Wendy Davis: On second thought, it’d be impossible to craft an appropriate ban on abortion after 20 weeks

posted at 12:41 pm on February 14, 2014 by Allahpundit

Is it really a flip-flop if a pol’s stating her honestly held position after first lying about it? Obama’s “evolution” on gay marriage was many things — cynical, duplicitous, proof that his base would rather hold power than defend their principles — but no one would call it a flip-flop, right?

Let’s call this a half-flip since her true position, like most liberals, is abortion on demand at whatever stage. That’s what this would amount to in practice, although she’s unwilling to frame it as such.

“I’ve been disappointed with how the reporting has characterized my conversation with the Dallas Morning News. What I tried to convey there was that it’s impossible for the Legislature to define artfully enough exceptions that will accommodate everyday situations that women are facing in that arena, and that it has to be left to a woman and her doctor,” Davis said Thursday.

She continued, “I would not advocate for a 20-week ban because I don’t believe that it can capture and respect and give due deference to decision-making that belongs between a woman and her doctor. And typically, of course, these abortions are occurring in tragic situations where women have not discovered that there’s a severe fetal abnormality, or that there is some risk to her own health, until her pregnancy is advanced to that stage.”

Dan McLaughlin translates:

I’m tempted to accuse her of caving to lefties who felt “betrayed” that she backtracked on late-term abortion earlier this week (some of them did stand on principle this time, probably because governing Texas is less important than governing America) but that wouldn’t be fair. Her “support” for banning abortion after 20 weeks was a sham from the word go. Go back and read what she told the Dallas Morning News. She supports a ban in theory but in practice she wants the state to defer completely to women and their doctors when they invoke the health exceptions to it. In other words, if you say you’re exempt from the law, you are. Boehner should float that idea to Obama the next time he pushes a new assault-weapons ban. Compromise: Republicans will support the ban so long as it’s completely unenforceable. Don’t laugh — that’s basically the Democratic position on border security, no?

So yeah, this is Davis being Davis but I’m sure the upset among progressives at her half-flip was noticed at campaign HQ. Don’t expect too many more cynical lurches to the right from her, no matter how much standing pat as a true-blue liberal may hurt her. Speaking of which, here she is on gay marriage. According to one poll taken last year, a plurality of Texans support the practice and a heavy majority support some sort of legal recognition of gay relationships. She’s on safer ground taking this position than she is with late-term abortion.

Obviously, Wendy Davis is no longer actually running for governor of Texas – she has given up.

Davis was never electable in Texas, but, her ever-shifting positions and bizarre, unstable behavior have really raised red flags over her mental health, and made her completely unelectable for any position, pretty much anywhere.

There is no doubt that Davis will win the Texas democrat nomination – and there is no doubt that she will lose to Abbott in an historic landslide. But, what will Davis do when she loses? Other than perhaps working for her close friend, and #1 supporter, Cecile Richards at Planned Parenthood, or maybe the Killary campaign, her future looks very dim. Davis is completely toxic, and I doubt that anyone in the real world would hire her for anything at this point.

Liberals accuse the NRA of being rabid about refusing to allow any legislation restricting anything to do with ownership of any type of weapon, ammunition, or permit. In part they are right because there are many in the NRA who believe if they ‘give in’ on any proposed gun legislation it will only encourage and open the door for more and more restrictions.

In the same way there are many Liberals who are the same way regarding abortions, to the point where they cling to the defense of late term abortions well after the point where babies can survive outside of the womb, some that consist of barbaric practices such as shoving a rod into an infant’s skull while it’s still in the mother, scrammbling it’s brains, cutting it up, then dragging the parts out.

The reason for this and other procedures similar is because the Liberal defined defiition of a baby means the baby must be out of the womb to be qualified as a ‘baby’. As long as they leave the infant’s head inside the mother they can still murder it without it havnig been considered a ‘baby’.

This is also why Obama reportedly argued for the right for a doctor to go ahead and kill a live baby on the table struggling to live that lived despite a failed attempt to abort it. The initial intent was to ‘abort’ (the Liberal codeword for ‘murder’) the baby so the mother’s intent should be allowed to be fulfilled by allowing the baby to be aborted outside the womb – Truly, shamefully Barbaric!

