Inevitable: Obama to meet soon with Pope Francis

posted at 3:21 pm on January 14, 2014 by Allahpundit

Makes sense. One’s the leader of a messianic religious movement that’s recently been hobbled by scandal, the other’s Pope Francis.

I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t happened already.

Secretary of State John Kerry said the President was “looking forward” to visiting the popular new leader of the Roman Catholic Church at the Vatican.

Kerry did not say when the trip would take place…

Kerry, a Roman Catholic, met with Vatican leaders on Tuesday to discuss foreign policy and economic issues, including Francis’ outspoken stance on income inequality worldwide.

He did not meet with the Pope.

Normally the president meeting the Pope is a simple goodwill-building gesture towards America’s Catholics but O’s got more at stake this time. Five years ago, at the height of Hopenchange, The One’s own endorsement might have been enough to persuade swing voters that God hates income inequality and wants government to do something about it. Five years later, at the depths of Hopenchange, he needs to appeal to a higher power:

When a White House speechwriter turned in a draft of a major speech on economic policy this month, President Obama sent it back with an unusual instruction: Add a reference to the pope…

Quoting the pope isn’t likely to yield direct electoral dividends for Obama’s party — the once-vaunted “Catholic vote” largely disappeared long ago. But in a string of effusive praise, the president has made clear he sees the pope as a like-minded thinker and potentially useful ally in a crucial battle of ideas, particularly on the importance of shrinking the gulf between rich and poor, a subject Obama has pushed repeatedly but with limited success…

To others, Obama’s interest in the pope exemplifies the way some liberals, cheered by Francis’ new focus, have expressed their hope for a church that puts less emphasis on issues like abortion or gay rights and more on immigration, welfare or poverty programs.

Obama is the “preeminent example of a liberal falling in love with Francis,” said Candida Moss, a theology professor at the University of Notre Dame.

Topics like O-Care’s contraception mandate and infanticide will, I take it, be discreetly avoided. Serious question: Will aligning himself with the Pope do anything to move O’s income-inequality agenda forward? Francis is popular with Americans generally and fantastically popular with American Catholics specifically, but as of late November, there was no evidence that his popularity was bringing people back to the Church in the U.S. People like him, but maybe not enough to act on it. Meanwhile, who’s listening to Obama’s sermons on sharing the wealth and remaining unmoved by them unless/until they know the Pope would like to see a bit more wealth-sharing too? My hunch is that people’s views of redistribution are similar to their views of contraception: They may admire the Vatican’s position as nobly motivated but ultimately they have to protect themselves.

Maybe Obysmal and Kerry should take some advice from Israel’s Defense Minister while they are at it:

I don’t know why you think that. Certainly in public Obama will try to avoid these topics, and they’ll arrange the photo ops so that Francis does not have an on-the-spot chance to contradict what Obama says about their meeting.

Because, of course, Obama will tell self-serving lies about what the Pope said in private.

Fenris on January 14, 2014 at 3:57 PM

When Pope Francis was a Cardinal in Argentina he confronted President Cristina Kirchner very directly on issues such as abortion and gay marriage. In fact she made very bitter and ugly comments about him. Her attendance when he became Pope was curious given her undisguised dislike for him as Cardinal.

My point? Pope Francis, as Cardinal never shied away from confronting politicians on these issues. I just wonder if he will do the same, even in private, with President Obama.

I feel sorry for this Pope having to take away from serious business to put up with and attempt to placate this bewildered, gender-confused boy dressed in adult skin.

The Pope will also have, I suspect, made arrangements to have his fingers counted and all the shiny stuff accounted for.

harlekwin15 on January 14, 2014 at 4:04 PM

Not so sure about that. They were constantly at loggerheads. There is corruption, poverty and displacement of people in Argentina caused by government action, inaction and avarice. That said, it would not be unusual to see a Cardinal want to achieve better standards of living and justice for the poor of that country. Blessed are the poor, right?

Blaise on January 14, 2014 at 4:13 PM

thatsafactjack on January 14, 2014 at 3:25 PM

The neat thing about being pope is that all the world leaders come to meet you rather than the other way around. Apparently, there is even a buzzer under the pope’s desk which lets him end the meeting when he gets bored with his guest. If Obama is in Rome for a scheduled trip, then it is common courtesy to pay a visit to the Vatican. It would rightly be viewed as a snub if he didn’t. I hope that we aren’t paying for an extra trip so that Obama can get a photo op for the midterms.

And Obama doesn’t care about income inequality; I have yet to see him criticize the “cool” millionaires and billionaires in Hollywood and Silcon Valley. His earliest and most loyal supporters in Chicago were the Pritzkers. He does care about winning elections by giving his supporters more government bread and circuses. It would be interesting to see him have to deal with someone who actually does care about income inequality. Of course, Francis has a global, not U.S. centered, view of this. (I actually think that Francis has a dim view of America in general. He has never travelled to the U.S. and doesn’t speak English.)

Illinidiva on January 14, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Papa Francis, please slap this guy silly and throw him out the front door. Think of it as a money changers in the temple moment.

Blaise on January 14, 2014 at 4:13 P

the poor are better served by free markets and work than they are served by trying to dress Caesar up as the Church and trusting in the innate goodness of the state in playing Father Christmas.

You can’t have democracy in a nation where vote buying overtly is the baseline.

The Pope has already figuratively kissed Obama’s ring with his attacks on Capitalism, preferring the misery of big government Socialism/Marxism instead of the prosperity of Capitalism so kissing Obama’s ring in person is the next step.

The big Socialist government that the Pope so desires has already taken away and redefined marriage and now Obama is working hard to make Catholics fund abortions. One would think that the Pope would be smart enough to see that big Socialist government is not the friend of Catholics, but no.

By the way Francis, have your buddies in Socialist Venezuela managed to get toilet paper for the citizens yet? How’s things in Zimbabwe with Socialist Mugabe taking care of everyone?

The pope should beware the bear hug. Bad things happen afterward. If they get together to talk about how much money everyone has but not really important things like killing babies in the womb and mandated contraception, why bother with the visit.
