Media, White House erupt at Huckabee for saying something about Democrats and women’s libidos

posted at 4:06 pm on January 23, 2014 by Allahpundit

Does it really matter what he said? The liberal thought process on this works this way, I think: “Known social conservative + something about women + something about sex and birth control = outrage.” Right? It’s basically Pavlovian. Which is why even many Republicans who sympathize with social conservatism rub their temples at the thought of nominating a loud-and-proud social con as nominee. You don’t want biased, soft-headed media lefties setting the parameters for who you can nominate, but on the other hand, if you know your guy’s going to spend the campaign tapdancing around soundbite landmines — sometimes justifiably, sometimes not — why bother?

This is, as anyone who reads at a third-grade level will tell you, a shot at Democrats for practicing an especially narrow form of identity politics, not at women.

If there’s any conservative who’s stood boldly against big government and Uncle Sugar in his career, it’s Huck. Ah well. Pavlov’s bell having sounded, the salivation begins:

White House press secretary Jay Carney dismissed comments by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at a Republican meeting Thursday as “offensive.”

“Whoever said it, it sounds offensive to me, and to women,” Carney told reporters after saying he hadn’t seen reports of Huckabee’s remarks.

I like the way he put that — “it sounds offensive,” as though he’s not sure but heard just enough offense-triggering buzzwords when it was read to him that there could, logically, be only one conclusion. Exactly my point up top. Whether it is offensive isn’t important, especially in the initial rush to denounce and capitalize politically. It sounds offensive. Close enough.

Once the media settles down, they’ll zero in on the part of what Huckabee said that does deserve scrutiny, the bit at the end about birth control as the province of people who can’t control their urges. That’s his way as a devout Christian of giving thumbs down to fornication, I take it; if you’re not practicing premarital abstinence, it must be because you’re incapable on some level and need contraception to protect you from the consequences. Not so. Plenty of people could pass on recreational sex but choose not to because they don’t see the moral harm in it that Huck does. See Ace for more on that. I thought the party had moved on from squabbling about contraception, especially after the upset when Stephanopoulos blindsided Romney with a question about it during the primary debates in 2012, but it’s hard to move on when you’ve got a would-be presidential candidate disapprovingly identifying some sort of irresistible compulsion to the way most people behave sexually. See what I mean about landmines of his own making?

Really, though, even though I don’t care too much for Huck, this is just another sign that progs are feeling desperate. They are manufacturing and propagating any sort of lie or smear they can, constantly.

AP, you are every bit as astute as Carney. Read what Huck said one more time. Concentrate if you can, on the part about Democrats treat women as if. I have no idea why you get to blog here. I guess Michele must have lost a bet.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on January 23, 2014 at 6:19 PM

You are aware that Obama won voters with graduate degree’s right? So that means that the more educated you are, the more likely you are to vote democratic. Try to think of some insults that are based in reality and not in your imagination.

Ric on January 23, 2014 at 4:50 PM

You do know that those with graduate degree’s are more likely to work in fields that benefit from huge amounts of government subsidies, don’t cha.

And the reality is that many graduate degree’s don’t make you educated or intelligent. They just mean you spent all your adult life in school.

HumpBot Salvation on January 23, 2014 at 6:21 PM

And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it.

Dork that Huckabee is, he isn’t saying women can’t control their libidos, he’s saying democratics are saying women can’t control their libidos.

jaime on January 23, 2014 at 6:05 PM

That is not what the Democrat women find offensive in what he said. It was that he was saying they should control their libidos.

Why should they be expected to do that when they have the right to just pop a taxpayer provided pill and start banging away?

Murphy9 on January 23, 2014 at 6:33 PM

And what he said was factually incorrect considering that hs dropouts only make up 8% of the population. Which isn’t nearly big enough to provide a electoral majority. The democratic base is made up of east and west coast voters based in large cities. Contrast this to Republican base which is made up of rural and sub urban voters based in the Midwest and south which in the aggregate are less educated and wealthy. Facts are stubborn things.

