Glenn Beck: Let’s lay off Melissa Harris-Perry

posted at 6:41 pm on January 6, 2014 by Allahpundit

A magnanimous way to start the new year, although he seems to think what she’s guilty of is different from what MSNBC does as regular practice. Is it? There was no intent to harm, he says; she was riffing with some comedians, they did what comedians tend to do, and before you know it she’s on TV in tears apologizing to the Romney family. (“She apologizes — for what?”) And he’s right that some of the criticism was overheated, especially the accusations that she and her panel were making fun of the baby specifically. They weren’t, but the rules of outrage dictate that the more sympathetic the victim, the more justified the outrage is. If the baby’s the target then the outrage can go to 11.

What they were amused by wasn’t the baby himself but his inclusion in a big white family helmed by the last Republican nominee for president. That’s the “joke” — it’s Mitt Romney and he’s got a black grandson. The man who represented a racist party has a black infant in his family! You can imagine them marveling at the same photo if it had been, say, the Boehner family instead but it’s impossible to imagine them doing it if had been the Reids or the Pelosis. The need to denormalize a prominent Republican’s acceptance of a black child is why this ended up on air; that’s what makes the segment mean-spirited, not any of the lame jokes the panel made afterward. And that’s absolutely in keeping with MSNBC’s view of the GOP. Harris-Perry isn’t a dependably nasty character like Martin Bashir and her apology was affecting and seemed sincere, but this was all part of a common message. In fact, according to Eliana Johnson’s piece on MSNBC at NRO today, the network now has an exec reviewing scripts before they’re filmed to make sure nothing too offensive is said. The panel remarks on Harris-Perry’s show were unscripted but the decision to show the Romney photo obviously wasn’t. It made it to air anyway. Go figure.

Needless to say, Beck’s graciousness towards an opponent won’t be repaid the next time he says something controversial. Which he knows, of course. This is an argument about decency for its own sake, not some proposed truce in the outrage wars which everyone understands won’t last a day.

Frankly I think the left is best served by putting Balwin, MHP, Hayes, Sharpton, Maddow, and the other cadre of genuine reprobates up there on air.

Their ignorance and stupidity needs to be broadcasted. I’d like to see it done MS3TK style lampooning their idiocy in real time.

Dear MSNBC:

Please DON’T FIRE Melissa Harris-Perry!!

Give her a raise and move her show to prime time instead.

Move Touré Neblett there too.

The need to denormalize a prominent Republican’s acceptance of a black child is why this ended up on air; that’s what makes the segment mean-spirited

The only reason to bring this up would be to congratulate the Romneys and to point out how much harder it is for minority kids to get adopted.

But the Left can’t do that, that’s not how they think.

It was a grand total of about 3 minutes before they were back to calling republicans and tea partiers racist on Melissa Harris-Perry’s show. It’s what they do. It’s really the only thing they do. Until they grow the hell up and come up with some kind of reasoned counter-arguent rather then reflexively calling everyone they disagree with racist Glenn Beck can shut his pie hole.
As a matter of fact, ever since his idiotic “frog in the boiling water” analogy rationalizing the loss to Obama he lost all credibility with me.

John the Libertarian on January 6, 2014 at 6:59 PM

Shut up, Beck!

Blake on January 6, 2014 at 7:00 PM

On the basic premise, I agree with Beck. However, liberals always do this stuff and get away with it, it’s time to take them to task, but not by having someone fired. The Republican party has a massive media deficit and they will never win it without a sound strategy. Going after someone who says something stupid is not a strategy, it’s playing defense. Let me suggest that they go on the offense and refuse to send any representatives on MSNBC for starters. Just refuse to go on NBC or MSNBC and, when asked, tell the truth, they’re very unprofessional, largely biased, and totally in the tank for the progressive agenda. They’re certainly not a news organization willing to give people the truth and shows, like they did about the Romney family, are way beyond the realm of propriety. TO me, that’s a start. Let MSNBC explain why the Republican Party and Conservative representatives refuse to go on their network. When they lie about it, and you can bet they’ll try and cover up why that happened, so anytime they’re interviewed, they can find a way to put a dig in on MSNBC and just continue to make a mockery of MSNBC calling itself a news organization.

It’s about time they started hold the MSM responsible for their actions. Hold CNN responsible for Candy Crowley, hold MSNBC responsible for …………..well for everything they do, and hold CBS responsible for allowing the Democrats cover with many of their shows. Hold them responsible, just don’t go on their shows and, when you send people on their shows, only send the best, those who know the issues and will not get baited by the host into commenting on things other than what you’re there for.

That’s the point to be made, all those libs were boggle-eyed that a white-toast GOP’er actually sat with a black person, baby or not.

