Davis campaign accuses reporter of taking orders from Abbott

posted at 8:41 am on January 21, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

The response from the Wendy Davis campaign to the exposure of her factually-challenged campaign biography and narrative as a single mom who put herself through law school turned out to be as inconsistent as the biography itself. At first, it appeared that the Texas Democrat would take the mea culpa route and apologize for her lack of clarity:

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, who is running for governor of Texas, has admitted that some of the public details about her personal history are incomplete or inaccurate, according to a report in the Dallas Morning News.

By the end of the day, though, Davis had changed her mind. Her gubernatorial campaign went on full attack, accusing Dallas Morning News reporter Wayne Slater of taking orders from the Greg Abbott campaign:

“We’re not surprised by Greg Abbott’s campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead,” Davis said in her statement. “But they won’t work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone and a mother.”

Asked by POLITICO to point to specific attacks from Abbott, the current Texas attorney general, a Davis spokeswoman responded, “We’ve had reporters independently verify these attacks are coming from Greg Abbott’s campaign.”

Have they? Have they indeed? The reporter who exposed the false narrative says that he’s not talked to anyone within the Abbott campaign — at all:

And as for Slater being a Republican shill, that hardly holds up to scrutiny, either (via Twitchy):

Slater used to appear with more regularity on MSNBC; the last time Newsbusters noted one of his segments was in mid-2011. Before that, though, Slater made a number of appearances on the network on Hardball and Keith Olbermann’s Countdown, as well as on Fox’s O’Reilly Factor, NPR, NBC’s Meet the Press, and so on. Slater also co-wrote two books about Karl Rove, neither of them terribly complimentary — Bush’s Brain and The Architect: Karl Rove and the Dream of Absolute Power. Those aren’t the kind of books one writes to curry favor with the Republican Party, especially not in Texas.

In other words, the Davis campaign obviously did not do their homework before grasping at that blame-a-Republican-shill strategy. The response, more than the story itself, demonstrates just how unready the Davis campaign and Davis herself are ready for a high-profile gubernatorial fight in Texas … or anywhere else, for that matter.

“We’re not surprised by Greg Abbott’s campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead,” Davis said in her statement.

Yeah, it must have been hard going through Harvard Law with your sugar daddy husband taking care of the kids back in Texas. Who lived in the hereditary double-wide with built in baby sitters.

Fact of the matter is that nothing in Wendy Davis’s “personal story” reflects the idea that she was a struggling single mother. It tells the story of an ambitious opportunist who essentially abandoned her family and only trots them out to tell a carefully edited version about her life.

Happy Nomad on January 21, 2014 at 8:46 AM

I personally love the fact that she dumped her husband the day after he finished paying her student loans off. Independent woman and all that. Well…independent of her children since she abandoned her girls and left them with her ex. Now we know why she’s so callous when it comes to murdering the unborn.

“We’re not surprised by Greg Abbott’s campaign attacks on the personal story of my life as a single mother who worked hard to get ahead,” Davis said in her statement.

It’s not a personal story when you publicize it, dearie. And you can’t fully sell being a hard working single mother when you are in Boston and you kids are in Texas being raised by your husband. And when it comes to that, your hard-workingness is pretty much reduced to being no more interesting than that of anyone college student living away from home.

Since when have Democrats allowed facts to get in their way?

chewmeister on January 21, 2014 at 9:22 AM

Yeah. Davis essentially abandoned her kids from two different marriages and then put out a mythical biography that made it sound as if she and her kids were all doing their homework together in a cold-water flat in Cambridge as she was going through Harvard Law. And, of course, the only reason she was doing it was to make life a better place for her daughters!

Davis’s biography is essentially a propaganda piece to appeal to rabid men-hating feminists. The same thing is going on here in VA where the Dem candidate has likened Tea Party Republicans to violent offenders intent on banning all abortions.

Happy Nomad on January 21, 2014 at 9:28 AM

I strongly encourage Wendy Davis. She will bring in a ton of out of state money, boosting the Texas economy even more. She will make ridiculous statements, thus embarrassing herself and the Democrat party. She will lose by a wide margin and strengthen the conservative cause in the process. And, it will be entertaining to watch the meltdown. What is not to enjoy?