Ric on January 23, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Obama I think won the dropout vote. “Rural and suburban voters in the Midwest and South” does not automatically mean “dumber or even ‘less educated’ than your typical Upper West Side prog”. Just maybe not as smug. Also, it seems that the ones who are most awed by the “college educated” label are the ones who never went or who didn’t finish and don’t have much of an idea what a dog-and-pony-show is “college education” (in the humanities and social sciences, anyway).

I thought everyone already knew this. Those with some college or 4 year degrees tend to be Republican. Those with graduate degrees tend to be Democrats. Those with H.S. degrees or less tend to be Democrats.

Those with college degrees tend to be doing okay even in this economy. Those without college degrees are losing ground as the combination of ‘free trade’ (screw the American worker trade) and out of control immigration sucks the life out of the value of unskilled and low skill labor.

Also, the rich are now voting more Democrat than Republican. It’s easier bribing Democrats.

This stuff is basic. If you don’t know it, you can’t understand why the politicians do what they do.

1.) Huckabee is completely correct here, including the comments about women being more than an uncontrollable libido, and it’s high time that we reintroduce to the American lexicon a notion of restraint and responsibility.

2.) Yes, social issues matter.

3.) People decrying fighting on social issues need to get over it. The left is not going to stop on it, and by surrendering the field you only ensure their victory.

I know that Huck is not exactly popular with a lot of HA readers, but I am not overly concerned with him pulling an Akin, Miller, witch-lady, idiot in Nevada etc… This guy actually blew the competition off the stage at every debate in 2008. The rest consisted of Mitt stammering, Rudy hiding, RP hating on America and McCain dozing.

I don’t have a single problem with what Huckabee said. The left sees the “little people” as stupid proles who do nothing but drink beer and have sex. They must be given free birth control because they’re just incapable of going out, getting a job and paying for it themselves. Their contempt for all people and women in particular is breathtaking.

The part about libido and control is offensive…

1) To non-social agenda conservative men and women
2) To non-Christian conservatives who may not have the same moral compass as Huck
3) To Christian conservatives who may not have the same moral compass as Huck

While I agree that the government should not be the traffic cop for a person reproductive choices, or their sexual appetites, conservatives are going to loose this battle if they keep equating women with their sexual activity with government intervention with birth control.

It’s two different issues and putting them together the way Huck did… IS insulting.

Alright. Let’s point out the painfully obvious in Huckabee’s quote:

Women I know are outraged that Democrats think that women are nothing more than helpless and hopeless creatures whose only goal in life is to have a government provide for them birth control medication. Women I know are smart, educated, intelligent, and capable of doing anything anyone else can do. Our party stands for the equality of women and the capacity of women… And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them each month a prescription for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it, let’s take that discussion all across America because women are far more than Democrats have made them to be.

Easy. Huck is a social conservative. Huck is a staunch Christian. We know that Huck believes in “traditional values.” Any comment by him talking about a woman’s libido is going to raise hackles.

“I think it has come to a point in our culture where political correctness has made it so if you want to take a point of view, it is traditional, it holds to steadfast old fashioned biblical, Christian values — which are also, by the way, the traditional values of Judaism and Islam — somehow you’re supposed to just shut up and keep that to yourself,” Huckabee told host Chris Wallace.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/12/22/mike-huckabee-phil-robertson-holds-same-position-on-same-sex-marriage-as-obama/

We know where he is coming from and this sort of position will be the downfall of the conservative party. I wish it weren’t true, but times they are changing. And if the GOP is really concerned about reigning government in, then they should stick to that.

Strong social conservatives like Huck, currently, are dinosaurs.

ROFLMAO, another ignorant progtard reciting the old blue state vs red state meme. LOL

You do know, fukktard, that the majority of FED $ going back to the states is in the form of Social Security and Medicare (both libtard programs by the way). Who gets SS and Medicare? Oh yeah, old retired people who have paid into the system all their lives. Which means they are getting what they contributed during their working years back while sending less $ back to the Feds for income tax. What states have an older/retired population? Oh yeah, the red ones.

