Former member of Bloomberg gun group: Yep, they’re trying to confiscate legal guns

posted at 10:01 pm on February 12, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

It’s worth checking in with this quickly dwindling activist group of “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” every now and then, many of whom have discovered the group was a tad too much “Mayors Against Law-Abiding Citizens With Legal Guns” for their taste. The group got so much ink for their allegedly reasonable gun-control position post-Newtown, we should occasionally discuss why 50 mayors have left the group, including the mayor of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Via The Free Beacon, here’s Mayor John Tkazyik:

I’m the mayor of one of the largest cities in the Hudson Valley, just 90 minutes north of New York City. I’m a life member of the National Rifle Association and a former member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, or MAIG, started by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2006.

I’m no longer a member of MAIG. Why? Just as Ronald Reagan said of the Democratic Party, it left me. And I’m not alone: Nearly 50 pro-Second Amendment mayors have left the organization. They left for the same reason I did. MAIG became a vehicle for Bloomberg to promote his personal gun-control agenda — violating the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and taking resources away from initiatives that could actually work to protect our neighborhoods and save precious lives. […]

It did not take long to realize that MAIG’s agenda was much more than ridding felons of illegal guns; that under the guise of helping mayors facing a crime and drug epidemic, MAIG intended to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens. I don’t believe, never have believed and never will believe that public safety is enhanced by encroaching on our right to bear arms, and I will not be a part of any organization that does.

Buzzfeed has reported on MAIG’s falling numbers before.

As Jazz Shaw has pointed out, the group’s leadership is likely to get worse, not better.

I suppose I should appreciate this, but, honestly, how long should it have taken? It was pretty obvious from day one that this group had an agenda, as gun control activists invariably do.

Still, better late than never, I guess.

Imagine if the principal at Newtown had a firearm with her when she willingly went to confront the shooter without one. We wonder how many kids might have been saved.

Bitter Clinger on February 12, 2014 at 11:03 PM

Yes. Let’s also imagine who many lives could have been saved if the cops hadn’t taken TWENTY minutes to arrive. I have never seen an explanation for that.

climbnjump on February 12, 2014 at 11:12 PM

In experienced hands, a revolutionary war era Brown Bess muzzle-loading musket can get out three rounds per minute (four rounds per minute if you are really good). With a 20 minute response time and three rounds per minute – do the math. In that time, even with an antique weapon, the killer could have still gotten off enough shots to equal his death toll.

In a mass-shooting situation, the police are (at best) second responders. Armed citizens are the first responders.

Over the past four decades, all of the mass shootings with a death toll of greater than four have been in GUN FREE ZONES. (The one possible exception to this is the Giffords shooting – there were armed citizens there, but they did not draw because of police presence.) This empirical evidence demonstrates that “gun free” zones RAISE the risk of a successful mass shooting (except in areas that have sufficient on-site armed security to respond immediately, in case of an incident).

If It Saves Only One Life
“If it saves only one life” is a frequent refrain from those who would control and/or prohibit guns. What if we applied this logic to other things in our lives. Jack Spirko who hosts the wildly popular The Surivival Podcast did just that recently. He applied it to stairs and staircases.
Since the gun prohibitionists and their media allies like Diane Sawyer of ABC News love to use and misuse statistics, let’s look at the stats that Jack has compiled.
First some statistics, falling down stairs on averageKills over 1,300 people per year – (source)
Over 1 million people are injured per year in stairway falls – (source)
Nearly 100,000 children a year are injured enough by stairway falls to require hospitalization – (source)
Young children and the elderly are the most victimized by falls – (source)

Let’s take those numbers over a decade we get… 13,000 deaths that never had to happen
10,000,000 plus hospital visits that never had to happen
1,000,000 children hospitalized for serious injury that never had to happen
An unfair and disproportionate group of victims who are small kids or older adults that need protection

So what does Jack propose?
Let’s start with what we can all agree on, the madness must stop. So, at a minimum, we have to ban the building of any new stairs for general use. All new constructions will have stairs only for emergency evacuations, there will be licensed trained professionals that can use them for other needs and who will direct us untrained types down them if necessary. That is right, if you need to use your stairs dial 911 and professionals will come to your aid.

Jack’s logic is impeccable if you buy into the argument that saving just one life is worth it. And while we are at it, let’s not forget buckets, kiddie pools, and scissors. They have all caused the death of children one way or another.
If It Only Saves One Life – Applying Gun Control Logic to Staircases
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wcbl5fcQ_IQ
Jack has also produced a video in which he makes his argument for stairway prohibition.

