Axelrod to Hillary fans: Why are you wasting donations on 2016 when we need them for the Senate this year?

posted at 4:41 pm on February 7, 2014 by Allahpundit

The man’s got a point, for once.

Awful lot of static aimed at Hillary lately from Team Hopenchange. First came this WSJ piece about Democrats being “unsettled” by all the fundraising attention pro-Clinton PACs have gotten lately, then came this buzzy BuzzFeed report about Obama’s aides knocking her emerging 2016 strategy. Then came the news that Democrats will get no help from Priorities USA this fall; they’re keeping their powder dry for the Clinton coronation. There’s a zero-sum game afoot: The earlier the Hillary! 2016 extravaganza gets going, the less attention wealthy donors will pay to this year’s Senate races, which raises the odds that any new Supreme Court appointments during the final two years of Obama’s term will have to face a Republican majority. If O thinks his second term can’t get any tougher, just wait.

But that’s not all. If you missed it a few weeks ago, read Sean Trende’s probability estimates for control of the Senate over the next two election cycles. There’s a huge number of vulnerable Republicans up in 2016, making it very likely that Democrats will control the Senate again when the new president is inaugurated in 2017. That depends in part on how many seats are lost this year, though; obviously, the better the GOP does in 2014, the higher the bar for Democrats to retake the Senate will be two years from now. By Trende’s calculation, Republicans could win as many as eight seats this fall and Democrats would still be more likely than not to reclaim a majority in 2016 even if a Republican wins the presidential election. If you assume a Democratic presidential victory, the Democrats could afford to lose as many as nine seats this year and still *probably* win back the Senate in 2016. Point being, the stakes of this election are high not only for Obama in his final two years but for Hillary herself if she ends up running and winning. Want to make sure President Clinton can ram through a bunch of liberals for her cabinet and court vacancies? Better make sure you ante up for the Senate races this year, then. That’s what Axelrod’s thinking about, but whether logic can blunt the imperative among would-be Clinton courtiers to suck up early and often, I don’t know.

Via NRO, here’s Axelrod demonstrating his worry about 2014 in another way, kinda sorta nudging red-state Democrats to cut Obama loose and do what they need to do to win. Exit question: Is there more to the early noisy Hillary boosterism than meets the eye? At first I thought it was all about manufacturing an aura of inevitability to make her path through the primaries easier, but that’s unnecessary. No one, not even lefty darling Elizabeth Warren, seriously threatens Hillary. Maybe top Democrats are convinced that she’s less likely to run than everyone thinks, whether for health reasons or fatigue from the demands public life, and they’ve concluded they need to twist her arm somehow to make her do it. Constructing a prefab campaign for her, replete with lots of congressional endorsements and billionaires waving their checkbooks to make it relatively easy, might do it. Too bad for Mark Pryor and Mary Landrieu, though.

HillAREwe on February 7, 2014 at 4:52 PM

This is why Christie is so important, Hillary is worried about him…the only Republican, for a while, that polled right with her, and better in many polls.

They had to take him down, and of course “conservatives” were more than happy to assist the liberals.

If someone like Christie built up a large lead, Hillary’s support would dry up and they would have to look elsewhere, just like the libs do to the Republican’s.

These “battles” use up resources, and Hillary had to replenish to keep her in the war…

You know Allah, I just don’t see Hillary winning this thing in 2016. Hell, I don’t think she can win the dems nomination, though I am sure she might be able to.

She is old and not aging gracefully – she fails to answer her own 3AM call that she used against Obama (the correct answer was neither of them would answer it), her tenure at State was awful and realistically the fruits of her tenure will be in full bloom during the campaign.

And of course she is a terrible campaigner – just awful – and if Obama keeps sinking that will be just more weight around her ankles!!

I don’t see it.

Thats all these people can talk about: the electoral horse race and how to distribute the money to bet on their various horses. There is no political difference between the Obama team and the Clinton team, no principles that divide them. Its just one set of careerists competing with another one. Why anyone with half a brain would waste money on these people is beyond me.

Pasionaria on February 7, 2014 at 4:56 PM

Kinda funny listening to Obama hacks criticize Hillary, Inc. for not helping with Dem mid-term donations when their own team abandoned the 2010 mid-terms.

Your theory was more or less true in 2004. Senate minority leader Daschle (D-SD) lost and Republicans picked up 4 total seats to add to their majority. Granted Bush was on the ballot as well and turnout was significantly higher than it will be in 2014. It will be interesting to watch. For now I believe this poll is an outlier and the only way McConnell loses is if it happens in the primary.

Doubtful, the GOP couldn’t get that lucky. Obama tagged Bill, and Hillary by extension, as racists in 2008. The base bought it then and they haven’t forgotten it now.

Further, H.R. Clinton’s campaign was responsible for the advent of the ‘birther’ claims.

Her Favorability has dropped 10 points in the past year alone. And in the only “objective” poll I could find that was done in the past month (Quinnipiac University) her Favorability was at only 51%.

It’s only in Democrat Media “polls” that her number is higher. Wasington Compost has her at 58% but again that is a 10 point plunge from a year ago.

What she has is the adoration of the delusional. Which, unfortunately, make up quite a few voters.

The Founders weren’t stupid. She’s the very reason they did not allow parasites and women voting rights.
They knew that, by-and-large, they’d never vote for what’s right for the country, only their own immediate self-gratification. A perfectly logical idea.

Lanceman on February 7, 2014 at 5:50 PM

A lot of noise was made about the Republican primary in 2012 and the number of GOP candidates. Dems loved the beat-up-on-Romney campaign since they knew he was most likely to win the nom. But I wonder how Dems will feel when Hillary runs pretty much unopposed.