The other big chunk of Fed $ going back to the states is for the military, federal land management and indian lands…what states have more military bases, national parks, federal managed land and large indian reservations? Why it’s aA couple of those southern conservative states like ME and AK that are on your list.

The other portion is medicaid and welfare. On a per capita basis you are more likely to be an obama voter if you take medicaid regardless of what state you live in.

Welfare NY and CA get 40%+ of all the FEDERAL funds for WELFARE sent to the states.

And all that money flowing from the “Blue States”? It’s not coming from the “blue voters” in those states. It’s coming from the wealthy who overwhelmingly vote “red”.

You do know that the “blue states” have quite a few more corporations which send their tax money from that state to the feds. You do know that most corporations derive their income from all across the US from both red and blue states.

So sorry scooter…you’re as ignorant as Ric. You must be one of the high school dropouts that vote democrat.

Your money can sit on the back burner for the time being. Issues like the protection of the most innocent and helpless, as well as the destructive cultural influence of the left are much larger problems than the minutiae of marginal tax rates.

The last GOP president was George W. Bush, a socially conservative stalwart. The last 2 GOP presidential candidates have been anything from silent on social issues, to having liberal pasts. Even if we go with your assumption that a social conservative will lose, if it doesn’t change the ultimate outcome from what’s happened before with candidates that aren’t socially conservative, then there’s no harm, no foul.

Evidently you didn’t pay attention to the entire campaign of the GOP’s nominee in 2012. Romney was the first governor to ever implement gay marriage, he was the guy who was the forefather of Obmacare, and he incessantly ranted about how awful regulations were destroying businesses. This comes from a man who also argued that the rationale for his campaign stemmed from his experience as a businessman.

Stoic Patriot on January 23, 2014 at 9:22 PM

The Huckster goes a-trolling. Well done, sir.

kim roy on January 23, 2014 at 9:31 PM

Easy. Huck is a social conservative. Huck is a staunch Christian. We know that Huck believes in “traditional values.” Any comment by him talking about a woman’s libido is going to raise hackles.

Well, among your little sliver of solibs, which isn’t really as large as you might like to fantasize it is. If someone is a socon, a staunch Christian, and believes in “traditional values”, they’re not allowed to speak?

We know where he is coming from and this sort of position will be the downfall of the conservative party.

There is no such thing at this point as a “conservative party”.

I wish it weren’t true, but times they are changing. And if the GOP is really concerned about reigning government in, then they should stick to that.

Haven’t you heard? “reining in the government” marks you as a dinosaur. “You’re on the wrong side of history!!!!” appears again.

Strong social conservatives like Huck, currently, are dinosaurs.

Walter L. Newton on January 23, 2014 at 8:21 PM

What’s a “strong social conservative”, anyway?

Forcing insurance companies to cover birth control is one thing.
Making the leap that women who gets “free” birth control makes them dependent, or out of control is absurd.

Odds are they become future Demoncrats, or criminals.

He’s Christie with a Southern drawl.

casuist on January 24, 2014 at 6:55 AM

Yet he lost. Romney continually espoused lower taxes, smaller government, and less regulation

Never believed him. His record of governance and his constantly changing stories flatly contradicted any claim to wanting to lower taxes or reduce government. His only accomplishment while in office was RomneyCare, the same botch of policy now foisted on us nationally.

casuist on January 24, 2014 at 6:59 AM

Not disappointed to see Huck flame out but every word he says is true. Obama waves food stamps/welfare in front of minorities, extended unemployment in front of unemployed, amnesty in front of illegals, free birth control in front of women, universal healthcare in front of libs and they all follow him like the Pied Piper. He’s got nothing in his back of tricks for Conservatives and he blames that on Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

ctmom on January 24, 2014 at 7:35 AM

I am not a fan of Huckabee. So let’s get that out of the way.

But here is my question; do Democrats believe women are that shallow, that they cannot read his comments and understand what he has stated?

That would be as opposed to the Democrats obviously political interpretation meant to do nothing but distort, distract and provoke an emotional response?

Furthermore, what’s the implication here? Is it that Republicans who are husbands, fathers, brothers and so forth- as a group don’t care about women’s issues?

