Melissa Harris-Perry tweets apology to Romney family

posted at 10:01 am on December 31, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

It didn’t take long for Melissa Harris-Perry to reconsider her attempt to ridicule Mitt Romney by using his black grandchild as a target during her segment on MSNBC yesterday. While some of her contributors attempted to defend the segment as fair game because the real target is Mitt Romney — who has retired from politics since the 2012 election, it should be noted — their salesmanship was singularly lacking, especially with former CNN reporter Roland Martin:

From the other side of the political spectrum, Sarah Palin blasted Harris-Perry and MSNBC in a Facebook post this morning:

The LSM’s pursuit of “shock ratings” is unreal. Governor Mitt Romney ran for higher office with what I believe is a servant’s heart. He was saddled with some sup-par campaign tactics. That does not make him a bad person nor does it open his children or grandchildren to attacks over a year after the fact. This latest attack from the Left is despicable.

Leftist media hounds are not expressing an opinion with this attack; they are expressing a prejudice that would never be accepted if it came from anyone else but the lib media.

You really need a conscience, yellow journalists. May your 2014 New Year’s Resolution be to find one.

And once again, one has to demand answers from MSNBC’s editors and producers. Clearly, this wasn’t an off-the-cuff segment, but a planned discussion centering on a black infant sitting on Mitt Romney’s lap. This is the best MSNBC can do with its time? Between this segment and the Joy Reid Christmas tree embarrassment (that one targeting Palin, who’s also not in office or running for one), the channel’s executives should be too ashamed to show their faces at the New Year’s Eve parties tonight. What’s next, finding something to make fun of Bob Dole?

Anyway, Harris-Perry threw in the towel this morning:

Time’s Zeke Miller wondered what the hashtag was supposed to signify:

Perhaps Harris-Perry plans an entire series of apologies. There isn’t much lack of material here. She could start with the accusation that the term “ObamaCare” is more of a racial slur than pointing out a black baby in a family picture for ridicule, or something. An apology might be in order for her insistence that children belong to communities rather than parents or families. (But not Romney’s grandchild, apparently.)  How about Detroit being something that Republicans foisted on America? Or that it “drowned” because Detroit’s government was just too darned small?

Something tells me that #MHPapology has a long and glorious lifespan ahead of it on Twitter. Unless #MSNBCapology eclipses it. But it’s probably not going to convince people who watched the segment, for the reason noted by the Miami Herald’s Marc Caputo:

The structure of the apology is sincere, but it still has that whiff of “sorry I got caught.”

Come on, now, Cultist-it should be easy for you to find us some examples of today’s overwhelming Leftist Outrage over MSNBC’s racism…

OK…just did a Google News Search, and they have 200 results, but those results also include the original story and not just the apology.

And none of the major “news organizations” have formally put the story in print, as they say.

Melissa Harris-Perry is a stupid leftist whore who has generated more attention with this slur than she has in her entire “career” at MSNBC.

It is insincere as it always is when put in terms of “anyone who was offended” and offered on Twitter instead of the program during which it was uttered.

But anyone who listens to this fool for as much as five minutes already knows she is a lying leftist tool who would rather suck out Obama’s anus on television than report the truth about him. So all this attention is just exciting her. She doesn’t give a rat’s patootie about Romney, his grandchild, Republicans, conservatives, or America.

Forget her. She’s not worth any of this.

If people don’t want to be offended by the likes of her, Bashir, and the rest, I humbly suggest they do what I did and delete MSNBC from their channel lists and NEVER click on a clip from them, no matter who offers it.

Life is better without them, I promise.

VegasRick on December 31, 2013 at 4:14 PM

I’m going to guess that MHP didn’t learn anything from her Mormon upbringing, if she had any. Sounds like her mother wasn’t exactly a great Mormon.

I live in a Mormon dominated town. Down the street is a family, 10 kids. At least three are adopted, all of which are different races. Black; looks like asian, etc. Several others have adopted kids too, many of them black.