Be careful on your wording — Abbott’s been paralyzed and in a wheelchair since his mid-20s. He’s not kicking anyone around, but he is going to roll over Wendy on November 4. (The key here is Sunday’s story basically blew up Davis’ compelling narrative on how she overcame adversity to get here. Abbott’s of overcoming disability to become state attorney general is still in place).

Stand by for a lawsuit!

NavyMustang on January 21, 2014 at 8:45 AM

This could be more of a factor than you think — While the national news media has orgasmed over Davis and thinks Gaia brought her to this world on June 24, 2013, the Dallas-Fort Worth news media knows about her series of lawsuits against the Fort Worth Star Telegram that now date back almost two decades. It means while Wayne Slater leans left, he didn’t have the same tingle in his legs that news people in New York or Washington had when talking about Wendy, and the result was Sunday’s Dallas Morning News story.

jon1979 on January 21, 2014 at 9:42 AM

Gator Country on January 21, 2014 at 9:42 AM

“But they won’t work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone and a mother.”

How long was she alone as a mother? Divorced at 21. Lived with her parents in their mobile home. then moved out. So she was on her own a year? Two at most? During a significant amount of this time she must have been courting Davis, her second husband, who not only paid for Harvard but the last two years of TCU before that.

Life is really tough when you have a Sugar Daddy. Much as I think the millions itself is an exaggeration, I’m thinking Texas women like that don’t reach into the millions. I’m thinking most have had a much hard time than Wendy and they ought to resent her trying to call herself one of them.

my story is the story of millions of Texas women who know the strength it takes when you’re young, alone and a mother.

It takes some b*lls to spin your life story this way when the truth is that she was “young, alone, and a mother” for all of about 5 minutes. At 21 she met a well-to-do lawyer friend of her father’s, got daddy to make an introduction, and spent the next several decades living off this guy’s labors. He paid for her last two years of college, paid for all of her law school, and took care of her two kids (only one of whom was his).

How many other “struggling young single mothers” in Texas have had the luxury of a lawyer husband with a six-figure income paying their way through life?

Forfeiting full custody of her daughters in the divorce is extremely unrelatable. I suspect it’s more damaging than all the other lies and objectionable behaviors.

Wendy Davis’ ex-husband: “They’ve asked me not to talk to reporters” …

The Wendy Davis campaign has been trying to keep Jeff Davis from speaking to the press for months.

The Democrat Party “Darwin” way, the survival of the most unfit.

She is the perfect Democrat, nothing is real.

That and the msm will know to just lie about anything to do with her past, makes it easy.

Wendy Davis’ Ex-Husband Asked Court To Order Her Not To Use Drugs Before Seeing Her Kids…

News has broken that Wendy Davis lied about her background. She is now playing victim blaming Greg Abbott.

It is her ex-husband who talked to a left-of-center Dallas reporter. It is also her ex-husband who asked a Texas District Court to issue a temporary restraining order against Wendy Davis in 2003.

In that order, the judge ordered that Wendy Davis “be immediately restrained from . . . using illegal drugs or consuming alcohol within 24 hours before or during the period of possession of or access to the child.”

Speaking of the child, at the time her twelve year old daughter requested her father serve as her managing conservator.

Wendy….Sweetie,

you’ve gone down on everything but the Titanic…

…believe it or not, you still need more than that on
your resume to run for Governor…at least in Texas..

I hope Dems pour money into this race only to see her get buried.

That’s my thought too. Granted, she has to be a hero to the pro-abortion hags. But the custody point has to turn indie moms off greatly. What kind of sk*nk mom does that?

BuckeyeSam on January 21, 2014 at 10:08 AM

Perhaps she should change her approach; she could start talking about her “choom gang” experiences, her use of cocaine, the most beautiful sound in the world (Muslim prayers from the minarets) and other assorted history. She can start making promises about women’s health care and if they want to keep their doctors they can, etc. Yes she has to change the spin and these are all tested and proven ways to convince the public that all is well.

Texas Women’s Role Model Wendy Davis:

“Let me show you how it’s done, ladies. Pick out a guy with a good income (single works best, but make do with what you can find). Ask your father for an introduction. Convince guy to pay for college and professional school, cashing out his retirement fund and borrowing money to do so. Leave him taking care of the kids while you go to school. Feel free to enjoy something on the side. As soon as school is paid off, dump the dude(some would advocate waiting a certain time period to maintain some decorum, I think 24 hours is sufficient). Leave the kids with him, even if they aren’t his. They’ll cramp your style.

We’ve come a long way, baby!”
