“Hillary papers” show ruthless, ambitious First Lady

posted at 8:01 am on February 10, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

And … so? The Free Beacon gets a genuine scoop with its blockbuster report from Alana Goodman, one which paints Hillary Clinton in a not-terribly-favorable light. Even her friends and political allies found her ambition a bit off-putting, it seems. Then again, those qualities haven’t exactly been a state secret since, oh, HillaryCare:

The papers of Diane Blair, a political science professor Hillary Clinton described as her “closest friend” before Blair’s death in 2000, record years of candid conversations with the Clintons on issues ranging from single-payer health care to Monica Lewinsky.

The archive includes correspondence, diaries, interviews, strategy memos, and contemporaneous accounts of conversations with the Clintons ranging from the mid-1970s to the turn of the millennium.

Diane Blair’s husband, Jim Blair, a former chief counsel at Tyson Foods Inc. who was at the center of “Cattlegate,” a 1994 controversy involving the unusually large returns Hillary Clinton made while trading cattle futures contracts in the 1970s, donated his wife’s papers to the University of Arkansas Special Collections library in Fayetteville after her death.

The full contents of the archive, which before 2010 was closed to the public, have not previously been reported on and shed new light on Clinton’s three decades in public life. The records paint a complex portrait of Hillary Clinton, revealing her to be a loyal friend, devoted mother, and a cutthroat strategist who relished revenge against her adversaries and complained in private that nobody in the White House was “tough and mean enough.”

For those looking for nuggets of embarrassment gold from the Clinton Era, this is pay dirt. But it’s really limited to that era, which ended more than thirteen years ago, an era for many that seems oddly positive in comparison to reality today. Other than an insistence on single-payer as the ultimate solution for health-care reform — which was also hardly a secret at the time — very little of this will have much relation to the current political atmosphere. One has to wonder whether Clinton nostalgia might overwhelm any meager demerits this trove earns Hillary, given the contrast in economics between the two periods.

Or perhaps Paul Begala is right, and no one will much care what kind of an operative Hillary was fourteen years ago:

That’s not entirely true, but it’s at least true in relation to the long-ago behavior of Hillary Clinton. Besides, why spend a lot of time focusing on her time as First Lady, when we have the still-relevant example of her incompetence as Secretary of State? She started off her four-year run as America’s top diplomat by sucking up to Russia with a reset button that blamed all of the problems between the two countries on George W. Bush, only to continuously get upstaged and outplayed by Vladimir Putin. Hillary ended it with the disaster in Libya, culminating in the sacking of our diplomatic facility in Benghazi and the loss of a US Ambassador and three other Americans, all without any effective response whatsoever.

The problem with Hillary isn’t her cut-throated approach to politics. It’s that she’s incompetent. We’re better off focusing on that more recent and vivid history than in revisiting the nostalgic past of the Democratic Party.

America should get to know Mrs. Clinton.

TimBuk3 on February 10, 2014 at 8:04 AM

why spend a lot of time focusing on her time as First Lady

Why? Because they are in the process of re-inventing Killary once again (I’ve lost track of what version Killary we’re up to).

Victimhood isn’t going to work this time around so we see the “tough steely Killary” much her own man among the cut throat politics of the Clinton White House. She’s executive material because she really wasn’t the doormat we were led to believe back when that image worked for her.

The Killary Klinton Kamp is trying to re-set the narrative. She can’t hang her hat on her time in the Senate or as Sec State (where her only accomplishment was as the butcher of Benghazi) so the theme is now that she’s “uniquely qualified” by the length and scope of her experience. That means re-writing (again) the time Killary was First Lady.

The idea still lives:

“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we’ve always had a private notion of children, your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children.

So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents or kids belong to their families and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.

Once it’s everybody’s responsibility and not just the household’s we start making better investments.”

The problem is that the cut throat tactics are reserved for fellow Americans and the velvet glove gets used in Moscow, Beijing and Benghazi. If she pulled out a reset button with Republicans and gave them concessions the way they get handed out internationally and then went all scorched earth and vengeance on Vlad and Xi and the rest, we’d be a lot better off.

Paul Begala is relentlessly partisan, and has no core values of his own other than “what spin works best?”

