Video: Armed homeowner scares off intruders

posted at 5:31 pm on February 8, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Cheviot Hills, California on the westside of Los Angeles is within a short drive of Fox Studios and Sony Pictures, and is one of the lowest density neighborhoods of LA. That doesn’t mean that the sleepy community is crime-free … or entirely asleep, either. Burglars who had started a spree of B&Es in the neighborhood brought it to an abrupt halt when they discovered Carla awake — and armed:

Los Angeles Local News | FOX 11 LA KTTV

“I’m not a sitting duck,” says Carla.  She prefers to keep her last name private.  Carla is a Cheviot Hills homeowner who scared away burglars when she grabbed her shotgun and fired.

Carla told us her dog woke her up when he started barking. She looked outside and saw a man in her backyard, another waiting by a car.

Carla wasted no time. Wearing her nightgown, she went outside and fired once toward the ground.  Carla says, it was just to scare them off. It worked. The two suspects ran back to a white sedan and drove off.

Carla says she heard one of them screaming, “Crazy b**ch has a gun!!”

There are a couple of lessons to take from Carla’s experience. First, warning shots can be effective, but don’t fire up — fire down, as Carla did, because what goes up will come down at the same velocity fast enough to kill someone. However, warning shots that empty your weapon are usually a bad idea unless you can reload quickly. Shotguns are indeed effective home-defense weapons, but they’re not the only effective choice for law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against burglars, robbers, intruders, and the like.

Another point: People who own firearms for self-defense in relatively quiet neighborhoods will often hear scoffing at the need for such measures, as if there’s something magical about those areas that keep them immune from crime. Cheviot Hills is one of the nicer areas of LA, but that didn’t stop burglars from targeting those houses. Those two may not come back any time soon, though.

If you’ve never heard of Cheviot Hills, you’ve probably at least seen it:

Situated within a short drive of both Fox Studios and Sony Pictures Studios, the neighborhood has often been the site for the filming of motion pictures and television shows. Examples dating to the 1920s and 1930s include Laurel and Hardy,[6][15]The Ropers television series from the late 1970s, the movie Private School in 1983,[16] and an example dating from 2009 is the house of the characters of Claire and Phil Dunphy in the television series Modern Family.[17] A house on Cheviot Drive was used in “The Flying Nun” starring Sally Field and a house on Glenbarr Avenue was the home of “Nanny and the Professor”.

Nice area. Carla wants to keep it that way.

Update: Science geeks challenge my claim, and rightly so, that bullets fired upward will come down at the same rate of speed. However, the bullet/buckshot will come down fast enough to kill even if it is going slower — and that’s not theoretical, as it happens occasionally. Every two or three years, we’d see fatal cases of it in Southern California around a holiday like Independence Day and New Years. If warning or celebratory shots kill someone, that’s a possible involuntary manslaughter charge, based on reckless action.

So, if you want to fire a warning shot, shoot downward and make sure you know the area is clear.

There are so many great videos on YouTube about stories like this. I recommend you all search for and view these news videos. There are so many of them, and they don’t get wide enough coverage.

There are a couple of lessons to take from Carla’s experience. First, warning shots can be effective, but don’t fire up — fire down, as Carla did

1. Bullets ricochet and could hit you.

2. Warning shots get you arrested.

3. To avoid 1 & 2, shoot the perp.

Give the state I do expect she’ll be charged with discharging a weapon inside city limits, right? I’m not familiar with CA gun laws (having thankfully escaped the damned place 20 years ago) but methinks it’s not a castle doctrine / stand your ground state. And even if it was, some pinheaded DA is going to say that if she didn’t need to fire right at them then she wasn’t threatened *enough* to fire.

Just wait . . .

For further insight, we turn to Hatcher’s Notebook (1962) by Major General Julian S. Hatcher, a U.S. Army ordnance expert. Hatcher described military tests with, among other things, a .30 caliber bullet weighing .021 pounds. Using a special rig, the testers shot the bullet straight into the air. It came down bottom (not point) first at what was later computed to be about 300 feet per second. “With the [.021 pound] bullet, this corresponds to an energy of 30 foot pounds,” Hatcher wrote. “Previously, the army had decided that on the average an energy of 60 foot pounds is required to produce a disabling wound. Thus, service bullets returning from extreme heights cannot be considered lethal by this standard.”

