Touré: Playing in the snow is a lot like dancing on the deck of the Titanic, or something

posted at 7:21 pm on January 22, 2014 by Erika Johnsen

Because weather isn’t climate — until, of course, progressives decide that it is. For the record, I’m equally annoyed by intonations of “extraordinary weather events” as ostensible proof either for or against climate change, but I’m pretty sure that yesterday’s winter storm Janus was less an “extraordinary weather event” and more your annual-ish northeastern blizzard. A.k.a., winter. The segment was about fun pastimes playing in the snow, for goodness sake — and speaking of, you know what I really miss? The good ol’ days when every single weather event wasn’t relentlessly politicized on behalf of an alarmist agenda. Those were the times. Via NRO:

No specific weather event counts against CAGW, because weather isn’t climate; however, any weather event can count in favor of CAGW, because the left must enforce the narrative.

You mean when a snow storm in January wasn’t named?

And they still are not BTW. It’s a convention that The Weather Channel started and other networks have taken on like it is an official thing or something.

In case you missed it…

DirecTV dropped the Weather Channel because the cable network refused to accept a 75 percent rate cut, according to Dave Kenny, CEO of Weather Company, the media company’s parent.

The pay-TV provider, which was paying the Weather Channel a monthly carriage fee of 13 cents per subscriber, told Kenny it needed to slash that fee because it was paying local broadcast stations big re-trans dollars and needed to save money.

Weather Channel was asking for a penny increase in its monthly carriage fee, to 14 cents per subscriber.

When the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement, Weather Channel was dropped from DirecTV’s 20 million subscribers — including more than 500,000 in the New York metro area — Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.

I did miss it but since I can’t have a dish, it isn’t something I’d notice. Still, it is pretty stupid to be naming routine storms as if they were pets or something. It takes away from things like hurricanes who were only named when the National Weather Service thought that “Tropical Storm 52-3″ wasn’t sexy enough. But seriously, New York got a few inches of snow. In January. This is not groundbreaking.

Erika, if you’re going to make a point about an ordinary winter blizzard being an ordinary winter blizzard, kind of counterproduction to include the completely stupid “winter storm Janus” in your post. You’re only feeding the beast (TWC held hostage by NBC) that wants to sensationalize our weather for ratings.

Why is it warmer today in Alaska than Atlanta? @borenbears explains: http://apne.ws/1eTnj42
======================

GO FIGURE: Alaska is warmer than Lower 48
By SETH BORENSTEIN
— Jan. 22, 2014 3:53 PM EST
***************************

WASHINGTON (AP) — The weather seems more than a bit upside down.

The average temperature for the Lower 48 states midmorning Wednesday was a chilly 22 degrees. The average temperature for the entire state of Alaska at the same time was 24 degrees, according to calculations by Weather Bell Analytics meteorologist Ryan Maue.

Parts of Alaska were 30 degrees warmer than normal, southeastern Alaska hit 57 earlier in the week and the forecast for the rest of week was more unseasonable warmth, said National Weather Service climate science manager Rick Thoman in Fairbanks. He said it’s possible that the state record January high of 62 could be broken later this week.

Atlanta dropped to 16, Washington, D.C., to 9 and Central Park in New York fell to 7 on Wednesday.

The jet stream — the river of air that dictates much of America’s weather — is meandering again, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director at Weather Underground. So warm air is flowing from near Hawaii north to Alaska and from Canada south to the Lower 48.

According to DirectTV, their offer was a 25% reduction to 10 cents a month. They justify the reduction because TWC has shifted from a 24 hour weather channel to one that broadcasts reality shows 40% of the time.

DirectTV says their viewers want weather coverage and can get reality shows on dozens of other channels. The Weather Nation channel replaced TWC; it currently lacks their functionalities for local weather but will probably be able to catch up eventually.

I was going to call on TWC’s behalf until I saw how they were whining about it on air. They aren’t as indispensible as they think.

Sachiko on January 22, 2014 at 7:30 PM

You can’t blame the snow, it has no color. However, the nearly-infinite number of surface facets in crystalline frozen water refract available light in the full spectrum of wavelengths, and when all colors of light mix together, our eyes perceive that mixture as pure white.

Blame your eyes.

Toure has no class, no talent, and no understanding of reality. Why else do you think he’s on MSNBC?