Hillary was a long shot at best I win prior to these biographical descriptions coming out: she is a poor campaigner, off-putting, and has so little personal charisma that Barrack Obama was able to condescend to her repeatedly over the last seven years and get away with it completely. He paid no price at all for saying so sneeringly, “Hillary, I guess you’re likeable enough” in a nationally televised debate, for crying out loud.

These papers will leak out in drips and drabs for the entire run-up to the election. I can’t wait for the one where Hillary describes her last visit to Ft. Marcy Park. Just kidding. Sort of.

She’s sunk, and the really interesting question is who in the heck can the Democrats run? Cuomo? Please.

Does this not have any reference to her unwillingness as Sec. State to protect our folks in Libya? Or to our possible future decisions regarding Iran?

We seem to have a pattern here with the Hillster. And not a good one. It supports your contention of focusing on her incompetence, and we should not throw all our eggs in one basket on that topic.

…except, as noted elsewhere, for Hillary’s lying back in 1993-94 about not supporting single-payer in public, when she was telling Blair and others a different story in private.

ObamaCare’s not going to be settled law in 2016, and one of the questions is going to be not just reform or repeal, but even within reform whether it should be towards less or more government control. Hillary’s backing of single-payer 20 years ago means she’s open to questioning now if that’s what she’d go for if elected in 2016.

Since Hillary has the “D” in front her name, she’ll be granted the cloak of immunity by the media for any and all past misdeeds that arise. It would be an entirely different story if she had an “R” in front. For example if Sarah Palin decided to test the political waters again, we will once again also be treated to every detail of her life spun negatively and then spun over and over again by our joke of a media. How many times will we have to suffer yet again from a 6 year old joke punchline from Saturday Night Live skit(I can Russia from my House)?
No way we can ever hope that the media will ever do its actual job on Hillary or give her the ‘Palin’ treatment. IMHO, we need to be much smarter with the Mainstream media and the games they play and just declare them a part of the Democrat party who do nothing but shill for them and treat them as such.
Discredit their reporting first with actual real facts and then we can finally start to do real push back on the false narratives that they intentionally drive.

On April 21, 1993, during a speech at the opening reception for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., President Clinton drew parallels between the genocide in Bosnia and the Holocaust.

That same month, he met with top U.S. military officials, diplomats, and aid workers advocating for military action against the Serbian forces of Slobodan Milosevic.

At the time, however, Hillary Clinton was not on board with the use of deadly force. According to Blair’s April 29, 1993 account, the First Lady said she “was very much against any intervention—had been killing each other for 900 yrs.”

Blair later spoke with President Clinton in mid-May and gave him “messages a la [Hillary’s] instructions: stop ruminating aloud re Bosnia.”

The White House was under increasing pressure to address the atrocities in the Balkans. Yet the United States waited more than two years before taking military action.

Blair’s papers are not the first indication that Hillary privately opposed U.S. intervention in Bosnia prior to 1995.

An unnamed friend of the Clintons told Newsweek in 1993 that the First Lady “regards [Bosnia] as a Vietnam that would compromise health-care reform.”

The author and controversialist Christopher Hitchens later reported a similar account from then-Secretary of Defense Les Aspin.

Since leaving the White House, however, Hillary Clinton has said that she favored earlier intervention in the Balkans, decrying “the tragic failures in Rwanda, early Bosnia, and up to now, the inadequate response in Darfur” in a 2005 speech to the United Nations.

Hillary lied? Imagine that. But I’m more interested in the papers that are still under lock and key.

In 1978 and 1979, lawyer and First Lady of Arkansas Hillary Rodham engaged in a series of trades of cattle futures contracts. Her initial $1,000 investment had generated nearly $100,000 when she stopped trading after ten months. In 1994, after Hillary Rodham Clinton had become First Lady of the United States, the trading became the subject of considerable controversy regarding the likelihood of such a spectacular rate of return, possible conflict of interest, and allegations of disguised bribery,[1] allegations that Clinton strongly denied. There were no official investigations of the trading and Clinton was never charged with any wrongdoing.

I have seen few truly evil people in American politics in my lifetime, but Hillary certainly is one of them. And I don’t make that statement lightly.