Nobody pays any attention. Well, except to envy the one black kid, as he is a star on the local high school football team. All the parents are white of these adopted kids.

Now, this story–is it a tragedy or a feel good story? Liberals like libfreeordie and MHP think that it’s a tragedy. These poor black kids are not going to grow up experiences inner city black culture or something. To that, I say, GOOD!

I also have adopted two little girls, and the family situation they came from was tragic. Whatever my wife and my faults are (and we have many), we are providing a worlds better home than they had. And objectively speaking, the home my girls came from wasn’t “the worst.”

Most inner city black culture, celebrated by Democrats and popular media, is evil and destroys life and personal liberty. It is designed to emphasize momentary pleasure at the expense of a lifetime of paying for it. It destroys homes. Note, by the way, that it’s not because it is “black”–the spiritual roots of much of black culture is to be respected. Democrats have destroyed that, though. This culture is destructive regardless of the race or gender of its practitioners. Inner city culture, with its gangs, violence, drugs, dependance on government, abuse (Especially against women and children), broken families, theft, crime, etc is not to be celebrated at all. Yet Democrats not only celebrate it, they wish to expand it to the rest of us.

It’s funny how Democrats demand that we tolerate their cultural beliefs. They wish us to celebrate any culture except Christian culture. Objectively speaking, the Aztec culture was evil. Cortez did the world and millions of people a favor by stamping it out. The incident deaths by disease are regrettable, but that was coming regardless of how the civilizations made contact. The culture of the Nazis was evil. So was 1930′s Japanese culture. Democrats are trying to reenact 1930′s Germany in a literal sense, but it was evil then and evil now. Stalin’s Russia was evil.

So all of this focus on “race” by Democrats is wrong. And, verbaluce, your insistence on the Democrat’s being responsible for black progress is demonstrably false–exactly how has the Democratic party advanced the interests of black people? By enslaving them to the Federal government teat and destroying the black family?

Ever see Disney’s The Princess and the Frog? Set in Jim Crow times. Tiana was poor, etc. But she had a family, and a dad who loved her. Most blacks had a family back then. They were happy. Now? Yeah, lots of happiness in the ghetto in Camden, New Jersey, that I spent three months in. Human misery, human dreck, wasted human lives–that’s the legacy of Democrat racial “progress.” The only actual black people who succeed that are lauded are athletes and actors. Dr. Ben Carson? Please–he’s a “House traitor” or something. Clarence Thomas? Heh.

Comments from the Leftists at Slate, angrily condemning MHP for her “apology”:

Why are liberals constantly apologizing?

Do you ever see anyone from the right-wing noise machine that dominates our media discussions apologizing?

Maybe we should start taking the Republican attitude: never apologize, always attack.

I’m not sure if the higher sense of journalistic standards on the left is a blessing or a curse.

Yes, liberals get their news from sources (NY Times, NPR, PBS, The Atlantic, New Yorker, etc.) that are rooted in empirical reality and try to conform to traditional journalistic standards.

The right-wing media (Fox, NY Post, Daily Caller, etc.) seems mainly concerned with distributing Republican talking points as loudly and repetitively as possible.

Mormons should not be allowed to adopt black children.

A black (or half-black) Romney grandson says nothing about diversity in the GOP. Despite public efforts to bring more blacks and hispanics into the party, they remain a piddling minority. And what Perry and her guests said (which one is not like the others?) can hardly be called disparaging. Nothing they said doesn’t even begin to rival what Phil Robertson said about black folks.

When are the Romneys going to tell the black child that heaven is for whites only?

Now, if we could just have apologies from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Gretchen Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Brent Bozell, and the Fox & Friends trio (just to mention a few), we could really just get along.

Her comment was by far the least offensive.

Harris-Perry’s comment was mildly amusing.

Never ever apologize. It doesn’t help.

Hounded By Free-Speech Advocate Sarah Palin, MSNBC Host Is Sorry for Romney Jokes

By Alexander Abad-Santos

After being chastised by Sarah Palin, defender of Phil Roberton’s homophobic and racist remarks, MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry is now apologizing for joking that Mitt Romney’s grandchild might marry Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s daughter.

