Gallup: Number of self-identified liberals reached new high in 2013

posted at 5:23 pm on January 10, 2014 by Allahpundit

Makes sense after the banner year that Obama’s had. Wait, what?

Let’s keep this in perspective: The new high for self-identified liberals is 23 percent. The low for the other two groups is 34 percent for moderates, also in 2013, and 37 percent for conservatives in 2007-08. For various political and historical reasons, “liberal” still retains a stigma. Even so, the trend lines are interesting. Here’s how Democrats, specifically, have self-identified over the past 10 years:

dems

No mystery what happened there. Opposition to Iraq began on the left and as it grew more mainstream among Democrats the number of Dems who were willing to self-identify as leftists also grew. Taking back the House in ’06 and winning the White House in ’08 cemented the gains — although it’s fascinating to see no further immediate rise after the financial crisis. What’s murkier to me is the new boost “liberal” has gotten over the past two years. The easy explanation is that O’s reelection campaign, especially the class warfare and “war on women” elements, further nudged some Dems into identifying as lefties, but don’t forget that lefties themselves grumble about O’s alleged centrism. I’m not so sure the recent spike is an Obama thing as much as it is a reaction to broader political trends — ideological polarization, a stronger lefty grassroots movement online inspired by people like Elizabeth Warren and Bill de Blasio, and just sheer temporal distance from the 60s and 70s when “liberal” became a four-letter word in the first place. Michael Barone has a theory that one big reason for partisan bitterness these days is that the parties are more competitive with each other than they typically have been in other eras. Usually one dominates; as it is, in the past six years, we’ve had two huge victories by Obama sandwiching a massive conservative-driven Republican landslide in the House. If Barone’s right, it’s no surprise that members of each party are identifying more with their ideologues than with the squishes in the middle. Case in point, here’s the drift among Republicans:

gop

As is true among Democrats, moderates have lost exactly eight points to people who self-identify more ideologically. As is not true of Democrats, though, the number of people on the opposite pole has remained flat. Self-identified “liberal” Republicans have dropped just a point since 2000, but “conservative” Democrats have dropped six points, which helps explain why “liberal” Democrats are up 14 points overall. What you’ve got here, I think, are a whole bunch of moderate Democrats suddenly describing themselves as “liberal” and a smaller bunch of conservative Dems redefining themselves as moderates. The whole party’s shifting left.

Update: Needless to say, the consistency in Republicans’ willingness to identify as conservative versus the big shift among Democrats is striking. Even before Dubya, a heavy majority of GOPers identified ideologically. That’s a legacy of Reagan, of course, just as the high number of moderate Dems circa 2000 is a legacy of Clinton.

I doubt that. The party isn’t shifting left — they’re just more accurately self-identifying since the self-delusion of their “moderation” is wearing off, and the “conservative” Democrats are realizing that they don’t actually hold views that are particularly conservative (hence Bart Stupak).

?

blink on January 10, 2014 at 5:27 PM

It could, but the number of self-identified liberals overall is also at an all-time high because of the shift within the Democratic party.

Stoic Patriot on January 10, 2014 at 5:30 PM

The whole party’s shifting left.

…moderate republicans are shifting left too…so what?

What we’ve got today is the population from kindergarten — who were fed “Mommy will take care of you” line of pablum for six hours every day or they didn’t get their milk and cookies — now grown up.

They want, want, want Mommy to take care of them, they really, really want it. Thus, temper tantrums like Occupy, Annymouse, Hillary, Hollywood, MSNBC. Where’s Mommy, why isn’t she giving them their milk and cookies? Pajama Boy is like the ridiculously blatant poster boy for this population, now twenty-thirty-forty years older physically but still in kindergarten expecting Mommy to appear with the milk and cookies…

It’s a Gallup pole … who cares.

Cadian on January 10, 2014 at 5:39 PM

There has been no shift at all.

Since Reagan, Democrats have run from the “liberal” label. They didn’t become “moderate” in any meaningful way, they just felt more comfortable cloaking their liberal views in the sheep’s clothing, it was less threatening.

Obama’s success, despite the fact he ran as a non-partisan moderate (after having amassed the most liberal voting record of any Senator in his four years, counting only those votes he actually showed up to cast), emboldened liberals to unmask. They assumed the pendulum was swinging back their way.

