More Hillary: My biggest regret is Benghazi

posted at 6:01 pm on January 27, 2014 by Allahpundit

Via Politico. My silly first reaction to this was, “Wow, she basically just admitted that the Republicans slamming her over this for the past 16 months have a point.” But what else could she say? Imagine the uproar if she had answered a question about her biggest regret and didn’t say “Benghazi.” There’s no spinning this issue away. Her best move is to own it, as she did here, and trust that the left and the media will continue to treat outrage over Benghazi as an artifact of partisanship. Yes, it was her job to provide security for a consulate in a notoriously dangerous area, and sure, she failed to do that, and okay, Americans were murdered, but these wingnuts simply will. not. let. it. go. I think she trusts that her team can get deep enough in the weeds on security protocols and CIA coordination and bureaucracy, etc etc, to convince swing voters that it’s only nominally her fault, not actually her fault, which would make this a minor liability in the campaign. Throw enough mind-numbing he-said-she-said partisan bickering at low-information voters and they’ll throw their hands up and dismiss the whole subject as one whose truth will never really be known. Hillary will happily settle for that.

Where Benghazi might hurt her a bit is as an attack on her vaunted “experience.” She may lack for accomplishments but she doesn’t lack for credentials; the eventual GOP nominee will almost certainly be seen by most voters as greener than Hillary is. “Benghazi” is thus a byword for how little her supposed experience mattered to Americans under her command. That’s one reason why Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have been so prominent in attacking her on it, I think — it’s an unusually efficient way to reduce her “experience” advantage over legislators who are still in their first terms. (For Paul, ripping her on lax security is also a way for him to build some credibility as a kinda sorta hawk.) The whole thrust of the Republican message in the next campaign will be that Hopenchange and its Clintonian inheritors are, despite their claims to expertise and “smart power,” fundamentally incompetent in their management of the country domestically and abroad. They saw the problems with the ObamaCare website coming and they blew it. They saw the security problems in Benghazi coming and they blew that. They saw the Iranian nuke program developing for years and years and, by the end of O’s term, they’ll have blown that too. Although, ironically, if/when Obama fumbles the ball on Iran, that’ll undermine another potential GOP argument against Hillary — namely, that her successor at State was much more successful than she was. I like using Kerry as a yardstick for Hillary since it exposes the modesty of her own resume in such stark terms, but since Kerry will probably end up praising her to the skies in the next campaign, it’d probably backfire.

Two clips here, one of Hillary and the other of Newt Gingrich from a week ago warning the GOP that you can’t expect to beat her by playing small ball. And Benghazi, for presidential campaign purposes, with the country consumed by the economic forecast and the future of health care, is small ball.

Because she was “caught” lying?

Whatever, Hillary. You’ll say ANYTHING if you think it will get you elected.

Killary wasn’t involved with the economy, she’s going to brush it off that way and of course present a raft of “new” ideas to really get the nation going again.

Hit the old girl with everything including the kitchen sink from the Benghazi embassy and make her relive and defend it every single day until November.

If the Clintons taught America anything, it’s that character doesn’t matter.

She regrets it NOW? What difference, at this point, does it make?

Hillary! has as much “experience” and “competence” as King Barack.

And look where that’s gotten us over the last 5 years.

That would be a great bumper sticker or yard sign.

Hilarity from the Low-IQ Dems posting in the Politico comments.

Hillary is God!

9/11 was avoidable.

Many of the other embassy, consulate and outpost attacks during other administrations were avoidable.

But no one politicized those….

…had 9/11 happened on Al Gore’s watch, the GOP would not have come together. They would have politicized the tragedy just as they did in Benghazi.

…anyone who was around during 9/11 recognizes that the Democrats did not politicize the tragedy.

Clinton did not pass on getting Bin Laden.

This event marks the official beginning of her campaign. Advisers have told her the first thing to work on is defusing the Benghazi bomb.

“My biggest, you know, regret is what happened in Benghazi. It was a terrible tragedy, losing four Americans two diplomats and now it’s public, so I can say two CIA operatives” Clinton said.

Not what she did…”what happened”.

“and now it’s public,so I can say two CIA operatives”…CIA op; not the State Departments fault.

Murphy9 on January 27, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Hey she isn’t called Killary just because of Vince Foster. But she lied her ass off on 9/12/12. A tale of locals risking all to help Ambassador Stevens after a spontaneous attack. Of rushing Stevens to the hospital in an attempt to save his life. Of an offensive video that caused it all. Her regret is clearly that she’s still being held accountable after a bogus “review board” and an arrogant appearance in front of Congress.

