The State of the Union: Six down… and two to go.

posted at 11:21 pm on January 28, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

As was widely predicted, that was pretty much a nothingburger of a State of the Union, full of phantom executive actions, rehashed policy proposals that have yet to find any footing, pleading with Congress to “do something,” and the flailings of a president fighting against the imminent onslaught of lame-duckery — and kinda’ middling on some of the hardcore red meat for which some factions of the progressive base were hoping (although I have no idea where the whole “close Guantanamo” revival came from. Wut.).

There will be plenty of in-depth parsing of the speech circulating tomorrow, but in the meantime, I will say that I was wondering how the president would handle his crowning legislative achievement and its subtextual lack of popularity among both the American public and a very specific handful of Senate Democrats. Nutshell version: No, I do not apologize for ObamaCare’s shortcomings; I’m basically just going to repeat all of the usual Democratic talking points about the law’s awesomeness; and you should really go sign up.

I should have watched “Criminal Minds” last night. Same thing.

kingsjester on January 29, 2014 at 6:56 AM

I didn’t watch the SOTU for the simple fact that it is clearly documented that he’s given virtually the same speech like three times- complete with the same lines where he sits there expectantly until the trained baboons realize they are supposed to jump to their feet and applaud as if there was some sort of brilliance in what was just read from TOTUS.

But speaking of the new twist that he’ll rule by fiat…… It isn’t the EOs that are offensive. It is what they are for. Nobody would argue against the need and appropriateness of EOs to run the Executive Branch. That doesn’t mean it appropriate to use them to give de facto amnesty to a bunch of illegals because Congress won’t pass your amnesty bill.

NSA leaker Edward Snowden nominated for 2014 Nobel Peace Prize by 2 Norweigan politicians

canopfor on January 29, 2014 at 6:51 AM

It would be more newsworthy if it were two US politicians. Nevertheless, Snowden is the toast of the anti-US crowd so it is small wonder that he’d be nominated. Though how these leaks contributed to peace is as unclear as giving the prize to a lazy stupid community organizer without any discernible accomplishments.

BuckeyeSam on January 29, 2014 at 7:07 AM

Of all the issues the Dems are trying to divide the nation with, amnesty for the illegals is probably the most likely to get some bipartisan support.

But words are important here. There is nothing in the amnesty schemes that have anything to do with immigration or immigration reform. We need to keep hammering this point home. The nation has an immigration policy. All this talk about rewarding illegal aliens for being on the right side of the border when the music stops (like some sort of twisted version of musical chairs) is offensive. We owe it to all those who are seeking legal status the right way to NOT reward illegal aliens. It is a matter of fairness not some sort of xenophobia.

We’ll see. I think they’re still test marketing how to approach amnesty. Rubio and McCain destroyed the “path to citizenship” theme because it became clear that the path was very short and demanded nothing of the illegals.

The latest scheme is a GOP statement of principles. Which, from what I can tell, is a statement of support of amnesty so long as they can find a way of selling it.

Biden isn’t going to run. He’s not even polling second behind Killary. And what would he run on after sitting in the current administration without and discernible accomplishment? He was given the job of mucking up the SOFA with Iraq so badly that the US had to pull out completely. He was given the lead on pushing gun grabbing through Congress and all he achieved is a memorable gaffe about “buy a shotgun.” Killary already has her stormtroopers on the ground in Iowa. Biden (from what I can see) has yet to even have the most nascent of campaign organizations.

Some seem to take comfort in the fact that Obama spent little time on the topic last night. I had that immediate reaction. Then, I heard today some people say that GOP leadership told Obama that if he wants anything done on immigration, he should shut up.

I phucking hate Boehner. He gives this man-of-the-people schtick when–and I don’t envy anyone anything–he lives in the same damn gated community here in SW Ohio as one of the members of my family. Boehner and his will never have to deal with the consequences of illegal immigrants. Indeed, I think he’s just looking to ensure lower cost yardwork for the common areas and golf course of his gated community.

I think he only has one speech- it’s called “Worship My Totally Awesome Awesomeness”. Probably because it works so well on a compliant media that’s been fighting over which one of them gives him his next BJ since he first showed up.

Other than that, it consisted mainly of him insisting everything will work if we Just Let Him Have More Power. With a side order of Obey Me Or Else.

If he’d added, “This (nation/world) can be a paradise, if we are wiling to pay the price”, it would be the Gill Fallacy in full flower. But I think AlGore and the deep-ecos who are nuttier than he is already pre-empted that line.

The one good thing about this POTUS and his dog-and-pony show is that he has had virtually unbridled freedom to pursue progressive dogmas for his entire reign. If they don’t work, it can’t be because they were somehow “sabotaged”, it can only be because in the real world, they don’t work.

Just don’t expect The One or his acolytes to admit it.

Obama: Constitutional Scholar

sadatoni on January 29, 2014 at 7:22 AM

As many others have pointed out in the past, BO’s “Constitutional Scholar” schtick is way overblown and is just another of his mis-direction issues.

Look at it this way… A bank robber doesn’t study a bank’s security system because he wants to be a security expert. He’s looking for holes and ways to circumvent or otherwise exploit the system in order to take advantage of those using it for protection.

BO studied the Constitution for the same reasons.
