The State of the Union: Six down… and two to go.

posted at 11:21 pm on January 28, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

As was widely predicted, that was pretty much a nothingburger of a State of the Union, full of phantom executive actions, rehashed policy proposals that have yet to find any footing, pleading with Congress to “do something,” and the flailings of a president fighting against the imminent onslaught of lame-duckery — and kinda’ middling on some of the hardcore red meat for which some factions of the progressive base were hoping (although I have no idea where the whole “close Guantanamo” revival came from. Wut.).

There will be plenty of in-depth parsing of the speech circulating tomorrow, but in the meantime, I will say that I was wondering how the president would handle his crowning legislative achievement and its subtextual lack of popularity among both the American public and a very specific handful of Senate Democrats. Nutshell version: No, I do not apologize for ObamaCare’s shortcomings; I’m basically just going to repeat all of the usual Democratic talking points about the law’s awesomeness; and you should really go sign up.

State of the Union?

On a Teleconference Townhall with my Congresscritter tonight we had an Obamacare Reality Check.

Gentleman who had his insurance canceled in October because of Obamacare and wasn’t able to get new insurance due to the website.

And then he had a heart attack.

He is now over $ 250,000 in debt and still doesn’t have a new insurance policy in place.

An elderly woman who’s 45 year old son-in-law has cancer, lost his insurance due to Obamacare and she hasn’t been able to arrange a new policy to cover his care via Obamacare website started sobbing and was unable to continue.

Congresscritter will have his staff follow up and help as much as he can – he is actually VERY good about doing this for ALL his constituents.

I did not watch the SOTU.

I heard the TRUE State of the Union over an hour before Obama started speaking.

Stockman walks out on Obama
By Todd J. Gillman
tgillman@dallasnews.com
9:26 pm on January 28, 2014
****************************

WASHINGTON — Confession: I looked and looked for Rep. Steve Stockman in the House chamber tonight and couldn’t spot him.

His office says he walked out on the president’s State of the Union speech.

“Tonight I left early after hearing how the President is further abusing his Constitutional powers. I could not bear to watch as he continued to cross the clearly-defined boundaries of the Constitutional separation of powers,” Stockman said through an aide.

The rest of the statement:

Needless to say, I am deeply disappointed in the tone and content of tonight’s address.”

After five years in office Obama refuses to admit his policies have failed. He instead demands we double down on the bitter class warfare that has left Americans jobless and hopeless.

Obama’s plan for higher taxes and more spending is a blueprint for perpetual poverty. The last thing America needs is more of the Democrats’ class warfare that has left our economy a barren landscape.

Even worse, Obama has openly vowed to break his oath of office and begin enacting his own brand of law through executive decree. This is a wholesale violation of his oath of office and a disqualifying offense.

If people aren’t following/reading Matt Walsh’s blog you are seriously missing out.

I’ll quote the first two paragraphs:

Last week, if you tuned into the Grammys, you were treated to a gaudy spectacle of pretentious elitists, wealthy drug addicts and godless Satanists patting each other on the back and congratulating themselves for another year spent dumping toxic waste directly into America’s soul.

If you watched the State of the Union address tonight, you saw the exact same sort of thing all over again. Except with less dancing. And more clothing (thank God).

Link here.

Definitely worth looking through the archives. In the short time that I’ve been fortunate enough to read his blog, I’d put him on par with Mark Steyn. He’s that good, imho.

Scrumpy on January 29, 2014 at 12:09 AM

Evening, Scrumpy!

My congresscritter was asked this EXACT question during the Teleconference Townhall tonight.

His reply was,

“No – and I’ll explain why. I was one of the managers in the House of the impeachment of Clinton. Having gone through that experience in reality, the problem with that approach now is there is not the political will in the House to pursue impeachment. As things currently sit, it would fail and would give the media a field day in attacking those who pursue it. Darrel Issa is doing very good work with his committee and will NOT back off on all of the bad things the Obama administration has done.”

For any who thinks this sounds like weak sauce – this gentleman’s voting record is EXTREMELY conservative compared to the rest of the House. As he mentioned tonight, he and two others are tied for the most fiscally conservative voting records among current House members.

Or phrased another way, I like him even though he is a politician.

There is no and never was a man behind the curtain. Barack Obama is a shallow, conceited, poorly educated man; his oratory is empty, his sincerity is absent; and his character is mimetic. He plays at various roles (community organizer, intellectual, law lecturer, state legislator, Senator, President) but fulfills none. He is not capable of fulfilling any. To traduce Gertrude Stein’s phrase, he is our Oakland President; there is no there there.

Well, ol’ John is endorsing the ‘rat Mark Warner and both he and that crybaby Lugar are endorsing Michelle Nunn in Georgia.

And now it appears that Mark Kirk is cozying up to Tammy Duckworth in Illinois.

Yeah. Tell me again how we should have run Mike Castle over O’Donnell?

Bastard’d prolly be endorsing Booker.

I apologize. That wasn’t very nice of me.
Brad Thor is an author and a patriot. He worked with DHS, before it turned into a illegal alien welcoming agency, on their Analytical Red Cell Unit, a program to identify targets of terrorism.

Unfortunately, he’s also incredibly naive re: Issa, who has achieved exactly squat.

Midas on January 29, 2014 at 12:23 AM

.
No, he’s a politician who is way further right than the Republican Party (might be a little farther right than the average Tea Party member of Congress) and who gave a “reasoned answer” on a public teleconference.

I’m old enough to have tracked in real time the unfolding of Watergate. There was an enormous amount of not “achieving squat” before the tide turned and what had been ignored & belittled turned into the things which brought down the second most arrogant President.

With regard to the SCOAMF? He is stooge who has no inherent capabilities for the job he holds.

I don’t spend a second of my day worrying about the SCOAMF’s impeachment. There are much more pressing problems in the world.

China’s financial instability and the political instability the springs from it.

The eventual “reversion to mean” in global financial markets. Anyone who believes QE Forever will work forever is dangerously insane.

Putin’s expansionistic aspirations and how they will play out.

China’s reaction to Putins Putin’s expansionistic aspirations.

The complete abandonment of Israel and Saudi Arabia by the Obama administration with regard to Iran. Iran is 2 – 3 weeks from producing a nuclear weapon – there will be a preemptive strike before either Israel or Saudi Arabia will allow that to happen – and then all HELL will be out for noon.