If 30 foot pounds doesn’t mean much to you, the bullet made a mark about one-sixteenth of an inch deep in a soft pine board — about what you’d get giving it a good whack with a hammer. Note that we’re talking about bullets shot straight up. If the bullet is fired more or less horizontally, it may not lose much speed before returning to earth and could easily kill someone.

Cali’s gun laws blow. Great that she had a shotgun, but if those guys were illegally armed and intent on taking her to the mat, she would have been doomed with only a shotgun. Don’t they have like a 10-round mag limit there? And my AR that I bought from a California company (a great company) was forced to come with one of those mag ejector buttons that you have to like press a bullet into. Still haven’t had a chance to switch that out yet.

Wait til you see the whites of their eyes and stay lethal, my friends.

One of the earliest lessons I ever learned with firearms is that you never pick up a weapon without verifying its status as loaded or unloaded and that you never hand another person a weapon unless the action is locked open and that you never accept a weapon without visually inspecting the chamber.

I have not been bothered the last three years since I put iron bars on my windows. I have also installed an alarm system. They have no fear of alarm systems or sometimes dogs. I have thought of arming myself but not familiar with guns and I will get the training if I decide to do so. The Sheriff’s dept is spread thin here and they told me to get armed. Druggies are not going to stop robbing just because the economy turns around. These people choose not to work and also choose to rob for a living since its almost legal to do so. Rarely are they caught and if they do get caught they get little punishment. I truly hope you never get robbed yourself. Your side’s ‘methods of strategy’ won’t WORK, no way, no how … period.

And did you notice she didn’t need thirty bullets?

verbaIuce on February 8, 2014 at 5:48 PM

Irrelevant to the “gun control debate.”

She stopped a couple of common thieves “cold”, before they could break in, thanks to her dog.

The reason for common citizens to be armed, with semi-auto versions of military rifles and carbines, complete with HIGH capacity magazines, is to KEEP THE GOVERNMENT FROM WALKING ALL OVER US.

This “warrior Policeman (Policewoman)” business needs to STOP . . . . . like yesterday.

I wonder which Sunday morning ‘political argument show’ he’ll go on tomorrow, bragging about this ?

Re: Warning shots.

When you shoot the first one, it serves as a warning to any others.

yongoro on February 8, 2014 at 8:48 PM

Usually quite a bit slower here on earth Ed

Yup, agreed. Physics says no.

But especially applicable in reference to shot.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on February 8, 2014 at 5:53 PM

Fair enough; I’ve corrected the post. Not everyone uses a shotgun as their defense weapon. I think warning shots are dumb going in either direction, and dangerous to others in the area.

This is not ‘common’, but can and does happen.

No one knew this girl had been shot, until the first-responders arrived.

Right-on . . . . . then the next time the others will argue over “who’s goin’ in first ?”

“Crazy b*tch”?

Guess she and her gun disproved that theory. Without her “leetle friend”, she’d probably be a “dead b*tch.”

Man…talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wow.

mike_NC9 on February 8, 2014 at 9:06 PM

The only warning shot I’ll ever fire is if I miss the first time.

NoPain on February 8, 2014 at 9:08 PM

So two “thugs” are on private property in the middle of the night planning to break into someone’s home and rob them and she’s the “crazy” b1tch with a gun?

LOL

katy on February 8, 2014 at 9:15 PM

Maybe if your side would come to the table to help our president improve the economy so they didn’t have to rob other people to survive then we could approach the issue sensibly.
But you won’t. Your side just wants to keep complaining from the sidelines and blaming Obama for the problems he inherited.
And did you notice she didn’t need thirty bullets?

verbaIuce on February 8, 2014 at 5:48 PM

I found this entry in Webster’s under the definition of “dirt stupid”.

Now she will be arrested and the bad guys will be cut loose soon after arrest.

While you’re at it better start smoking weed and quitting tobacco to stay “in compliance”.

If you nibble your pop tart the wrong way, you are going down, but please don’t complain about the obscene “sexual education” poster on the wall of the elementary school.

Sherman1864 on February 8, 2014 at 9:26 PM

Good for her. I know what it’s like to shoot people. It ain’t purty.
I’m not sure about open carry but then again, I didn’t walk on boardwalks in Dodge City during the 70′s. The 1870′s, that is.
Do we really have a need for such open range attitude? I’m just askin’.