From the Low-IQ Democrats in the comments:

So, we all understand now: in America, the Constitution reserves the right of free speech only to conservative, right-wing, hate speech, and any other form of free speech that does not meet the exalted Sara Palin’s and the GOP/Tea Party’s level of free speech is not free speech and should be stopped immediately, until their critics are completely silenced.

Sara Palin a “Free Speech Advocate?” I can’t decide whether to laugh or puke, except to say (before one or the other happens) there’s still an hour or two left for this to qualify as “Most Preposterous Statement of 2013.”

Shocked shocked that Palin would speak (garbled and uninformed as it may be) from both sides of her mouth on free speech. As they say in politics, doesn’t matter what you say as long as you get your name in the news. Publicity hound Palin is dumb as a fox.

Now Sarah Palin can apologize to Alaska for resigning as governor and to the citizens of the USA for inflicting her ignorance on us every time she speaks.

Sarah Palin is not a racist. Would a racist have a one-night stand with a black basketball player (Glen Rice), compromising her standards as a “journalist”? I bet Melissa Perry never did that.

Daily Kos finally got around to this story-in its usual fashion. verbaloon???

About that Black Romney Baby Nontroversy, Plus Don Lemon is Still Bitter

Wow, while I was out not watching Duck Dynasty an entire new TV Nontroversy has arisen over a segment of Melissa Harris-Perry’s weekend show where she showed a picture of the Romney Family which now includes adopted Grand-Baby Keiran who is an African-American.

The segment was intended to be light-hearted, but brother oh brother has it got the blood the Right-Wing Boiling, because y’know, how dare anyone joke that the picture shows about as much diversity As the Republican Party or say “one of these things is not like the other”.

Cue the Whambulance and the GOP Outrage Police because clearly someone needs to think of the Kids!

-snip-

It is something to see how amazingly pro-interacial adoption the GOP has become. Truly, it is something how progressive they are when they’re not saying the President is a secret illegal alien who was really born in Kenya and somehow smuggled 15,000 miles into Waikiki as an infant in a carry-on bag undetected by an 18 year-old from Kansas, all so he could grow up and install Death Panels to get back at all the White People who never enslaved him or anyone in his family.

-snip-

For some reason, Harris-Perry, who is clearly smart and highly intelligent as a professor, has become a lightening-rod for the Right. She’s become as much a knee-jerk example of rabid leftism as Saul Alinski and George Soros. They see her as a threat as great as Obama himself, apparently because – She. Knows. Stuff.

If you are this determined to believe only Hot Air and Breitbart are calling this one out…then you’ve wasted a hard earned degree in English.

WestTexasBirdDog on January 1, 2014 at 4:32 PM

I’m with you on that WestTex.
Harris-Perry could have gone the hypocrit route and skipped an apology, or she could have used extra airtime to replay the offending clip renewing the insult with the apology tagged on as a figleaf.

Instead she put it in writing for all to see, in perpetuity.
That’s the way to do it I think. If you have remorse.

And it balances the scale of offense.

President is a secret illegal alien who was really born in Kenya

(according to Grandma in Kenya, his literary agent, and more than one biographies)

and somehow smuggled 15,000 miles into Waikiki

Meanwhile, Fox hosts regularly mock and ridicule people on food stamps, many of whom are children, as lazy leaches. But this is the outrage of all outrages.

Two things. 1) Calling lazy leaches what they are is not mocking, it’s observation. 2) Please provide links to specific instance you believe provide a morally equivalent story.

Creating a “news” segment specifically to deride a family for having adopted a child of a different national heritage, treating it as a joke and sharing laughs about it, as though mocking it was the right thing to do, is inhuman.

Attempting to shed away the outrageousness by fabricating some not-even equivalent outrage against another, is sophomoric and moronic, and completely contemptible. You have no shame.