And keep in mind we know she’s a filthy liar. Tales of dodging bullets in Bosnia. Tales of being named after an explorer who hadn’t done anything noteworthy until she was three. A whole slew of “I don’t recall” statements over her expertise in cattle futures. If she’s the Dems best chance of winning in 2016, then they had better worry about her past. She will be better vetted than the rat-eared wonder.

“and now it’s public”…I would have been more forthcoming in the first place but it would have endangered national secrets

So will Hillary go meet with the families of the people that died and explain what happened???

That is what I thought.

redguy on January 27, 2014 at 6:41 PM

I can’t stand her, but must admit that this was a brilliant move.
They have used the “this is old news” strategy quite successfully many times before.
On this last Sunday’s Meet The Press, MoveOn was invoked as an example of how to approach Hillary’s run for POTUS.
It’s amazing what one can accomplish when one has no shame…and help from equally shameless apparatchiks.

She must be chock full of regrets. She’s been a failure all of her life. Except for riding Billy horndog’s coat-tail, her sole accomplishment in her lackluster, smoke-and-mirrors career.

Unless I am mistaken, the background she was speaking against in this video said “NADA“, which is precisely what she did to defend american lives in Benghazi.

When the “3AM call” comes in, count on Hillary to be unavailable.

virgo on January 28, 2014 at 12:02 AM

When you say ‘It is Benghazi’, do you mean…

Hiring an All Qaeda-associated militia to guard Ambassador Stevens and other Americans in Benghazi?

Not providing additional security, even after 2 previous terrorist attacks & numerous pleas from Stevens for more security, to include a warning that if he didn’t get it he would die?

For changing the CIA’s cable 13 times, the cable to you and Obama within an hour of the start of the attack telling you it was a terrorist attack, then lying about it being all over a video?

For refusing to meet with members of the family of he men you and Obama betrayed and abandoned to die during a 12-hour attack during which these men fought for help you ensured would never arrive, in part to keep Obama’s gun running operation to jihadists in Syria a secret?

Or do you mean you regret GETTING CAUGHT and this jepordizing your ‘turn’ to e President based on your credentials of being a disgraced Watergate lawyer, the wife and enabler of a career womanizer / sexual harrasser, and the worst Secretary of State in U.S. history responsible for failing to prepare and protect 20 embassies that were attacked throughout the Middle East on your watch on the anniversary of 9/11/01 – 4 burned/overrun & 4 Americans abandoned/betrayed/left to die?!

easyt65 on January 28, 2014 at 12:08 AM

Being the studlier of the Clintons, I understand how she is trying to get out in front of the Benghazi accountability attacks that will be directed at her. I only hope now that she is in front of it, it will run her over. Of course the media will twist themselves into pretzels to protect her.

ghostwalker1 on January 28, 2014 at 12:23 AM

The idea that such a despicable, self-serving political, power-lusting, corrupt human being would so callously and calculatingly seek to spin and thus minimize the deaths of 4 Americans she helped betray/abandon, who she then lied about for personal gain, and now refuses to meet with the family members is nauseating and infuriating at the same time.

While Hillary does have more experience than Obama did when he became President, her experience is limited to failure and shame. Again, she is a disgraced Watergate lawyer, stayed with Bill only to ride his coat tail while he was busy riding other women, shadily become a Senator for a state in which she was never ‘truly’ a ‘resident’, argued she was the best to answer the proverbial 1am emergency phone call as President, was AWOL on the day – the anniversary of 9/11/01 – 20 embassies throughout the Middle East were attacked and while 4 Americans she not only failed to protect but who she abandoned and betrayed were killed. She then lied about the whole thing to protect her chance to run for President. She refuses to meet with the family members…and much like during her and Slick Willey’s good ol’ days, 15 witnesses who could testify about what happened in Benghazi are coincidently DEAD!

THAT IS HER RESUME…an we are still being forced to consider her as a serious 2016 candidate?! What the h@all has happened to this country?!

easyt65 on January 28, 2014 at 6:03 AM

The question that the Manure Spreading Media will NEVER ASK her.
“Where were you and what were you doing the night Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Soherty and Tyrone Woods were murdered in Bengahzi, Libya?

Missilengr on January 28, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Hillary Rodham won’t be able to “put Benghazi behind her” with statements like this:

“I mean, you know, you, you make these choices based on imperfect information, and you make them to, to, as we say, the best of your ability, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not gonna be unforeseen consequences, unpredictable twists and turns. You know, my, my, my, biggest, you know, regret, that is what happened in Benghazi. Uh, it was a terrible tragedy, uh, losing four Americans, two, uh, diplomats and now it’s public so I can say two CIA operatives, losing an ambassador like Chris Stevens, who was one of our very best and had served in Libya and across the Middle East and spoke Arabic.”