The current revelations about the first lady may make for fun reading, but it hardly can compare with the Benghazi disaster, where her inept policies led directly to the deaths of four Americans, one of which was the US ambassador to Libya. Not only was she too cowardly to take full responsibility for that disaster and resign, but she had the stones to actually show up at the funeral of the dead men and literally embrace the families of the fallen and blamed, yes BLAMED, the entire event on a video nobody saw. It really, honestly, doesn’t get much lower than that.

Not only did she let four Americans die in the dirt that is Libya, but she lied about it, covered it up, and then asked “What difference does it make?” after they died. There is a special place in hell reserved for this person and it would be a hideously dark day in our nation’s history if she ever got elected to anything ever again.

If she does run for president, the video of her saying “What difference does it make” should be played again, and again, and again. And to any liberals out there like that miscreant Paul Begala, I say, “What difference does it make?”

What difference does it make to abandon four brave Americans to die a horrible death without lifting a finger to help them? What difference does it make to lie about an attack on our consulate and then blame it on a video almost nobody saw? What difference does it make that she lied about all of this and covered it up before a major presidential election? What difference does it make that she lied under oath to Congress that she claimed she didn’t know it was a terrorist attack, when Gerneral Ham, the commander watching these events unfold in real time, new from the start that it was a terrorist attack and told the Secretary of Defense, who then told the president? Did she not talk to the Secretary of Defense at all that night? Even the CIA knew it was a terrorist attack, yet Hillary seemed to be the only one who thought it was simply a “demonstration that got out of hand.” And let’s not even talk about why she didn’t have the nerve to go on five, yes FIVE, Sunday morning talk shows and made Susan Rice lie for her. And even days after the event, Clinton and the White House were still pushing the story of the video, especially when Obama went to the UN and on The View, simply to deflect attention from it before the election.

Hillary lied, and lied, and lied again and Benghazi should be used as a club to beat her over the head with until she decides not to run for anything else. We can only hope that she will never run for anything else but, knowing the Clintons, she most certainly will.

…It’s that she’s incompetent.

Incompetence is the result, she is extremely able and her supporters can easily dismiss that charge…Mrs. Clinton was more than incompetent in her involvement in Benghazi, she and her team seemed to have purposely made wrong choices because of their ideology.

The results to conservatives looking on is incompetence, all of their foreign policy is conducted that way…rules of engagement, symbolic risks, pretend surges not backed up with support from the secretary or the President…

It’s not incompetence, its wrong choices.

Fleuries on February 10, 2014 at 9:17 AM

This actually helps her, I think. Her support is locked in.

MT on February 10, 2014 at 9:19 AM

I don’t think she’ll be the nominee she will get challenged and she’s just not that good of a candidate. These specific instances of incompetence Libya etc. don’t seem to resonate, agreed she’s incompetent but so is Obama. Whoever will eventually run against the Democratic nominee is going to have to make the case that we are worse off than we were before Obama. We are spending twice for fuel than we were six years ago health insurance is a disaster and on and on.

That sounds like the excuse Hillary used after she flunked the D.C. bar exam.

“It’s not that I’m incompetent, it’s just that I chose the wrong answers . . . .”

AZCoyote on February 10, 2014 at 9:23 AM

I can’t wait for her complete and total breakdown when she loses the nomination. Being rejected by the dims twice will be too much for her. I hope they manage to get that moment when she realizes her dreams of power will never happen on film. All her evil schemes and plan for naught.

Flange on February 10, 2014 at 9:24 AM

The GOP better run a logical (vs someone who will appear as pandering) conservative woman if they want to have a chance… and start cleaning house of the lifetime pols.

MT on February 10, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Politics about the future, not the past; about voters’ lives, not politicians’. Thus the personal attacks on Clintons will fail. @ChrisCuomo
— Paul Begala (@PaulBegala) February 10, 2014

Dems are soooooo funny. Like they are going to forgo personal attacks on GOP politicians about their past. Go soak your hypocritical head, Paul Begala, whoever you are.