The lefties see such things as if they’re looking at a house cat drinking coffee and reading the paper; it’s just not possible. It’s the reaction you get from a huge swath of the nation who have no idea where their food or electricity comes from.

The country is being taken over by communists and people should spend a second on that idiot Perry? For whatever reason one may like to put it..she’s not worth the time, or it’s just becoming what you don’t like when the shoe is on the other foot. Doesn’t matter.
There is little focus to waste on that scrunt. Why? It’s just handing the opposition something to use against the conservatives. It’s what they always use to divide. Why fall for it yet again?

Well, if Ms. Perry was just Beck’s “opponent” and if she were the only problem at MSNBC, no one would really care. No, WE should not ‘lay off’ of Ms. Perry and the crew of MSNBC, because she, nor MSNBC, are sorry for what they did.

MSNBC’s racial attack on the Romney baby was carefully planned – just as all of their racial attacks are carefully planned – this is their typical MO.

The apology (second try after the lame Twitter fail, at that) changed nothing. The noxious racist is still on the air talking, why stop the lambasting?

Because if you do, you get Al Sharpton.

davidk on January 6, 2014 at 7:25 PM

He’s right in that she personally didn’t say anything bad. But, that’s not the point…her panel did. They took an innocuous family photo and used that adorable black grandchildren to mock said family. They poked fun at how she was different from all the rest. That is what was so objectionable.

That said, I am tired of the outrage game on both sides. An MSNBC host saying something dumb and offensive is practically an everyday occurrence…instead of rounding up the pitch forks each time, I think we ought to be glad that there is a network out there that is such a parody of leftist propaganda that they continue to employ people like this. I say, let ‘em…people like her and Bashir and so forth are what the Left is all about, and the more that is exposed the better.

Just a theory:

This is the Mormon Church not wanting to draw undo publicity to their past stance on Blacks in the church.

portlandon on January 6, 2014 at 7:02 PM

..My side is truth. My side is humanity.

My collie says:

What!? But I thought those two things were pretty much mutually exclusive.

Okay, collie. So the truth is objective, and humanity is rarely objective. Certainly, in this instance, there was a whole log of subjective criteria being invoked — like what is funny and what is simply mean spirited? Was there a line-crossed? I think so.Children SHOULD be off limits. That said, I don’t think that the LSM has had any real respect for that “rule” at any time during the past 50 years.

Perhaps Beck is simply borrowing a page from Nietzsche by warning about staring into the abyss (because it stares back). He is saying that if we adopt the tactics of the enemy, then we are as bad as he is.

My collie says:

So you agree with Beck then, CC?

No. Not really. I understand what he is trying to say, but he is simply naive. Harris-Perry may not be an evil person (YET), but let me assure you, her master is most decidedly Evil — and she must do his bidding. It’s only a matter of time before she is every bit as much a troll as Martin Bashir or the others. No mere human can give themselves over to THAT kind of Evil (aka the progressive agenda) and remain blameless. Eventually, she will succumb. We need to treat her as if she is every bit as dangerous as the others — because, in time, she WILL be. Maybe we don’t have to adopt the tactics of the enemy, but let’s not be stupid about WHO he or she is.

JFKY on January 6, 2014 at 8:07 PM

Speaking of:

The case of closeted Republican gays has long been a source of consternation among the LGBT community. General consensus still relies on the idea that “outing” is a morally problematic thing to do because, in the past, publicly declaring someone’s sexual orientation could put them at risk for violence and harassment.

In the situation of someone like Aaron Schock, this consideration is rendered inconsequential. It wouldn’t matter if outing Schock put him at risk of physical violence because he is a man who has made a career out of harming minority individuals.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-sosa/aaron-schock-outing_b_4550604.html

Read that again if you need to.

Progressives are completely comfortable with you being violently and physically harmed because you’re not on their side.

Think of how weird it must be to not hesitate to write that in an article. 27 likes and zero comments, btw, and no (D)s called him out.

How did the fight for civil right turn? What changed? Rumors and unfounded accusations against blacks were repeated and believed by the public at large. These accusations were spread by people at large and supported by the printed press and word of mouth. People..being people, believed these rumors because they had no reason not to. It’s when they saw for themselves that they were lies, that the support changed. When they saw the dogs..the water cannons confronting peaceful people that they started to question the common rhetoric and the stories the press was feeding them.
We are in much the same position now, only the conservatives are the new blacks and the stories being told about them are along the same lines of belittling and negativity.
The people are the power. Let them see the lies without the fog of spewing back. Let the left become their own worse enemy. Just my opinion.