Really, who’s going to challenger her? O’Malley? He’ll be labeled a dark horse by the left and fringe by the right. He won’t last two primaries.

Biden? What’s the statue of limitations on running for president? And how could Dems possibly nominate an old white guy, even if he is currently VP?

So I wonder then, if you’re a run-of-the-mill democrat, wouldn’t you be a little put off by having your candidate selected for you? Wouldn’t the air of entitlement be a bit much to take? Maybe not, I guess. Most of them are just sheep in a herd. But it’ll start to feel a lot less like your vote matters and all of the money -that dastardly, dreadful money- will be the reason behind the coronation of Benghazi Betty.

I would categorize a little differently. The young and unestablished tend to be the parasites. Voting at 18 was a bad idea. Get married, get a job, serve in the military, these are types of things that make you a more responsible voter.

Fenris on February 7, 2014 at 6:00 PM

BKeyser on February 7, 2014 at 5:52 PM

She’s been a doormat her entire life. She won’t be the nominee.

And even if by some chance she gets it, the blacks aren’t gonna go out of their way via massive voter-fraud in black precincts to help her the way they did for black Chicago Jesus. Especially if a Booker challenges her in the primary and loses.

And every time I see you, I get a craving for a BK Double-Stacker from Burger Thing.

Lanceman on February 7, 2014 at 6:00 PM

Ok, let’s just say Hillary had no qualifications to be in the Senate (I don’t believe this).Well, she got in. Want a tissue?

HillAREwe on February 7, 2014 at 5:34 PM

I’m genuinely shocked that you admit this. (And that “I don’t believe this” is just more deflection; otherwise, you’d be shouting with glee all the acompishments in Hill’s, er, career.)

Bitter Clinger on February 7, 2014 at 6:04 PM

Pretty arrogant, Mr. Axlerod.

Clearly, you think of donations to any (D) candidate as a common pool of funds that you should be able to tap into and direct in any way you see fit.

People don’t see it like that. They may wish to support Clinton, but don’t give a squat about beating McConnell in Tennessee.

kady on February 7, 2014 at 6:05 PM

The Dem nominee is going to be Hillary. There is no doubt about that.

DisneyFan on February 7, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Would that be before or after she dodges sniper fire? Oh, yea I forgot, “What difference does that make now”,… right?

HillAREwe on February 7, 2014 at 5:34 PM

Thanks again for not answering the question.

Let’s modify that question a bit.

Please tell us what Hillary’s “Qualifications” were to be the Junior US Senator from New York.

And remember, she had never lived a day in her life in that state before she moved there to run for the Senate.

Speaking of which, please tell us why she ran for the Senate seat from New York, and what her “accomplishments” were as the Junior Senator.

Del Dolemonte on February 7, 2014 at 6:09 PM

Ok

I’ll help out HotAirLib.

1. She married Bill Clinton.
2. She turned $1,000 into $100,000 in cattle futures.
3. She was the Rose Law Firm Document Hide & Seek Champion.
4. She was the only First Lady to be subject of criminal investigation.
5. She literally got away with murder.

Feel free to use these next time Del sets a sundial for you.

One_If_By_Land on February 7, 2014 at 6:37 PM

Why are you wasting donations on 2016 when we need them for the Senate this year?

The man’s got a point, for once.

Not necessarily. Not everyone who supports the Democrats are liberals (that is, they’re not smart or informed enough to realize how slippery the slope is, and that Marx and Lenin are at the bottom) and not everyone who supports Hillary supports the Democrats.

Hillary is the ultimate LIV candidate, both because of her gender and her association with an idiotically carefree political era when the strategic peace and enormous prosperity unleashed by Reagan and defended by Gingrich’s Republicans (and, yes, her husband’s desire to to be a successful president instead of successful liberal) allowed America to tune out serious politics for a decade.

That’s a great strength for Hillary but a bit of a downer for Democrats who hope for something more. The recent polls that showed her winning large majorities were delivered on the backs of people who believe in her pantsuited competence, not her ideology. Those people aren’t writing checks to Dems because they don’t care if Dems are elected if they even want them elected at all.

HitNRun on February 7, 2014 at 6:40 PM

Democrats really do need someone to tell them how to spend their money moment by moment.

Madame Hillary has some kind of deal worked out with Univision, ostensibly to foster early childhood learning to the Hispanic community. Teach those little villagers early is the Hillary model.

onlineanalyst on February 7, 2014 at 10:41 PM

“Hillary has left a long record of scandals in the course of her “public service.” The most recent was the lies about the killing of an American ambassador and three security personnel in Benghazi on the 2012 anniversary of 9/11. Most famously, under questioning she said, “What difference does it make?” Nowhere during the course of her service as Secretary of State is there a single major international treaty or significant accomplishment. Indeed, her tenure is marked by the severe loss of respect for America and its influence over foreign affairs.”

Friendly advice-we usually avoid that subject here. Makes us look like Loons.

Besides, it’s now time for the Fuddy Troofers!

al-AP via Honalula Star-Advertiser

It could take some time before officials determine exactly how Hawaii Health Director Loretta Fuddy died, said the lead investigator for the Molokai plane crash.

It’s common for a cause of death not to be immediately known in these types of investigations, Hawaii-based National Transportation Safety Board investigator Jim Struhsaker said today.

Fuddy was the sole fatality out of nine people aboard the Makani Kai Air flight that crashed in the water soon after taking off from Kalaupapa on Dec. 11.

A passenger and the pilot have said they were shocked to hear she didn’t survive because she seemed fine in the moments after everyone got out of the plane and waited in the water for help to arrive.

It’s been a week since an autopsy was conducted.