KS Rex on February 10, 2014 at 9:26 AM

Ed’s wrong. This is the kind of thing Low Info voters can relate to: “She lies. She holds grudges. She’s a bad person. How can I trust some like to care about me? Do I want to vote for such a nasty person? ”

Even in the face of this grinding economy and his incompetence in the face of it, Obama won the election because of his MSM-created veneer of caring. Anything that makes Hillary look mean-spirited or uncaring, whatever its vintage, should be used to the utmost.

Boomslang Joe on February 10, 2014 at 9:12 AM

I think you’ve got something there.

Obama was a charming young black man who ‘cares about people like me.’ America swooned.

Hillary is a wicked old witch.

Hillary is the Democrat version of McCain. The Party holds her out as being a ‘moderate,’ but she really has a screw loose.

fadetogray on February 10, 2014 at 9:29 AM

Y’all are crazy… she’s got the socialist/progressive nomination locked UP.

MT on February 10, 2014 at 9:29 AM

More recent than the “Clinton Era” and very relevant about a Benghazi Hillary presidency was her Happy Holidays, presents-for-everyone, commercial when she ran for President in 2007. It features her desire for 1) Universal Healthcare 2)Alternative Energy 3) Bring Troops Home 4)Middle Class Tax Breaks 5)Universal pre-K.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzBvQ9EeF3k

ToddPA on February 10, 2014 at 9:41 AM

The problem with Hillary isn’t her cut-throated approach to politics. It’s that she’s incompetent. We’re better off focusing on that more recent and vivid history than in revisiting the nostalgic past of the Democratic Party.

Au contraire, Ed. This is not an either-or proposition. Hillary’s bottle-blonde ambition is a self-serving cut-throated history of ambition to wield power. She lies with impunity and projects her ruthlessness on to her perceived political enemies. With her selective memory and word-parsing, she avoids personal responsibility. She is vindictive.

And this is another reason to be suspicious of the Univision partnership in re early-childhood education. Hillary and the rest of the “progressives” are determined to propagandize and “educate” youngsters under the guise of caring for the young.

onlineanalyst on February 10, 2014 at 9:48 AM

She’s a bit*h because she has to overcompensate for her lack of any substantive achievement in any of the opportunities that have been handed to her on a silver platter as she rides the coattails of powerful men. (cue the feminist irony)

She hasn’t done anything noteworthy. Remember when Bill was running? “Hillary is a partner at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, AK.” WHAT?!! She a “partner” at some Gomer Pyle law office (because of who her husband is), and that’s supposed to impress us? What did she ever do there (besides her stellar work on Whitewater)?

Senator of NY? Wow — she carpet-bagged into a liberal state after a liberal lion of the Senate decided to retire… lots of risk there…

Secretary of State? Utter FAILURE.

From ruthless to cuddly and competent — the fawning media’s Hillary makeover.

Dan333 on February 10, 2014 at 9:54 AM

Unfortunately younger voters will dismiss this as “before their time” and we constantly see how little the past matters to them. And the feminists will see her brass ones as positive qualities.

katiejane on February 10, 2014 at 9:56 AM

Not to mention the fact she is a pathological liar… and not just about things like Benghazi, but about stupid sh*t, to boot!!

Bullets over the tarmac in Bosnia? FALSE

Chelsea’s whereabouts on 9-11? FALSE

Only a demented individual makes up crap like this after the age of 13…

Do the media and its courtiers on the left have such a hardon for a woman president that they’re willing to do what it takes put this imbecile into the White House? (now that they’ve been able to check the “african american” box, of course)

We shall see…

dpduq on February 10, 2014 at 9:59 AM

None of this is news. From what I read, everything in this was known before. Does noone remember Primary Colors? The only difference is you now have an unimpeachable documentation source. But none of this is truly revelatory.

As part of the vast right wing conspiracy, I loathe this woman more and more each day. Being from a military family, the fact that she could look the parents of the four fallen heroes from Benghazi in the face and lie to them is beyond even my comprehension. The fact that the media would rather protect Obama and Hillary and not let these heroes get the credit they deserve for saving other Americans is beyond my comprehension. What difference, at this point, does it make. I will do everything I can to ensure that Hillary is never in charge of the military, she doesn’t deserve it and the military doesn’t deserve someone who is so callous about their lives.