Take that national socialist gun grabbers:

Officials in Connecticut Stunned by What Could Be a Massive, State-Wide Act of ‘Civil Disobedience’ by Gun Owners
On Jan. 1, 2014, tens of thousands of defiant gun owners seemingly made the choice not to register their semi-automatic rifles with the state of Connecticut as required by a hastily-passed gun control law. By possessing unregistered so-called “assault rifles,” they all technically became guilty of committing Class D felonies overnight.

Republican state Sen. Tony Guglielmo told The Courant he recently spoke to a constituent at a meeting in Ashford, who informed him that some of his friends with semi-automatic rifles are intentionally taking a stand.

“He made the analogy to prohibition,” the lawmaker recalled. “I said, ‘You’re talking about civil disobedience, and he said ‘Yes.’”

Guglielmo said he really thought the “vast majority would register.”

When he did sign on he acknowledged supporting the ‘principles’ below. Are there any that he no longer supports?

Punish – to the maximum extent of the law – criminals who possess, use, and traffic in illegal guns.

Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break the law by knowingly selling guns to straw purchasers.

Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities’ right to access, use, and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement, or to interfere with the ability of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to combat illegal gun trafficking.

Keep lethal, military-style weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines off our streets.

Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and tracing of illegal guns.

Support all local state and federal legislation that targets illegal guns; coordinate legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.

Invite other cities to join us in this new national effort.

And rest assured, that will not apply to the big shots who are pushing that agenda. Just look at NYC carry permits. You will find a list of who’s who, with those permits. But, if you are the average NYC resident, you will either be denied a carry permit, or it will be so heavily restricted, that it is worthless. I know of one person who had it restricted to one night a week between certain hours. He made the mistake of telling the issuing officer, what day he usually went to the range.

You all continually quote the same OFA talking points with little thought or analysis about what you’re saying, and none of you ever have any valid facts to substnatiate your assertions.
You all appear to be the identical sock puppets for someone in OFA.

Small business? I only ask because we need many more Liberal business owners as running a business is a eye opening experience. I rarely meet a Liberal who understands risk and can manage said risk.

Now, about the ACA. Yes the right had the chance to reform the health car industry and did not. Can’t say I would have agreed with their plans when they were in power. When out of power they did have plans and presented them in a sit down with President Obama and to be honest, they were ignored.

Because of many factors, one being Scott Brown, a Senate bill that was never meant to pass, was the only available option and was passed. Folks can argue about how it was passed, but the fact is….it did pass.

My problem: It was a terrible bill that should have never been passed and made the problems worse. The yearly increase of health care insurance had been decreasing each year to around a yearly 4% by 2007; uncompensated care was 47B a year; 30M folks were not covered. After passage of the ACA, health insurance costs are increasing at an alarming rate, we fixed a 47B a year problem by spending 200B a year; and those not covered remain the same.

If you think the ACA is a good deal, then you have a different agenda than me or I have missed something. The ACA is the worst bill, I did not say idea, in my lifetime.

They have no desire to be straight with us. They know they are wrong and don’t care. They are pushing their agenda no matter what.

Court strikes California law limiting concealed weapons

(02-13) 11:28 PST San Francisco — California must allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms in public, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday, striking down the core of the state’s permit system for handguns.

In a 2-1 decision, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said San Diego County violates the Constitution’s Second Amendment by requiring residents to show “good cause” – and not merely the desire to protect themselves – to obtain a concealed-weapons permit.

If you want to be picky, a better term is totalitarians. I prefer to see things not as left or right, but as a spectrum from total govt power to anarchy.

I’m done celebrating fools who have seen the destruction that their idiocy has wrought and decided to correct course. I could have told you that Obungler was an unqualified leftist who would destroy American jobs and demographics. I could have told you that Obunglercare would be a total disaster. I could have told you that joining Nanny Doomberg on an anti-second amendment crusade was a bad idea. I could have told you that a crease in a man’s pants is not a reason to vote for him. WTF is wrong with you people?

HonestLib on February 13, 2014 at 1:57 PM

We should really wait for an ACA thread.

I think the ACA is a good deal better than where we were.
It hasn’t had much of an impact on me as a biz owner.
Insurance rates have been consistently going up while coverage goes down long before Obama was even a Senator.
Some of my younger employees are opting to stay on their parents’ plans. So some actual cost savings for me.
As a country, I think we’re finally at the beginning of dealing with this issue. And if that means the Repubs are now going to jump in with some ideas…great.
If indeed you like the idea of the ACA – and your objection isn’t based on some Constitutional or Ayn Randian argument – how would you have liked to have seen this good idea acted upon, in your lifetime?
And who offered an actual plan, or even the kernels of one, you feel would have worked better?

(And can we expect you to continue this angle of identifying as a liberal…sort of? But maybe you don’t?)
