Video: Feds probing Christie over Hurricane Sandy relief?

posted at 8:01 am on January 13, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Oh, the irony. During the debate on Hurricane Sandy relief, some Republicans objected to the pork included in the funding — money for fisheries in Alaska, for instance, which was thousands of miles from the impact zone, and Washington DC museum roof repair that had nothing to do with the hurricane. Even while Michael Bloomberg told New Yorkers that their frustration over the funding debate should be aimed at the porkers in Congress, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie blasted his fellow Republicans over their reluctance to support the emergency relief bill, 25% of which went to pork.

A year later, federal investigators are looking into Christie’s handling of the cash:

Just days after dismissing two top advisers for their roles in the George Washington Bridge scandal, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is facing questions over the use of Superstorm Sandy relief funds.

CNN has learned that federal officials are investigating whether Christie improperly used those relief funds to produce tourism ads that starred him and his family. …

In the new probe, federal auditors will examine New Jersey’s use of $25 million in Sandy relief funds for a marketing campaign to promote tourism at the Jersey Shore after Sandy decimated the state’s coastline in late 2012, New Jersey Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone told CNN.

In an August letter, Pallone asked the Department of Housing and Urban Development inspector general to look into how Christie chose to spend the marketing money approved by the department. …

Pallone wrote that he was concerned about the bidding process for the firm awarded the marketing plan; the winning firm is charging the state about $2 million more than the next lowest bidder. The winning $4.7 million bid featured Christie and his family in the advertisements while the losing $2.5 million proposal did not feature the Christies.

Had the Sandy relief funding been distributed on time, this may not have had much resonance. However, despite Congress approving more than $50 billion in aid (and pork), many of Sandy’s victims  are still without the relief funds they need. That gives Pallone a big political opening, regardless of what he says about politics not playing a part in it, but it doesn’t necessarily make him wrong about pushing the probe either.

What about the Republicans? Christie burned a lot of bridges in that debate, and in his embrace (literally) of Obama in those final days of the 2012 election.  Ironically, it’s the Obama administration that is widening its probe into the use of those funds now. Don’t expect too many Republicans to rush to Christie’s side in this fight, except to point out that the $2.2 million difference between the two advertising campaign proposals amounts to 0.041% of the porkfest Barack Obama and Chris Christie demanded from Congress for Sandy relief.  There may be a lot of reasons why victims haven’t seen their Sandy aid yet, but this ad campaign isn’t one of them.

Sounds to me like this article is trying to excuse more RINO corruption by claiming it’s a drop in a bucket. It took lots of drops to fill that bucket of corruption. If Christie misused the funds he should be called on it and held accountable no meter his party affiliation. That doesn’t mean us RINO haters won’t be a little giddy at the fat RINO getting roasted by his “friends” in the media and across the isle…

Doughboy on January 13, 2014 at 8:20 AM

Christie is just fine as the (quasi)Republican governor of a blue state that’s known for its rampant corruption and thuggery. He fits them and their style fits him.

Beyond that, the difference between him and Obama is only that Christie’s a Jersey thug and Obama’s a Chicago thug. Same idea – get power any way you can and use to to aggrandize yourself and punish others.

There is no sense in any of these politicians of the public trust or trying to govern fairly, if from one’s partisan position.

Into the dust with the lot of them!

Whatever. This sudden rebirth of truth, fact-finding, probing questions, pork abuse, and misuse of funds by the media, unelected bureaucrats, and two-faced politicians is the height of hypocrisy. Obama and his administration have committed legitimate impeachable offenses, yet nothing is done. Nothing but kabuki congressional hearings. The mafia could be in the WH (they are a form of it) running the country and the media would glamorize & justify their lifestyle and decisions (yes, they do this already).

Ironically, it’s the Obama administration that is widening its probe into the use of those funds now.

And Christie is one of them, but he has an R behind his name. Don’t doubt for a second that he’d get a pass if he was a Democrat. The double standard is despicable. They should all be tried and convicted, not just the opposing party.

conservative pilgrim on January 13, 2014 at 8:31 AM

Christie’s problem is that he did not kill an American Ambassador. That would have protected him from any investigation.

rbj on January 13, 2014 at 8:33 AM

The Liberal Piranhas are beginning their pre-emptive swarm attack in an attempt to take down another strong GOP candidate before they become too much of a threat.