I like Glenn… but he needs someone around him strong enough to edit him. Could have made that point in 30 seconds.
His network has real potential if they can keep Glenn from going insane. Good luck with that one.

Because only liberals care who people have sex with?

portlandon on January 6, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Is that why Larry Craig is still in the Senate?

libfreeordie on January 6, 2014 at 8:05 PM

THIS is why Glenn Beck is wrong here.
They just don’t quit.
Shiv them. Then, kick them while they are bleeding out for good measure, in the cage of ideas, of course.

CherryBombsBigBrownBeaver on January 6, 2014 at 8:16 PM

Kind of wondering why HA isn’t covering the outing of Aaron Schock….

libfreeordie on January 6, 2014 at 7:53 PM

Because it’s a “cousin of my friend’s maid saw….” story. Question: if TMZ reportedly has photos of him in DC gay bars and with everybody and the janitor having cell phone cameras, where is the proof? Mybe that’s what HA isn’t covering the “outing” of Aaron Schock.

Marcus on January 6, 2014 at 8:16 PM

The only way to stop these people is to remove their power. Stop paying attention to the also-ran cable news network, don’t go on and on about what idiots they are. Hardly anyone is watching MSNBC as it is, and this controversy serves nothing more than to bring in more eyeballs and justify its continued existence.

Let it burn.

And the Civil Right Movement CRUSHED IT’S OPPONENTS…just because violence was, by-and-large, absent from the CRM does NOT mean they were “nice.” They were implacable and unmovable….who is on the Ash Heap of History Wallace or King? King did not “compromise” with Wallace or Segregation, he aimed to defeat and destroy it…it’s supporters could acquiesce or convert or be shoved aside…but they did not compromise.

JFKY on January 6, 2014 at 8:17 PM

Why?

Why Not?

His perspectives on political and cultural realities are far less twisted then those found on the vast majority of the Talking Heads offered by the MSM.

Mimzey, we must drive the MHP’s, the Ed Schultz’s the Toure’s to edge of the Known Media Univesrse and leave them with an audience the size of the N@zi Storm Front Media group…..

HA didn’t cover the rumors about Harry Reid’s pedophilia either. We miss all the big news scoops, I guess.

And he’s right that some of the criticism was overheated, especially the accusations that she and her panel were making fun of the baby specifically. They weren’t, but the rules of outrage dictate that the more sympathetic the victim, the more justified the outrage is. If the baby’s the target then the outrage can go to 11.

So liberals make the rules on political correctness and race sensitivity but they can’t abide it?

one of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same. LOLOL

Yeah they weren’t making fun of the baby at all. Maybe they were laughing about Mitt’s third nipple or something.

I’m not advocating compromise or weakness. I’m advocating removing some of the power of the left by exposing them for what they stand for by the unclouded view of what they stand for, exhibited by their actions and words.

Mimzey on January 6, 2014 at 8:27 PM

BuckeyeSam on January 6, 2014 at 8:25 PM

It’s not enough for Beck to be in league with the likes of MHP and GLAAD; now he’s showing his solidarity with Jay Carney.

whatcat on January 6, 2014 at 8:27 PM

Say, who’s mimicking whom? Beck mimicking Carney, or Carney mimicking Beck?

Then we show MHP for what she is and make her resign…We must be IMPLACABLE and UNMOVABLE….What is so hard to grasp here…no one is going to so, “Oh you guyz are so nice” and think better of us….

Did King and the CRM say, “OK George Wallace, we’ll keep voting for you” or allow his ilk to continue to run Alabama? No they, like Jesus and the Money Lenders, drove Wallace and his ilk OUT.

I agree. But I think that using both tactics would be more effective than just one.

Mimzey on January 6, 2014 at 8:47 PM

This combined with his pro Russian gay rights stance and I feel like Beck is finding new ways to troll his audience in 2014. Instead of the usual huckster mess he sends out.

libfreeorgan on January 6, 2014 at 7:38 PM

…and his beard…is turning you on!

KOOLAID2 on January 6, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Glenn Beck has an excellent show on The Blaze and I don’t have a problem with what he said. All he’s doing is taking the high road instead of the low road, trying to bring a diversity of people together on the freedom and liberty end of the spectrum to combat the political establishment in DC that is the opposite. The fact is that a lot of R’s in DC are the enemies of freedom and liberty and the only way for us to preserve it is to ally ourselves with people in the middle and even on the left who are also on the civil liberty side of the equation. I’m not sure, but I’ve read that Edward Snowden is left of center, yet I know that he is a champion of freedom and liberty, unlike Boehner, McConnel and so many “Republicans” in Washington DC, and I would rather ally with Snowden and others like him than my enemies in Washington DC.
