty built on criminal government malpractice. Take that and shovel it.

List Of Failed Green Energy Jobs & Companies – By Obama
Update: 7/19/12: The Amonix Solar: FAIL! – manufacturing plant in North Las Vegas, subsidized by more than $20 million in federal tax credits and grants given by Obama Administration, has closed its 214,000 square foot facility a year after it opened.
Solar Trust of America: FAIL! – Filed Bankruptcy in Oakland, CA, April 3, 2012

Bright Source: FAIL! – Bright Source warned Obama’s Energy Department officials in March 2011 that delays in approving a $1.6 billion U.S. loan guarantee would embarrass the White House and force the solar-energy company to close. Bright Source lost billions of dollars but is getting more money to keep trying. Can you say, “This isn’t working Mr. President?”

Solyndra: FAIL! – Obama gave $500,000,000 (that’s a HALF BILLION!) in taxpayer money to Solyndra who shut its doors and laid off 1100 workers in August 2011 after billions in losses due to failure to make a solar product that works! Barack Obama was not vetted before being elected President and neither was Solyndra before Mr. Obama threw that taxpayer money down the drain of unproven technology.

LSP Energy: FAIL! – LSPEnergy LP filed bankruptcy protection and a sale of its assets in Feb 2012

Energy Conversion Devices: FAIL! – On February 14, 2012 Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. and its subsidiaries filed for bankruptcy

Abound Solar: FAIL! – Abound Solar received a $400 million loan guarantee from Barack Obama then announced in June, 2012 that it would file for bankruptcy. Many of these failed corporations, such as Abound, donated MILLIONS and continue to donate to Barack Obama’s campaign. Can you say, “Democrat Slush Fund”? Yes this is illegal. But Democrats are being protected from being prosecuted, for now.

SunPower: FAIL! – SunPower stopped producing solar cells in 2011 at near bankruptcy then restructured with the help of, get this, oil giant TOTAL, Inc. who owns 60% stake in SunPower. Irony? The company is still struggling.

Beacon Power: FAIL! – Beacon Power Corp filed for bankruptcy protection in October, 2011 just a year after Obama approved a $43 million Government loan guarantee. They remain barely in business, still struggling to make energy that makes sense or that works at all.

Ecotality: FAIL! – ECOtality, a San Francisco green-tech company that never earned any money and remains on the verge of bankruptcy after receiving roughly $115 million in two loan guarantees from President Obama, who wants to do some more of this kind of Democrat Slush Fund Guarantees after he is elected to a 2nd term.

A123 Solar: FAIL! – A123 Solar received $279 million from taxpayers thanks to President Obama’s Department of Energy loan guarantees even after the Solyndra bankruptcy and is getting another $500M from Obama after a loss of $400M.

UniSolar: FAIL! – Uni-Solar filed for Ch 11 bankruptcy in June 20, 2012 after laying off hundreds of workers. UniSolar received even more Obama money after showing now progress, no profits and is still failing… yet they still remain in business with Obama’s help.

Azure Dynamics: FAIL! – Azure Dynamics filed for bankruptcy in June , 2012 wasting millions in Obama “Stimulus” money and received abatement on taxes owed and and several tax credits. Azure Dynamics LLC filed for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the US. Azure laid off 120 of its 160 employees in Oak Park; Boston; Vancouver, British Columbia; and the UK.

Evergreen Solar: FAIL! – Evergreen Solar received $527 Million in Taxpayer money from Obama and filed bankruptcy in late 2011. Evergreen, which closed its taxpayer-supported Devens factory in March, 2011 cut more than 1800 jobs. Evergreen’s $450 million factory, turned out to be a colossal “waste” of taxpayer money.

Ener1: FAIL! Ener1 Inc. received a $118 million U.S. Energy Department grant from President Obama to make electric-car batteries but filed for bankruptcy protection January 2012 after defaulting on bond debt.
