Report: No federal criminal charges expected in IRS targeting of tea-party groups

posted at 7:21 pm on January 13, 2014 by Allahpundit

The DOJ lawyer who’s heading the investigation is an Obama donor and the FBI, after seven months of supposedly investigating this, only recently contacted tea-party groups targeted by the IRS. But other than that, everything here seems legit.

I was totally betting on Holder resuscitating a basically dormant scandal in an election year, when his boss already has his plate full with NSA angst and the endless ObamaCare car crash.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation doesn’t plan to file criminal charges over the Internal Revenue Service’s heightened scrutiny of conservative groups, according to law-enforcement officials, a move that likely will only intensify debate over the politically charged scandal.

The officials said investigators didn’t find the kind of political bias or “enemy hunting” that would amount to a violation of criminal law. Instead, what emerged during the probe was evidence of a mismanaged bureaucracy enforcing rules about tax-exemption applications it didn’t understand, according to the law-enforcement officials…

By its very nature, the investigation has been freighted with political suspicions. Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer who has represented about a dozen groups that faced such questions by the IRS, said the FBI has yet to contact any of her clients about the issue.

“As far as I can tell, nobody has actually done an investigation. This has been a big, bureaucratic, former-Soviet-Union-type investigation, which means that there was no investigation,” she said. “This is a deplorable abuse of the public trust, but I am not surprised.”

The Journal seems to think this will be a whip for the GOP in boosting turnout for the midterms. I … guess that’s true, but probably only as part of a laundry list: E.g., “we need to show the White House that America can do better than ObamaCare and chronic unemployment and Benghazi and punishing people because you disagree with their politics.” So awful was Obama’s 2013, in fact, that between the NSA fiasco, the gun-control push, dithering on Syria, spying on reporters, shutdown theater with the national parks, and of course the Chernobyl you and I know as Healthcare.gov, the IRS targeting at this point arguably doesn’t even place in his top five lowlights of the past 12 months. There’s too much failure to keep track of. He’s faster than the speed of scandal.

Go watch Alex Wagner, who hosts a show for Bridgegate TV, wondering if Benghazi and the IRS scandal are partisan chew toys that will never be dropped because there’s too much political benefit to the other side in keeping them going. Chris Hayes should have her on during tonight’s “special” to flesh out that idea.

There are only four options I can think of to try and reclaim America now (I’m open to others’ ideas), in order of most-to-least preferred (IMHO):

(1) A national strike by producers (à la John Galt or Gandhi, requiring an inspirational spiritual leader) that brings the federal government to its knees and yields radical concessions;

(2) S-e-c-e-s-s-i-o-n by one or more states, preferably TX as the primary or leader (to which all patriots and producers will flock);

(3) A military coup (with constitutional-loving leaders who will hand power over to civilian authorities once ALL federal laws and unconstitutional agencies are repealed and we start over with the existing constitution as intended; and/or

(4) A 2nd American R-e-v-o-l-u-t-i-o-n against the tyranny emanating from D.C.

jawkneemusic on January 13, 2014 at 7:31 PM

I agree, the IRS is a relic of the past and a recipe for tyranny. We need to switch to a national sales tax model and eliminate income taxes altogether. That’s what we have up here in Washington State, and I’ve read in Texas as well, and it works great. We pay our taxes essentially anonymously don’t have to fill out any intrusive paperwork that invades our privacy.

So even if we can’t prove he was running this criminal conspiracy from the start, he is without doubt running it now. This should be called what it is – an ongoing High Crime being committed by the President.

Don’t misinterpret a rant on the internet as “You’re just giving up”. I’m doing stuff off the internet and getting involved but I don’t see the GOP responding to my efforts because I am “the tea party”. It’s hard not to tilt windmills against a mythical “establishment” when it’s existence is blatantly obvious. With Boehner planning amnesty in spite of major GOP resistance because the chamber of commerce demands it. It’s hard to not believe there’s an “establishment” when Reid pulls the nuclear option and McCain goes along with it instead of allying with the other side to prevent it from happening like he did when the GOP was playing with the idea.
It’s the DNC + the media + socialist activist groups like Acorn working hand in hand to destroy us and impose their utopia and I look at our leadership and see only capitulation instead of fighting. Ignorance instead of outrage.
There is NO leadership in the GOP and what leadership is there is actively fighting those of us trying to make a difference to maintain their own corrupt power bases.

Sure… I’ll vote for Jeb if that’s what it comes down to as the lesser of two evils but I am TIRED of it.

Fair enough, I agree they haven’t been taking it to them as they should be. It would be nice to see the GOP metaphorically take them out into the alley with a broken bottle but..

V7_Sport on January 13, 2014 at 9:12 PM

And the GOP won’t do a thing about it.

Corrupt Crony-Capitalist Politicians in DC (CCCP) are circling the wagons together hoping to fend off and destroy the tea party because it threatens to put an end to the corruption that Boomtown DC thrives on, and which is destroying America.

Actually, he emailed me. On his own.

He does pay attention when jackasses go on fishing expeditions for peoples info.

I said nothing. He contacted me.

V7_Sport on January 13, 2014 at 8:37 PM

A word to the wise, mouth. One of the trolls got the Banhammer up side her head for that. And no one went crying to the hall monitor about it.

It’s amazing how the establishment concern trolls like to treat us worse than the democrats treat their black voters, yet expect us to demurely put up it.

CurtZHP on January 13, 2014 at 9:16 PM

Sooo… first you say “the establishment” is a mythical creature that doesn’t exist.

Now it somehow does exist but it doesn’t really matter because the middle class sucks anyway.

Douche confirmed.

tetriskid on January 13, 2014 at 9:12 PM

LOL, thanks for the non sequitur. Where did I confirm the existence of this establishment? Where did I say anything about the middle class? Sucking or not? Where are you reading any of this?

V7_Sport on January 13, 2014 at 9:17 PM

he GOP is opening attacking these same groups with the Chamber of Commerce now.

tetriskid on January 13, 2014 at 8:04 PM

Awwww.
*blushes*

annoyinglittletwerp on January 13, 2014 at 9:22 PM

That says that there are 2 sides within the GOP, and is including the tea party as one of them. Your issue is evidently with the chamber of commerce who is a lobbying organization that hasn’t been elected to anything. And yes, they are soft on Amnesty.

V7_Sport on January 13, 2014 at 9:07 PM

The chamber of commerce is actively funding campaigns AGAINST Tea Party Members along and with the blessing of the GOP in order to turn it more moderate and cede immigration which will effectively destroy the GOP.

So why is the GOP leadership supporting this civil war?