What absolute, insulting tripe.

Democrats sole purpose is to distract people with shiny objects away from the destructive financial and family landscape they have created with their “ideas”. But people see the reality in their paychecks, unemployed family members, the loss of their healthcare, the loss of their homes, the inability to send children to college, the substantial bite taxes take out of their paychecks, the failing of their school systems and many other terrible effects.

That is the reality of our situation. Not some false meme they’ve created out of some obscure persons statement.

Marcus Traianus on January 24, 2014 at 7:48 AM

It really doesn’t make a difference what a conservative says the MSM will help our democratic friends find something offensive in it. You could say the sky is blue and the Democrats would be telling people how you hate Seattle, that doesn’t have a lot of blue skies and you’re really rubbing it in.

I’ve watched the Democrats operate for many years and they are the most divisive party that ever was, I believe. THere isn’t a day goes by when they aren’t out there saying something to divide the country, in one way or another.

They’d better be careful, their monopoly, with the MSM, is over and 99% of what Huckabee is true. Once you have women really thinking about what the Democrats are doing to them, things change. The Democrats have had the same playbook for years, sooner or later, it’s not going to work.

bflat879 on January 24, 2014 at 7:52 AM

This is a big nothing burger. Did Huckabee say anything that wasn’t true?

No.

AP nailed it in the post:

Known social conservative + something about women + something about sex and birth control = outrage.

Yawn. Can the libs please get a new playbook?

You can’t spell demo with out Democrats. Their intent is to tear down, to pillage, to leave in ruins. Look at Detroit. Sadly, they also like to “Detroit” people. Yet, they somehow they cast themselves as caring about the poor, the middle class… the very people they cripple and enslave. They are master manipulators.

Grrr…

I am so tired of marxists anteing up these particular statistics. Every district and state on the list, except WV, have heave military facilities or military support facilities. I suppose, you being a marxist and such, you expect the people of those states to provide their labor to the federal government cheaper than the workers in your state. Those states have climate and access to the seas, generally year round. As for Maine, ever heard of the Bath Shipyards or the Kittery/Portsmouth complex.

Of course to get those extra dollars, the rest of us are required to provide bombing ranges, impact ranges, and schools without tax support.

OK has Fort Sill (the nations Artillery school, Tinker, the largest ALC in the world, Vance and Altus, the air training centers for both heavy and light (it takes lots of sky to have a training center) and the Savannah depot, for all services guns and bombs. That is just one state and not listed in your list.

I object to the idiot that said us folks in fly-over county are just dumb hicks. I have an engineering degree from one of the most prestigious Universities in the world, with patents and 55 years of work history to prove it. The so-called middle class of this area provides the largest Military and Civilian ALCs in the world, the training base for pipeline welders. Over half the heat transfer equipment in the world is made here, most of the aircraft simulators. and on and on.

I suppose the bankers and brokers of the East coast coast are more important and smarter. I suppose the hollywood marxists are more important in the eyes of the troll posters here.

I’m sorry for the chamber of commerce speech. I’m just tired of being put down by children in their momma’s basement.

In the words of our local dust bowl communist and national hero:

Our parents forgot to get married.
Our parents forgot to get wed.
When the wedding bells chimed, it was always the time
Our parents were somewhere in bed.
So thanks to our kind hearted parents,
We’re kings in the land of the free.
The banker, the broker, the washington joker, three prominent bast..ds are we.

It doesn’t work that way. A skillful dodging of the question might work a time or two, but any more and it looks like you are trying to hide something. That just makes it worse.

What conservatives who go the whole personhood at conception route have to do is realize that being elected a representative in a republican democracy doesn’t make you those voters’ RULER.

When you are a public servant doing the People’s bidding as a governor or legislator, your job is to lead, not to rule. If the People do not want to go there, you don’t drag them, no matter how important you think it is. You keep trying to persuade them.

“He knew the voters would can him if he voted that way, but he is a principled man, and so he did it anyway” is despicable hogwash.

Leaders in a republican democracy are supposed to persuade, not coerce.
