White House disputes Gates memoir claims

posted at 10:01 pm on January 7, 2014 by Mary Katharine Ham

Just the first volley and return in what is sure to be a pretty consuming tussle for the next week. Allah brought you Gates’ part— the very serious claim that President Obama sent American troops to war for political reasons despite having no faith in the plan or will to complete it. Now, the White House:

“It is well known that the president has been committed to achieving the mission of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al-Qaeda, while also ensuring that we have a clear plan for winding down the war, which will end this year,” National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement Tuesday.

Hayden said the president “deeply appreciates” Gates’ service in the Pentagon and “welcomes differences of view among his national security team, which broaden his options and enhance our policies.”

This doesn’t really address Gates’ accusation, though, does it?

Gates: “As I sat there, I thought: The president doesn’t trust his commander, can’t stand Karzai, doesn’t believe in his own strategy and doesn’t consider the war to be his… For him, it’s all about getting out.”

Obama: “It is well known that the president has been committed to achieving the mission of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al-Qaeda, while also ensuring that we have a clear plan for winding down the war, which will end this year.”

In short, it is all about getting out.

I’m interested to see how quickly the media, having lauded Gates as a consummate professional capable of bipartisan feats of strength for years, can decide he’s nothing but a dishonest, partisan hack. I think Politifact has a system for suddenly changing long-held positions if anyone needs to borrow it. K.T. McFarland touches on the prevailing (for now) opinion of Gates around town.

How’s the dismantling and disrupting of al Qaeda going anyway? Just the worst.

the very serious claim that President Obama sent American troops to war for political reasons despite having no faith in the plan or will to complete it.

The “mission” was totally stupid all along, but Bush believed in it so what he did was tantamount to involuntary manslaughter, but what Obama did was tantamount to fist degree premeditated murder.

So who doesn’t think this is true? Only the most drunk of Kool-Ade drinkers. I’m sure those Dems who are not steeped in denial know this is true, whether or not they ever admit it. After all, they have the same mindset.

Pretty remarkable revelations by Gates.

Either he has penned a factual description from an insider’s point of view of a very important part of the making of American history that bears directly on President Obama, as well as the likely Democratic nominees, VP Biden, and Sec of State Clinton

or…

He’s a racist.

Ex-CIA lawyer says Bush not told at first about waterboarding

John Rizzo disputes former President George W. Bush’s claim that the CIA sought his permission to use waterboarding and other techniques on Al Qaeda suspects.

By Ken Dilanian
January 6, 2014, 5:10 p.m.
**************************

WASHINGTON — The decision to waterboard Al Qaeda prisoners in 2002 was made by CIA managers and government lawyers, and was not initially approved by President George W. Bush, according to a new account by a former CIA lawyer that revises the history of America’s response to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

A memoir by John Rizzo, longtime acting general counsel for the CIA, says Bush was not initially informed about the use of waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques that critics later called torture, despite Bush’s claim to the contrary in his 2010 book.

Bush later signed on,

and Rizzo repeats previous CIA claims that key members of Congress,

including Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco),

were fully briefed

on what the CIA called “enhanced interrogation techniques”

and did not object,

something Pelosi has denied.

In his memoir, “Decision Points,” Bush wrote that then-CIA Director George Tenet gave him a list of interrogation techniques to be used on Abu Zubaydah in 2002 and that he vetoed two of them. Bush also recalled Tenet asking for permission to use harsh techniques on Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, after his capture in March 2003. ” ‘Damn right,’ I said,” Bush wrote.(More…..)

Biden Brings Long Foreign Policy Experience to Obama’s Presidential Bid
A veteran of the Senate, Biden will try to help Obama tie McCain to Bush’s troubled overseas legacy

By Thomas Omestad
August 25, 2008
***************

n the realm of foreign policy,

Joseph Biden brings to Barack Obama’s presidential bid

something it lacks at the top—long experience with a range of countries,

problems, and foreign leaders.

During his short-lived presidential nomination run—and before he was tapped this weekend to be Obama’s vice presidential running mate—the Delaware senator argued

that the failures in Bush administration foreign policy and troubling trends overseas mean

that foreign policy should be front-and-center in this year’s race for the White House.

Obama’s selection of Biden signals

that the Democrats will indeed try to turn disquiet over falling U.S. standing in the world,

Washington’s troubles in Iraq and Afghanistan,

and other anxiety-producing events

like Russia’s invasion of Georgia to their political advantage.

Sorry, but I called this years ago it was so patently obvious, even for an ordinary citizen such as me. Obama backed himself into a corner by declaring Afghanistan the “good war” and Iraq the “bad war” so he had no choice but to send American soldiers to their deaths for no purpose other than to give Obama political cover. Nothing substantial has been accomplished in Afghanistan against our enemies for years…they could have all come home years ago and we would have gotten the same results we’re going to end up with. Obama’s ego and political aspirations are the only reasons they are still there.

justltl on January 8, 2014 at 7:29 AM

I am going to repeat my previous comment;

The fact that politics is one forethought in war is not shocking or new. That is as old as our republic and is rooted in consideration of our citizens and their representatives opinion on the matter.

But what is unconscionable and unprecedented is Mr. Obama made individual party politics a primary consideration and then lied to the country about both his motives and intent.

That’s not only fallacious and dishonest, but it despicably put our military in mortal danger to support a political meme.

Take this context and retrofit the perspective into all our major military decisions since the beginning of Mr. Obama’s presidency. How did it affect our support for the mission? Troop level agreements? ROE’s? How many men were ultimately killed as a sacrifice to Mr. Obama’s alter of politics?

Absolutely disgusting and Hillary following the same strategy makes it that much worse. I would posit, we should also be looking at her decisions in places such as Benghazi through this lens, because it brings those decisions into a better focus.

Marcus Traianus on January 8, 2014 at 7:45 AM