Not so much as to tell the truth when running for office, of course, but in between elections they feel they don’t have to hide their feelings.

And because most of their voters are brain-dead anyway, the disconnect between their election year rhetoric and their off-year voting doesn’t affect them at the polls.

Adjoran on January 10, 2014 at 5:39 PM

Anymore, I can’t bring my self to identify as a Republican. Certainly, not now that they’re shilling for amnesty in the run up to the 2014 midterms.

I consider myself a conservative who’s relegated to voting for Republicans because they’re only somewhat less radical than Democrats.

BuckeyeSam on January 10, 2014 at 5:42 PM

After a billion-dollar Presidential campaign based on nothing but social and cultural issues, and a year of being pounded over the head with All Gay Marriage All The Time, this is not surprising. There isn’t any such thing as a moderate on social issues, you are either liberal or conservative.

When economic and foreign policy issues dominate, you see more people calling themselves moderates.

Part of the problem is that there are very few spokespeople for the conservative movement – Cruz, Lee, Palin.

Unfortunately the media often paints establishment Republicans (Boehner, Ryan, McCain) as conservatives.

bw222 on January 10, 2014 at 6:05 PM

C’mon, Allah, did you have to scare us with another close-up of The Diz? “Corporations aren’t people!” Did she ever say what the millions of people who work for corporations ARE? Talk about a bigot. But hate and intolerance for the opposition seems to be a major qualification for liberal “Democrats” (HA!) these days.

Dominigan – you are SOOO right on the money.

Two of the greatest social/political advancements in the history of Western Civilization are Rule of Law (rather than rule by arbitrary decree), and the closely related notion that the Rulers and the Ruled must live under the same law.

Both of these magnificent concepts are under constant attack (at least in practice) by the so-called “progressives”.

For various political and historical reasons, “liberal” still retains a stigma.

Two reasons: Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.

WhatSlushfund on January 10, 2014 at 7:46 PM

The Democrats’ numbers are shrinking, but it’s the more moderate and conservative leaning people that are leaving the Party. So percentage-wise, that leaves more liberals.

Flying under the radar screen these days: Conservative Talk Radio–you know, the base of the GOP–has declared WAR on the GOP. Snicker all you want, establishment Republicans. This WILL have an impact on 2014. All those Mitch-isms out of the mouth of Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell. And threats from US Camber of Commerce leader Tom Donohue are BACKFIRING. You have been warned.

Feedback from ultra-liberal progressive in my office: this person was very Very VERY pro-Obama prior to Obama’s first election. To the point of creating a hostile work environment by invading other people’s cubicles and offices and proseletyzing about him. This person was also pro-Obamacare, although as time went by, he became more and more quiet about the issue, and will even smile now when someone cracks an Obamacare joke in his presence.

So in a discussion this past week, after every one has returned from vacation and the holidays, he admitted absolute and total unfamiliarity with the Duck Dynasty / homosexual kerfuffle. In other words, he has made the decision to not read the paper, not to listen to the radio, and not to watch news — to keep himself in a deliberate cocoon of ignorance to the point where he had no idea what Duck Dynasty was all about.

I have to believe that he’s avoiding any and all information in order not to have to think about Obama and the various disasters that are and have been befalling the White House.

Therefore, I wonder how many other progressives are similarly making themselves stupid, have found it all too too much and have opted out, and so have no embarrassment about proclaiming that they are still good little liberal people.

NahnCee on January 11, 2014 at 12:50 PM

What is actually happening is a move from a Judeo-Christian world view. Most biblical Christians have been in the conservative Republican category since Reagan. Many Catholics have shifted slowly form conservative Democrat to conservative Republican. Many non biblical Christians have moved out of the conservative Republican side and to Democrat moderate or liberal.

Within the next ten years , we will see biblical Christians further split out of the Republican party altogether. As our public schools continue to teach our children moral equivalency and anti- Christianity, You will see a continual shift to anti-Christian liberalism ( progressivism). This is not a political war. This is a spiritual war as more and more Americans reject God. The Republican party is already attempting to break its ties to Christianity. Unfortunately for the establishment, biblical Christians still make up a large plurality of their supporters. Time will change that.
