Open thread: Presser called to explain in detail how governor knew nothing

posted at 10:41 am on January 9, 2014 by Ed Morrissey

Obviously, yesterday’s Sgt. Schultz-like apology of “I knew nothing” didn’t tamp down the outrage over internal communications from Governor Chris Christie’s administration that strongly suggest that a bridge closure was political retribution. Now Christie will get plenty of opportunity to expand on what he, er, didn’t know, and when he didn’t know it:

Gov. Chris Christie has scheduled a news conference after emails and text messages revealed his administration may have closed lanes to the George Washington Bridge to exact political retribution.

The governor will answer questions at the Statehouse in Trenton at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Emails and text messages released Wednesday suggest Christie’s deputy chief of staff and a top Christie appointee on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey engineered traffic jams in Fort Lee last September to punish the town’s mayor.

Two of three lanes connecting Fort Lee to the heavily traveled GWB were closed, causing crippling traffic jams in the town.

Last month, Christie stated unequivocally that his office had nothing to do with the closure, and that it wasn’t punitive.  The communications exposed over the last 24 hours makes it plain that his administration did initiate the closures, and then celebrated them, for political purposes. Yesterday’s apology (of sorts) didn’t include a list of people Christie had fired, even though his only two explanations for the December statement are either (a) he lied, or (b) his staff lied to him. If he wants to sell (b), then he’d better be prepared to announce a rolling head or two in today’s presser.

The local media aren’t likely to let this go, either. NJ.com has timelines, scorecards, and a separate section set up already for breathless updates on “Bridge-gate.” It may end up derailing Christie’s most important appointment, too:

Kevin O’Dowd, who served as Gov. Chris Christie’s chief of staff as so called ‘bridgegate’ unfolded last fall was nominated last month as the state’s new attorney general.  He is due to go before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

The problem for O’Dowd is that Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly, who was implicated today as part of the investigation into the flap, worked for him. To date none of the emails that have surfaced implicate O’Dowd, even as several other administration members have found themselves caught up in the controversy.

But Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Nicholas Scutari said late last night he doesn’t know what effect Kelly’s role in the growing scandal will have on O’Dowd, adding that he’ll wait to see what comes out of today’s Assembly Transportation Committee hearing before deciding what’s next.

“(O’Dowd’s hearing) is still scheduled but we need to see what if anything more comes out (today) because all nominees have to swear in and testify,” he said. “If it goes forward it certainly will be a lot longer and different than originally anticipated.”

No doubt. If Christie really did get blindsided by this, then the best option for him would be to clean house from top to bottom. Anything less, and people will start to wonder what his staff knows that’s keeping their jobs safe. We’ll see what happens at the presser. John Dickerson predicts heads will roll:

CBS News political director John Dickerson told the co-hosts of “CBS This Morning,” to expect some heads to roll within Christie’s administration. “I think you are likely to see probably firings. I think you’re likely going to see a buck stops here moment from him (Christie) — taking responsibility for this.”

A “buck stops here” moment? That should have come yesterday, really, but better late than never.

Update: I’m pretty sure this would be the wrong strategy to take, but it would be legendary:

As for Christie, I hope he enjoyed his hug from Obama. I wouldn’t lift a finger to save the guy.

No matter the outcome. No matter the impact it has on Christie’s political career. No matter what he really knew and when he knew it….. The Bridgeghazi scandal is going to be legendary. Christie is the guy who closed down Fort Lee out of spite!

Christie can either take the tone he did last week and mock the journalist who asked a Bridgeghazi question (you think I was out there putting down cones?). Or he can take full responsibility and list who has been fired and what other actions he is taking.
Since Christie is a rat not ready yet to leave the ship, I’m sure it will be more the latter than the former.

This is exactly what the Left will do to any of the potential Republican nominees.

GOPRanknFile on January 9, 2014 at 10:52 AM

Democrats are on up on their high horses of indignation questioning “straight shooter” Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s denial that he had no knowledge of the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, while choosing to forget that their leader, President Obama, claims to never know anything about any of the major scandals coming out of his administration.

CNN’s Don Lemon specifically addressed that with Democratic National Committee Chairwoman, U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz Wednesday evening, asking her “what’s the difference between Christie not knowing and the president not knowing?”

After Wasserman Schultz played the part of outraged lawmaker that it took Christie seven-hours to release a statement Wednesday denying knowledge that at least one of his top aides had a part in causing the retaliative traffic jams in September, Lemon asked about Obama’s previous claims:

“He didn’t know about the NSA spying on allies, he didn’t know about the Obamacare website, he didn’t know that you wouldn’t be able to keep your doctor, so what’s the difference between Christie not knowing and the president not knowing?”

Wasserman Schultz responded:

“The difference is the issues that President Obama said he didn’t know about were policy issues. This is a scandal. A scandal that leads right to his office, in which his staff and possibly him, exacted political retribution in retaliation for a Democratic mayor in Fort Lee refusing to endorse him in his reelection.”

Wow. The IRS, NSA, Benghazi, and Obamacare lies aren’t scandals? I know the Democrats have low(or no) standards, but that still mind-boggling to hear even from Debbie What-a-dumb Schmuck.

Maybe he can go with the ‘it’s just 2 rogue agents in a remote office’ defense and call it a fake scandal, then he can appoint a GOP donor to ‘get to the bottom of it.’

And the end result is that he doesn’t resign and nobody gets fired, with the media applauding.

Good Lt on January 9, 2014 at 10:53 AM

What’s not surprising is that this thing with Christie is getting more media attention than Fast and Furious got.

More attention than the IRS targeting conservatives got.

What is surprising is that republicans have failed to develop a method of firing back at the media when this sort of crap happens. If Christie lets the media shake him for this like a terrier shakes a rag, he deserves what he gets.

Happy Nomad on January 9, 2014 at 10:54 AM

More than anything, this puts into perspective how petty actions, jealousies and emotions play a big part in Christie’s thinking.

Does anyone now believe that his high profile hosting of Obama was anything more than political hi-jinx?

How about his convention speech- which was mostly all about him?

I am sure we will take a trip down memory lane across many of Christie’s actions and view them through this lens.

The result? Well, he certainly didn’t get an ambassador killed, but is this the temperament we want in a president?

Hardly.

Not a fan of Christie at all but this is reminiscent of one of the first storylines in House of Cards when aides listened to the police scanners hoping for a shooting and/r death so they could blast the teachers’ strike. I wonder how long it took to go through the ambulance and hospital records before they found a 91 year old woman who died on that day? Meh, Obama would have just given her a painkiller anyway.

What exactly was Obama doing on the night of the attack? He’s only the President and the media seems rather incurious about what the President was doing on the night that a U.S. consulate was attacked and 4 Americans (including the Ambassador) were killed.

Why was security so lax at the compound and what is Hillary Clinton’s role in that? Again, the media seems rather incurious.

So, yeah, near-zero coverage is the case. Especially compared to Bridge-gate.