Makes for polite society and low crime, but first you have to trust people more than you trust politicians. Open carry is legal in many places and there isn’t any ‘Wild West‘ effect observable.

sharrukin on February 8, 2014 at 10:08 PM

I’m sorry but really? Some are saying that the first ‘warning shot’ should go into the invader(s)? Sure, if you are in imminent danger but the tone smacks of vengence. What makes you such a killer?
I roam this earth amongst all creatures and rarely feel this need to ace anyone. If some a$$hole comes to get my chrome, I’m gonna give him a thorough beat down and if it’s just a broke sumbeotch, I might just slip him a twenty. Maybe give him a beer.
Word of advice to the gunslingers- why kill when you can get info? Why kill when you can ensure they suffer a long prison sentence for stupidity/desperation? Put a cap in their ass, no, literally- not a chest shot. Killing folks gets complicated.

“It’s a hell of a thing, killin’ a man. You take away all he’s got… and all he’s gonna have.” (Clint Eastwood- ‘the Unforgiven’)

I’m glad this fine lady didn’t have to experience that.

I’ve lived in some of the toughest neighborhoods in the country. Many of buddies carried (illegally) and I had no problem at all with that, because my buddy’s didn’t all wag it about like it was an extensilon of their manhood, but now it seems when two a-holes in a fit of road rage decide to kill each other I begin to question all the need for packin’ up. Little old ladies might need it, but you can’t take that gat everywhere. (Although I knew a fellow railroader gandy dancer that took his revolver into the shower with him. Mean sob.)
C’mon, I know and appreciate what Sam Colt said about equal, but let’s not get all cocky about it. :)

Because most people aren’t super ninja commandos and getting out of a violent incident in the fastest, least dangerous way possible makes the most sense. Dropping the intruder is the way to do that.

It also avoids the possibility of lawsuits later. Complicated is what happens when they start spinning stories to law enforcement who want to send a message to other law abiding citizens.

I’m glad this fine lady didn’t have to experience that.

Nape-wa-ste on February 8, 2014 at 10:09 PM

Better if she had never been the victim of this intruder at all if wishes coming true are what we are talking about.

sharrukin on February 8, 2014 at 10:18 PM

I’ve lived in some of the toughest neighborhoods in the country.

Why were they tough neighborhoods to begin with?

I would hazard a guess that there were very restrictive gun laws on the books in those ‘tough neighborhoods’ which inconvenienced only those who chose to abide by the law…as your friends did not.

Many of buddies carried (illegally) and I had no problem at all with that, because my buddy’s didn’t all wag it about like it was an extensilon of their manhood, but now it seems when two a-holes in a fit of road rage decide to kill each other I begin to question all the need for packin’ up.

Nape-wa-ste on February 8, 2014 at 10:18 PM

I don’t recall all that many gun battles as you are describing and those that do take place oddly seem to take place much more frequently in more restrictive gun zones.

sharrukin on February 8, 2014 at 10:23 PM

Not to obsess over the nerdy details here, Ed, but the Mythbusters link and story seem to confirm just the opposite — that it is extraordinarily unlikely that birdshot or buckshot fired even from a 12 gauge shotgun would return to earth and cause serious injury (in the unlikely event that you hit someone).

The bullets tested by Mythbusters were fired from a 9mm handgun and a .30-06 rifle. I would think either round would have significantly greater mass than shotgun shot, in any size other than a slug.

Jaibones on February 8, 2014 at 10:31 PM

Why were they tough neighborhoods to begin with? sharrukin on February 8, 2014 at 10:23 PM

Because they are old and outdated. Because it’s been deemed more lucrative to leave town so you can get a cheaper investment- in another state or country. Poverty drives crime; more than drug addiction or greed.
I have no problem with guns as long as people are responsible. This shootin’ people in the neck for throwin’ popcorn isn’t the finest example of illustrating this. Sorry, if that offends you.
I was shooting Wimbledon Cup matches at 14 at 1,000 yards with a Remington 700 BDL bull barrel-ed beaver tailed stock with .244 wildcats (more commonly known as 6 mm Remington Magnum).
This is all I am saying, my compradre- if you carry around a hammer- everything starts lookin’ like a nail. Be careful and peace out