A humane agreement could be reached between those who want to preserve our greatest national treasure (children) and those hell-bent on preserving the right to kill any baby at any time during pregnancy; however, the same rabid Liberal determination that mirrors some of those in the NRA are heling keep such brutal, barbaric practices being carried out in such a ‘civilized’ society.

OK, so how about we do completely away with exceptions for fetal homicide? After all, the fetus is not participating in any crime at the moment of his or her death, and yet, as many abortion survivers with skin problems, ripped off limbs, etc. can attest, they did not receive the best care at the hands of the medical doctor who performed their abortion. Of course, in terms of those who did not survive, they received excellent care, but that’s the point, isn’t it?

The War Planner on February 14, 2014 at 2:01 PM

I’m voting for her. I don’t think she’ll win, but my guess is she’ll get about 43% of the vote.

Over the long run, the GOP should worry about Texas. More and more people from blue states come here every day and with some libertarian trends in parts of Texas on gay marriage and marijuana legalization (among others) and the Hispanic growth, the GOP needs to be concerned–the GOP in Texas is extremely right wing on both social and economic issues and can’t bend. (The Texas GOP platform is vehemently anti-gay, to the point of wanting to repeal federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination against gays, if I remember correctly).

And there’s at least one poll (by Dems) that says that a part of what Wendy did was supported by the public (barely):

“Overall, a majority (51 percent) oppose the current legislation in the legislature, which “would place new restrictions and regulation on abortion providers that would likely result in the closure of all but five abortion clinics in the state of Texas, all of which are located along the I-35 corridor and would ban most abortions at 20 weeks of pregnancy.”

unclesmrgol on February 14, 2014 at 2:29 PM

–Uncle, here’s the problem with that argument: Many more invasive medical procedures than abortion in Texas are done in doctor’s offices. And they don’t have to comply with the outpatient medical center standards.

And, even in 2011 (before the recent law change), Americans United for Life said that Texas had “enacted comprehensive health and safety regulations for abortion clinics. These regulations are based on national abortion care standards and cover such areas as clinic administration, sanitation standards, patient care, post-operative recovery, and proper maintenance of patient records. Further, abortion providers must maintain hospital admitting privileges.”

Click on the pdf to see AUL’s 2011 write up: http://www.aul.org/states/texas.

So it looks like the purpose of those so-called “protective sanitary regulations” was to shut down clinics rather than to actually make things more sanitary.

If the clinics can’t or won’t upgrade their facilities, yes, they will have to shut down. The ones that do upgrade become more sanitary.

By your logic we shouldn’t have pollution emission standards, lest factories have to shut down.

My point is that even a major pro-life group thought the existing regulations took care of all the sanitary issues or else they wouldn’t have written what they did in 2011.

How much make up and peroxide can one woman handle?

I think she has wrestled the title previously held by Ann Richards.

Another slut

Plus, Land leads in MI. Imagine, a R woman might take over horrific Carl Levin’s seat.

The woman has a large coffee and a bottle of water. No wonder she needed a bag when she filibustered.

Go Terry! At least that would give MI one smart woman in the Senate.

Will your grace command me any service to the world’s end? I will go on the slightest errand now to the Antipodes that you can devise to send me on.

I will fetch you a toothpicker now from the furthest inch of Asia, bring you the length of Prester John’s foot, fetch you a hair off the
great Cham’s beard, do you any embassage to the Pygmies, rather than hold three words’ conference with this harpy.

Ugh, no more coverage of her or Chris Christie.

And I realize I live in a conservative area of Texas, but I have trouble believing the gay marriage bit. Was the poll based in the Montrose area? Snark.(Yes, I clicked on the link but then I saw Texas Tribune/University of Texas and just couldn’t bear to read it.)

So it looks like the purpose of those so-called “protective sanitary regulations” was to shut down clinics rather than to actually make things more sanitary.

Hmmmm – you mean kind of along the line of 0barky’s clean energy standards?