Ironic how Christie played up to Obama when he visited in order to get all the help he could for his state. By doing so, a temporary mutually beneficial relationship was formed. Obama / Obama’s image got a boost from Christy being shown in the news being buddy-buddy, and Christy got attention and aid for his state. Christy may have forgotten, however, that the snake he cuddled up with is is the same snake that betrayed Americans in Benghazi, who armed & helped Al Qaeda take over Libya, who helped The Muslim Brotherhood take over Egypt’s government, who used the IRS to spy on his political enemies, & who continues to use the NSA to violate the Constitution in order to spy on every American. He may have forgotten how these same Liberals used every trick at their disposal to personally attack and eliminate GOP candidates from the last election.

NOW it’s Christie’s turn. One ‘weakness’ has been exposed, and like a starving wolf, the Liberals are going after that weakness, attacking from all sides like a pack of wolves, and seek nothing short of Christie’s destruction as a viable GOP candidate in 2016. No, he hasn’y betrayed and abandoned Americans, leaving 4 dead like Hillary did. For her, ‘what does it matter’. For Christie? Rachael Maddow has coined the Christie Bridge Scandal ‘Bridge-Ghazi’. In such a rabid, despicable attempt to take down Christie Liberal PsOS like Maddow are trying to compare a TRAFFIC JAM to the BETRAYAL AND DEATH OF 4 AMERICANS IN BENGHAZI!

Liberals refuse to attack each other in front of the media and in public, always presenting a unified front to the public while disagreeing at times behind the scenes. The GOP? Like a bunch of amateurish morons, you have Peter King calling Ran Paul ignorant and insisting the NSA violating the Constitution by spying on Americans is completely acceptible…you have Lindsey Graham stepping out of his lane to verbally attack Christie (while knowing NOTHING about what went on)…you have ‘Washington Establishment’ Speaker Boehner attacking Conservatives and the TEA Party because he hates them trying to constantly hold him accountable for his actions and to Conservative values…

No one knows what the GOP stands for anymore. They show no difference between themselves and Liberals. They are in-fighting, no unity, & the Liberals are picking them off one at a time. You’re on your own, christie. Right or wrong, hardly any GOP are coming to your aide because of your actions (buddying up to Obama)to help your state during the hurricane…good luck.

There are only so many pages in the Democrat Playbook. When something works, you can count on seeing that play again. I’m calling “Bullshit” on that one. There was a seven-minute response time, and the woman made it to the hospital alive. If there had been a four-minute response time, it might have made a difference, but probably not. Too many “what ifs” to hold Christie responsible for this death.

So you get a lot of hand-waving “may have caused” arguments, which are basically meaningless. Who knows, the traffic jam may have saved lives by preventing accidents that might have occured if traffic had been moving freely. No way to tell…

Major democratic donors (including George Soros) flock to Christie:

Christie has chosen his team, and he won re-election because, by his own admission, he is a raging liberal.

If all you know are leftist talking points, you really shouldn’t spout them just because they are attacking someone you don’t like. The meme of the bridge traffic causing her death is a lie equivalent to saying Palin said she could see Russia from her house. The woman made it to the hospital and died from complications due to illness and old age. She didn’t die from 3 minutes of traffic.

I am only surprised that leftists didn’t save this for next year. They usually wait till the RINO locks up the nomination before they try and destroy him. But it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Christie is the Frog and the Democrats are the scorpion.

They seem to have removed my comment about “Pretty Boy” Andy Cuomo. When does the investigation of him start?

“In 1998, Clinton-appointed HUD Inspector General Susan Gaffney testified to a Senate committee that she was the victim of “‘escalating’ attacks on her office by Cuomo and ‘his key aides,’ including cooked-up charges of racism, insubordination, malfeasance, and general dirty-dealing.” In 1999, Gaffney’s office concluded that “most (15 out of 19) Community Builders’ goals were activities rather than actual accomplishments.” and that Cuomo’s initiatives “had a crippling effect on many of HUD’s ongoing operations.”

Christie was a prosecutor, at least. Andy Cuomo was a fraud, at least. Even the Kennedys hate him.
