USDA: Record 20 percent of American households used food stamps in 2013

posted at 2:01 pm on January 22, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

The Obama administration has an unfortunately deliberate penchant for talking out of both sides of its mouth when it comes to touting the slow-going economic “recovery” through which they have been leading the country for the past five years; on the one hand, they insist, the private sector is creating jobs, we’re making steady economic gains, and things are definitely improving. On the other, however, there’s “still more work to be done,” and despite the manifold economic improvements, they assert that the further expansion of entitlement programs like unemployment benefits and food stamps are an absolute necessity to keeping their “recovery” going — and on the latter especially, the Obama administration has been particularly aggressive. CNS News reports that, even in the first year of President Obama’s second term, the federal food-stamp program continued to grow, with a record 20 percent of American households and a record number of individuals participated in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — and that the program itself reached its record-high budget.

The USDA says that there were 23,052,388 households on food stamps in the average month of fiscal 2013, an increase of 722,675 from fiscal year 2012, when there were 22,329,713 households on food stamps in the average month. …

In 2013, the monthly average for individuals on food stamps hit an all-time-high of 47,636,084, according to the USDA, an increase of 1,027,012 over the  46,609,072 individuals who were participating in the program in 2012. …

For fiscal year 2013, the SNAP program cost $79,641,880,000, which is a 164% increase over the past decade. When adjusted for inflation, the cost of the SNAP program was $30,153,090,000 in fiscal year 2003.

individuals on food stamps

Why, exactly, is it a victory of our economic “recovery” to vastly grow a program designed to temporarily help Americans in need of economic assistance, and why exactly is the program failing to add all the “economic stimulus” the administration promised it would? The version of the farm bill on which lawmakers are currently conferring has sought out a compromise-cut to the almost $80 billion annual program in the form of $9 billion over ten years, but no doubt Democrats will object to even that relatively small budgetary reduction by clobbering Republicans over the head with “draconian”-style demagoguery — rather than asking themselves why it is the continual expansion of the program seems to be so necessary in the midst of the Obama “recovery.”

1 out of every 5 households on food stamps is a disgrace. I can’t even fathom that statistic. We ain’t gonna have much of a middle class left by the time Obama leaves office in 3 years(yes, we have that long to go).

Considered going on them myself. I figured if a majority of Americans, by dint of their re-election of a marxist charlatan, were OK with having some of their wealth taken from them and redistributed to me, then why not?

My conservative principles, coupled with a healthy sense of shame, got the better of me.

This is the real “Chicago Way”. You get everyone and their brother and sister on the government dole, one way or another, and everyone votes for you. You create and maintain dependent majorities until the system collapses. Takes decades for a city, or a county, but a country can limp along – getting worse and worse – for a while. The Choom Gang took the concept national, and it’s working as expected. The traditions of the country and citizenry gets ripped apart but they couldn’t care less.

aquaviva on January 22, 2014 at 2:21 PM

Just like unemployment figures that do not count people who have given up looking for work, it is much worse. 20% doesn’t include people being fed via charities, food banks, private individuals, friends and family, etc.

Obama quote from the headlines:

“what the E.I.T.C. has done, starting with him, being added to by Clinton, being used by me during the Recovery Act, has probably kept more people out of poverty than a whole lot of other government programs that are currently in place.”

Obama thinks more people on food stamps is a success.

Nothing like a triple ObamiNation record:

- 20% of households on food stamps
- 15.1% of all individuals serfs on food stamps
- A record amount of money, even after adjusting for inflation, spent on food stamps

I believe the proto-Communists in DC have a word for that – PROGRESS! Progress to Cuba, yeah. Progress in actually winning the War on Poverty (assuming the goal is to beat poverty and not wealth), not so much.

Steve Eggleston on January 22, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Well, he has all those people looking for jobs, on unemployment, those who gave up are now on food stamps and disability, which serves 2 purposes. First, it keeps the people with the pitchforks off his front lawn, secondly they’ll vote for Democrats because they haven’t figured out that, if they vote for Republicans they’ll have a job, they just hear the Democrats saying they’re going to lose their food stamps and unemployment checks.

Why, exactly, is it a victory of our economic “recovery” to vastly grow a program designed to temporarily help Americans in need of economic assistance, and why exactly is the program failing to add all the “economic stimulus” the administration promised it would?

The above question reminded me of this:

As short a time ago as February, the Ministry of Plenty had issued a promise (a ‘categorical pledge’ were the official words) that there would be no reduction of the chocolate ration during 1984. Actually, as Winston was aware, the chocolate ration was to be reduced from thirty grammes to twenty at the end of the present week.

No sooner is it announced that 20% of Americans are on food stamps than real-life versions of Winston Smith will be out there touting the economic benefits from so many on the public dole. We even call the folks taking welfare “beneficiaries.” So, whenever I see a story like this, I worry about just what the chocolate ration is going to be and just what Eastasia is up to these days.

I have no problem with temporary assistance for people truly in need but try checking out behind somebody on the public dole in the grocery and compare what they are buying with what you can afford. It is enough to make you hate all such programs.

Unfortunately, this is the tip of the iceberg. Food stamps is generally the jumping-off point for all kinds of other federal assistance, such as ‘Obamaphones.’ Once someone gets signed up for food stamps, they’re eligible for all sorts of further economic assistance.

It would be interesting to get an estimate of just how much total government assistance the average food stamp recipient gets.
